- Nothing wasted at this sawmill as the wood chipper is eating sawmill slabs in an oddly satisfying way on today's episode of Sawing with Sandy. If there's something that is going to happen as soon as you starting milling your own wood, that is the creation of lots of waste. The waste wood is often called slabs or offcuts and typically consists of atleast 4 sides of each log which contains the bark. Finding a use for this slab wood is often challenging for many due to how fast it builds up. There are people who will bundle it up and sell it, while others will simply pile it up and burn it. In my sawmill operation, I try not to have anything go to waste and so I try to use it. In comes my 40hp Kioti tractor paired with my Woodland Mills WC68 wood chipper. This pair is used to turn my waste wood into wood chips which I often use on my trails to keep dust down. The size and consistency of the wood chips is quite nice for building up low spots on trails and allows me to easily improve the quality of the woodlot. If your in the market for wood chips, making your own sure is a nice alternative to having to go out and buy them. Glad you fine folks tuned in today. Let's get to chippin!

Thanks for the informative video. I am about to update my PTO chipper and this is the one I favour. The speed control on the infeed is vital for me due to the large number of very hard wood species I deal with here in Australia. Well done.👍😁
love the wood rack I built the same thing for cutting slab wood and put into ibc totes for the winter heat

We have a Kubota B2650 with the Woodland Mills WC68 and it's fantastic. It's built awesome. We have tons of Cedar trees that have outlived their lives along with Ash trees that have been killed by the Ash Bore. We are going to make a bunch of trails on our land and top them off with the chips.

If you had a dump trailer to chip in you could then haul wood chips to where you want them and dump/ spread the chips in the area you want. Wood chipper is great. Have a great day be safe

If you happened to keep any of the plastic tanks for your IBC cages, one or two could be used to catch the wood chips from the chipper. Would be much easier to move the IBC tote around with the pallet forks on your tractor.
That’s a good idea. Unfortunately when I purchased Ibc cages I didn’t get any of the plastic tanks. I also would like them to make lids to cover my firewood. Thanks again for watching and all the best

I bought their WC88, and I’m very pleased with it. I can run all day feeding hardwoods like hawethorn into it. I’m very impressed with the infeed. You can saw down an entire 4-6” diameter tree and heft the base into maw of the feed chute, snd the whole tree gets dragged through. That red safety/ direction Control is very handy

Ive been looking for a 3pt chipper for a while now, been burning way to much brush.
It never crossed my mind to grind the offcuts though. Awesome idea.
Looks like a well built chipper, performed pretty darn good.
Got lots of iron wood in 4 feet lengths standing up in the kiln to give a try on some fancy handles.

That looks like a great chipper, the more chips I produce, the more uses I find for them. Trail cover is a great use.
Why did you put the small pieces on ground in machine to prevent trip hazards, have small chipper and keep ground clean to prevent me tripping over. Really enjoy watching you doing the work you do thank you .

I've had my eye on the Woodland Mills chippers for a while now. When I went back to look at them on their website today, for whatever reason they're now quoting ship dates in excess of FOUR MONTHS out.
Yeah I’ve heard similar stories all across the board with equipment like that. I’m guessing the demand for all those type equipment have skyrocketed

High Sandy, I would love to have that chipper but my tractor is rated at 17.5 at the PTO. A chipper that would fit my tractor is to small for my needs so I have to rent a portable one. Anyway, are you able to adjust the size of the wood chips produced?

Why place the chipper so far from the material to be chipped?
I needed to wood chips to fall in a location that my bucket could easily pickup and if I back up further there’s a stump that the wood chips would get piled onto. I didn’t want to have to dig around it
If you still have the guts from some of the totes you used for firewood, they would work excellent for holding the chips until you're ready to use them.

I think your slab rack is better than a trailer just for the fact you can cut the slabs with a saw. And your not bent over cutting slabs and I'm thinking the slabs stay pretty still while cutting them. I'll be making a slab rack for my sawmill. Thanks for the great videos

I have noticed the unusual symmetry of the "forest" around you. Obviously you are located in a reforestation (replanted) area. It gives the impression of being in a cathedral, with columns in alignment. Very spiritual.
Do you know how long ago that area was originally logged out and replanted? The size of the average trees around you would lead me to believe your forest is about 50 years old, or so. Just curious. Thanks!

You’re absolutely right Bruce. I believe the trees were planted about 35 or so years ago as from what I have heard, each level of branches indicates about one year of growth. Sure is a good Forest for lumber as it matures

Do you use your chipper enough to warrent the cost of one? I'm looking at buying the same one you have but the only use I have for it is to chip slabs and my slabs are all hardwood
Hi Terry I find I use it quite a bit for all the brush and slab wood I’ve got around here
What is the largest slab you can put in that chipper? Some of the slabs I get are a quite wide and jam in the shoot of my chipper.

@@sawingwithsandy Ok, way more often than i was thinking, thanks! The zerc fitting on the top/back of the chipper wheel, when i grease mine, i'm not seeing where the grease comes out. how many pumps are you giving that one?

Unfortunately I don’t have anyone available to help with the chores. In a perfect world I’d have help with most tasks but unfortunately I don’t and so rely on my cell phone on the event of emergency (and working safely of course)
Maybe you've covered it before in an older video that I haven't made it to yet, but may I ask how big your property is? Are those pine trees planted by man? They seem to be very linear, so that's why I ask.
Anyway, I've been looking at this wood chipper too while I wait for my saw mill to show up. I have a '09 John Deer 4320 (48hp at the motor) and have 33 acres of forest. We've recently done some thinning as part of wildfire mitigation plan, and I'd certainly love to be mulching up branches and putting the organic material back on the forest floor to trap moisture and improve soil conditions. It's nice to see some real world uses for the machine!

Sounds like a great tractor and plot of land you have. I also am trying to bring my forest back to natural over time with selective cutting. At the rate I cut trees sure will be a while for that to happen though

I’ve got 5 full Ibc cages of slab wood as firewood right behind my tractor and firewood logs everywhere and so I end up making these into something I need which is the wood chips

This is interesting, so the logging trails you have that are muddy and wet do the chips dry it up well? I have many and never thought of doing this. I always thought you need rocks and gravel to properly solidify them but I could see this work. Thanks for sharing always enjoy watching.
I find the chips keep my tires on lighter vehicles from creating ruts. It also allows for me to groom the trails with my harrow behind the atv
@@sawingwithsandy Good dry firewood is like having money in bank. It is worth money years after cutting. I know that you have a problem with waste slaps, so you need an engine like this: th-cam.com/video/2Kmtjdx4jko/w-d-xo.html . So you don't need to store slabs, just make firewood at once. And directly to bag.
Make chips from waste wood like branches and small diameter wood, not from firewood.
