I've referenced this video often in the Faulkner book club group I'm in. A major part of the lecture's value is that it's literally the only Hamblin lecture I can find online! It's also valuable for Hamblin's overall summary of AILD, and for Prof. Lowe's explication of the Bundren family's journey to that of the Exodus of the Israelites in the Biblical Old Testament. I had *never* thought to compare the two, but he is absolutely correct! Later in the video, Hamblin builds upon Lowe's discussion of Biblical allusions in AILD by reminding listeners that the fish is a New Testament symbol for Christ. That adds a wholly different layer to interpreting Vardaman's "my mother is a fish", doesn't it?!
Another historical precedent for the journey of Addie Bundren's corpse could be the funeral cortege, by train from Washington to Springfield, with many stops along the way, of the body of Abraham Lincoln.
David Randall talks too damned much. You are scholars, oh yeah. Quit the niceties and fussiness and get on with opening so great a fount of wisdom upon the world of literature. I noted you had only eleven comments after posting this video two years ago. This makes perfect sense to me.
Love Faulkner so much, I really relate. My mother was also a horse :)
These gentlemen are inspiring in all they know! Insightful analyses! Thank you
Well, I missed this live, after all..I’m glad it is on TH-cam at least!

Loved listening to this. Thank you!
I first learned of "as I lay dying" by reading Harold Bloom. One of the great modernist novels.

Is David Randall the voice on CSPAN?
