Wow I’ve been using LingQ for a few weeks now and couldn’t understand how you got so many new words a day. This video taught me how to use the vocabulary tab and what a break through! 100 new words a day is totally possible with that feature 🙏 thank you
Thanks for the video. I like that you actually use lingQ yourself and that's why you promote it. I'm using it to learn Chinese Mandarin and I -love- that it adds pinyin to the hanzi so I'm reading an e-novel now that's way over my head but really enjoying it. Without a reading aid like that I would be stuck doing flash cards and it would be horrible. I didn't know about the time stamped feature and sentence mode I'll give it a try later with TH-cam.

Thank you Steve. You've prompted me to go and have a look at my Lingq account which I set up a while ago but haven't used yet. The main reason is that I'm learning Kurdish (Sorani) and have decided to go with Glossika as there's not much choice of apps for that language.
When I'm ready to incorporate another language again, I'm going to use Lingq becuase I like the look of the content. I feel quite motivated when I see some stats and graphs. I've been learning some Polish this year, so that will probably be my choice... With lockdown next week in the UK, I might be greedy and do Polish or maybe Arabic again.
Good for you that you promote your business. You should be proud of this program, and it's your livelihood too, so why wouldn't you want to promote it?
I like the examples screens you've given. I've just made a video on Glossika and it looks really boring compared to Lingq!! :-)
To be honest I'm even surprised that Glossika has Kurdish!
@@connorgioiafigliu Glossika's language list is a bit random! They don't have any of the other variants of Kurdish, e.g. Kurmanji which is the bigger language. However, I'm glad they have Sorani as it's difficult to find resources for this language.

I really like Steve and the way he shares his language learning techniques!
Nonetheless, from my perspective lingq is not a helpful choice for learning Chinese. To begin with the interface of lingq is confusing (to me).
In lessons the text is not highlighted to show what the speaker is currently reading.
Most of all I don’t think the randomized tests make really sense for learning the lingqs. They are mostly too simple or just out of context (to me). Furthermore the tests don’t work, when the pinyin of the word that is asked for is part of the definition of the word. Means it asks like „What is horse (mǎ) in Chinese?”.
Lastly it’s somehow not easy to cancel the subscription. You don’t have a simple button in the preferences tab. After searching the internet I found the appropriate link in a forum. In general that is most annoying to me, when service provider makes it hard for customers to find the “cancel” button.

Thx for explaining how you do it with the vocabulary. I was wondering how good do I have to know the word to allow myself to tick it off as known. 🤣🤣 Because often in context I know the word but to use it in the spoken language, guess I wouldn't. 😊

Steve -- not sure if you've ever tackled this one, but can you explain how you overcome the subjectivity of the LingQ "I know that word" method? You've set goals and you have statistics that you're compelled to make progress on -- doesn't that, on some level, cause you to move that word to 'known' more quickly than perhaps you should? And moving words back later?? Doesn't that mean you didn't know them in the first place. I've always had this issue with things like Anki decks and similar approaches that put the assessment of what's known and what's not on the end-user, rather than on the software. Thx.
it doesn't really matter. What matters is whether your comprehension improves, whether you understand more and more of what you are reading and listening to. Moving words to known is just a technique or a mechanical step, a detail, in the larger progression towards good comprehension. yes moving the word to known is subjective. There is no doubt, however, that when I have 20,000 known words I have a much higher level of comprehension than I when I had 5000 or 1000.

Hey Steve, I’m currently learning Chinese on LingQ and I have been readying it with pinyin but when I use pinyin I can recognize the word but if I turn it off I can’t recognize it or I remember the kanji’s meaning but don’t remember the way to read it.. if I can’t remember the way to read it but remember the meaning of the kanji should I put it as known or unknown? And should I turn off pinyin or keep it on for a while?

hi steve! great video as always. i have a question. i have been using lingQ a lot for russian, studying many texts, but i don't know if i should "master" the vocabulary of a text before moving to another one, or if i should just keep going. what do you think?
you should just keep going. It can be useful to review words every time you turn the page. But don't worry about what you remember. Don't try to master anything just keep going and you will notice how you understand more and more
@@Thelinguist You do engage in quite a bit of repetition through listening though, don't you? Do you think that, if you didn't, this "just keep going" approach would work anyway?
yes just keep going it would also work. I do find, especially in the early stages in a language, that it's useful to review words I have just met on a lesson page. Therefore I will review sometimes right after reading a page in other words when I turn the page

lingq is a very specific set of learning tools, a very specific learning environment. I really don't see how it compares to audio bilingual books.

I wish Steve would talk more about teaching languages rather than learning them since I'm a poliglot language teacher.
Just one question please, I'm learning Russian and German at the same time, how ever i speak all of English French and Arabic fluently, should learn 1 by 1, or i can continue to learn both of them?

@@jamescook2412 Yeah, I have a little caveat which is that when you reach a high level in one or both languages you can study them at the same time, but in general it's just best to focus all your efforts in one. For example, a few years back I would try studying French and Portuguese but since my level wasn't high enough in either I would suffer from mix-ups and general confusion, but now I can do it without too much trouble. Hope it helps.

I do have a more basic query on how and when you promote. For example, you come across a new word you never seen before. Does it stay 1? Do you make it 2 right away? I am tempted to make all words that I have a good definition of in lingq status 3, because I simply don't recognize the use of 1 and 2, and also I must admit the colors of 1 and 2 annoy me, while 3 indicates to me, I am in the phase of learning. I do recognize have lines of white words being more comfortable, because I know all these words. So, how do you promote stuff, before you make them known? Do you use 1 and 2? Do you use 4? Why K in stead of 4? I am sorry, my green is showing, I am still new at learning and 2300 words is my number at the moment.
there are no hard and fast rules for me. The first time I encounter a word obviously it is status 1. When I have seen the word a few times I might choose to move it to status two or sometimes directly to status three if I feel more comfortable with it. I never use status 4. I use the checkmark. Status 4 is there for a reason is having to do with our space repetition algorithm. However I never use space repetition so I don't bother with it
@@Thelinguist Thank you very much. I don't use space repetition either. As a result of this video however, I will start using the vocab in order to review words. I think that will help. Up until now I ignored it. Thanks for your speedy response, I appreciate it.
If you import from TH-cam a video with just-auto subtitles and no transcription, what will be the text on LingQ, if any?

The text should be the auto generated subtitles in the lesson at Lingq.
Lingq and Steve's work is generally great, the only issue I have is the interface isn't very user friendly and looks like something out of a 1996 website.

Most old people would probably be like "im too old for this/ there's no chance for me/ im not in my prime anymore/ ill be gone soon" etc etc making more and more excuses, even like my parents but they're 49, compare that to Steve whoose 70+, got to give to ya that im so impressed by him! I hope i (and all of us) can be like Steve even if i ever make it to 70+ or so :D
I tried LingQ with a 12 month subscription, now expired
Didn't work for me😫 still trying to learn korean but seems difficult for my brain
I tried it for a month and I didn't like it. It has several problems: 1. First, the dialogues should be ordered by level. 2. The automatic system keeps recommending audios that I have already listened to.
3. Studied dialogues later appear as unstudied. 4. When you write to support they do not answer. 5. I canceled my subscription 3 times and they never sent me a confirmation email. 6. It is very expensive for what it offers.
The best app to learn english its duo lingo .. comprobado la mejor ..

I showed you the iOS version of the mobile app. I don't know what the android looks like since I don't use it. The app is a little different from the browser version.

can someone please answer me: I'm learning japanese after that I want to learn korean.The problem is I don't like drama in any languge not just korean and I love reading novels and books in the target languge , my question is korean good in that regard? or should I learn German next (which I also want to learn sometime. thanks a lot
The only Korean films I watch are dramas, so I'm not a good person to answer that part of your question. But overall, I'd recommend spending a few weeks where you learn both Korean and German. After that, keep learning the one that interests you the most. It's okay to experiment with languages!
you should drop korean if you just want to read books and novels. its one of the most difficult languages and not worth your time. im 3 months in learning korean and my purpose is to watch kdrama, read the news, read/listen to useful podcast to expend my acknowledge
@cecmanju I'm playing devil's advocate here, but does it really make a difference whether they want to read books or novels or watch kdramas? Everyone has their own motivations and just because reading books does not motivate you in Korean, doesn't mean it isn't a motivation for someone else. Osamah said he loves reading books in the target language. If that motivates him as much as you are motivated by watching kdramas/reading the news/etc, then it is absolutely worth Osama's time to learn Korean! Plus, he said he was already learning Japanese, so it seems like he is up to the task in terms of learning difficult languages 😉

I need help guys, I am trilingual but struggling to master the target languages because I am not good even in my native language. When I try to improve my native language, I feel like I'm forgetting my foreign languages, but when I study foreign languages for a while I feel that I'm forgetting my native language.. my main problem is stuttering pretty often in any language that I'm learning, it's very frustrating, does someone have any advices?
Hi, when you say you forget a language, are you not speaking it or using it for a long period of time? It might help if you just do a little bit of each language every day, even if it's just listening to a TV show or radio program, or a language lesson with an app that you've already learned.
I was trying to learn three languages earlier in the year but found it too much as I wasn't at a good level in any one of them. i gave up with two of them and developed the other one. Now, I'm ready to return to one of the other languages as a focus. Meanwhile, I've still been listening to audio lessons with all of them, or at least watching some videos every week so that I don't forget some of the language....
@@AndyJugglesLanguages I'm using all of them every day, I read and do vocabularies practice with examples and sometimes even videocalling my friends for oral practice, I don't have problems to read or memorizing vocabularies, my main problem is actually the connection between the mind and the tongue, sometimes I say some words that I didn't want to say, and the funniest thing is that before saying each sentence I feel very confident to say it accurately, but when I speak I mess my words up, it's like if I had Alzheimer or aphasia.. but it's impossible because I'm 25, before I knew less vocabularies but I never get stuck like now
Don't worry about your native language and try to improve one foreign language at a time and see how that works. Sometimes if you study similar languages you can get mixed up.
@@teocantsleep4611 I see, I'm Italian, and l'm learning English and Mandarin, all of them are around b2 level, let's say that I understand more in Italian since is my native language.
The main problem is getting stuck or saying words that my brain didn't think even though I'm calm and confident.. It's creepy when I actually fail at something that it's supposed to be easy..
@@ronniejamesdio6889 A couple of things: first of all it's completely normal to get stuck, you just have to keep calm and think about alternative ways to say the same thing or just ask for help and clarification. Also, it's also okay to mess up, since you learn much more from mistakes than successes. I think English and Chinese are sufficiently different that you can plausibly study both at a time, but I assure you that your progress will be better if you focus on one first and then the other. But yeah, I wouldn't worry about your Italian, since you're not going to forget it and if it suffers it's only going to be very mild, especially if you live in an italian speaking country.
I don't use lingQ but is a good resourse to learn in the Phone, but i don't understand anything wtihout translate, and i don't like it then i am learning, firsh lenguage with contened that i like, but lingQ i used to listening well

How is your Russian doing Steve after all those years?
if you check my list of videos you will see that I've had had a few Russian conversations recently. I've slipped a bit. I make more mistakes. My comprehension hasn't declined. I express myself more or less as freely as before. It's just that there are more mistakes and more missing vocabulary. It wouldn't take much to bring it up to where it was before and even beyond.
Paraguay is Where I am from, We have 2 main languages, one of them is Spanish and the other one is Guarani, it's a pity that guarani is taught so poorly and therefore We are losing it
Going through the list of level 3 words is BORING. I'd rather just read and set words to known as I encounter them. Though I can imagine if you're trying to get to 20,000 known words, it's useful.

2000?! 😳 I have 500 known words last month. I must be doing something wrong.
He is retired. He probably does nothing in his day other than learning language.
if you're not strict on grading and do some hours reading everyday, 2k words a month is easy when you're not advanced in the language. Isn't the idea to expose yourself to the language rather than to remember it perfectly before moving on to next word.
I do read a lot and this generates my LingQs created which are in the area 50,000 right now. The only way I can make sure I get 500 new words a week is by focussing on my status 3 words, going through a list of these and deliberately moving them to known. I try to get 100 every day.

Dear Steve, I am very disappointed about your new policy on Lingq !!!
This month I wanted to give some break my journey. So I don't want to pay extra money for not using the lingq service but suddenly I realized that I need to pay 2 dollar to keep my langauge content and lings which I saved in a very long time. It is not really cool and good to profits from the people who want to give a break. I think you are wise enough to know that not all user of lingq live in developed country, for some of us 2 dollar per month is not a small amount!!!

I checked with the people who handle this and they told me that that is our policy. We end up with a lot of people's data when people leave because there is a fair amount of turnover. And those are the rules. Sorry I can't help you.

I think that you start focusing too much on " linq" which is too bad car your videos are becoming like commercial ones. I prefer that you keep distant from " linq" because we consider you as an expert in teaching - learning languages and not a marketing officer of a company. I don't want to be offensive but that's the truth.
I kind of agree. Steve has been around on TH-cam for 8-9 years I think. I think he is running out of ideas. He talked about everything regarding language learning. But it's true that stuff related to linq are slowly taking over this channel.
I have to wonder what makes Lingosteve an "expert in teaching". His "oh so innovative" approach of reading / listening to enjoyable stuff and learning unknown vocab?

lingQ is his main resource to study languages. how can he talk about the way he learn languages without talking about lingQ?
The whole thing about him running out of ideas is probably why there are interviews often. But every guest so far is either a polyglot or speaks a language that Steve knows and give advice to learners. I tried recommending him to do an interview with an English teacher in Thailand who speaks native-fluent Thai. Of course Steve doesn't know the language and it's not on Lingq, but some viewers here may want to learn it or are trying to learn with other resources, but it may help to get advice from someone who has been down that road and now speaks Thai fluently. If not, his ego is getting in the way - embarrassed to talk with those who speak a language he doesn't, even at the viewers' expense. If his channel is meant for language learners, this ego should not get in the way for the sake of some viewers learning language he doesn't know
