  • The Kiwi’s feathers resemble fur, it has whiskers, and lives in the dark - in short, it has thrown out the rule book of bird biology. But how did a flightless bird find itself on islands in the middle of the ocean? From the rainforests of northern Australia to ancient caves in one of New Zealand’s wildest places, we discover how the secret to the kiwi’s success may have become its gravest threat.

The large eagle was only found on the South Island. When man came to NZ in 1300, within 100 year's, had killed off every species of Moa. With the largest species female's reaching 3.6 meter's. But the male's were much smaller, almost half the size. To where they were suspected to be a different species for a long time. The male's probably sat on the eggs, because the females would crush them. The smallest species was about the size of our modern turkey. Or 30lbs.

Nothing about controlling the introduced possum, rat, and stout to a once mammal free pair of islands?

Cierto, deberían de dedicar más estrategias no solo en salvar algunos huevos de kiwis sino también controlar lo más posible esos predadores no endémicos. Pero me imagino que ya se está haciendo y sería tema de un muy buen documental como este

An ostrich egg is much bigger, but a kiwi egg is indeed huge compared to the bird!

@@Cat-tastrophee funny you mention this right now. Just a second ago, I learned where the term "Easter egg's" came from. The term used to describe when you find something that shouldn't be in the film. It came from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cast got bored, and had an Easter egg Hunt, but didn't find them all, but filmed anyway. When people began watching it thousands of times they started to find the Easter egg's. ✌️🤟

How are the kiwis raised in captivity going to know how to be parents to their own chicks???
