From their performance at Daytona in 1988 to now and they still sound amazing. Love the song, love the band, just love the sound of 80's tunes. Cheers!!
time passes by i used to listeng to this songs on the 80s now im 38 i still love this tunes and im not that kid from back then any more when you do something in life that other people likes no matter how old you are its going to be forever
i used to listen to this songs when i was 14 and im still listening to it now im 38 when some body does soimething beautiful like this it doesnt matter if time passes by dont like it dont listen to it this will live longer than you because this is good music
I listened to Robin do this song in 1988 and then came back to listen to this version almost 25 years later. Granted, his voice is rougher but the man can flat out sing. He tackles that high range power note at the end just like he did 25 years ago and that takes courage. No vocal props, no gimmicks, he just goes for it live and hits it. Just watching his face, you can tell the song is harder to sing and the high notes are harder to reach but he makes the effort every time. This guy and this band have been amazing for so long and the fact that they are not in the RRHOF is a crime.
***** Thanks for posting to me Leon. I was just discussing this fact with another person. I agree with you 100%! "Astonishing" is the perfect word to describe how durable Zander's voice has been since 1973. Even tho he is, in my "humble opinion", under-rated as a vocalist when people are describing "the best vocalists"....the fact that he is highly respected by other vocalists from the rock genre speaks volumes about how truly good he is. I personally think he and Cheap Trick should have been in the Rock HOF long ago. If nothing else, for the influence they have had on so many other groups. Thanks again for posting. Take care.
MrMike9158 this song would be out of reach for most singers in their 20s - guys like Adam Levine would sing the whole song in falsetto and without power - and this guy is still doing it justice in his 60s - unbelievable!
pcretrogamer Thanks for commenting. And you are SO right. So many singers today depend on their falsetto as if it's their primary voice and that is sad. You know at Robin's age, and being a past smoker, he doesn't have that breath capacity he had when he was young and yet he continues to use his full voice for the money shots. To me, that is amazing and is just one of the things that sets him apart. This whole band should have been in the RRHOF long ago but instead they induct RunDMC. It's a travesty and shoots their credibility to Hell! Sorry for the rant...lol. I'm old.
Whew! Had to watch that one 3 times in a row. Excellent! No matter what people say, The Flame is still one of my favorite Cheap Trick songs. It showcases Robin Zander's voice so well, and in my opinion he is THE BEST in the business! I think they all look and sound great and Tom's bass is a beauty!
Robin really has a lovely voice.. always has and still does. Kudos to the guys for still bringing their music to those of us who still rock out to the Cheap Trick sound.
This is simply an amazing song...I was lucky enough to see these guys a few weeks ago out here on the northeast. The band was good but Robin absolutely blew me away vocally, as well as his obvious commitment to the performance. He sings his ass off.
Great lead singers at this stage of their career usually turned the pitch lower as they grow older.. But this guy continues to sing the song as it was in the beginning when they first introduce this live.. I salute him doing this even if it's harder now to reach those high notes!
Wow...what a voice....robin still got it....spectacular song....and I been a die hard cheap tricks fan for long time....80s music stuck with me for ever...and still loving every minutes of it.....mesmerizing and beyond spectacular...80s era been most memorable....and 90s also...70s been fantastic...2000 fantastic....
so beautiful put, thanks for putting them in their place....he is still awesome....this was my ERA time....I loved these years....would love to go back and re-live them all over again....wouldn't change a thing....Cheap Trick is still freaking awesome!! I'M SO GLAD I GOT TO SEE THEM IN THE 80'S....I JUST LOVED THEM AND STILL DO!! YOU ARE SO RIGHT....THAT'S LIFE....WE ALL GET OLD....THANKS FOR POSTING THIS...
God, I am old!!!! I saw them in 1976 at the Red Lion Inn in DeKalb, Illinois... cover charge $1.00 with 50 cent drafts. Liked them so much I drove to see them again in Freeport, Illinois and Beloit, Wisconsin. Last time I saw them was in 2012 in St. Louis. I used to go into the record store that Rick's father owned in Rockford before I ever saw them as a band. Rick Nielsen-one of the most under rated song writers and guitarists in rock. Robin Zander-one of the most under rated but talented vocalists in rock music (and an excellent rhythm guitarist) and Tom Petersson- one of the more prolific bass players in rock and inventor of the 12 string bass. And Bun E. was an excellent drummer who authored several different drum tutorials. As influential as this band has been...WHY no RRHOF?????
+MrMike9158 RRHOF is concerned mainly with American rock. Seeing how Cheap Trick is one of the best-ever american rock bands, I guess it's because Jann Wenner blows dogs
I heard them on Austin City Limits and they were truly one of the best rock bands live; each member had awesome solos and the energy; it is a must see.
And this is for all the vocal dummies who try to say he isn't the vocalist he used to be. He still goes after the power note in this song...live...on stage...in front of thousands...no gimmicks...no tape loops.... And maybe it doesn't sound as smooth or pure as a studio version, but for his age and a live venue, it not only takes guts to go after it, but it sounds pretty damn good too. Lets see Geoff Tate do that with his early work...NOT. He wouldn't even attempt it. Zander rules.
Another night slowly closes in and I feel so lonely Touching heat freezing on my skin I pretend you still hold me I'm going crazy I'm losing sleep I'm in too far I'm in way too deep over you I can't believe you're gone You were the first You'll be the last Wherever you go I'll be with you Whatever you want I'll give it to you Whenever you need someone To lay your heart and head upon Remember after the fire After all the rain I will be the flame I will be the flame Watching shadows move across the wall Feels so fright'ning I wanna run to you I wanna call But I've been hit by lightning Just can't stand up for falling apart Can't see through this veil across my heart over you You'll always be the one You were the first You'll be the last I'm going crazy I'm losing sleep I'm in way too deep over you You'll always be the one You were the first You'll be the last
I remember when they first came out along with so many other great bands. You would see older people listing to Johnny Cash are some other country singer. Today you see people in there 50 60 and some even 70 listing to Cheap Trick Van Halen ext. The 80's came out with so many top groups and after the 90's started going down hill. It was music then.
Have to agree with previous posts that they sound different. Not the same but that is what age does to everyone! Still an all time great and I gave it a thumbs up.
Robin can still hit the notes...just like when we saw them in the late 80's and early 90's...remember the Randy Men at a bar in Glenview, Ill...1986-7 ...with Jerry, Marylyn, Debbie...Cindy Gotshall...Jerry was cutting the Bass Players hair at that time...
The man of 1,000 voices! Cheap Trick is still great! After all these years!
Beautiful song..We all grow old but this man sings still sings from his soul..
From their performance at Daytona in 1988 to now and they still sound amazing. Love the song, love the band, just love the sound of 80's tunes. Cheers!!
Livin' The Dream this performance doesnt come anywhere near the daytona track

Another night
slowly closes in and I feel so lonely
Touching heat freezing on my skin I pretend you still hold me
I'm going crazy I'm losing sleep I'm in too far
I'm in way too deep over you
I can't believe you're gone You were the first You'll be the last
Wherever you go I'll be with you
Whatever you want I'll give it to you
Whenever you need someone To lay your heart and head upon
Remember after the fire After all the rain
I will be the flame I will be the flame
Watching shadows move across the wall Feels so fright'ning
I wanna run to you I wanna call But I've been hit by lightning
Just can't stand up for falling apart
Can't see through this veil across my heart over you
You'll always be the one You were the first You'll be the last
I'm going crazy I'm losing sleep I'm in way too deep over you
You'll always be the one You were the first You'll be the last
Izabel Baker: This song is one of the best 'power' ballads of all time. The lyrics are so moving and I could cry every time I hear it.
