  • Last week saw the release of two new noise and reverb reduction tools. VoicEx is a premium plugin from Cedar Audio. Listen to how it compares to Supertone's Clear (formerly called Goyo) and dxRevive for noise and reverb reduction. I also provide my thoughts after using all three for the last week. It truly is, but the price makes it a tough sell to anyone who isn't using it on big budget projects.

[AN ADDITIONAL WAY]: If your recording setup is able, try placing the C-SUITE C-VOX NOISE & AMBIENCE REDUCTION plugin from UAD (which is also a noise suppression technology designed by CEDAR) at the beginning of your live recordings and then try to utilize the CEDAR AUDIO VOICEX plugin in "post" to clean-up any remaining noise.
NOTE: This may be a cheaper way to get high quality noise reduction by utilizing CEDAR technology and without using the more expensive CEDAR AUDIO STUDIO COMPLETE bundle.

Luckily, I've been able to eliminate the system noise in my chain since I prefer to record without noise reduction so I have the cleanest audio to work with in post. C-Vox is really good for removing the system's noise floor, but struggles when it comes to other types of noise. That's where VoicEx really shines. As of now, I've had higher priorities, but I'll probably pick up the plugin sometime next year.

I have dxRevive Pro and very satisfied. The black friday deal was decent

Both versions of dxRevive are solid. While it's not my go-to choice, I find it excels in situations where I have harsh sounding audio with some noise and reverb that would take too long to try to EQ.

@@jesse.mccune I thought I'd mention as you can leave the studio style processing and just use the denoising. I'm currently mixing a film and it's been great

@@jesse.mccune I actually find applying dxRevive Pro and then EQing the topend get's most of the shape back, while eliminating harsh tones. I've even used it as a band specific de-ess, powerful tool

Hello there! Thanks for the video, it was interesting to see the capabilities of these audio plugins. Could you recommend a VST plugin that doesn't overly alter breath sounds in audio, avoiding that sharp, robotic, and unpleasant quality? I use two USB microphones-one is a standard microphone, and the other is a headset with a microphone. I primarily commentate on sports events, and the headset is more comfortable for extended use. Unfortunately, headsets typically lack the audio quality of studio microphones.
I'm dealing with two distinct issues: background noise and a persistent hum. When I tackle the noise problem, things generally sound acceptable. However, when attempting to eliminate the hum (which I suspect may be caused by my PC or electrical interference), the audio quality takes a significant hit. It becomes excessively dry, and breath sounds become sharp and unnatural.
I've tried using RX in the past, but it appeared to degrade my audio quality significantly. Are there any denoising and dehumming tools you'd recommend that effectively remove unwanted noise and hum without compromising audio integrity?

    • @jesse.mccune
      @jesse.mccune  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This is a big question. I would start by first trying to find the source of the noise and would suspect the headset first. Most USB headsets are low quality and noisy. A boom arm might help you better position your standard mic. The best noise reduction is to reduce it before recording.
Noise reduction is an art, but is best used in small doses. The more heavily we use noise reduction, the more damage it does. It's not uncommon to strip away the noise and reverb only to find other nasties hiding underneath. I've worked with a number of USB headsets that generally sound like you describe with breaths, so the mic could be part of the problem here.
I've been really impressed with Supertone's Goyo plugin. It's free right now and worth trying out. It's one of the two most transparent plugins on the market right now, along with VoicEx.
RX should be able to handle both of those fairly well, though. If it degrades the audio quality, I would think it might be a settings issue more than anything else. Are you using presets or setting the modules up manually? In my experience, most of the presets can be heavy handed. In case you haven't seen it, here's a video showing how I use Spectral De-noise for noise reduction. th-cam.com/video/ycpZlvm0v6Y/w-d-xo.html
If you're fighting extreme noise and using aggressive settings with noise reduction, you could try doing two passes with gentler settings. Sometimes that can provide better results. Sometimes it can create more artifacts, so try it and see.

Thanks for the advice! I've tried Goyo, it sounds really nice, but the big issue here - it's much slower than most of the other noise reduction plugins when I render them. I'm definitely going to watch your video on RX's spectral de-noise and will try using the two-pass technique! Apparently, there are not only de-noise VSTs, but also de-humming ones. I guess I should also try eliminating the hum using the de-humming plugin instead of de-noising.
As for environment (making it as silent as possible) there's two issues: the first one is my old PC is still pretty loud, but if I somehow fix this issue, there comes the other one with hum from usb-connection itself, it seems. So whatever I do to make my room quiet, there is a usb-hum which always exsits. I know that the best solution is to buy high-quality devices, but currently they're not afforable for me. So I'm working with what is. By the way, maybe you know some high-quality headset with mic? So far, judging by the tests (no matter what price is), they are all worse than even a standard USB studio mic.

Newer noise reduction plugins require more processing power and that will impact render times. Is there a reason the render time is so important? I feel an increase in render time is worth the cost for better noise reduction. There are many ways to fight noise. RX has a number of options, but I find myself sticking to Spectral De-noise when dealing with steady state noises like hums, hiss, and general noise floor issues.
If the USB cable is the source of hum, you could try routing the cable so it's not crossing any power supplying cables. If it has to cross one, do so at 90 degrees. Ferrites can also help if you have one available or can get one.
So far, the only headset I've heard that provides good quality audio are the Audio Technica ATH-M50xSTS and Audio Technica BPHS1, but neither are cheap. I would recommend sticking with the USB mic that you have, especially if it's a dynamic mic, given the noise issues you're currently contending with.

A lot of that will depend on what needs to be done. RX would probably be my choice for any restoration. Is there something RX isn’t providing you with? I might try Clear for noise reduction first and see how it goes. Same with VoicEx if you have it.

Wow, you really buried the lede on this one! That is one expensive plugin. It does do its job of noise reduction very well, also de-reverb. If I could afford it I would add it to my toolbox, but I'm going to have to get along without it. Also, this company seems to be very industry oriented, not retail oriented at all.
I'm not sure how you use Rx, but you say this plugin does just about everything Rx does. In a bunch of projects over just the last few days I have used Rx to do about 400 things this little one-trick-pony black box does not do. Just sayin.
This is a very sophisticated tool and it performs its narrow range of duties quite well, but unfortunately this company is aimed at high end industrial users, broadcast studios, forensic labs, etc., and their pricing shows it. Not too relevant on our level. Which is not to say I don't want it!

I'm looking at this from the perspective of a podcast editor; RX has its place for people doing other types of audio work. I see the essential tools for cleaning up podcast audio to be: noise reduction, reverb reduction, plosive control, and mouth noise reduction. I'll handle the last two with the plugins. The only thing I'm doing in the editor these days is spectral de-noising. If I can get out of destructive editing completely, it will save enough time to break even in under a year.
I think a big part of this conversation is whether this is a business or personal expense. That difference is huge. When it's a personal expense, we look at it from the perspective of "how many episodes do I have to edit to pay for this?". While a business will look at it as "how much time will this save me?". Personally, any tool that can save me an hour or two a week gets a hard look.
Now the question is, how much bad audio do I get where this will outperform Voice Enhance (aka Goyo)? This probably is one I pass on for now, but would have no problem purchasing in the future when I get a piece of audio that warrants it. Similar to upgrades. I don't upgrade to the latest version of RX or any other software until there is a reason to. And I feel I may have upgraded RX for the last time.

FYI .. No IOS for DVR 18.6 users. This plugin like most, only works in OS / Windows. Pointless for future editors on Ipad 12.9 M2. Get with the program & give us IOS versions.

I understand the frustration, but these tools are available as VST and Audio Units. The issue isn't with the developers of the plugins but with the developers responsible for the VST and AU SDKs. Since they are plugins, they need a host, but until the SDKs get ported, they won't be available on iOS.

I agree that it's an expensive plugin. The cost to value ratio will look different to someone using this in a side hustle than it would someone using it every day for work. Most of us won't be able to justify the cost.
