- Since his earliest performances in 2004, comedian Rory Scovel has always made every attempt to incorporate improvised elements into his stand-up sets. In March of 2018, he decided to find out what would happen if he fully improvised the show from start to finish for six straight nights. Set at Relapse Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, this documentary directorial debut for Scott Moran showcases the highs and lows of a comedian putting himself through an intense test of spontaneous humor for six different shows.

One of my favourite comedians of all time. Criminally underated
As one of the top comics in the game, Rory has been underrated for YEARS. Now he's just bragging saying, "I don't even need the MATERIAL to be good anymore".

This was from start to finish incredibly enjoyable and hilarious. The part where he has 4 audience members wearing table cloths as he preaches like a cult leader was great

This is one of the most unique specials I've ever seen. Two men on two very different journeys that for whatever reason really fit together. Inspiring on all fronts. Killer, killer week of shows!! I just looked in up (late 2023) and it looks like Relapse Theatre is still open!! Congrats, dudes!

Bob’s story made this video even more interesting, what an incredible back story for a venue and an incredible performance by Rory. I think Mark Normand described it perfectly, it felt like he was hanging around with his friends just trying to make each other laugh.

best comedian ever. I was lucky enough to go see his show at the relapse theatre in 2018 for his taping of his netflix special and it was legendary . getting to know the history with the theatre was dope too

Rory is a true student of comedy. He’s like an unbeatable escape artist with every trick in existence up his sleeve. Creating his own new challenges and obstacles to keep the game fresh and constantly hone his craft - German Guy, glad-handed southern dude, etc.

It's really unique to be sitting as a viewer knowing its all improvised, simultaneously enjoying the comedy and feeling the stress of finding the next angle it could go as if I was on stage. Loved the special.
This and Bo's Inside have been the coin for 2020-2021. As someone lucky enough that I could stay inside quarantined the whole time, they both hit hard. Bo's is how I felt and Rory's is that feeling of getting out for the first time and bursting with energy.
Thanks, Conan, for bridging the gap between the 90s and 2020s by showing me comedians are still willing to explore the depths of the comedy well. Tremendous talent, Rory! I'll likely add you to the list of comedians in the lexicon under "Most Talented." Conan and I both probably care about you crafting your art. :)

Been a fan of Scott and Rory since Modern Comedian and you're both still crushing. This is great and Netflix should have paid good money for it, the idiots. The story of the theatre is like some Tiger King wtf bonus. Awesome!

Rory is just the definition of positive energy! Mark Normand put it well when he described it like "being drunk/high and killing with your friends." It felt more like shit shooting between friends, than viewing a rehearsed performance and it has changed how i'll view comedy specials! Appreciate you!

The story of the theater adds so much to this, makes Rory's act feel that much more special.
Rory Scovel Tries Standup For The First Time is one of my favorite specials that I can rewatch over & over, so finding out about this was so exciting! These shows seemed so fun & I hope to one day be able to see Rory perform in person. The story about Relapse was incredible. It seems like a really cool venue that I would love to be able to visit if I’m ever in Atlanta (& it’s still open). That’s another thing I love about comedy specials like this where the venue is integral to the performance - we as the audience learn what venues performers love to perform in & what makes them so special. Anyway, great work by everyone involved & thank you for getting this out there.

This is next level. Truly incredible documentary/special. The story of the club is so endearing, and had me so engaged all the way to the end. And the commitment to the work and to your craft and getting better and stronger as a comic is inspiring. Most importantly, it was hilarious. Great work.
