THIS IS FREAKING PERFECT. I was looking for this video on YNAB forever. Thank you for making it so simple and direct. Also, thank you for taking the time to record this and upload. Cheers!
This is the best explanation of credit cards in YNAB that I have seen. Thank you!! I wish I had seen this before I completely messed up my budget by trying to figure out what I had done incorrectly. Everything I tried to do to fix it just made it worse. I wound up doing a budget reset and started over again. I think I finally understand how to do a credit card transaction and payment now that I watched this video.
Thank you! I was really struggling trying to figure this out, and other videos were super fast so I couldn't see what they were doing. I'm a visual learner and this was perfect.
Thanks so much! I just joined YNAB 4 days ago, and pay off my cards every month. However, because I started on July 1, and many of my cards are in the middle of their billing cycle, they have balances currently. I couldn't figure out why I was having trouble. This video clarified everything. Super helpful!
Thank you! This was incredibly helpful. YNAB should incorporate this video into their app. I’m generally tech savvy but was not able to understand this workflow until watching your video.
Thank you. Super helpful and answered questions I couldn’t figure out regarding the balancing of the card. Credit cards are tricky because they are often due mid month, and one carries forward the charges even though you can pay off the statement balance in full. Your comments regarding the budget side solved 5e mystery for me.
Thanks. This solved the one problem I was having: I needed to change the Payee to Transfer, not the Category. Now my credit cards should work correctly.
Thanks! Please consider making more tutorials on YNAB. Sometimes it's kinda difficult to understand, but you covered pretty much everything with real scenarios and that was very helpful! Well done, and thanks again.
Great video! I migrated from YNAB 4 and couldn't figure out how to deal with the mid-cycle credit card balances when I pay them off every month. This made it so clear. Thanks!
excellent video. nice job explaining how it works. been doing this since January. this is one of the more difficult aspects of YNAB. but in the end, it really does make sense.
Thank you. Very clear and informative presentation. I coudn't figure out how to create a Credit Card Payments category in my budget and was wondering how the CC balance updated automatically in your presentation. Perhaps you could include the step of informing Ynab that CC will be paid in full and checking that option accordingly when creating the CC account.

Finally!!! Why was this so confusing??!! I’ve been using YNAB4 forever, and I love it. But, I’m worried that I’m going to lose it with a few more IOS upgrades. I had an ending balance of $4,246 on my credit card. I’m starting from scratch, and I knew I had paid that amount in full from my checking in January, which is where I want to start, at the beginning of the year. I won’t even try to explain the things I did to try to get my card to the correct starting balance. After watching your video, I finally realized I needed to put that $4,246 in the beginning budget for my credit card. THEN I transferred that same amount from checking and paid it off, just like I did in “real life.” Whew!

What do you do when you want to set a budget for debt repayment and then are lucky enough to have extra to pay off more. My YNAB now says I've overspent on paying off this debt, but I really haven't.
Thank you for doing this video, it's very helpful. One question - if you only pay the statement balance, and not the full balance, do you then have to change the original Budgeted amount? Or will the difference be accounted for in the amount that carries over into the next month in the Available category just like your gas purchase after you paid off your card? Thank you for the help!

I’m just struggling with getting CC everything looks good budget and payed off CC but I have a positive balance CC and the amount says to budget. I’ve tried contacting YNAB but still confused 🤷♀️
I pay my CC statement in full every month but my "Available" amount is not the same as the number on the left under my budget accounts. It's always off like 10% or so. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for the video. I follow my YNAB with yours closely and seems that we both have the total inflows, which equals to total budgeted, higher than total available at 9:51. How can one budget more than what's available? Please helpl.
Total Budgeted is the full amount that we put into our categories at the start of the month which just so happens to be total inflow because we just started using YNAB. Don't let this confuse you. Looking at the right pane at 9:51 you see Total Budgeted and below that is Total Activity and below that is Total available. Where these numbers come from is that we budgeted $17k at the start of the month or the start of using YNAB, we spent $1,424.56 in Activity and we have $15,575.44 leftover. (17,000 - 1,424.56 = 15,575.44) The Total Available is all your money that has not been spent. That month you only spent $1,424.56 which leaves you with the $15,575.44. Next month, if you get a paycheck of $3k and budget it then you will have the Total Budgeted of $3k. And the Total Available will be higher then Budgeted because how much you have is not the same as how much you budget with the incoming money for that month. It will start to make more sense the more you start using the software in the coming months.
Thank you for your thorough explanation! I think I got the hang of it and understand that total inflows is really the beginning balance and any additional earnings for income as the month progresses.

Would love to see a video from you (because you are good at explaining) on just the opposite of "Paying In Full".

It’s Publix not Public’s
So what do you do with the payment when it comes through on your credit card. Where do you assign that to?
why would you not include the pending charges?
Thank you! That was very helpful.

It really bothers me that you spelled publix that way
I lost a little respect for the demonstrator because of this.
