A webinar/panel discussion with Dr. Luis Riquelme and Dr. Michael Crary to discuss current IDDSI hot topics and to clarify misunderstandings and use of IDDSI in clinical practice. Welcoming all dysphagia clinicians and everyone who collaborates with dysphagia clinicians.
Dr. Riquelme is Director of Speech-Language Pathology and Interim Director of Rehabilitation at Maimonides Health in Brooklyn, NY. He is also Adjunct Professor at Universidad Católica del Uruguay, Montevideo, UY and Clinical Instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University, NY, NY. He has authored articles in dysphagia/swallowing disorders, multiculturalism, quality improvement and the role of culture on dysphagia services. He has presented locally and internationally. Dr. Riquelme is currently Vice-Chair of IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative); Member of the ASHA Healthcare Economics Committee and Past Chair, American Board of Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders. His current research focuses on changes in swallowing physiology in persons with dementia and on pill swallowing in adults.
Dr. Crary recently retired from university life after a career of nearly 45 years. During that time he remained an active clinician and clinical researcher. Committed to continuing to support clinical research efforts Dr. Crary’s current clinical and research interests focus on swallowing disorders, specifically improving assessment and treatment strategies. Current research projects include studies of the characteristics of dysphagia and related morbidities in stroke patients, community dwelling older persons, outcomes of dysphagia treatment in patients with head/neck cancer or stroke, and outcomes associated with exercised-based therapy and adjunctive modalities in the treatment of dysphagia in adult patients. His most recent text is “Dysphagia Management in Adults and Children” with Michael Groher (3rd edition 2020). Dr. Crary is a Fellow of ASHA and has served on the board of SIG 13.
