Theyre custom resurfaced proofs. Any custom or manufacturing jeweler can take a plain 64 proof and "retool" or retouch the surface to give it the "matte" or "SMS surface finish. Either by electroplating or jeweler's micro-sandblasting equipment.

Nicely covered and I actually do have a complete set and there is not one doubt, I have for along time known well of finishes. So in such a case as this it absolutely came in to knowing such. So if not disturbed and kept well the finish as most do will not allow much if any change, as to a Satin finish is not as protective as your shiner finishes, such as semi- gloss and gloss, the Satin does well to keep protection and is much nicer on the eyes all considered. So major big question I got a Lincoln 1974 covering the 64 with a newer s Mint from the 74 strike time I am fairly certain this would be the correct sms as for I can’t not find a single one like this and 64 was first year of so said sms, please message me if anyone can help me through this I will be glad to pass this coin down if no one can help
G'day all, my SMS sets are quite different to the envelope in crinkle plastic type... Similar hard plastic but not sealed and quite a bit smaller.. I purchased one here in Australia and the other in Spain... My two sets have the tear drop designation on cerif.

I think the quickest way is to look at your coun end on and if it's square looking at the rim it's the real deal. If it's shamphered at an angle from the coin into the rim in then it's a common one.

More of a satin image and not all so like a proof. Still worth to holding onto probably. Satin isn't as shiny as proof I don't believe but I wouldn't quote me all that much on.
I have a 1964 -p proof type quarter with 2 top two arrows raised clear above the leaf whereas "DC Coins" shows the same proof with the arrows rubbing into the leaf. I understand that PCGS shows that two arrows above and clear of the leaf = " SMS ".

I've heard and read that alot of 1964 proof sets have been swapped out and reclosed with other coins.... Anyone with some experience with any of this?.... also, I have a set with a nickel with 8 steps, no joke. used a digital camera and have looked at it several different pics. 8 steps not including the one touching the vertical columns.

Its all disinfo and hype. The 64 SMS coins are simply common proofs that have been custom resurfaced.

most likely they are from Philadelphia Mint
Most nickels from the 60's, especially 65, are very common. Only in good shape and especially if they have full steps are they worth trying to sell.

Funny, I have a Denver mint set and a Philadelphia mint set in mylar which has a plastic token that says which mint it is from.
