Sometimes we are our own worst enemies. I have the same EU7000is and would never allow it to sit outside without cover. You probably figured this out by now. Anyways, I am very impressed how smart you were in regards to the machine. You did well. We learn everyday......

A few things... 1. The generator should not sit out side in the rain. It must be kept under a shelter. 2. When changing the oil the a new crush washer should be used each time. 3. I hope with 164 hours this is not the first time you changed the oil. I would suspect the the reason it would not start is the electronics got wet. When it dried out it started. As others has stated please read the owners manual for maintenance. Weather you spend $600 or $6000 for a generator they have to be maintained and cared for.

@Patrick Faricy The EU7000 has a catalectic converter. It has to get hot to burn off the carbon. Otherwise it will clog. Read your owners manual how often and how long to run it.

@Patrick Faricy The owners manual doesn't say anything about running it. The only thing it says is to put a teaspoon of oil in the spark plug hole if you are going to store it for a year

Have exact same model for past 6 year ,I kept it in generator shed , maintain regularly and took the small battery out and attached a larger battery placing it outside of generator in the shed . With the battery inside it rattles and connectors go loose . And in cold Canadian climate I like to have a reliable battery. So far I haven't had any problem with the machine.

I know EXACTLY what happened to your generator because it just happened to mine. It's not related to battery, oil level, water intrusion or anything. Inside the battery compartment, at the top part of it, there is a white wire connector. That connector tends to come off on its own when you mess with the battery. Just push that connector all the way until it clicks. I spent 3 hours taking everything apart looking for the problem. The ignition circuit is routed through that connector plug lol.

My Honda 6500iu generator lasted a total of 34 hours before the inverter failed. $1,700 repair job. Always garaged and expertly maintained. Was past the warranty period, and despite low hours, Honda would not even give me a break on the repair.

Most likely low oil level. On level ground, the oil should almost be spilling out of the lower edge of the filler neck. The machine will not run with low oil. It's actually a feature to prevent you from damaging the engine. Don't want to sound rude, but please read the manual. I have found it helpful to dedicate a plastic bottle marked with the correct amount of oil. This makes oil changes much simpler, and you don't have to worry about overshooting and making a mess.

Oil quality should never keep it from starting, oil level definitely would. I have a small and a big honda generator. I know the oil level sensors can be unbelievably touchy, I always make sure it's to the full mark on the stick and setting on something level and solid. Ethanol gas will do that to if it sits a few weeks until the junk gets cranked through the engine and new stuff gets in. I highly recommend non ethanol fuel for small engines. Hopefully it was just a freak glitch, Honda's are top notch machines, I've had mine running for multiple days at a time (fueled up even when running) and in terrible weather

Thanks for the tip. The oil was on the dip stick but not sure high high now that you mentioned it. I heard about the gas issue. But the gas was no more then two weeks old and topped up the morning. Fingers crossed it was a one time thing. Thanks for the comment and please subscribe. Merry Christmas.

That generator has a electric fuel pump in it, when the battery came unhooked it could of had something to do with it. They also recommended replacing the screen on those pumps every so often, I can’t remember when but look it up, could possibly be the reason if it wasn’t getting gas.

Yikes. Not sure where to start. As an educated generator operator and with 25+ years of mechanical experience, I think your the only person on TH-cam that has that much negative to say about an EU7000. For those in the know, this generator is the gold standard of the 5000-8000 watt inventor generators. Do your own research, but cost is the only factor Honda doesn’t win in most all cases.
Keep the battery charged and fresh fuel in the tank and you will be happy with your investment for the next 20 years.
Sure, you can get a LiFan powered machine like any of the “Duro”’series, a modern clone engine powered Predator or even a no-name China model. They will work…and will probably do the job. But find parts for them in 10 years. The aftermarket you say! Right. Find me aftermarket parts for generators that are 20 years old.
The Chinese copied Honda because it’s the best. What they can’t copy is the parts/service network that you have access to when buying a genuine Honda.
If you need to make a legitimate complaint, you need to consider the above context before making a video about inconvenience, not a product defect.

OK Number 1 - left it out in the weather. Sure, it is an outdoor machine but for $6k I’d have it on a pallet out of the mud and at least some form of shelter.
Number 2 - that oil looked like it came out of a diesel. Respectfully, take better care of your gear. Oil intervals are typically pretty frequent with those little 4-strokes.
Number 3 - these little engines have pretty sensitive oil level sensors and will shut them down if they detect it as too low. You have your machine sitting in mud and likely very much out of level (another reason to set it up on a pallet) The filler may read full but I’d bet it ran low - certainly looking at the state of the oil that came out of it. Ensure your machine is setting level to get a proper read on oil amount 😉 Engines will burn a small amount of oil over time which also suggests its been awhile since you serviced it. Running and vibrating on soft wet ground pretty much guarantees it is going to work itself out of level.
Number 4 - little tip on the filler cap. They are kind of hokey and will EASILY thread in wrong and mess up the plastic threads. So when you want to turn it in gently wiggle it flat against the hole and slowly turn it backwards (counter clockwise). When the threads match you’ll feel it drop in a little. From there twist it in properly. Works pretty much every time.
Other than that, nicely done. You are willing to diagnose and get your hands dirty. Already well ahead of 75% and more self sufficient than most people 👍🏼

Thank you; that was informative and fun. I have the same model and it has been very reliable until recently when someone working for me left it where it could get wet - under the dripline from the roof - and it did. It is just not starting with the auto-start since it got wet, and the pull-start is much too hard for me to pull. Grrr. Unfortunately, all the small-engine-repair shops believe in us leaving our equipment there for a 2-3 week backlog. I know there are some guys who will come onsite so I'll check that out. But I sense a new business idea for treating small equipment repair like when one makes an appointment for auto repair...

Running regular 10-30 oil in the winter? Good for warmer weather, but the 7000 won't start with congealed oil. Use a synthetic like Amsoil or Mobil 1. Suggest weight would be 5-10 if stored outside in the cold. Keep a charge on the battery, as it can run down easily.

It always starts back up may take an hr sometimes several but always starts back up. The last two times I have ran it with no issues after leaving the gas cap open a bit so I'm thinking it was a vapor lock issues. Question has you generator done this again since the first time.

Usually an engine randomly shutting down when is due to a failing magneto ignition module.
But on a Honda or clone don't rule out the oil level sensor "control module". This is the small module that acts to amplify and latch the output of the oil level sensor.
In many engines the oil level sensor is a simple float switch that grounds out the ignition primary. This works, but isn't especially reliable. The magneto primary can briefly put out several amps of current, with can cause a variety of bad effects on an electrical contacts that are barely brushing against each other while immersed in oil. In the right conditions the contacts will arc through the oil without shunting enough power to kill the spark and shut off the engine. That will either grow an insulating layer, or erode the contacts.
Honda added added a module to avoid this. The module has two wires to pass the switch current, and a grounded case. The module circuitry is based around an SCR that latches 'on' as long as it is carrying current, along with several capacitors and other components. Once the current through the float switch reaches a high enough average level, the module switches on for several seconds to conduct all of the magneto current through its grounded case instead of the float switch.
The failure is when the module becomes too sensitive. Rapidly rising magneto voltage can falsely trigger it without any current flowing through the float switch. Normally there is a simple circuit to avoid this, based on a capacitor and two resistors, but that can degrade and fail, or simply fail to compensate for the changing sensitivity of an aging SCR.

That generator starts even without a battery in it. How often you change that oil? Also if you live in a cold place, you should use synthetic oil, I'll start easier in cold weather. It's easier to use quart oil instead the 5 gallon jug, the generators uses one quart of oil . you can fill it all the way until it shows on the oil hole. I own two of those, one used daily for about two months and had no issues. Buy a magnetic drain plug and a magnetic dipstick those help a lot.

Nice video….sorry you had to go thru that because Honda puts a lot of great engineering in all its products. I read in my user guide for the same unit that the Gen in order to protect itself when the oil reaches that point it will not start and changing to oil at recommended 25 hrs will keep this from happening also, I would highly recommend getting a shelter for it to keep the rain and snow off it. Look into getting a Gen tent for it. The tent works great and will keep it dry and your investment will be better protected while you keep the PM up to date.

How long was the spark plug in? I change it once a year or at least check the gap. It sounds as though you don’t have a spark and why it doesn’t turn over.
I’ve had my generator over 3 yrs and it is covered with a lid so it doesn’t get rained on. This year 4th year is the first time it didn’t start and it was the battery, but more than that, I put in a higher crank amp for colder weather since the manufacturer’s battery would start below -6C . With a 310CCA battery (ie doesn’t fit in battery housing)it starts every time in winter. I think Honda’s tolerance on the battery is too tight for cold weather. While it’s a good generator, I don’t find much support from the company. Disappointing.

Just add some oil and that is about 98 % of the time is why it won’t start or start and then stop just add some oil because it has a low oil sensor that protects the motor from people that don’t service their generators.

You need a new SPARK PLUG. Get an NGK BPR6ES that is the standard plug but I would upgrade that plug to the NGK IRIDiUM ONE NGK BPR6EIX. That plug will last much longer.

If that has a carb instead of fuel injection then it could be gas has jelled up in the carb. Happened to me with a brand new Honda 2200. Sat with ethonal gas in it for 6 months. So I run the fuel out totally every time i'm done.

You go by the engine hours when you determine oil change intervals. Some change theirs as frequently as every 25 hours, in the smaller eu2200i generators. I don't know what the EU77000is interval is, but I usually change my eu2200i oil every 50 hours. II actually think I'm about to go to every 100 hours or maybe 75. t's a tiny amount of oil that's constantly being splashed around. I think it should be changed fairly frequently since it's such a tiny amount. 14oz for mine. I have gotten the oil change to taking just a couple of minutes from start to finish. No filter, just suck out the old oil and refill. I don't even drain it I use an oil evacuator pump, just suck it all up from the dipstick area, then fill it back up with a premeasured 14oz of fresh oil.

As far as petrol generators go Honda's are as good as they get. However....reliability is not 100%. I have a pramac 6kva silenced diesel which I brought brand new in 2004 and has never ever failed!! Only serviced it once. She starts first time come rain or shine no matter how cold. I had it in storage for 3 years and still started first time!! I ran it on almost Max load for 8 days once and no problems at all. They are about 4 x the price of a petrol equivalent but much more economical and reliability is outstanding. Very low maintenance too. I have 2 x 5 kva Honda's which are often a complete nightmare to start. In the UK you will pay about £3700 for a 6kva super silenced diesel. Not sure what that is in Canadian money? They are very quite too. Very low dB even on Max load with the casing enclosed and almost a 20 hour tank. Pramac p6000s is the model I have and is such a good bit of kit!! It's fully rain and storm proof too. Diesel generators weigh far more than petrol but a completely different level of outstandingness!! Good luck 👍 💓

First of all, you need to make sure that you do not get any sand in that motor or you will blow it up and it will not work and the other guy made a comment. It should not be out in the rain at all. And if it is out while it’s raining, you need to cover it with something the water getting in there is probably not helping the situation. But you just need to put some kind of a canopy over it when it’s raining outside it will short out not changing the oil is not gonna make the engine stop running.

If you just get a piece of plywood from Home Depot and just put the generator under a 4‘ x 4‘ sheet of plywood that will keep the rain out of the electrical that’s what shorted the generator the first time when it rained out and the generator got wet but like I said, if you build a little lien two to put the generator under when you’re getting that rain, it won’t hurt the generator anymore

People scrolling by would assume that this generator is no good.
Your last words were that you love it.
You failed to service it and keep it out of the rain. Over 160 hours without an oil change?! You have a manual. Do you know how to read?
    It’s 100% YOUR fault.

Honda generator: thumbs up. I love it!

On cold nights below 30° you should definitely be using 5W-30. So did you end up putting the right amount of oil in your machine. How long did you go with the oil that you had in the machine? You should make some kind of shelter for your generator to sit under it doesn't have to be big. Read your manual for your machine before you start using it

Hello and liked the video.....to a point.
Blue connector at battery access is for a battery maintainer to avoid not having electric start when generator not in use of a long period of time.
That being stated: VERY disappointed that the fuel injected unit would not pull-start!
UPDATE: Smart unit. Would not start because oil level too low. BAD USER!
As for battery connection, the fault is on the seller of your gen-set. Part of the delivery process.
Oil issue, not "usage" only the low level trying to save the engine (low oil level monitor). You have severely neglected this unit and must accept some responsibility.
This video is not representative of a Honda generator. Only a complaining Karen.
