  • *UPDATED VERSION* Last week I spent a few days learning about the new VW Atlas 3 row SUV. There is some new cool stuff, and some stuff I don't love. I will be doing a drive event soon, and will post another video.

    Also I forgot to mention that towing limit is 5000 lb if it comes with a hitch pack from the factory, and 2000 lb if one is added.

    Thank you all for the support and help with this video. I was required by VW to remove a part about warranty. It seems that was not public knowledge. Sorry for any issues that is caused you guys, but I think it's important that you know why it was edited.

      I was gonna ask why. I clicked my non-refreshed link and was greeted by a "video does not exist" message of some sort. The anxiety! But thanks for clarifying, I feel all better now. Especially since I don't own a VW vehicle, so I couldn't care less about secret warranty stuff (ooOOOOoooh! Secret!). :D

    We bought one. New 2018 V6 SE 4motion. IMO, boxy is the correct shape for an SUV. It looks pretty mean in black. I'm a big VW and Audi fan and have no complaints besides I don't like the auto stop/start feature, we turn it off every time we get in. My wife loves the vehicle! I picked up a Golf Sportwagen S 4motion at the same time. Traded in an old hatchback A3 on it. Looking forward to doing some tuning and upgrades on the wagon! First up: lowering, rear sway bar, and some 18x8.5 Pro Race wheels. Cheers, love your channel!

    Great vidya, I was not even aware of this VW until starting this video so thanks for the clue! I was nodding in agreement with your comment on the styling, it didn't strike me as looking like a VW in the video but I will reserve final judgement until I see it in person on a sunny day.

    Great video! I just looked at one at local dealership and love it. Simple and clean design with very usable space and it doesn't look minivan-like. Do you know if VW has changed it's suppliers for sensors and other small electrical components that often fail on their cars?

      Thank you! I am excited they are finally out. I may actually be driving one for the weekend. :)
      I don't know about the sensors. I doubt they have switched. Most of the car looks to be older technology, other than the radio.

    LOVE IT! Great video! been watching the review videos for a while and finally get to see an opinion that matters. I'll likely be trading my b7 in for one of these in a few years. The things you like the most are the things i dont really like. The digital dash is cool but old school gages would be reliable. The radio is also to high-tech. Bring back reliable buttons. I realy like the looks and the interiors is top notch. And yes the r1234 is too expensive.

    Really cool of VW corporate to allow you to video the car. Maybe they could allow you tape one of these sessions.
    Do does the rear have independent red or orange/amber turn signals or are they somewhat integrated into the brake and or tail lights?
    The eco start/stop, is it defeatable?
    What about a HUD?
    I agree it looks like a Ford Explorer. But that is not a bad thing.
    I am looking forward to it. Might be my next car.
    Last question: Where will it be made?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Syracuse it's made in TN, just like the Passat.
      No option for HUD at this time. Oddly enough no option for rear entertainment either.
      Not sure on the turn signals. I'll check later this week at the drive event.
      The start:stop can be turned off, but it comes back on with a key cycle. It's default position is on.
      VW didn't really let me do it. I just did it because I knew a ton of you guys were interested in it. VW and I don't collaborate on anything. :(

    @Charles I own 2019 Atlas Se with Tech which has adaptive cruise control, lane assist…..I need to do alignment and wheel balance. VW dealer gave me a quote which seemed very expensive especially at this time. Their reason only they have the correct VW tools to do correct alignment and wheel balance which will calibrate sensors and camera. Others shops like Firestones may be cheaper but don’t have tools which will mess my alignment & wheel balance. What is your recommendation? Will my sensors and camera calibration get affected if I do from Firestone?

    Good video, would have loved to hear more about towing, it is a pretty big vehicle to be restricted to only 2,000 if you add a hitch. Just what do they do at the factory for the 5,000 hitch that can not be done at the dealer level. I heard it was chassis bracing, is there no way to retrofit.

    Great video presentation. Was looking for an answer to this question: Last evening I test drove the Atlas SEL Premium 4Motion and despite the underwhelming powerplant, I was quite impressed with the Atlas. One thing that will be a deal breaker for me however, is the inability to make the infotainment screen bright enough to see at night without glasses. My 8 year old Dodge Durango has nearly twice the brightness. The VW salesperson put the brightness adjustment to its highest level and still couldn't make it bright enough to see easily.
    QUESTION: IS THERE A WAY TO MAKE THE INFOTAINMENT SCREEN BRIGHTER THAN THE MAXIMUM SPEC ON THE UNIT ITSELF FOR NIGHT TIME DRIVING?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. It’s probably limited on purpose. For me I actually go the opposite way. I have all the interior lighting as dim as possible and it’s still too bright. Lol

    My only honest concern is the fuel economy; the Highlander & Pilot with their 3.5L V6 engines in AWD trims gets equal if not better power than the Atlas but both SUVs get 20MPG+ in the city & high 20s in the highway. The Atlas due to its heft & likely the age of the dating 3.6L VR6 only gets 17 city & 23 highway which makes it quite thirsty. The best solution & cheapest is obviously the 3.0L TDI, but we all know that's a pipe dream at this point. Currently no VW engines in VWoA stables can do the job better, which makes me believe the 3.6L VR6 is merely a placeholder engine for the 4motion models at this time of launch.
    So my next question will be, how long until VW will change out the 3.6L VR6 for the newer & more efficient engine for the Atlas. I think the likely candidate would be the 3.0L V6 turbo found on certain Porsche & Audi MY2018 cars.

    I'm a big VW fan and have a '13 TDI Passat. After we do the buy back we are moving to an SUV. The Atlas would normally be a perfect fit with a TDI engine. Without the TDI it's nothing special to me. I bought VW's because the TDI made them special. The loss of the TDI nearly kills the brand for me.

    • @DeniJasmina
      @DeniJasmina 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great. Good luck finding a diesel midsize SUV at your local Toyota, Mazda, Infiniti, Nissan, Ford, Subaru, Chevrolet, Honda, Kia and Hyundai dealerships. Best of luck buddy!

    • @Banshee365
      @Banshee365 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's not get all butt-hurt here... Jeep has a midsize diesel. But FCA is probably the worst car manufacturer on the planet. I'll also include that I much loved the DSG. We have had several VW's in the past and are very brand loyal but have had nothing but trouble from the 09G transmission. The Atlas has too much competition that does gasoline powertrains better than they do. That's the problem the Atlas will have compared to if it had a TDI option. If the TDI were available the Atlas would be killer. We are planning to move to a full-size SUV probably so I would only go down to a mid-size Atlas if it had a TDI. And Mazda and Ford are bringing diesel's to their vehicles while VW is closing the door on their diesel history. Shame shame shame...

    the cheapy plastic pieces your are talking about the easy to get scratch , well Ford explore has this cheapy plastic all over their cars even the roof rails are kind of loose and cheapy too, and looks like americans care less about those things because Ford is beng selling their cars and explorer always and a lot of them, just when have a chance touch any Ford car that has roof rails, see what I am talking about, , escape, explorer, edge, flex

    Really disappointed with the transmission choice by VW. Why stick with a transmission that's known to have major issues when you have the DSG at your disposal is just mindboggling to me. I guess it all comes down to build cost, but surely VWs for the German and European market can't be that much more expensive to build - just look at Skoda.

    • @f181234
      @f181234 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Triffy DSG is more unreliable than the automatic and Americans don't like the way the DSG feels they've complained about it in the past.

    • @rckata
      @rckata 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any observations on the DSG, but my experience with the 09G hasn't been good. Even with a brand new valve body and reprogrammed shifts it still slams shifts randomly. When it inevitably dies in my Jetta I'll just bite the bullet and do a manual swap

      You're damn right about that. I took my Passat into the dealership for it's 40k service and made the mistake of assuming they would do everything required for the 40k service. Apparently they didn't realize I had a DSG and didn't service it. At 60k, I had to get a new clutch. Needless to say, I filed a complaint with VW and was reimbursed half of the cost for the transmission rebuild. I haven't been to that dealership since.

      The only reason VW will pay more money out on warranty here is.... well 2 reasons

    The way I see it, most repair shops have at least three years to get new equipment for the A/C since VW covers maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles. Same applies to the warranty so customers would be taking their vehicle to the dealership for the first 3 years anyways and they are expected to have the newest equipment.

    The VW comments about restricting options to streamline production is total BS. The US market is treated much different than the rest of the world by most manufacturers. We have big dealers with immense inventories and as a consequence the manufacturers attempt to sell out of inventory plus those vehicles are considered "sold". By restricting options most customers can be served by their dealer or one nearby. In the rest of the world dealers have a few models with varied options so the customer can see what is available. They don't have the room to keep much inventory. Once the order is defined the vehicle will be built to the customer's wishes. If you get a chance to visit a car plant you will most likely hear the managers boast about the flexibility of their production facilities and how it works efficiently no matter what the production mix is. A couple of years ago I was in Hiroshima at the Mazda factory. I saw Mazda 3's (FWD) being assembled on the same line as the Miata (RWD). In fact I watched the same worker install the Miata convertible top followed by a dash install in a Mazda3. The only exception to this American charade is Porsche whose build offerings are much the same the world over. For Audi the US market Is larger than the U.K. however the brits get a far larger choice of powertrain components and options even though their steering wheels are on the wrong side. Mercedes is in on this charade also. Mercedes SUV's are largely built in the US for market the world over. Americans are offered a constipated selection of models and options despite their birthplace. If you visit the U.K. or German websites and you find that a panoply of options are available on SUV's made in Alabama that are denied to Americans. I'm sure those who who espoused the restricted option drivel were ignorant of the facts and were merely passing down the party line.
    I do hope the Atlas is a success however in the past VW has found little joy in building "American" models. The other German nameplates don't try to make cheaper models for the US in fact Americans are far more likely to order sunroofs and leather than other markets. I was once told that for Germans being transferred to the US was seen as a demotion and as a consequence the best talent rarely crossed the pond. This might explain prior debacles like the Rabbit.

I can't use the cruise without ACC...my wife constantly complains to me about this (it snows up in the N.E.) and we can't just have plain "dumb" cruise. • @HumbleMechanic

      Leaks are always a concern for me on ALL VWs with a sunroof. Its the main reason I am happy my R has no sunroof. Otherwise They have been pretty good. first year run had more issues, but most of those have been worked out by now.
      On the ACC, nope, you are stuck with the full boat thing. Now there may be ways to fine tune it better to your liking, but I advise against coding and adaptation changes to that system. There are always unknown side effects. You might be able to run some of the system off, but I think it reboots to full on with a key cycle

How have the later gen VR6 Tourags been as far as reliability? We are debating on that or a Tiguan, Tiguan maybe too small not sure yet. Always loved Tourags but heard nightmares from dealer friends many years ago..Are the later models pretty reliable? Our '12 passat has been rock solid for its first 5 years and 100k miles, How are the Tourags as a used car say like a 2015 w/30-40k miles?
