I’m really loving all your videos. Slightly off topic but I would also like to hear your take on how you interpret a chart as a conductor, the things you bring out of a band, the things you want to hear, what sets apart a top session band and a middle of the road band. Thanks for all the work your putting into these videos.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing! Those are both interesting topics. I’m thinking about making some vlog-style musing videos (in addition to the arranging tutorials) and those would both be great topics to think about.
Great stuff, thank you! I've first heard of the fact that every melody note can be combined with every bass note in a video with Jacob Collier, "Harmony in 5 levels of difficulty". I still can't quite get my head around it, so thanks for explaining it a bit more and showing the examples :) Cheers!
I remember that video! Jacob talked about it briefly, but since it was more of an entertainment piece (instead of a tutorial) he didn’t go into any detail about how it worked. Very entertaining though! Jacob Collier’s a boss.
Hello Elliot, thank you for this great lesson ! I was wondering what kind of software/plugins one could use to get realistic sounding playbacks from Sibelius ? Some suggestions for your next lessons : spread voicings and pads, countermelodies, voicing in 4ths, clusters, big band with woodwinds...
You aren’t hearing and Sibelius playback in my videos! The secret is that I record my examples with real musicians, and mix in Logic. I show the scores from Sibelius on screen, but the sounds you heard in this lesson are 4 layers of my trumpet and 5 layers of Will Vargas’ saxophones. The bass is midi, but the sound is from Logic.
@@PandemoniumBigBand That's why it sounds so good ! The MIDI playback is so unrealistic that it's hard to hear how an arrangement would sound with a real orchestra... Always better with real musicians !
Elliot you're so awesome, cheers! Also, in regards to your video you released today, I love the background music, it suits the video personality. And more importantly, you're embedding a sound into our heads that really connect us to your understanding of harmony. It's like how sneaky ass parents sneak broccoli into apicky kids diet by putting it inside a chick'n nugget. Keep up the great work mon frère !!
Thank you so much! Honestly, one of the reasons I use that particular track so much (The Cassowary) is because it doesn't have as many twists and turns as most of my other material!
Good eye. That is exactly what I did. The melody of the tune has a Bb on that down beat, so that is the way I chose to harmonize it. There are probably other good solutions to that too.
So very helpful. Have questions about the Sibelius set up . (ex.Reduction on score?) Thanks Elliot great revelations and explanations. How low can you put altered upper partials without losing chord identity? Ex scoring a C13#11b9? throughout the three sections?)
Good stuff as always. Not to carp, but losing the background music helps us focus on what you're saying, Elliot. Anyway, thanks for this!
Noted.
@@PandemoniumBigBandBUT it's because the music is so awesome that it distracts a little! :)
Uau! I'm Brazilian and I'm delighted with this content. Very good!
its makes so much fun watching your videos. i was looking for these kind of videos for a long time!!! im so happy!!! really nice!!! thanks man...
Thank you so much!
Thank you, Elliot! Always fun to hear your description of these things. And, they sound good! :)
Thanks for watching! I’m going back to basic concepts with the next one... this was more of an advanced idea.
BROTHER, YOU ARE THE BEST!!! You oooh really helped me!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Great revelations!! Thankyou Elliot>
Awesome Elliot! Thank you for sharing your wisdom
My pleasure!
nice and fun as always, thanks for sharing!
Love this series of yours

@@PandemoniumBigBand 😀 looking forward to it.
Fantastic tip!

Just to add my plea for "how to write chord sequences for entire/any melodies". I am assuming that your MSH method is only to be used sparingly.
Yes. Definitely meant to be used for it's effect. I suppose you could write an entire chart that way...

You are already there!
I don't follow the F Maj 7 chord symbol in m 4..? Looks like Gm7/F maybe moving to the FMaj7 next beat.Am I being too picky?

Ooh. Good question. I’ll put that on my future videos list.
The reduction in the score was purely for the demonstration. I would usually have a normal score without the reduction grand staff.
Interesting
I try
WHEW those horns are tight
" I feel dirty...." Ha!
Can't take this guy seriously with this constant giggling 😱😱😱😱
Yeah, I listened quite closely and failed to hear anything particularly funny.
Why have the background music ?- it ruins a otherwise truly excellent presentation.
Again… watch some of the more recent tutorials.
Have subbed!
