Gulliver is quite possibly a virus inspired by the ILOVEYOU worm, given the title similarities, the hearts and Gulliver being an actual worm-like creature as its 'avatar'. It's also obviously an AI, seen by the options in the title screen and the small text during the developer logos The inventory has PDF files in it, giving away that it might be actually a folder or a directory on Alan's computer, and the hearts are important files (pdfs being not as important to the system) Gulliver might analyze/"consume" the code of certain files and use it to optimize itself to spread more efficiently (3:03) and trick users (as ILOVEYOU did) into allowing it to spread to more users (3:35) Once it's no longer restricted to Alan's computer (inventory being no longer available) it proceeds to spread and multiply, allowing it more files and code to process and growing exponentially powerful until it takes over his computer and others, becoming a "SINGELTON" in the process, presumably taking over the entire internet at the end in a singularity event. Also, I'm guessing it's not "I love you, Gulliver" It's "I love you - Gulliver", something you might find in an email, the method used in the spread of the ILOVEYOU virus.
This video is a big reference to the "i love you" email worm. The heart icon is the same (or from another computer worm) The worm and the replication of hearts and gulliver represent how a computer worm replicates itself
I gotchu a year later: The victim (Alan) thinks he has control by denying internet access but thats exactly what he's supposed to think. In reality, all he had to do was click (symbolized by giving medicine--- I could explain this analogy but its too long.)
Yeah, same. I didn't realize it was a puzzle. I got really annoyed when I connected to the internet and then it opened up a webpage of gifts to buy and then I stopped playing the game to buy stuff. I was like, 'Man, this game is unwinnable!'
A Seed AI (a term coined by Eliezer Yudkowsky) is an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) which improves itself by recursively rewriting its own source code without human intervention
this has been shown before? what did he say when this was playing? was it behind the scenes "how its made" sort of stuff, or was it more "lore" related?
it was basically that alan was the lead programmer on gulliver and was showcasing the game like an E3 presentation. he talks about the dangers of letting gulliver online, where he'd be able to rapidly multiply his own intelligence by communicating with other copies of gulliver, eventually taking over the world. gulliver tricks him with an awkwardly worded prompt on his desktop, leading to gulliver physically materializing and attacking alan on stage.
There is no better way to be woken up in the middle of the night than by a notification for a new Alan Resnick video. Unfortunately I have now been sent into an existential and disturbed tailspin that will last hours before I can finally cry myself to sleep. Thanks Alan.
My little sweet corgi's name is gulliver, isn't that cool Alan?? HAHA YES! He eats and eats and eats. He is such a glutton! it's never enough Alan! I spend over a hundred american dollars a week just to satisfy him and he still wants more! He also eats ethernet cables and I have to keep going to radioshack and sometimes they aren't open for days! Alan can you have a word with my hungry pup? He doesn't listen to me anymore. I have to go, he is staring at the ethernet cable again and he bites really hard so I can't stop him anymore. Sorry Alan. Bye!
@@daveidmarx8296 Take it back! You take back what you said RIGHT NOW! Radio Shack isn't going anywhere, bub! It's an American institution! The nerve of this guy. I was just in their store recently, and purchased a y-cable for my Walkman, so that my grandmother can listen too. We listen to books on tape all the time. Her favorite is Mein Kampf, read by Leonard Nimoy.
Andrew Zaragoza Turns out you can pick it up as a Easter egg and skip it, but it takes a while (around 5 minutes). Just hold the use button next to it for about 5 minutes.
Douglas Rezabek heart medicine = the wisdom/knowledge we need to overcome personal difficulties. Alan fed gullivar a few times before he figured out how to make his own heart medicine, perhaps alluding to how we need some sort of help or guidance to achieve a level of autonomy or self awareness? Makes sense considering the ending suggested that gullivar, an AI, had become self aware (the PKD reference gave that away real quick) It also feels like there is some deeper symbolism in what happens to Gullivar after he connects to the internet
Modern game studios' lowest priority seems to be the game itself, meanwhile making flashy copyright/brand notices and data collection (internet connection nagging) their highest. Feels great to see it caricatured by Alan.

I like how the game navigation echoes the system for navigating the house from the Claridryl website (still accessible via WaybackMachine by the way) only now the inventory is completely useless :) Dina is a god!
I got an "Audio Renderer Error" and was asked to restart my computer as soon as the video started and thought, "Ha! Classic Alan Resnick." I only realized it was an actual error after a minute of waiting for the video to continue.
Dude, your desktop is so messed up with various porn, an open corpse, a pic of Shia Labeof among your pics and also 2pac, but I think youtube is caring as much as you are, soooo... yeahhhh.

James Price if you look closely, he did. The last box he clicks before everything goes weird says "would you like to NOT connect to the internet?" Which he replies "No" creating a double negative allowing him to access the internet.
a lot of people in the comments talk about the Seed AI part but not the 'Singleton' thing, so I looked it up. its a pattern that restricts the instantiation of a class to one "single" instance. so you end up enabling a semi-sentient strand of code that only make itself better with unknown intentions and eliminates any flawed versions of itself possibly I am not a computer engineer so if I got this wrong feel free to correct me

If you truly love Gulliver, you'd LET HIM CONNECT TO THE INTERNET.
Well he didn't not connect
You know he's just going to do his Tik tok's and watch the Joe Rogan.
No you Fool!

warpyoshi OH MY GOD ALAN LIKED YOUR COMMENT
He-hey!
I'd've never known that. That's pretty interesting man, thanks for sharing!
He hearted your comment. Oh shi--
The "I have no mouth but i must scream" reference was great.
Its uncomfortable and funny at the same time, but "I have no hunger, but, I must eat" is a fucking raw line
I guess it's a reference to the book "I have no mouth and I must scream"
i always got stuck on the part where he asks to connect to the internet for the third time. thanks

I'm glad you've kept your computer after all these years. Everything on your desktop saved accordingly.
If anyone has a chance to see Wham City live please do. This bit is way better when Alan is commenting during it.

Dylan Pierson you are a hero. Thank you for sharing.
I wish there were more Wham City videos on TH-cam :(

McKenna Pope Alan has a way of doing such things
Can't tell what is a greater piece of art. This video or the hentai on his desktop in the beginning.
Theres more if you look. Bottom right looks like furry porn
or the simpsons porn

Great tutorial Alan!
I still have the nightmares
I thought this was a tutorial on "How to Poorly Hide Your Porn"
Hey tutorial heads
I still miss alantutorial in a way
Hmm, just realized he always could've went with 'tutorialan'
Alan is so smart and so small... I wonder what his origin tale could be?

This is just as good as the first time I saw you preform this live! Thanks again Alan, I'll always appreciate how much your work has inspired me.
Gulliver connecting to the internet would be the end of mankind
I have a mouth and I wish I could scream, but my programming keeps me from trying.
IS THAT A-
great stuff love pausing the video every few seconds to read the little suntext and look at the icons on the desktop
Something about the eeriness in this video is just so funny. The whole thing you don't even know what you're looking at, it's perfect.
Alan, I can't hear you talking. I think your mic's broken again.
When is this game coming to Steam?
2092 it still has to he ported from his basement
Nome, it's in 2099 now

Incredible what Jerp is doing these days
Great walkthrough!! I didn't know how to get past the heart medicine question for ages!!

I’m gonna wait for the I Love You, Gulliver game of the year edition with the free DLC.

the connection to the "i love you" virus is interesting, as well as the reference to "i have no mouth and i must scream", another work about AI

Wait, if you check the messages, one asks if you don't want to connect. After we sure he didn't accidentally press"yes"at one point?
"Do you want to NOT connect?" And the choices were "No" and "Nope". So that's a yes.
