wow, that's a man powered elevator if i ever saw one. i once thought of doing something like that myself at one point, auto doors and everything. that way you know when someone is in the basement. as for the fluories, they are great, love the starters. and the whole "one more time" thing is very relatable!!!

They are pre-heat vs rapid start or instant start... Basically, there are antique ballasts driving those lights... In contrast, a modern ballast makes for a boring fluorescent light because they just turn on and don't have separate starters.
