I teach it to kids like this
0-0, 1, 2: The pitch must be PERFECT to swing at
0-3: Don't freaking swing even if it is perfect!
1-0, 1, 2, or 3: Swing only if it is in your prime strike zone (lefties don't swing at pitches up and out in the zone and righties don't swing at pitches down and in)
2-0, 1, 2, or 3: Swing at anything close to the strikezone...if it is a difficult pitch to hit just foul it off. Better to foul a ball off than get called out looking.
This is the simple approach I use for kids 12 and under...It keeps them from thinking while in the box during the game...thinking makes batting hard for little kids.
