“She’s my baby, we just want her back”, a statement that seems so simple to most of us, but to the mother of nine year old Asha Degree, it was a simple plea made from a desperate heart. When you wake up and find that your small daughter has vanished into thin air, there isn’t much you can say, because there isn’t much that you know. In the United States, more than 99 percent of children reported usually make it home safe, so it wasn’t illogical to have hope that Asha would have been one of those children, but as the years passed, and no new evidence came to light, it became clear that Asha Degree was in that much smaller percentage of missing children, the ones that never do come home. Today on Crime Weekly, we are revisiting this case, and hoping that someone out there knows something that can bring peace to the family of Asha Degree, who to this day still searches for their daughter, and have not given up hope that she might still be alive.

Haven't watched all this..you may bring it up, but I'm gonna share. My daughter's class and Asha's , even though in different schools, we're reading as a class a story about a girl who snuck out to meet a friend. Some of the kids thought at the time she was acting out the book.
@@taylorellison2719 I think she means that there are some that are way more protective than others. Yes. Most parents are the tight kind of protective and some are EXTREME. And dont give a flying fuck.
I am not extreme but am more protective than average. I have daughters. I have only a hand full of men I trust. My husband. My dad. And grandpaws. That is it.
@@taylorellison2719 Are you going to shed light on your vast knowledge or just hop in here and be rude?
Hey! I would love to support you guys by downloading and playing the game but I have an Android. Do you happen to have a link for the play store or a code I can put in the game for them to know I came from you? Thank you ♥
So after listening to this..the plot of the book was about a little girl who snuck out at night to meet a secret friend. The kids said that Asha was highly imaginative and felt somehow she was acting the story out.
I work at a gas station and last year got an amber alert about a vehicle and description of the suspect who had abducted a little girl! An he pulled into my gas station to get gas. I immediately called police discreetly. An stalled his tank, so it kept messing up, and police caught him! So amber alerts work! I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and thank God saved that little girls life!
Thats awesome! Good quick thinking, to stall the gas pump!
Well done. Thank you
Oh wow! Thank you for potentially saving that little girls life! ❤️❤️❤️
That is so awesome! I was shocked people get annoyed by Amber Alerts.
Bless you, that little girl may never know that you were one of her angels that day.
I went to school with a beautiful girl named Carina Saunders, she was brutally tortured and murdered in Oklahoma City. They found her dismembered body in a duffle bag behind a grocery store in October 2011. To this day, it remains unsolved. If you guys could do a video about her since the 10 year anniversary of her murder is coming up, id be so grateful. She was such a kind girl and her story doesn't get nearly enough coverage. Keep up the good work and i cant wait for the next video!
Omg how sad :( they also made me think of Baby Brianna from NM, but her case is so horrific I don’t think anyone would cover it. Its something that once you read/hear, you never forget. Rest In Peace to these little angels.
@Hannah Dudley, There is more than one pandemic.
VIOLENCE TOWARDS WOMEN.
I'm so sorry for your loss, and hope for justice ⚖.
Blessed Be Xxx 🙏🏼 ❤️ 🍀 🗺️ 🏴
@Hannah Dudley omg that's horrible😥. I hope they see your comment 🙏 .
@@arleneenriquez1061 I don’t think I could listen to a case about baby Brianna. It is easily the worst crime I have ever heard of, and I listen to true crime about 2-3 hours a day while I remodel my home. Never in my life have I had my heart broken for someone I did not know. Hearing how the whole family treated that baby during and after her death is horrible. They erected cages around her grave so people couldn’t leave toys and flowers for her. There is no picture of her ever taken while she was alive. She never new a single ounce of love or compassion. Stephanie Lopez and the 2 men should all have been sentenced to death. Knowing Stephanie was released before serving even half of her sentence is disgusting.
@@arleneenriquez1061 I have never heard of Baby Brianna (I'm in UK).
Just had a quick Googlerise.
HORRIFIC 😔😶
This is my second time listening and something struck me that I didn't notice the first time.
When one of the truckers saw her on the side of the road, he broadcast on his radio that there was a person, possibly a young female walking on the side of the road.
He did this to alert other drivers so they didn't accidentally run her over. But, it could have alerted a potential predator that there was easy prey available.
Just a thought.
God bless her family! This is truly a nightmare!
That’s my theory. Picture could have been a a previous victim. Predator asked her if he had seen this girl…. Ask to help her look for the girl in the picture
Good point. And if there was another trucker on that road with predatory inclinations, well, truckers travel so much they are easily overlooked as suspects.
That's a great point. Her leaving and her abduction could be unrelated. I think my automatic assumption when I first heard of this case years ago was she was lured out by someone she knew. But we can't say that for definite.
As soon as they said that, it was the first thought that came to my mind .. the predator could have even used the barn as a place to temporarily hold her and he could have dropped the photo as it may have been a previous victim.. she decides to go on this adventure and foul play interrupted the innocent adventure or rebellion she felt that evening
@@dannyjames9239 my first thought when listening to this & the fact that she'd packed her bag, was "has she done this before?" Plus, the initial driver stated that she looked like she knew where she was going.
I'm watching this 3 years later and there is an update from 1 day ago that they have searched a property and seized some evidence including a car thought to be connected to her disappearance. I pray the family finally gets answers 24 years later.
Same herw
I've heard of people complaining about amber alerts. I work at a pediatric office and anytime I read an amber alert I read all the details. When I get postcards with missing persons or flyers at the Walmart I always stop and look over every face because I hoped that if my child ever went missing that someone would pay attention.
Honestly there should be no reason someone would complain about Amber Alerts. Yes, they can be jarring when you get them and yes they often come when you are sleeping but they are critical in searching for missing children and that trumps everything.
This is the best description I ever heard of Asha. Every video I came across, nothing was mentioned about her amazing attendance, her studious habit, her childhood fears, and her shyness. Thank you for taking the time to talk about her and not just her disappearance. ❤️
Such a beautiful little girl with so much potential...She might've grown up to be amazing author or who knows but she was headed in the right direction...this one really breaks my heart.💔 I hope her family finds answers.
Q
@@lauragad2517 Q told me that Matt Gaetz’s & Gym Jordan’s whereabouts need investigated. Why haven’t they denied abducting Asha yet?!
I was a dog trainer/behavior consultant for 12 years and there are SO many variables like Derrick said. The handler is truly 80-90% of it. There needs to be a deep bond, trust, and security in the relationship. That handler needs to know that dog like the back of their hand and the dog needs to know the handler the same way. You can’t fake a relationship or bond with a dog. Dogs know all. There is really know way of knowing so many aspects of the dog and handler relationship. There are an unbelievable amount of factors. Everything from the dog ate something he shouldn’t have and wasn’t feeling well or the handler didn’t give him or her an opportunity to take a poop that morning. The handler may have been stressed or not in a good headspace and the dog will certainly pick up on that. May sound silly but little things like this can have a big impact. That’s why the dog and handler relationship is EVERYTHING. Derrick explained all of this very well! He explains everything very well, seriously. He’s awesome.
I felt the same way when I listened to Stephanie’s story on the disappearance of baby Lisa Irwin. I followed that case closely on a chat website , yet came away with a completely different view after hearing all the details Stephanie included.
The fact Stephanie brought up about Asha wearing white, possibly at someone's request so that she was visible on the highway, felt important to me. I'll keep my mind open until the end, but the fact that she was a shy girl who ventured out on a specific highway at night with the white clothes, tells me that she was lured. If her parents were overbearing, I think it would make it easier for someone to appeal to her - especially if they knew her.
As for the photo, I think Derrick's theory makes a lot of sense. I remember my friends giving me a class photo and my Mom putting some aside for my friends. I wonder if it wasn't someone she met at a camp or something!
@@user-lk2qf4rt3m Yeah, I definitely can't imagine her going far in a storm like that, unless she had a REALLY good reason.
The more school pictures you accumulated the cooler you felt! But, for this photo to have never been identified is definitely strange. Stephanie started to say something about the blur around the neck but got sidetracked… I’m curious what she was going to say.
@@user-lk2qf4rt3m interesting theory. It makes a lot of sense.
@@user-lk2qf4rt3m also, I was once stalked by a guy down the street when I was 18/19. I was too young and dumb to know the dangers but he left me a photo of a woman he cut out of a cigar magazine inside my locked car and wrote “you look just like her” or something to that effect. I wonder if there could be something like that behind it
Or a game
So Amber alerts are so important that the United States Postal Service has the alerts with pictures on our scanners. So every postal worker will be on the look out.
ah that's neat!
Love that!
That's so smart! Especially since postal workers are already out in the communities, driving around all day.
That’s amazing
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing.
As a real runaway child, that somehow made it to my late 30s - I wish law enforcement etc would treat 'runaways' with the same respect as 'innocent' children. Runaways are hella vulnerable, and not running for no reason, usually. Back then, last thing I wanted was to be busted by the cops and taken back to the Home. But now, looking back, def surprised to be alive today.
I think services need to be involved so much sooner than they are so children like the child you were don't need to run away. Children don't tend to run away for no reason. If they have run then they need finding and caring for. hope life is settled for you now

I live a little over an hour from Shelby in Morganton and was around the same age when this happened. After some time after Asha went missing, my grandma called my mom in the middle of the night in full hysterics. She always had a “sixth sense” and was NEVER wrong. She would know specific details about events weeks before they happened. She told my mom that Asha was close, near water but she was gone. It wasn’t long after they found her back bag just a few miles away from her house. My family begged her to tell police but she thought they would think she was crazy.
Wow!!
Why am I not surprised that Derek coaches his daughter's basketball AND softball teams? Such a good dude. 👏👏👏
Since I first saw Derrick on 'Big Brother' and Tinley was a baby when he played, she had a little bit of an 'appearance' for him when they were gettin' close to the endgame.. her little voice over in the house of 'holla Daddy' is all I can think of when he talks about her. He really is such an amazing man.
Can confirm. A few years ago in Ontario they issued an amber alert for a little girl. People were livid and were calling 911 to complain about it because it "reuined their sleep". Her father ended up killing her on her birthday.. people are disgusting
(Bleep) their sleep! DX
I'm a year late to this video but just came to comment about that case too. I still think about Ria sometimes.
Oh geez....the alarm is scary and loud and I rush to stop it....but I read it thoroughly....at least to see if it's my area.....
Jesus! A child goes missing and all people can think about is their sleep! Smfh. That kid didn’t get to sleep, so neither do we until they get found. 🤬
Than they would be upset one wasn't sent if their child went missing. We have silver alerts in Florida. Not sure about the rest of the states. But we got that one too for the elderly.
We have a fence on the side of my yard where my toddlers play. I take them both out at the same time, my fiancé is always like, “why not one at a time so you’re not struggling?” I tell him, “they can’t be out of my line of sight”. He’s like, “who’s going to take a kid in 30 seconds?” If only he knew all the child abduction cases that live in my head rent free. 😐
it's scary that he's so naive. what happens when he's alone with the children. He obviously would take them out one at a time. Bottom line, never leave him alone with your children.
Unfortunately 30 seconds is all it takes
You know what, Pen Pals were pretty common in the early 2000s, and if there was no electronic record of her corresponding with someone, I have to think that’s the only other way she would be able to connect with someone. A lot of times, Pen Pals will send a picture too. I wonder if an adult in her life that she trusted was grooming her and giving her these letters from “a little girl her age”. That would explain why the school had no record. They could have been grooming her and eventually convinced her to meet up with the little girl. If the little girl was someone that the adult knew, that might explain why she was never identified. That adult could have made sure that the real family of the little girl never found out.
That is also what I thought when I saw the photo
So this is pretty random, and just something that came to me in regards to the photo of the little girl. It's so hard to believe that Asha would have any reason to run away when it didn't seem like she had any issues in her life, even if a pen pal was to suggest it. Especially with how fearful she was. So she must have had a reason.
She had Christian parents, probably fairly conservative - what if she started to have feelings for other girls but didn't feel like she could talk to anyone about it or share it with her family? That could explain why this possible "pen pal" would have been kept secret (maybe it was someone posing as another little girl who wasn't straight), why she would have the desire to run away in the first place, and why she might be holding the picture of the possible pen pal - I know in 4th grade, I had plenty of crushes, and some of my classmates even had "girlfriends" and "boyfriends."
I might be totally off the mark, but it's just an idea that seems to fill a couple of holes in this case.
hmmm, I never thought about that actually!
She went to school at the same school as me and she was in a grade above me. But we did do pen pals I remember
I think whoever lured her out told her to wear all white so they could see her more easily in the dark
I really relate to Asha as I was also a “studious, perfectionist child.” And in my own experience, I came from a home that was very emotionally difficult. My parents gave me everything I needed: food, clothes, a happy home. But my parents were very emotionally abusive, which I think really fueled my need to be a good child and “perfect.” There were many times when I thought about running away, but I was too scared to. I’m not saying that Asha’s parents were abusive or bad- I don’t know them and I’m sure they were trying their best. But kids who live underneath parents are the most likely to know their parents in a way that is different than anyone else. No one would have said my mom was a bad parent- but I knew her differently. I just bring this up because everyone keeps saying there was nothing that would make Asha want to leave her home. But I think that there could be more to the story, Asha could have been more susceptible to grooming or more susceptible to run away.
Once again, I really don’t want to assume that the parents weren’t good parents, perspective is everything. I’m sure they are wonderful people, my mother is an upstanding person. But that doesn’t change the fact that my house was emotionally hard for me as a child. What it comes down to is we can’t fully know what it was like for Asha, because we can’t talk to her.
Very very true and I don't know why more people don't see this side of it
I was talking to someone last night about this! My parents gave me everything I needed as a child financially, but mentally and emotionally they were unavailable.
Same here, my mom made me start seeing a therapist at 8 and it doesn't matter what it was anytime I wanted to talk to her about anything she would tell me that I need to write it down and talk to my therapist about it.
So true. I know that as an adult, I still struggle with boundary setting. The child striving for perfection will be definitely susceptible to grooming :(
I was adopted at 14 by a family tht had a nice house, gave me good food, clothes etc. But was also emotionally abusive but were named foster parents of the year. By the time I turned 18 I was so exhausted by them trying to mold me into this perfect child tht I broke. I knew I was going to either try to hurt myself or I was going to leave, I chose to leave. Many ppl looking in thought I was selfish and a silly girl for leaving but they didn't know my adopted parents like I did. I had to get out. They told me I would probably die. Now 9 yrs later that was one of the best decisions of my life, one of the first major decisions I made as an adult. I did what I needed to do and today I have a good job, a college degree, a loving financee, animals and friends as well as being in the best mental health I've ever been in.
Love Derek's insight. When watching Stephanie's videos I find myself not asking as many questions. When you two don't always agree, it adds another layer to the case!
The second I saw that photo from the barn my heart sank. All I could think about was that she was going out at night to go see this girl which, more than likely, would not turn out to be this little girl from the picture. It's terrifying to know she was never identified.
It has always been very disturbing to me too. Especially since it’s B&W…school pics were color even 20 years ago.
@@amandanegrete1306 the fact that it’s black and white makes me thank it was possibly edited. it looks like the background of a school picture so i would compare other yearbooks from around the area or reach out to the companies who may provide the same backgrounds for photos. it seems like it’s posed and mass produced, at least the base photo.
@@anon4765 I’ve also been considering if the picture found was color but we (the public) have only seen it published by the newspaper in B&W.
I’ve always had the same thoughts as you, it was a mass produced by school picture company or something like that.
It does look like it’s been edited.
I think about Asha’s disappearance all the time.
The circumstances are terrifying.
@@amandanegrete1306 that’s a definite possibility! it also makes you wonder why. i’m curious to see if anybody has restored this to full color. maybe that background would be more recognizable if it was in color. i don’t know, but what i do know is that you’re right. it’s terrifying. whatever she went through seems so eerie and unknown.
I have always felt this way too. Why hasn’t the girl in the picture been identified. Maybe it would give more information.
This happened in my hometown. Her mom still tells everyone about her and looks for her daily. The community has helped to put up billboards with her face on them. It’s like our town walks around all subconsciously looking for her face .
I'm from the same town & this is true. My whole life I really just wait and wonder. It's such a terrible mystery. I've actually never ran into her parents or met someone actively looking for her in the moment.
I've been a "not-knower" before. Years ago, my uncle disappeared after sending emails to his parents and siblings. I believe it was almost a whole week of people looking for him. Everyone in the family had a feeling of what happened. But there's that small part of you holding out hope he's found safe. My stomach was a wreck that week. Anxiously checking my phone hourly at work, waiting for that phone call, etc. Eventually they found his body and it broke me...but I'd rather weep for him knowing, than to always think "maybe he will turn up". I can't imagine having a child vanish and not know what happened...
Watching this again September 2024. Police are currently executing a search warrant in the area related to Asha's disappearance. Praying the truth will be revealed.
Same praying for answers finally for her family and friends and everyone who cares about this little one ❤
I'm watching too
did they find anything???? TIA
I hope they find something to help give her parents some answers. I cant imagine one of my babies being missing that long and not knowing what happened to her.
They collected several items, but I'm sure it will be a while before we know anything from law enforcement. You can look up the official documentation on the recent search if you are interested.
As a mom of 3 this scares the living crap out of me, doing everything right and still something like this is unbelievable. Hands down one of the biggest fear as a mother not knowing what happened to my baby.
Me too. It's one of my biggest fears as a mother. I was 11 & lived 20 minutes from where she disappeared and her mom worked in the town I lived in. I remember it all so well.
As a mom to 5 I feel this.
Try to not let it. It’s like reverse card winning the lottery of the odds. It’s more likely of going out and having an active shooter, to be honest. If you want to protect your kids carry concealed RESPONSIBLY. My husband was a Police Officer and I’m just saying that you can create huge anxieties. Keep good locks on windows, doors, watch your kids, don’t trust just anyone, don’t put them online, use cameras on doors, and make sure ur kids don’t run off in public.
Yes you are so right
@@karieray9681 I mean Asha's mom did most of this and sadly something still happened to her daughter. I agree that we shouldn't let it get to us so much that it does affect our way of living, but I guess the scary part is you can do everything right but then still have something happen to your child and that's the scary part.
No way this 9-year-old girl, fearful of thunderstorms would venture out into the night of her own volition. NO way.
Perhaps she did if she was sleepwalking. People can do remarkably complex tasks in that state. Some of their actions make sense, as those actions are part of one's daily routine, while other actions are nonsensical, because you're not aware and in control of what you're doing. After this, she may have been abducted.
This was in my town and still to this day has all of us torn. I'm excited to see y'all's take on this case and very grateful that you two discovered it
I was curious about this take as well. You and I are from the same town then. Asha is my cousin, and we are the same age.
Same town here too 🥺♥️ this has haunted me forever.
As a 30 year old adult I’ve found old photographs in books (Library or thrifted) that I’ve kept because I felt sad for them being lost and forgotten. I know that sounds super weird but it’s not hard to imagine finding a photograph of a little girl and keeping it just because.
I know this was a year ago, but that's not weird at all. That's sweet! Tiffany Jenkins does goodwill hauls and shows the photos she finds in case anyone wants them back. If you haven't, you should check her out! 🥰
I’ve done the same thing.
I'm an antique dealer/collector and have more pictures hanging up of people I don't know vs my family (but to be fair to my family, the old frames and photos go with the decor). ...but I also have stacks and stacks of old photos all over the house.
They were somebody with a story
My first thought, too. I've found a lot of things in library books. Our library also shares books with other libraries - you can put them on hold and they bring them to your library to pick up, so who knows who had it prior to her.
Um no nine year old is doing that lol
Something huge is happening with this case. FBI and SBI showed up yesterday in Shelby at a house nearby with a search warrant.
Did the house belong to the basketball coach?
I've decided to apply to our forensic investigations lab (I have a BSc in molecular biology), and you guys have really inspired me to make a change in the lives of others. Especially Stephanie, who I've been watching for years

I lived very close to where this happened and still live about 40 minutes from the town where this happened. The response to look for her was swift and massive. It has always haunted me that there are no answers. I hope they the family receives answers soon. 💜
Hearing about Asha I really felt like I could relate to her and her up bringing when I was that age. I also left my house numerous times when I was 7-9 years old sometimes very late or early in the morning. I would also take a little bag with a snack and a book, pencil, random things. Sometimes I would just walk around the block back home. Or I’d go further to a little creek with a bridge and sit under it for a while before heading home. My parents never knew. My parents were very strict they would freak out if I told them I did that! And many of times I would get strange looks from people walking or driving around. A few times they would call out to see if I needed help. I would ignore them or run into the bush because I was scared. This case sits differently for me. I was a very secretive child.
I honestly wonder how something terrible didn’t happen to me when I was doing these things so young.
Good point, had Asha done this before and noone realised?
Consider yourself lucky 🍀
But would you do this in the middle of the night in a cold rainstorm?
@@OhMaryJo it sounds crazy I know but honestly yes. it would make the adventure more enticing. i remember once in the rain i snuck out to explore and i started a little fire under some makeshift shelter. i was probably like 7 or 8! when you’re a kid you can be fearless and oblivious. being on the brick of hypothermia doesn’t seem to matter when you’re having fun. once a man in his truck pull up and offering me a ride home because he said he knows my parents and it was getting dark. and i got in!! luckily he was normal and actually did know my parents and dropped me off. my mum still hates hearing that story lol it’s so dangerous. i am lucky.

Asha’s story haunts me sometimes in the middle of the night. I pray her Mom, family, finds out what happened to her in my life time. I cannot imagine.
Love Crime Weekly, so much critical thinking being discussed, exactly what goes through my mind as I am listening to these cases. I love the way Stephanie Harlowe covers true crime on her channel as it's so detailed and objective, but I love how it's covered on crime weekly too because not only do we get a detailed story of the case, they discuss it together; their questions, theories, opinions. It is unscripted and I like that during a lot of these discussion points, and I love it. Keep it up you two!!
I have always wondered if this pic was of a “pen-pal” Asha had. I know when I was in elementary school, we exchanged letters and school pics with other classes in a nearby state/town. Just a thought, but maybe she was going to meet this “pen-pal” for whatever reason and unfortunately, met foul play on her way!
Really an interesting thought…🙄 and with her not having like quick access to internet, she might been groomed by a “age-like” groomer from a magazine….
yea that was my 1st thought, she was headed out to meet her “pen pal” who was really a predator. i hope that’s not the case but it makes a ton of sense to me
Yes!!! I also had a pen pal! In 3rd grade from the town next door to ours. I was 9!
Wow, definitely a really good thought process. I was 13 in the year 2000 & pen pals were such a thing at that time, I had about 5 or 6 at any given time. I was obsessed with cute stationary, it made me feel so special to receive mail in the mailbox where the ONLY mail coming in was addressed to my parents, movies at that time made pen pals so glamorous & almost trendy and cool. Hmm... very interesting. Thanks for sharing this!
I think the predator penpal idea is the strongest theory, but would it be possible for her to receive and send mail without her parents or any family members noticing?
I pass that missing sign a few times a week. Don’t know the family personally but pray they find some closure.
Shelby is such a tiny town! I grew up in NC and we drove through Shelby on our way to Charlotte or to my BF’s family holidays on Lake Norman. In 2000, Shelby had 4 stop lights, no sidewalk, a super Walmart and easy access to the major interstate. I can’t imagine a child walking on her own in the dark!
I would look at the members of the church. Most trusted, easiest to convince a child.
Yes I agree @Tammy Ongley. I think it's quite possible that it was someone Asha knew & maybe trusted especially if its someone from the church.
Wow excellent point Tammy, I agree!
I think it was an adult from her school. They had every day access to her.
I was thinking the same thing, she went to the church all the time and would have trusted the people there almost as much as her parents and would explain why she was walking in all white. I was thinking it may have something to do with valentines day and I would be willing to bet it was someone from her church so if the church was in the same direction as the sightings that would be even more convincing.
@@MrKingdavis13 so because she attended church regularly, and the kidnapper could have been a church goer that must mean she was wearing white so that heightens the chance the it was someone from the church? This is one of the most frustrating disappearances for me. I can’t imagine what her family has gone through.
I know. Can't imagine..
I am SHAKING listening to Asha's mom's quote about looking for her. That is every parent's worst nightmare.
Great research! Strangely, my son was eight years old and we were in a hotel room. I woke up to him trying to open the door. He was sleepwalking! When I woke him up, he said he was going swimming. It was 2AM! if that latch wasn’t on that hotel room door, hate to think what could’ve happened. He never slept walk before and never again after that. I hope they find Asha.
My friendship with my best friend from highschool ended bc he tweeted that he was annoyed at the messages we got about missing people, and that is to this day, one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen someone close to me say. Absolutely unacceptable.
I'm just gonna say it. Stephanie is looking 👌 🔥. Also. I love the dynamic of almost harmonic banter of questions and comments between you two. It's a great combination to keep the stories more and more interesting.
Thank you so much!!!

@@AN-bo5ej OH, come on, everyone has been guilty of this. Clearly he meant that he's not trying to scare us unnecessarily to the point of all-consuming fear, but that a healthy amount of fear makes us cautious and aware.
Anyone else just binge watch Stephanie and Derek? ❤️🤣 I love you guys! ❤️ Now don't get me wrong. I like the 30 minute true crime videos that is a basic recap of cases. HOWEVER. These deep dives. The Detail that goes into this. The information we get. The way you get the "thought invoking" and "brain picking" going. The way you honor the life of the real human that unfortunately became a victim. It is absolutely my favorite. I'm here for it! ❤️❤️❤️
It was actually not torrentially raining when Asha left the house. Someone looked this up on the Unresolved Mysteries subreddit and found weather records, which stated it was not pouring at the time she allegedly left the house. Also, Asha’s dad originally had a very scattered timeline and could not remember in which order he had done certain things, like checked on Asha, got the candy, etc.
I am not saying the parents are the blame. But, I’m not saying that they’re not, either. Typically, a child of that age is running *away* from something, not to. But, if she was running *to* something, it’s wholly inaccurate of her parents to say she was never unsupervised. She did after school sports, which typically require kids to be dropped off away from parents. She had a computer in her home. She was a latchkey kid, at only 9 years of age. That’s a TON of unsupervised time, lots of opportunity to cross paths with a predator.
I believe her parents have more insight than they lead on, even if they’re not directly involved. It is normal for someone to look back and say, “No, officer, absolutely nothing was out of the ordinary and she was NEVER unsupervised.”
She was allowed to walk back and forth without adult supervision regularly to her relatives who held the slumber party across the street. That’s where she went the night of the disappearance. Someone connected to her family is responsible. A child this young very rarely truly runs away.
"She had a computer in her home."
I thought I heard that she didn't. Maybe I've misremembered.
This scares the hell out of me! I was a single mom and my daughter is 35 now. I still worry about her! Very scary world we live in right now. Thanks guys…love your podcast and your channel! 💜

@@hollywont9447 Yes, moms!! I do the same type of stuff to my son & he's 28! Still my baby. ❤
JP, it's always been a dangerous world, I think people, especially people like us who are into and aware of true crime more than other people even realize. BUT I also do tend to believe that for whatever reason "we" as a society have become more dangerous, more predatory, it seems like it's much more common for these types of crimes to occur than ever before. I'm not a sociologist nor a researcher in this subject, but there must be an underlying societal problem with the high statistical probability of children being murdered/sexually abused. Maybe human trafficking? A way for these child predators to satisfy their sick desires secretly, in an organized crime manner? I know that I am grateful to have raised ny son to adulthood without ever having to experience anything of this type of crime. I wouldn't want to be the parent of a young child, especially a daughter, in today's world.
She got the tweety bird purse in a giveaway at school - I wonder if it could have been used (bought at a thrift store or yard sale), and that photograph was in there from the girl who owned it before. It might have been in a pocket and not been noticed, or in the lining.
very interesting theory! i remember i bought a book from a thrift shop and there was a random photo inside (of people) that someone had obviously used as a bookmark previously.
Good theory!
I feel like the school wouldn't give away something used though
I thought the same
@@spaghettigal my kids school accepts little toys and donations for their “treasure chest” I love cleaning out little toys from our playroom and sending them in, and the kids enjoy them.
I can’t describe how happy I am you guys are covering this case
Same
I know you said she didn’t sleep walk, but there’s also the first time you sleep walk, the fact her typical routine of bath time didn’t happen, this could have thrown off her sleep routine also the sleepover could have messed up her sleep pattern, these are all thing that cause me to sleep walk, when the father came in and check on them that could have been enough to cause the sleep walking to start, I sleep walk when my bf comes to bed late and I go back sleep and within 10/15 mins I start sleep walking.
The sound of her getting up and going to the bathroom, and her brother hearing her bed spring maybe that’s her sitting down to put her shoes on, I’ve started packing my makeup in my sleep.
If she slept walked and come around and was confused that messes with your head, I get so confused, Maybe she ended up being lost and confused. Which makes me so sad. I haven’t finished the videos but just wanted to share my view on the sleep walking.
Also those items had to get there somehow, the guy saying the dogs dark at everything and they didn’t bark, how does he 100% know and at some stage the dogs barked at whoever left those items there. Does he have a timeline for when they barked when the items where left. Its not enough evidence to go on in my opinion.
I will also say my dogs also ‘bark at everything’ that’s how I would describe them but one night I came in late and they weren’t barking, it actually scared me cause they always bark when I open the door, but for whatever reason they didn’t and it wasn’t until they saw me they started barking with excitement, that’s just one example of a time I noticed them not barking and sure there were other times that I can’t be sure of.
This is what I was thinking too, also maybe she HAD sleepwalked very mildly in the past and no one had noticed, like little things at first and then it escalated one night. She could have sleepwalked going to the bathroom or something normal and then done this
@@cozycasasmr4510 Exactly, and if you remember one of the parents mentioned that they checked if she was on the floor, because sometimes she got out of bed and ended up on the floor.
I haven't watched part 2 yet but leaving the house in her nightgown, no coat, on a stormy night, I say 99.9% she was sleep walking, that was one of my first thoughts. Also, wasn't it just before this that she was really upset that her basketball team lost the game? (And that she had something to do with that?) Such emotional stress could have triggered a dramatic sleep walking episode like this. The thing that doesn't add up though is her stopping at the barn and eating the candies. I would think she'd be awake to do this? Was she just lost and scared at this point? Seems odd.
I don’t think she would pack a bag of clothes and lock the door behind her if she was sleep walking
Came to say the same thing.
And sleep walking is VERY common with night terrors. There was a thunderstorm, she was terrified of them, she was woken in fear (brother heard her get up), went back to sleep for a few minutes (brother heard her bed squeak like she was laying back down) and then she got up and began to sleep walk (brother final time hearing her bed squeak). This is super in line with how sleepwalking works. It would be about the same gap that O’Bryant outlined in his timeline.
I started sleepwalking for the first time at 15 or so. I did it regularly for about 6-9 months. It started along with me having night terrors but eventually didn’t just happen with night terrors. The first night it ever happened my sister who shared a room with me said I got up, looked fully awake, didn’t answer her when she asked where I was going and then she heard me walk out of the house and close the door at about 2:00 am. I “came to” sitting by a stop sign at a 4-way intersection about two miles from my house at like 5:45 am. Literally just sitting there on the ground in the foggy rainy morning.
I did similar things for that 6-9 months and then it just stopped and as far as I know, I’ve never done it again.
Something tells me she was groomed. I don't know how with how limited access she had with phones and internet, but the fact that she packed a bag and was walking and "looked as if she knew where she was going..." I feel like someone was grooming her. I hope her family gets closure and rest soon ❤️
My gut immediately suspected the coach - she knew him well, just had something emotional happen around the team, the route was one she knew for school....I'm sure they've looked into that avenue, but just immediately where my red flag was
Same. I heard the “I sat behind her at the game” I got some weird stomach dropping feeling. I don’t know if it’s just me being quick to judge or misconstruing an innocent coach-player relationship, but I feel sour when I hear anything about the coach
Dude for real me too!!!
Ugh, same here. I don’t wanna point to any innocent people, but Jesus, this guy give me the creeps.
I got the same feeling and for some reason I think he might have convinced her something about that picture of that little girl that hasn't been identified. Like he told her that this little girl needed help or lied and told her he was her father and the girl in the picture was her "half sister" and they were all going to run away together or something. Little kids will believe the craziest stuff like when Jane broberg believed aliens abducted her but it was her captor keeping her in an RV
It was said it was a family friend or relative who did it and that she never ran away. I grew up and went to school at the same school as her. She was a year older than me. But shelby has really bad crime. Its not a good place to live at all. So they got that wrong
Regarding the photo: Have the investigators spoken to any of the kids from opposing basketball teams? Little kids, when they meet a new friend, may give little tokens to each other. Or, someone from another team may have dropped or forgotten the photo, and Asha was holding on to it for the next time they meet.
Great theory! Sounds like Asha would be thoughtful enough to hold on to it.I was wondering if LE sent that photo out to schools even outside the immediate area.
@@salleebagno4390yes, they was a games that would being her head for a long time!! Great theory
Okay, I can see what Derrick is saying here. My 4 year old, for example, packs a back pack often when we leave the house and throws in the most random objects from around the house. Who knows why kids pick these things, but I can absolutely see her carrying the picture.
I love how quickly everyone responded
This one hits hard. Asha reminds me sooo much of my sweet girl. When you were describing her it was like you were describing my bonus daughter to me in every aspect.

This case is just heartbreaking and like so many other people have been saying this case is so haunting and I think that it’s nearly frustrating. Hoping that her family gets answers one day.
Yes it hunting to me, along with so sad and heartbreaking
Yes! Praying for answers for her family.
Does anybody have any idea if the police took that photo to professional photographers in or near the town?
Like those companies that do school photo shoots, to see if maybe it was a sample of their work using a fictitious person.
Or, does anybody know if the police investigated what kind of paper the photo was printed on? This is during the era, I think, where people could print photographs at home with a decent enough printer and photo paper.
I'm wondering if the police were able to determine if the picture was printed professionally by a company, or printed at home by an amateur.
I would think that also by zooming in far enough on the paper, they'd be able to tell if the ink was put there by an amateur printing process, or part of a regular commercial photo development... I only have experience developing film and making prints with black and white photography from a high school class, so I doubt the color process is anything like that, but I would still like to know what the police were able to determine about the photograph.
Everything in me is screaming "basketball coach." I don't know the rest of Asha's story yet, but when I was 16 I was "groomed" by my history teacher. It never played out aqll the way because it was discovered. But the exchange between the coach and Asha after the game spoke volumes to me about the beginning of a grooming process. ?Just my 2 cents. My heart goes out to Asha and her family. I hope someone finds the truth. Thanks for what you do.
Yes! Plus she was picked in his class for a special prize (handbag). As a teacher myself, I instantly thought this about the coach. When I go to school games and am sitting next to a student and parent, I address the parent and don't play with the kids. It's a little thing but also a big sign that the relationship is too close.
Actually, the fact she also packed her basketball uniform supports that.
I thought the same thing! I’m a teacher too and it sounded like the coach had crossed a line. The fact that she packed her uniform stood out too
I agree. I just think there are like three things in that girl's life that could get her to go out like that 1-her parents 2-church 3-basketball.
Ditto
I really want to know WHY she left her home. She was afraid of storms, most 9yo aren't just walking out the house in the wee hours of the morning. Also WHY did she choose to lay on the floor beside her bed in order to sleep sometimes per her mom. Was there something going on in the home that we arent aware of? That would be the only reason I can see a child running away from home in the middle of the night. Especially a child whose parents say she is so very timid.
The parents are involved. That's what I think
@@mariemarie3999 I have thought that for years too. There is another father/son duo connected to the relatives that lived across the street at the time of her disappearance that could be involved as well. I forget their names but the theory is really compelling, and they were in the area the night she disappeared.
@rockstarofredondo or possibly that truck driver? Something just isn't right at all. I mean obviously but it isn't some random child predator I don't think.
@@rockstarofredondo Who are that father/son duo? Are they Roy Blanton senior and his son, Roy Blanton junior? I've heard that Roy Blanton senior was one of the truckers who saw a person (possibly Asha) walking along Highway 18 on the night of Asha's disappearance.

My dads family lives in nc and when my dad got married again, they bought a house to be closer to work for them both. I've listened to people on TH-cam for years go over this case with a vague idea of where she went missing from. My dad happened to buy a house down the street from the degree family. I went to visit for the first in 2019 and the billboard that the family poses infront of is at the head of the road. How the hell do two different adults see a child walking along the side of the road after 3 in the morning and not call the authorities!?!? Obviously, it was strange enough that one of them felt the need to circle around 3 times! It's instances like this that make me lose faith in humanity.
Cells phones weren't common back then....Also, I live 10 mins away from this area, that stretch of road is long and dark, no gas stations in sight for miles for a pay phone. The second person that saw her walking turned around to help, but she got spooked and ran into the woods. She wasn't seen again after that.

My dad actually saved someone because of an amber alert. My dad is an electrical engineer and he works for a company that did a lot of big projects for like Bank of America and other businesses. We live in Missouri and he would cover the whole Midwest so he would be driving to these different clients for a week or so a month. And one time he was on his way up North in Nebraska and he got the Amber alert on his phone and then just happened to run across that car later on in his drive. (My dad restores cars as a hobby too so he is really good at identifying what type and brand car is) so he called 911 and stayed far enough back that he could see the car but they didn't really notice him. He followed the car for 30 minutes and was giving the 911 dispatch operator updated locations on where they were (my dad said they were literally out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but cornfields around on a two-lane highway and they were pretty far from any police station which is really scary to me nothing good happens to kidnapped children out in the middle of nowhere) they finally turned off into a gas station and my dad parked behind the building and kept an eye on them and let the police know. And that's when the police finally caught up with that guy. The second that guy saw the police in the gas station he tried to book it for his car but the police had blocked him in. He was immediately arrested before he could get back in the car where the kid was laying down on the floor in the backseat under some blankets. Once my dad saw the police had it under control he just drove away called his client and let them know he was going to be really late and went on his way.

I have researched this case off and on over the years. I am so bothered by the theory that she ran away because she was upset over her basketball game. It just doesn't seem right.
One thing I find interesting that they didn't cover, which I'm sure is out of respect for the family and I'm not sure is even true is that I've read online that people at the game overheard her mother telling her off afterwards and that THAT was what she was upset about. That her mom was mad at her about losing the game. It's a terrible thing for people to say if it's not true, but it has been repeated all over the internet. I don't know what to think about this case, but I believe that if they (Stephanie and Derrick) left it out, it's because it's an unsubstantiated rumor/gossip. Do you know anything about this?
@@chaoswitch1974 not to mention the guilt that the mom must feel- if this is true. 😢
@@chaoswitch1974 only that this is rumored. Nor sure if it was substantiated.
Not at all
I'd run away too if I had parents that controlling. It's incredibly common too
Thank you for covering this case. This is a local story for me and I’ve heard about sweet Asha since she first went missing. So heartbreaking. My heart goes out to her family.
