A big part of what drew me to the Atelier series in the first place was the cover art; each game looked like a watercolor painting. The graphics may be a little dated now, but the games still deliver that sense of beauty and wonder every time you play. The characters are likeable, the alchemy adds depth, the combat system is fun, and the gameplay is solid. You really can't go wrong with these games. (Except for Nelke...)
Thank you for making so much content about these games; you're right when you say they are underrated... for some reason, they have just never gotten the attention they should have. But you really do a wonderful job of covering the series, and I'm sure there are a lot of viewers out there who will discover (and come to love) these games, and the series as a whole, thanks largely to your work.

This Atelier trilogy is actually pretty good. Soundtrack especially for Shallie is really good, animation sequences are awesome, character designs some of the best in all the Atelier games. You're missing out if you pick other Atelier titles over the Dusk trilogy tbh

Thanks for the reviews of the underrated Atelier games. I remember seeing these games on PS3 in GameStop like 12 years ago and thinking “WTF are these games?” And passed them over. Thanks to your review I played Escha and Logy and Shallie and got hooked. Such a fun gameplay loop and so relaxing and pleasant. Anyone who likes turn based RPGs should play these.

Escha and Logy is my favorite Atelier game overall. Just love the characters, the music is outstanding (the only Atelier soundtrack I actually imported from Japan), and I love the combat system (its two-tier system once your party grow is something I really missed in Atelier Ryza).

I was curious on what the western community think about atelier games, In fact i'm sorta worried too since i saw the majority of people there prefer to enjoy things like Disney/Marvel stuff with masculine heroism. But I'm glad you love them and even mention the depth of the story! I recommended these games to my friend and she told me that this game is a great way to teach life value to children especially girls. Despite being overall pretty and feminine games, they are also heroic and still teaching the value of hard work, the value of being understanding to each other, the value of true strength and also telling them to not take things for granted, overall a good message which have recently becoming lost these days due to media with agendas.
Thank you so much for the great review, Ircha! I hope to see more of your reviews!

I generally dislike most JRPGs but every once in a while, I give it a shot. Which is the reason why I discover Persona and Fire Emblem. Now because of you, I try out Ryza and it just goes up there as the very few JRPGs that I really like. Like holy shit, it’s so addictive. First one I played was back in PS2 (Iris I believe) but didn’t touch it again since. I never imagined I’d come back to it and completely fall in love. On the outside it just doesn’t look like something for me at all. But the game is solid fun time. I can’t wait to try out other ones. And of course, there’s Ryza 2 coming up soon looking real good.

So i chose Ayesha to start with n it’s hard to find guides for it. for the first playthrough i realised i will probably run out of time n will enjoy the 2nd time better. 🤷‍♀️ it is what it is. Fun game tho. The story is really not deep i think but the scenes w Keith are funny 😅
Update: i have now played the game twice, 2nd time successfully saved sister. I do think there is not enough time. We should be able to select to continue playing so people could collect achievements, clear maps. I found secret bosses too that I don’t have time to get strong to defeat. It would be GREAT if it didn’t just end after 3 years.

It's great that more and more of the "older" Atelier games are being released for the switch. I've really enjoyed these games and hope that they will get more attention by now.
Even though I really like your review I have to disagree with your comment that the synthesize system in Ayesha is "really easy". For me it was one of the hardest system in all of the Atelier games I have played. Even after finishing the game I was unsure whether I understood it thoroughly. While basic knowledge is definitely sufficient to finish the game, for the later optional boss battles (after the main plot) a good knowledge of the synthesize system will definitely help.

The dusk trilogy is also with the Surge Concerto series the last games that Gust developed before being bought by Koei Tecmo. The recent Atelier games are very good games but I find that they lack the risk-taking that they took before the buyout you just have to see they constantly cling to Atelier Ryza like a dog gnawing her bone
I sincerely hope that the next non-gacha Atelier game is of great Gust

I discovered Ayesha fairly recently after it came out and I loved it so much it is still my favorite out of the whole series. After i finised it i went back and got Meruru and I loved it too si got all of the Arland series and every game since. Ayesha is still my favorite closely followed by Meruru and Lulua. Although after Escha and Logy I haven't really been liking the changes to the mechanics , like how the side character stories work and the fixed party members (i guess you can still select who you bring into battle but i feel like theres's too many all at once and I don't like all of them) So I guess I'm a bit of a nostalgic player who appreciates the good ol' days.

One silly question about DLC's, you start the game with them or you need to unlock through the game?

    • @ircha

To be honest I haven't paid much attention to the DLC outfits since I'm using the original outfits. But I think they're all there from the start, not sure though.

Just found out about your channel while trying to decide which should be my first Atelier game. (Here's a sub!)
Known about the Atelier series for a few years now (because of the Atelier: Escha and Logy anime) and i have been sort of interested in it ever since and now that the Dusk trilogy has released i had to decide which of these two (Ryza or Escha & Logy) was a better starting point.
I decided on *Atelier: Escha and Logy* but watching this video made me really interested in *Atelier: Shallie* so I plan on playing that aswell, and while i'm at it i might as well play *Atelier: Ayesha* between those two to complete the Trilogy!
Now i'll just have to keep my eye out for a sale on the Trilogy and decide between PC or Switch...

Whenever you review an Atelier game, I think you need to always mention the time limit aspect. It is difficult to remember which games have a hard time limit (you have to complete the game or pass an alchemy test within certain in-game days/years) and which are more relaxed (later ones don't even have any time limit, though there is still a calendar). I feel the time limit is an important factor to many players when picking up an Atelier game.
