    Taiwanese Mandarin ≠ Hokkien
    Taiwanese Mandarin is the mandarin with Taiwanese accent but the same language China officially uses, while Hokkien is also called Taiwanese (language), belonging to Min language family mentioned in the video.

    Man, talk about nostalgic & informative. Although it’s been two years since the last SC video, I can surely and excitedly say you guys have picked up right where you left off in terms of teaching history and producing high-quality video. This was great! The footage and editing were both excellent & kept my interest engaged. The narrator was also smooth & clear. It’s so good to see this channel back up & running. I cannot wait to learn more about the world 🗺 & see what other video ideas pop up on here. Excellent work to EVERYONE involved on this staff!

    There are some big mistakes in the language part. At 3:40, the number now is about 80% (for spoken mandarin), and for writing the number is 95%. At 3:45 there is no source for this, and this is far from reality... And Min at 4:11(one dialect) is extremely similar to Hokkien at 4:35 (actually the same thing, slightly different by history). And Hokkien is not Taiwanese mandarin... Mandarin from Taiwan is mostly different in writing and is mostly called traditional Chinese.

    The myth about Taiwan sharing a common history with China is just that. The Taiwanese people actually share DNA and culture with Austronesian people in Pacific Islands such as New Zealand. Culturally speaking Taiwan shares similarities with both Japan and China because it used to be part of the Manchu Empire that colonized both Taiwan and China before Taiwan becoming a Japanese territory. The present day China inherits most of its culture from the defunct Soviet Union because Soviet funding and direct involvement created the People's Republic with no relationship to Taiwan.

    • @SL16867
      @SL16867 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      That's a ridiculous take among ridiculous takes. Indigenous Austronesian people are only about 3% of Taiwan's population. Roughly 96% of Taiwanese people are of Chinese descent.

    • @robertos4876
      @robertos4876 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SL16867, Your government lied to you. DNA sequencing has proved that over sixty-five percent of Taiwanese have Austronesian genes. Furthermore, of the two hundred seventy-eight haplotypes identified in non-indigenous Taiwanese those you call Chinese descents, thirty-one haplotypes are exclusive to Taiwan. That means that Taiwan is the origin of the Austronesian migration. file:///C:/Users/ROBERT~1.SUN/AppData/Local/Temp/MicrosoftEdgeDownloads/6dd3c2d3-e927-4aab-a227-9628fa8d5f6b/s41439-022-00228-3.pdf

    1. Taiwan uses Traditional Chinese characters, which generally have more strokes compared to the Simplified Chinese characters used in China.The characters that appear at 4:25 are actually Simplified Chinese characters, not the official characters used in Taiwan.
    2. Additionally, Taiwan's phonetic system is called Zhuyin, which has its unique symbols (as far as I know, it may be used only by Taiwanese people worldwide). The Zhuyin symbols are quite different from the English letters shown at 4:25.
    3. In some of Taiwan's laws, mainland China is still (controversially) considered part of the Republic of China's territory. (Referred to as "West Taiwan?")
