    Great ideas but i recon the integrity of the seal between the tyre and the small amount of concrete in the bottom will fail due to cattle pushing against the flexible tyre and eventually you will get water seeping out from the bottom and causing a problem with poaching. i know a farmer who did this once, it did work but he filled the bottom up about 6" above the rim of the tyre in the bottom which had the effect of encapsulating and sealing the whole bottom. Hope it works for you Josh.

      @@kdegraa yeah but, tires are onky partially rubber. I would not drink water stored in a tire unless there was no other option. Not ideal. That being said, I don't think cows live long enough to get cancer. As long as the water is flowing and not just sitting there it shoudn't be a problem.

    • @otov100
      @otov100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have a point but probably not a real concern. It would be interesting to do a lab test on the meat or milk to see how much toxin accumulated and if it was of any real concern for human consumption but I doubt it. I wouldn't want to drink tire water directly if there were other options. Having the cows drink it and then eating the cows would dilute any toxins.

    I keep goldfish in my stock tanks. Best part about the goldfish is that they will eat skeeters and their larva.
    They can live for years in a water tank through winter and summer. The only real problem will be if the water gets too hot, then you could get a bunch of floaters ☠️.

  • @banditmoon4399
    @banditmoon4399 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The only concern I would have with that system is that tires have dozens of toxic chemicals in them, and the toxins will leach out into the water. The toxins could show up in the animal meat.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      why would a tire have any toxins different from a Rubbermaid water tank? If tires were loaded with toxins...we'd be constantly exposed to them driving...we'll test the toxin theory at some point...maybe send off a water sample for a test....great idea!

    • @sunshine3914
      @sunshine3914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had looked into this because I can’t even be outside a new tire store without the vapor making my eyes, nose, lips, & lungs burn ( same with gasoline & diesel fuel ), but then I have hypersensitive receptors that seem to be getting more sensitive with age.
      Anyways, my findings...
      Q: Is it safe to grow vegetables in old tires?
      A: “Short-term, yes, tire planters are OK, although the soil in black tire planters will probably get hotter than most plants would prefer. Long-term, no, because the tire rubber will slowly biodegrade and release zinc, carcinogenic PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and other toxic compounds into your garden soil.
      Q: Are tires toxic?
      A: The short answer is that yes, they are. Tires contain a host of chemicals and metals that should not be in the human body. And they do gradually erode and break down, leaching those chemicals into the environment.
      Also, Rubbermaid makes plastic food containers, & plastic uses less harmful compounds.

    • @sunshine3914
      @sunshine3914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...but the life of beef cattle is rather short nowadays. So, less exposure.

    • @otov100
      @otov100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer We are constantly exposed when driving. They're not as bad as lots of other stuff but not as safe as food grade plastic. Awareness of particulate emissions from tires is just coming to light. That being said I woudn't really worry about it much for this application.

    Please reconsider using this due to the possibility of chemicals from the tire leaching into the water, especially when exposed to heat and sunlight 😬 Exposed steel wire used in the tires construction if ingested, can lead to the potentially fatal hardware disease. The wire can also cut or poke the cattle.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you do understand that there are tens of thousands of these tire water tanks all over the world...that a rubber/plastic water tank is industry standard. That I keep goldfish in these tanks 365 days a year and they keep the tanks clean, if the tank was leaching dangerous chemicals.....a goldfish would not survive. The tank is rubber, the pipe is plastic, the valve is plastic, the drain is plastic.....it's not harming any animals....and there's no metal wire to cut the cattle or give them any hardware disease. These tanks stay a constant 45-75 degrees all year long, with the acceptation of winter when they freeze on top. There's nothing wrong with a tire water tank, I'd be more concerned about drinking from a red solo cup than this tank

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've had no issues with "leaching" any chemicals, the tires are safe and this is pretty common practice all over the world, I keep fish in the tanks and they thrive so that tells me the water is pretty darn safe. The concrete will sometimes seal to the tire, and for added security I used "flex paste" to fill the gaps....worked great and the tire tanks leak very very slowly...maybe a slow drip dripping 40 gallons of fresh water into the tank daily

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      why would it? Lots of folks really concerned bout this tire having some sort of rubber in it that would be different than any other rubberized livestock tank...if it leached out poisons the EPA most certainly would not allow them to be used in forests and wetlands or out on the highways

I don’t have the room for them. 😭😭 been looking online for homes in Eastern shore of VA, North Carolina, and Alabama. I want to get the heck outta here and move to a state that has some snow but mostly milder winters. 😊

  • @Will7981
    @Will7981 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does the tire not leach unhealthy chemicals into the water, which are then consumed by the cows and stored in their fat to be consumed by the person who consumes that beef?🤔

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      let's think about this....would the EPA let a tire be produced that leaches chemical poisons into the soil or waterways? Do you get cancer from drinking from a styrofoam cup or red solo cup? Are the ice cube trays in your fridge made from oil based products? What about the water that comes out of your plastic faucet and rubber lined supply lines? The answer is no...it's not a health hazzard to the animals...if it were...rubbermaid wouldnt make water tanks from recycled rubber and plastic....odds are that every drink of water you've ever taken came through a petroleum based pipe of some sort

    • @Will7981
      @Will7981 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well bud, your wrong. Used tires do leach into the environment as they break down. They contain many harmful chemicals and heavy metals. There are plenty of reputable sources available online concerning this.

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer OK, If it don t get very cold there your most likely good. I am in Iowa a tire tank is mostly used below a pond . In summer use a float , in winter they take the valve off and put a cap on the pipe with a 1/4 hole in the side and it flows all the time . Have a great day !
