  • In this video I review a 2000 Chevy Astro which is the second generation model of this mini van sold from the 1995 to 2005 model year and sibling to the GMC Safari. In this video I do a full walkaround, discuss features on the interior, cover technical specs and take it for a test drive.
    If you're located in the PNW, take a look at Wholesale Auto Connection for more good used vehicles like this at www.wholesalea...

    Hi, I live in Ecuador and I have an AWD Astro Van for more than 15 years (1996 model fully equiped) and I have traveled all over my country with this Van. It have taken me and my family to the beach, the jungle, the high mountains (almost 5.000mts or 15,000 feet), through mud, rivers, sand, and my Van always works super good. The powerful engine, the AWD and ABS brakes make us feel super safe. I will never sell this car! And also parts are not expensive and still easily available in my country.

    I bought a ugly astro from a state college for $1300. Only 102k miles. I put another $1200 into fixing , ghetto paint, and tint. I love my 1st van. Astros are the best looking modern vans I think besides the 70,80s ones. Plus it isn't a ugly mini van. Truck body 💪

    I have a tip for all Chevy Astro Van owners. Have you ever wanted to turn off the headlights while the vehicle is running? Push your dome override button three times. You are welcome.

      I just realized that's why my headlights turned off one night when I was driving home from work. I was trying to press the override button to stop the interior light from flickering due to a bad sliding door switch and I must have barley touched the button and it thought I clicked 3 times. Took 5 years to figure that out lol.

    The van that CAN! It's a shame they don't make a mid-sized van that's body-on frame and RWD with a pushrod V6 engine that's tried and true. Today, it's all front wheel drive, 4 cyl unibody turbos riddled with garbage electronics

    • @JRobert111111
      @JRobert111111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Astro/Safari vans were never body-on-frame. Contrary to popular belief, the 85-05 Astros are ALL unibody. When you read about them it mentions a "full ladder frame", but that is the typical unibody frame welded onto the body which is a full ladder frame design. Nor was the Astro/Safari ever built on the S-10 chassis, which is body on frame. They only shared the engine and transmission. Even so, the pushrod V6, no whiney turbo crap and all of the garbage electronics of newer cars. Not to mention new cars are just downright butt-ugly. Myself, I have a 93 Astro and an 06 Tahoe, both great cars.

      I doubt it with current trends it’s just a niche market, most of what people want out his van is either in a crossover or an suv or what of the pretend off-road wagons, plus there’s a rise in the truck camper conversion market.
      Edit: not saying they can’t cause we definitely live in a weird time for cars now

      that's a good question? they had something refined and reliable. i guess they thought bigger is better. with all of these giant size pick-ups and vans, hard to park, diesel and way more expensive. upper management dropped the ball. In 2007 I bought a 1992 Chevy Astro with 176,000 miles for $1500. After driving it for 17 years , putting very little money into it, it's finally gotten to the point of not being worth repairing.
    So I've just bought a 1997 Astro with about 176,000 miles for $3500. At age 74, I hope to never buy another car, and to have gone through life with never buying a new car.

    ASTRO vs EXPRESS i went searching over and over and over. Bought Astro, traded with Express now.
    I'm very happy with Express.
    They are pretty much the same price used and MPG. But Express is much more reliable, easy to work on, parts plentiful, more up-to-date, AWD available, Yes bit bigger but no bigger than Silverado so not too bad getting around (Express is basically Silverado with a Van body), and drives very nice.
    Also, Express has higher crash rating than Astro which is really terrible.

    • @kw6713a

    • @jwc3104
      @jwc3104 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ms Lee I bought 2007 Express 1500 AWD high-top conversion van. MUCH roomier than Astro, very comfortable. For MPG, I can get 17mpg on freeway, keeping under 70MPH. I think you get similar mpg on Astro.

    • @jwc3104
      @jwc3104 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ms Lee Mine is 5.3L V8. I would NOT get a V6 powered Express, and there are express 2500/3500 with 6.0L V8 engine, but 5.3L is plenty powerful.
      Astro has been discontinued for 15+ years. You can still get Astro parts, but Express is still in production. GM sold lot more Express than Astro. Express powertrain and chassis is basically from Silverado, so parts are plenty. Walk into any junkyard in North America, you'll find dozens of Express.

    I have a 2004 GMC Safari. 249800 miles and counting. She's a Bitch ! Rechipped it, along with putting a bigger pipe and Turbo flow muffler on, runs like a mo fo ! I agree. I own a 2004, but in the rust belt. It has a reliable engine and transmission, but overall it's a disaster, imo. It's the most dangerous vehicle I've ever driven in the snow, although mine is only 2wd. It gets stuck easily, and the rear end breaks free easily when it's slick out. It's a gas hog. For $3500 is has been pretty reliable for the last, almost 7 years, as a work van full of tools and material. I've beaten the piss out of it, but it's time to go to the yard. The rear shock mount has rusted through and broken off of the frame.

I’ve driven a number of them, and owned one.... A disaster looking for a place to happen!! If you like “chasing” a car that wants to be anywhere but on the road or in the lane.... This is the car for you!! A great drivetrain in a garbage vehicle! The 4.3 and 4L60E is a great combo, but the steering and suspension are the worst ever!! DO NOT BUY ONE!!! By contrast the Ford Aerostar runs “on rails”. It goes where you point it, stays in it’s lane... drives itself. How can two vehicles be so different?.... What a shame!.... Garbage..

      @@keithhanson1411 The Astro does have a unique 2 idler arm setup. GM had the better idea on the original "threaded" idler arms, but they wore out quickly. Then the aftermarket came out with the "ball and socket" design idlers. They do NOT work as all of that extra movement greatly changes your "toe" adjustment. The idea was to have a solid pivot point with no other movement, and also to be a low friction design as these vans have a very weak pull to center versus other cars. Back in the late 90s, TRW had a "heavy duty" series of idlers with brass bushings, grease zerks, etc. to work like the OEM idlers, but much more robust. I put them on my 93 Astro back in 1997 and they're still in great condition. Other than those, everything is still factory on my front end including ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. I do lube the front-end twice a year though. Good handling, never wears tires unevenly, etc.

      You had a broken ball joint or control arm. It can be a thing with these vans apparently. When a car darts on way or another for ANY reason there something wrong with a part. I mean who would be stupid enough to believe the manufacturer would sell it that way.

    I would have pointed out that 2001 had improved ecu and small improvementts 2003-2005 had improved suspension geomety, 4 wheel disc brakes, front and rear sway bars, 6 lug wheels and many other MAJOR inprovements.

    2000 was more-or-less a mid-cycle refresh. You got the new ignition, door chime, and headlight switch more like the new Silverado. I hope GM comes out with another Astro in the future. If it's anything like the old models, it will kick all the competitors' asses when it comes to rear leg room.

      Don't hold your breath on a new Astro, nor van. The Traverse was GM's replacement for the Astro. I like the Astro a lot more.

    That was helpful thank you. I’m going to look at a LS AWD Astro van to camperize, it’s mileage is low, it’s a 2002, and is said to be in great shape, what key things should I look for? I’d appreciate any advice as I’m not knowledgeable about them.

      No, and not enough room. There's more room to utilize either a 5.3 or 5.7 in there vs a turbo charger.
