This guy makes it look a lot easier than it was for me. I guess it's easier if you do as maintenance in stead of waiting for your check valve to start leaking. It was not easy for me because my O-rings were practically disintegrated so it was a lot tougher to get the old rings out. I eventually got it done, thanks.
@NoooBama how did you get the bottom o-ring on? It seems like the o-ring is too big. I have this kit to install all the rings but the bottom isn't working. Any help is appreciated please thank you.
Not to knock your video but I have done lots of these and a 15 year old o-ring that has failed is hard as a rock and can't be removed that easily. I always resort to dental picks removing the old o-rings piece by little piece. You must be using new o-rings for demo purposes. Installers must make sure that all pieces of the old o-rings are removed, even the smallest fragment will prevent the new o-rings from inserting properly. The o-ring insertion tool works flawlessly, the extraction tool not so much. This job can be a pain but its still a hell of a sight easier then replacing the check valve assembly.
I just purchased and used this tool set, and yes the 19 year old lower O-ring was brittle it came out in half, but the tool kit did come with a thin little instrument to remove any broken off bits of O-ring that were still in the Grove that worked great, the O-rings that came in the rebuild kit fit perfect in my 2003 Duece, no more leak. Thank you
This tool was a huge help. I did feel that the 2nd hook for tool B wasn't as long as what is shown in the video, but it finally did the trick. Getting the smaller o-ring into the tool correctly to put the check valve components back in took a bit of doing, but once I figured that out, it went easily. Thanks for the video, couldn't have figured it out otherwise.
The kit worked great for the upper ring, spring and check valve. The bottom ring was not so easy, following the video I cut the o ring on my first try, luckily I bought two set so I had another bottom o ring. The second time I just used the plunger to set the o ring, but had to use a small wire to pull a small part of the o ring into the groove, it kept getting pushed above the seat area, wasn't hard to do and once down in the groove, worked great, no leakes.
Ok... bought it, got it, watched it (Your video), did it. Thanks. Was it easy... oh yes it was. Did have to make two attempts on lower o ring... but I am sure was me error. Thanks again.
I bought the check Valve rebuild kit and it work fine instead of removing the seat, drian gas tank and take out the electric fuel pump to disconnect the fuel line with the check valve. It alot easily do it from the bottom of the check Valve disconnect. It don't leak fuel anymore. Test drive my Harley-Davidson Ultra classic electric Glide and, it O.K.
I bought #41 Denco O'Ring from Lowe's and a Dental Hygiene kit from Walmart(Mirror and pick/tooth scraper.) Kind of a pain in the ass job but no more leaks. Motorcycle up and running.
HI, I want change the three o rings (2 in the female and the other 1 in the male connect). Did you changed with the tooth scraper the three orings without the special tool???
ValdemarAK47 i only needed to change one in the female end to fix my leak. You could buy a regular hook and pick set but the mirror in the dental kit comes in handy.
In a previous comment I made. I noticed some leakage once the final connection was made. In the video it does not say anything about putting o-ring lubricant on the o-rings before inserting them. I recommend doing this, which may be the cause of fuel still leaking by after the final connection.
Decided to buy a new check valve today from Harley, it was 52 dollars and with the new seal for top of tank it came to 83 dollars, decided to change the fuel filter while I had it out and it was 88 dollars, the guy at Harley said be very careful getting the system out, you bend something and it's going to cost 480 for a new arm plus all the other seals. I pulled it out and also found the mesh filter for the fuel pump was falling apart and can't be replaced you must buy a fuel pump 246 dollars. So with my new check valve, fuel pump, filter and tank seal with new screws I'm in it for about 500 bucks doing it myself, (not a mechanic, TH-cam everything) If bike is newer, I would absolutely buy this tool but at the recommended 25000 mile fuel filter change I would go the total replacement because had I just done the o ring I was headed for a fuel system plug and tow with my luck somewhere in the mountains where I love to ride. I will possibly add this tool to my arsenal at some point .
Shop around, your paying way to much for your parts. My 2001 fatboy fuel pump, filter, pressure regulator and pressure regulator holder all together was 120 oh yeah and that includes the new screws for the top fuel plate and seal.

I was thinking, that from the top down, the direction is different from the bottom up.. most mechanics would look up into the opening, from the bottom, just my ideas on the subject.
The tool kit for this job is $100 at J&P Cycle. The rebuild kit is $17. MSRP for the check valve from Harley is $25. Think I'll just buy a new check valve
But it worked as advertised. My Loring was really hard and it took a number of tries with the tool and I finally had to finish it off with a regular seal pic. Upper o-ring came right out.
Just spent an frustrating hour with this tool,no luck except for scraping the chrome off the inside of the check valve. Any one thinking of purchasing this too had better have money to burn.Yes,it looks easy in this video.
I agree. I watched the video and bought the tool. My O-rings are 17 years old and hard. The tools did not remove either O-Ring. Both wires bent, one broke completely. The spring and valve did come out. I went to the dollar store and bought a dental pick. I'll use it tomorrow to try to get the old ones out.
Replacing the entire check valve assembly is simpler than just swapping out the O-rings. While you'll need to drain the gas, it's still a straightforward option. The tool shown here costs about $100, while a new aftermarket check valve is only $33. In my opinion, installing a new check valve is both easier and more cost-effective.
The tool is ridiculously overpriced....but it certainly made the job very easy. Also - this video 20x more clear than the vague paper instructions supplied with the tool 👌
Huge tip Make sure all the O-ring comes out. My O-ring was absolutely brittle and came out in 10 to 15 chunks. I had one small chunk left on the bottom O-ring and I couldn’t get the new O-ring seated until that chunk fell out! Good luck that bottom O-ring is a BITCH Great basic video
Worked on the upper not the lower tool sucks. Fuel tool is selling a defective lower o ring with there rebuild kit, the lower o ring you need to buy is 14mm10mm2mm. Even the dealer didn't know that fuel tool has a defective o ring in there kit, the dealer will only change the check valve.
I think you don't but push the little button in on the check valve to see if gas flows out without stopping. I believe the pump has to pump fuel out. The check valve only releases the pressure when you push the button. You have to drain it to remove the whole thing from the tank and replace the hose. That's what I believe about the check valve.
WARNING: if attempting on a sportster drain your tank first as a sportster does not have a tube and you will have gas coming out even if the system isn’t pressurized. Also, order extra viton rings as they are extremely fragile and will bind then break very easily.
Bought the tool for $100. The ORings with any age shred when you use it. I replaced the Check Valve, Regulator, fuel filter for $70. Bike wouldn't start once all the ORings were replaced. Unfortuately, the shredded ORing has traveled down into the fuel Injectors and bike didn't start. It takes 15 minutes to replace the parts using Harley original parts. I'm 6 hours and the bike still doesn't start.
I bought the tool kit and the repair kit. This was much harder to do than the video showed and when trying to install the lower o ring it got damaged. As I pulled the o ring guide out the lower o ring came out with it and had a chunk dug out of it so now I have to pay another $8 for a .50c o ring because I have no idea what size o ring to buy without ordering one from the seller I bought the tools from. Rather costly learning lesson. Also wish there was a photo to show what it looks like when the upper assembly is installed correctly so I can see if I have it in the right way.
+Marc Johnson Hi Mark, this is Mike from FuelTool. I am available at anytime to help you through any problem you may have. My cell is 201-956-2350. The reason the lower o-ring pulled out was due to small fragments of the old o-ring that still remain in the o-ring groove. This prevented the new o-ring from seating properly in its groove. If you take a small pick, place it into the groove and spin it around you will see additional pieces fall out. When these stop the groove is ready for the new o-ring. If you would like I will be happy to forward additional o-rings at no charge. Let e know. Mike
Where does one get the tools and o'rings for a 2001 FLTRI. My local dealership said couldn't help and don't work on HD touring earlier than 2013, believe that. Either do local non dealership HD repair shops.
I had problems mostly I feel is my boss made me do it with fuel in the tank, a total mess. Thank gawd a kid showed up that worked at Harley. The old o rings came out in pieces but after a few tries he got it. He didn't use the guide installing the 1st o ring. If I did this more often & without fuel in the tank I could get it.
Who knows of a video about "Replacing Check Valve"? Considering all the negative comments with this product ^^^ i would rather save my time/money and replace whole part. Thx
I had a continuing lite stream, so I clamped a hose around the valve and left it drain into a gas can. The next day it stopped, but I'd guess I still had a gallon in the tank, so it may depend pressure in the tank.
The lower o ring fits on to the o ring guide but not into the check valve. I cannot muscle the A handle tool into the check valve assembly and get the o ring valve seated. What is the trick here to get this o ring seated? This is NOT as easy as it appears.
He did not insert the tool in all the way like the instructions say; which leads me to believe he just put the o-rings in there loosely as a demo of what to do. Also assuming the gas tank was empty because when I did mine, it dumped 5 gallons of gas all over my garage floor. At that point, I just removed the entire check valve assembly from the tank to make the rebuild easier. The tool was unsuccessful at removing the 1st o-ring completely and the WD-40 I sprayed in there at the beginning of my process just left the remaining bit to just rotate in it's seat with no way to remove it. The paper clip wouldn't do the trick. Wasted $ on the tool, wasted time, wasted gas, funkified my garage, ruined my shoes. This should have been a recall in my opinion. My FLHR has less than 10k miles on it. I'm seeing complete check-valves for sale online for around $34. Lesson learned.
Is that regular WD40 you used in the beginning , I heard 'sylicone spray' , is that just the regular stuff or something a bit different? I looked it up didn't find any good info.
Hi Kate, do you have the correct sizes or messures of the 3 o-rings ? I have to change both the upper and lower plus the little one at the end of the fuel line. Thanks in advance!
Dammint!! I wish I had seen this video before I started, I took the tiny o ring out of the FUEL LINE itself. Can I replace the oring without replacing the entire fuel line? It's a dealer item only, and a bitch to find by itself.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks man!!
wish i knew this tool existed had to take tank to h/d dealer for O-Ring replacement said he couldn't replace top O-ring so had to order new part/s and spend $60-00 for part and $60.00 to install.
doesn't work on old hard O rings. tears the paperclip hooks and the tools and O rings cost 4x the amount of just getting a new Drag Specialties check valve ($25)
I have a 2006 Street Bob and the fuel just continues to drain when I use the screwdriver to release the pressure. So, I'm guessing you do need to drain the tank first.
The hose that goes inside the tank goes to your internal fuel pump in the tank, so when you release the pressure your emptying the line coming from your fuel pump. So no you don't have to drain tank.
No you do not need to drain the tank. There will only be a very small amount of fuel that will drain out. This fuel comes from the fuel line that runs inside the tank connecting the check valve to the fuel pump. Since the fuel pump is inside the tank it prevents fuel from passing through it and draining the tank while the bike is off.
I always use a syphon pump I got from autozone that you pump until the fuel starts going through it and it continues on its own. Go in through the gas cap opening. Then tilt the tank up from the rear a bit to work easier at the o-rings.
An uneeded expensive gimmick that is NOT required to do the job, Order MC300 and use a motorcycyle lift so its easier to access. A seal pick and manual dexterity are all that is needed.
This tool must suck since nobody carrys it , just my opinion i had it happen just this week did not want to work on my head easy to pull tank place on padded work table upside down use a 41x10x2 metric oring was done in way less time than trying to do it on the bike.... Big tip make sure you have all of the old oring out even a tiny piece will stop the new one from sliding in again took 15 mins total pulling tank and doing it with tank upside down....
interesting video.. i think harley wants about $50 bucks for a new ck valve ass'y.. if you haven't ck'd the fuel hose inside the tank for a long time, i would recommend replacing the complete ck valve & it comes with the new fuel hose.. i have had these hose's develope pin hole leaks & then it sucks air & you are stranded..
You can buy a new genuine H-D check valve assembly for 50 bucks. No special tools required. But the rebuild kit that includes the two viton (important) o-rings, stainless spring and plated valve is worth the 13 bucks. Just use caution when using o-ring picks to not damage the glands. Most importantly, use viton o-rings (normally dark orange in color), not EPDM or Buna-N materials. If you do you will have a greater leak than you do now. The custom tool kit is a good deal if you work on bikes for a living, but, once or twice in a life time is not economically sound.
Kim Reeves Do you know if there are any videos on how to replace the whole Fuel Check Valve Assembly? Need to do so on a 2008 H-D Softail. Thanks much!
I recommend fuel tech. You do not need to purchase the extra tools they offer. you can use standard o ring picks. I experienced issues at first with the company,, but, the owner called me personally and got all the parts to me that I needed for the repair on my 03 glide. chk them out and they will take care of your chk valve parts no problem.
ok, in follow up, and from experience now, if anyone is reading this, it is possible to pull the rings out using a dental pic. not too ard BUT its much easier to pull the unit out of the gas tank, which means draining your tank first but at least you can turn the check valve over and see what the fuck you are doing rather than trying to work upside down with a flashlight and a mirror. After replacing the rings, they held for a day then started to leak again so I ended up buying a new check valve, not too expensive but wish I would have done this in the first place. Buy a check valve, drain your tank. You have to remove the gas lines from the pump... take your console off, open the gas tank inspection plate, remove the gas lines from the pump. Unscrew your old check valve, screw in your new check valve. hook your gas lines back up, close the inspection plate, put you councol back on, put gas back in, go for a ride.
I visited fuel tool web site and didn't find the tool but found kits for the harley , the only thing is ...They don't show what kit fits what. I don't think this fits a 2000 Road King Magneti marelli with two check values . Just more Harley junk!
spending over $100 to replace two 3 cent o-rings is CRAZY! I would understand if you were a shop and had to do these repairs all the time but not likely. A shop will just replace the part and charge parts and labor according to rate. draining and removing a tank is not all that hard to replace a NEW part for half the price. Or for under $10 you can buy a crapload of both o-rings and with a $10 pick set you can do the work but it will take you slightly longer then this tool set allows. but again you don't have to drain the tank and the total job would take less than 30 minutes for a complete novice.
Not really, my roadglide needed this and a mechanic will charge 3 hours labor plus parts, new screws and seal to pull line and fuel pump out of top of tank, then replace complete line with valve and while open might as well replace fuel filter, about 450-500 bucks at Harley. They will NOT replace just the o rings call and check! I did and it's way cheaper for this do it yourself try.
I work at Harley manufacturing plant in York PA. You can buy a check valve screws and seal and do this replacement yourself including parts for about $45 and under an hour.
I tried to remove the lower washer with no success, how do i know if the washer has already deteriorated or is still in place. Honestly my harley has been in storage for approximately 5 years.
Harley used to not offer the check valve seperate, it was sold attached to the fuel line inside the tank as an assembly. When this tool works, it saves allot of labor and parts cost
Just tried it out today with a valve out of the tank and it FAILED to get any o ring out and...What piece of junk! This video is rigged! No way it works that way....The o rings that need replacing are hard and the tool will not grab it to pull it out. I think it will work on o rings that are soft but then they don't have to be replaced.
I would pull the fuel pump out and disconnect the fuel line from the pump that goes to the valve and remove it and replace it with a new one. You may find you need more like a filter and a tank cleaning and new fuel hoses. All depends on what the tank looks like inside. My hoses were brittle and were replaced. Being a 01 you are going to need some new parts to do it right.
Bobby Jones you are right, my bad, I was looking down plus dyslexic a bit. I bought it, it worked. Taking out rotten O-ring was little harder than in video. Had to pick it out in many pieces.
My 09 FLHR lower oring was leaking, John Deer part #??????? O ring found it on an HD forum site.. I made the hook from Electric fence wire, to easy out O ring and used a 7mm socket to install O ring.. $1.88 plus tax for the O ring.. that was Dec will be a year ago.. Oh my HD shop did not sell O rings, want me to replace the check valve itself..
Just the lower O ring. I have 42K miles on her, also I just changed the fuel filter and O ring this pass Tuesday. Filter was dirty looking but had no debris/dirt/sand after tearing it a part..

Exact same thing is happening to me I spent $80 on a tool that rips these o rings in half...good times
If I did this more often & without fuel in the tank I could get it.
before installing the new ones. activates the fuel pump to clean particles
Who knows of a video about "Replacing Check Valve"? Considering all the negative comments with this product ^^^ i would rather save my time/money and replace whole part. Thx
Do you need to drain the tank or just the fuel line to the check valve ?
I had a continuing lite stream, so I clamped a hose around the valve and left it drain into a gas can. The next day it stopped, but I'd guess I still had a gallon in the tank, so it may depend pressure in the tank.
Perfect thank you 🙏
Great video!! Thank you very much!
The lower o ring fits on to the o ring guide but not into the check valve. I cannot muscle the A handle tool into the check valve assembly and get the o ring valve seated. What is the trick here to get this o ring seated? This is NOT as easy as it appears.
Hey I’m trying to give this exact toolkit on amazon and I’m having difficulty. Do you have the link to it?
You can find it on J&P cycles
For some reason I am struggling with the lower o-ring, I cannot get it seated
Is that regular WD40 you used in the beginning , I heard 'sylicone spray' ,
is that just the regular stuff or something a bit different? I looked it up
didn't find any good info.
Hi, what model is this? Have a 2008 Heritage Softail Classic here, just started leaking gas and looks like this is the problem...
Did I or did I not see fuel running down the fitting after the final connection was made?
Haaa No Shit..
Hi Kate, do you have the correct sizes or messures of the 3 o-rings ? I have to change both the upper and lower plus the little one at the end of the fuel line. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for this.
Where can I find the tool kit
Dammint!! I wish I had seen this video before I started, I took the tiny o ring out of the FUEL LINE itself. Can I replace the oring without replacing the entire fuel line? It's a dealer item only, and a bitch to find by itself.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks man!!
do these tools work on Iron 883?
wish i knew this tool existed had to take tank to h/d dealer for O-Ring replacement said he couldn't replace top O-ring so had to order new part/s and spend $60-00 for part and $60.00 to install.
doesn't work on old hard O rings. tears the paperclip hooks and the tools and O rings cost 4x the amount of just getting a new Drag Specialties check valve ($25)
I need the whole check valve replaced but was told I need a special tool for inside the tank? Mine just doesn't unscrew. 2001 heritage FLSTCI...
Ciao volevo chiederti, devo svuotare il serbatoio prima di fare il lavoro di sostituizione oring? Grazie Fulvio
Ti sembra strano ma non si capisce se il serbatoio è vuoto…. ?
Good video thanks.
Consegue enviar um kit desse ao Brasil?
you are rotating COUNTER clockwise what up w/that?
looks like it was still leaking at the end of your video
What would happen if you didn't put the valve back in place?
I have a 2006 Street Bob and the fuel just continues to drain when I use the screwdriver to release the pressure. So, I'm guessing you do need to drain the tank first.
The hose that goes inside the tank goes to your internal fuel pump in the tank, so when you release the pressure your emptying the line coming from your fuel pump. So no you don't have to drain tank.
@@5280streetdogs My 2008 Lowrider never stopped leaking -had to drain the entire tank.
does the tank need to be drained before the valve is taken apart?
No you do not need to drain the tank. There will only be a very small amount of fuel that will drain out. This fuel comes from the fuel line that runs inside the tank connecting the check valve to the fuel pump. Since the fuel pump is inside the tank it prevents fuel from passing through it and draining the tank while the bike is off.
Where can I get the handle tools?
How did you drain the fuel out of the tank?
I always use a syphon pump I got from autozone that you pump until the fuel starts going through it and it continues on its own. Go in through the gas cap opening. Then tilt the tank up from the rear a bit to work easier at the o-rings.
An uneeded expensive gimmick that is NOT required to do the job, Order MC300 and use a motorcycyle lift so its easier to access. A seal pick and manual dexterity are all that is needed.
is this just for bike that is carbureted or is this for Harleys that is fuel injected
Only fuel injected bikes have this setup
+1 $53.64 The hoses do fail (small leaks) and cause all kinds of issues.
When it comes time for that I'll change out check valve and all hoses.. I just changed out the fuel filter after watching a few videos..
Anyone know what size the o ring is in the male end? As well as 2 in female?
You can buy a new genuine H-D check valve assembly for 50 bucks. No special tools required. But the rebuild kit that includes the two viton (important) o-rings, stainless spring and plated valve is worth the 13 bucks. Just use caution when using o-ring picks to not damage the glands. Most importantly, use viton o-rings (normally dark orange in color), not EPDM or Buna-N materials. If you do you will have a greater leak than you do now. The custom tool kit is a good deal if you work on bikes for a living, but, once or twice in a life time is not economically sound.
But, beware the shipping cost....
Thanks!
I already tried it but it keeps crawling much more.
where do I get this tool? and is it the same for 2003 Heritage?
nice
how do you get the o-ring out of the gas line (male part).
ok, in follow up, and from experience now, if anyone is reading this, it is possible to pull the rings out using a dental pic. not too ard BUT its much easier to pull the unit out of the gas tank, which means draining your tank first but at least you can turn the check valve over and see what the fuck you are doing rather than trying to work upside down with a flashlight and a mirror. Unscrew your old check valve, screw in your new check valve. hook your gas lines back up, close the inspection plate, put you councol back on, put gas back in, go for a ride.
wish i read that yesterday 100% right
I wish I would have saw saw this a month and $250.00 Dollars ago at the HD stealer "visit"?
Thanks for this and from all I will tell?
I think you're turning counter clockwise not clock wise.
I visited fuel tool web site and didn't find the tool but found kits for the harley , the only thing is ...They don't show what kit fits what.
I don't think this fits a 2000 Road King Magneti marelli with two check values . Just more Harley junk!
Why not just replace the entire check valve assembly?
spending over $100 to replace two 3 cent o-rings is CRAZY!
Not from Harley in Denver Colorado you can't.
IvIountainman thanks for the heads up almost committed to buying the $70 plus tool
I tried to remove the lower washer with no success, how do i know if the washer has already deteriorated or is still in place. Honestly my harley has been in storage for approximately 5 years.
I bought the tool set and I can't get it to work. It says it is made in China.
Some body know the inches sizes of Orings?
From Spain best regards a!!!
millionmilesman 14mm x 10mm 2mm thickness
What is the o ring size?
just go to harley dealer and buy a new fitting. 56 dollars, instead of this tool kit for over 100.00
Harley used to not offer the check valve seperate, it was sold attached to the fuel line inside the tank as an assembly. When this tool works, it saves allot of labor and parts cost
This doesn't work on all harleys. Harley made different check valves.
This is ridiculous. A brand new valve and hose assembly is $30. Just buy the new part and it’s a 10 minute job.
Harley Davidson store made me by the hoses for $400😢
Just tried it out today with a valve out of the tank and it FAILED to get any o ring out and...What piece of junk! This video is rigged! No way it works that way....The o rings that need replacing are hard and the tool will not grab it to pull it out. I think it will work on o rings that are soft but then they don't have to be replaced.
+Anthonys Channel
Bought a new valve from the dealer. I just replied to the Fuel Tool guy tonight.
+Dave Nystrom Dave I have a roadking 01 that gotten slow to crank what did it cost if you don't mind
It sure looked like it has major PITA potential to me.
About a min in all audio stopped.
You must have 3 sets or more. it may not work well on the first try.
Why not remove the damn thing, replace it at your table & install???
3.18 you say clockwise and you are turning counter clockwise.. FYI
Watch again Carl
Bobby Jones you are right, my bad, I was looking down plus dyslexic a bit. I bought it, it worked. Taking out rotten O-ring was little harder than in video. Had to pick it out in many pieces.
If you looking from the bottom it would be clock wise I was thinking the same watching until a put it together!
Tool didn't work for me, o-rings were brittle. Video by 'Biker Babe Beth' helped me get job done.
Thanks for selling us on tooling and not for actually showing us what to do.
Jam Ward you replaced both or just one??
Just the lower O ring. I have 42K miles on her, also I just changed the fuel filter and O ring this pass Tuesday. Filter was dirty looking but had no debris/dirt/sand after tearing it a part..
