Thanks Jim, we shared this with our local garage re our 1.0 fiestas shifting issues and it did indeed turn out to be this very issue. The bearing failing had also damaged the gearbox casing so we've ended up with a complete reconditioned box.
My ford fiesta has just got to the stage of needing a new 1st and 2nd syncrho replacement, oddly enough my first gear was fine when I first noticed, 2nd wouldnt engage coming down the gears but was fine going up, then 1st became problematic but after a few months fixed itself, but now about a year later 1st will no longer engage unless im basically at a stand still. Off to the gearbox guy I go! I also had my engine replaced by ford as well due to the gasket leak, funnily enough my engine went pop about 100 yards from the dealership on my way home from work, convinient! They replaced the whole engine on the recall though so luckily it didnt cost me anything.
bearing failure is common on these gearboxes. They also only have 1.3 litres of 75w ford ford oil in them when we effect a repair and the gearbox is refitted we use fully synthetic 75w90 oil filled to the level plug NOT 20mm below it as specified by ford, this is @1.8 to 1.9 litres.. You may lose 1 or 2mpg, the gear change is still fine and we have not had one go bad since. There is no drain plug so the car is set up on a ramp leaning to the nearside and the drive shaft is removed. only a very small amount of the original oil is left in the very bottom of the diff. The oil that comes out is invariably very dark.
I've just bought a 2020ford focus eco booste mhev had it 3 weeks with 31k on the clock second gear juat gone , grinding and won't select now waiting to be in the Ford garage, strange
Got a 2017 and 2018 fiesta in the family. One had box failure between 30k and 40k fixed under extended warranty. Now second one is just starting to whine at 47k. Seems to stop when warmed up though. Changes gear and drives fine for now.
Wonder if you can help I’ve got a 1.0 ecoboost fiesta that when I select 5th and let clutch out it misses the cog and makes that noise like it’s hitting the edge of the gear teeth
Unfortunately thats fairly common, youll need the gearbox removing and stripping, youll probably find 5th gear and uts syncro need replacing.... theres a short video on my channel showing this fault I believe (although it may be 2nd gear its essentially the same thing )
Great video Jim👍🏻Just wondering can you do a future video on how to change switch pack (door handle drivers side Mk8 fiesta seems to be tricky one would appreciate it👍🏻
My fiesta 2017 1.0LTR T ecoboost is having problems in 1st gear when I’m stopped at the traffic lights or junction, won’t let me pull out of gear when clutch is in, and car will start jolting forward. Is this the same problem? And does anyone know how much is would cost to repair or replace ? 🫠
Do you think it could be a lack of oil? I noticed that there was very little oil in these boxes. I have always struggled to pass the 2nd (New car 2018, 1.0 Ecoboost)
Im not sure to be honest, I wouldnt have thought so as older / more reliable boxes ive seen with hardly any oil left in them which needed topping up hardly ever went bad, i honestly think its because they are built cheap, but thats just my opinion... thanks for watching 👍👍
@@ALLTHINGSJIM I had checked my box level by building a rod as explained by Ford and the level looked way below. However, I have no leaks. I'm thinking of adding oil to get to the level of the plug.
Hi Jim, this video is exactly the problem we are having with our 2019 Ford fiesta 1.0 ecoboost 6 speed manual. What does it cost to do this repair ?, do you offer this repair service ?.
Hi Jim, great video thanks. I am trying to help an old mate who has one of these with a gearbox issue. I am an engineer but the last gearbox I had in bits was probably a Mk1 Ford Escort !. May I ask please if the Eco system has in anyway a connection with this gearbox whatsoever. Basic common sense would tell be a positive no, but, have to ask anyway. Much appreciated n thanks
Hi there, No the "ecoboost" is just part of the engine, the gearbox is like any other , a set of gears shims syncros and bearings. Thanks for watching 👍
@@ALLTHINGSJIM Thank very much Jim, truly do enjoy your videos. I knew I was that far out of touch and sure, and a manual box is, and always I guess will be, a manual box - even a Mk1 Escort. keep up the good work mate !
Mine is OK 90% of the time. Sometimes hard to put in 1st and going from 1st to 2nd. No crunching, noises or any other problems. Does it sound like the gearbox or selector issue?
Has anyone had a whining noise n/s/ft but no problems with the box otherwise? I’ve taken my 2018 1.0 6 speed manual to 2 garages 1 couldn’t hear the noise and the other could. Both said carry on driving until it either gets louder or I get problems changing gear 😳. Oil level is fine no leaks but I suspect a bearing. It’s always been a little notch going from 5th to 6th but fine in other gears.
Yes me. Did you solve it? I'm in exactly that position. 2918 Ford Ecoboost 6 speed manual. Can hear a quiet whine (new) when rolling down hill in any gear or neutral. Depends on road speed not engine speed. Seems to get quieter and sometimes not audible as car warms up. Ford main dealer said they could hear it but wanted small fortune to investigate. Just this week I drove it to a gearbox specialist and by the time I got there it had stopped making a noise. Changes gear and drives fine. Have also decided to keep driving it until its repeatable.
@@ColinWatters no I didn’t but I took it to two garages who both investigated and took it for a test drive. They could hear it and thought it maybe a gearbox bearing but just to keep driving it and come back if it got louder. 2,500 miles on and it’s still there, still quiet. I could have said drop the gearbox out find the faulty bearing and change it. But the cost wasn’t worth it tbh.
Hi Jim, I'm really hoping you can help, the gearbox on my 2019 fiesta st-line X is making a horrible groan and struggling with shifting into 2nd (tries to pop out) like you mentioned in this video. I'm considering getting a replacement box fitted before I sell the car but I'm unsure how to find the part number I need for a replacement gearbox, do you know how I can find it?
You normally can see a parts sticker on the top of the box which will have a set of numbers and letters somewhere around near where the gear cables attach (example:M1BR7002CFF), also sometimes they have a flat part on the casing with the part number stamped on.... failing that just go to a ford dealer ask them how much for a gearbox giving them your reg and chassis number and once theyve told you the price ask for the part number 😉
Nice to see someone actually repairing a gearbox. Nowadays it’s usually just an exchange box on offer.👍

@@ewanmayock8423 so my cars actually going in to have the gearbox redone in a week or so at a specialists, I was quoted £820 for the rebuild.

Turned out to be two bearings in the gearbox.

what gearbox does the ecoboost 1ltr use? i need to know the number. mine is a 2016 5 speed gearbox
That would be the Getrag iB5
What is weight this gearbox?
2019 mk5 focus 1.0 eco boost with same problem but 3rd gear, 29k miles 😮
It sounds to me thats a built in Fault, so they can extort more money out of us.JMO. I have this problem on my Fiesta S Line. why just second gear?
