Also, first step should have been to turn the pattern into a Smart Object, so the resizing doesn't reduce affect it's original resolution

Never delete. Use a layer mask. You never know when you need to move some things around later and you'll have to redo all that work.
It should warp around the edge. Make a rectangle, convert to smart object, transform > warp, fix the design here as per your convenience.
