This song is mainstream pop, this one and From the flagstones, had they been on Polydor like Siouxsie, these would have been top 20 hits.

Too know the Cocteaux' is to love them, even more .....!!!! (Thanks K.K.)
After 40+ years of super-fandom, I've been extremely fortunate to own the Cocteau Twins movie script, I edited for the bands close friend Leesa Beals (a.k.a. mmmender), who had heard every detail of their most inner thoughts and experiences, then wrote them down. Leesa was responsible for making the Cocteaux' first website, organized the yearly "CocteauFest", created their first "Cocteau Twins Forum" where the band members would show-up and speak, and she even acted as their impromptu secretary. Elizabeth had spoken about the abuse she suffered from, as a child, then spoke of the "real reasons' " for Elizabeth's singing was the result of a psychological trauma, something later she explained in a magazine article after the Four Calendar Café album was released. She calls it her "descriptive disorder", but basically she has given the entire story hidden in plain sight, if you can understand the lyrics. I've listened to them for so long, that I can hear Elizabeth's vocals as clearly as your all reading this, but it took a while.
Leesa was a wonderful person, whom we lost due to cancer. The members of original "Cocteau Forum" decided to decipher all the lyrics of the Cocteau Twins songs, but this was back in the early 90's when the internet was still figuring itself out, but all 37 forum members listened and wrote out the lyrics through email. We all had jobs and a life to live, so it took us years to build and assemble each line of text, but people always think it would have been easier to simply ask Elizabeth herself for the lyrics; however, to do so was a big, big "No-No" since Elizabeth has never revealed her lyrics, preferring everyone to use their own lyrics. For herself to reveal the lyrics, was to expose herself in an intimate way, even more than any biography could do, and for Elizabeth she arranged her lyrics to express her personal catharsis. Singing her thoughts gave herself the sense of relief from pent-up frustration and anxiety. Robin and Simon both admit they still have their own personal take on the wording of different songs, but I'm not immune to this affect either. I may know the real lyrics, but I too have my own wording as well.
Just for all the hater's out there, we decided to take the real lyrics and vowed to never release them out to the public, because we worked extremely hard and the public only wants instant gratification. The Cocteau Twins are a puzzle-box, as well as a music-box enshrouded with veils of mystic and secrets untold. Elizabeth definitely does go through the all the uploads, remakes, mixes, and tribute videos as a little peek into "ourselves". She likes to read the comments, so please refrain from the temptation to insult other people with snye, sarcastic, and sardonic remarks. Real Cocteau Twins fans don't try to hurt each other, plus it upsets Elizabeth.
The truth behind "Sugar Hiccup" is Elizabeth was taking care of a friends baby for the day, so this was a day of celebration having a trip to the park and buy a balloon and tied to the babys wrist, but a day to discover the mysteries of these moments. Elizabeth notices all the little things we ordinarily dismiss, like when a baby first begins to eat solid food, it's almost always Cheerios on the high-chair top. They also have poor balance, so the they'll "tumble" and "fall", but their breath is still so new and sweet. People have no idea that this little ballad wasn't initially for Lucy Bell Guthrie Fraser, but this song definitely became "the song" for her to sing to Lucy, almost five years later, after "Sugar Hiccup(s)" initial release. This song became that motherly seed, planted deeply within her soul and, if, a woman who can create songs about a spider's-web, with "Pearly Dewdrops Drop" also detailing the simmering colors in those same dewdrops exploding a universal explosion in the "Spangled Maker" ― Then writing a lullaby is nothing, but pure elation's bliss.
Hannah Peel has recreated "Sugar Hiccup" and I don't mind it, as long as people somehow transform the music, with their own spin. Peel accomplishes this beautifully, and she gives an even more delicate and more fragile distinction to "Sugar Hiccup" than what was originally delivered by Elizabeth. It's been a while since Robin released another Cocteau Twins tribute album, but I've submitted a much cleaner version of this song to Simon (linked below, if "GTG5570" doesn't mind it....?). When other's attempt to copy Elizabeth Fraser - Verbatim - Then that's not a tribute; but rather, a very poor copy and nobody has, or, ever will accomplish that feat.
Peel's version offers the listener a particular music-box charm, people normally associate with “Sugar Hiccup”, even if, the original doesn't feature that particular stylistic measure ― It's perfectly set-up for this particular waxing. Adding the bass-cello and string accompaniment's is a brilliant idea and I've heard live symphonic versions of Cocteau Twins songs and they translate with absolute beauty. Watching Hannah I'm curious about the punch-card instrument used to achieve the music-box effect. As always is the case with Cocteau Twins fan's, there remains a contention over the lyrics themselves. While Hannah addresses this headline issue with gusto and a clear decision between a phrasing “Sugar Hiccup on Cheerio's” and her friends interpretation of “Sugar Hiccup on She Reels”: I can confidently assure Hannah and others, they are both indeed correct, however there is absolutely no sexual connotation involved.
People need to remember that Elizabeth Fraser views 'words', vastly different than the rest of the population. Too Elizabeth, a 'words' power is not in the literal definition themselves, but in her ability to perform vocal origami, which is unparalleled and under many circumstances she's agonized over the correct usage and pronunciation; primarily, due to her ability to add compound meaning.
It is annoying there is so much background noise, which is why I'm not big on live performances by anyone, because Hyperacusis is problem I must to live with, but I do hear everything. Aside from my own practice, I'll do music reviews and sometimes guide or give advice to Audio Engineers who might have difficulty in isolating sound issues on recordings. Please, don't undersell this song Hannah's accomplished here, because it takes real guts to sing infront of people, muchless take other people's unnecessarily hurtful jabs and snye remarks.
If people don't like a particular TV channel, do you insult and throw rocks at your TV - Or - Do you simply switch the channel .....???
Because of Leesa Beals passing, Elizabeth withdrew her permissions to create a movie. She had implicit trust in Leesa to honor and develop the storyline without creating debate or misleading people into believing everything in their career was about clouds and butterflies, which was very far from the truth. I offered to give back the edited script, but Robin said "Just keep it, but never reveal it to the public" and I'd never do anything to hurt or upset any of the members to my favorite band. They've all been apart of my life and Elizabeth's difficulty with Psychogenic Dysphonia, had caused myself to study Psychology and eventually become a Physician in Psychiatric Medicine. I've dedicated my life to helping "at-risk" and potentially "suicidal" teens, using a form of music therapy.
I've been offered thousands for some of the rarest Cocteau Twins memorabilia, but it's not for sale and the mentioned movie script is locked away in a bank vault; however, a I am allowed to give out some little stories and anecdotal testaments for the curious fan, regarding the origins of particular songs that are spread out all over TH-cam. How Elizabeth thinks is a mystery unto itself, but it's the reason why Kan Mikami declared her voice as, "The Voice of God". We are all the voice of God, but all to often we abuse our power.
I'm very glad, if, you have read this two page read, but if you did, then many congratulations' ― Your a true blue Cocteau Twins fan ......!!!!
A huge thank you to "GTG5570" for hosting this live performance on TH-cam, it's very inviting and always a pleasure to hear other musicians' create and develop new music, instead of simply trying to copying the original. As promised a link to the clean version of "Sugar Hiccup"

Wow... I was so prepared to absolutely detest this before I'd even heard it... but it was utterly enchanting, performed by artists who obviously love the original as much as anyone, and brave enough to do their own version. I absolutely loved it! I can't imagine what it took to punch all those holes in the paper strip! And you can actually sing! Thank you for doing this! That's a 24 carat, weapons grade 'Like' from a lifelong Cocteaus fan!
BTW... for the handful of small minded dislikers... go away. You obviously haven't understood this, or the Cocteau Twins, and therefore your opinion is worthless and invalid.

Cocteau Twins fanatics are notoriously difficult to please; but, after 40+ years of superfandom, I've witnessed it all and from almost every perspective. First of all, Elizabeth is all too often honored by the different tributes other musicians make, but she definitely does review these video's and "Sugar Hiccup" is definitely one of her favorite songs, that she wrote for some very special reasons. Nevertheless, the Cocteau Twins have an audience that doesn't appreciate to give, muchless enjoy snye sarcastic comments and retorts.
Elizabeth is a very sensitive person, who respects everyone's opinion. It's bad behavior, but just remember that Elizabeth does read these comments, so don't say anything you'd actually regret to say in front of herself. Thanks
