    Walter Hill's 1978 cult film The Driver still ranks as one of the all-time greatest cinematic police chases thanks to the raw driving skill on display and visceral filming style. It was an instrumental inspiration for the Driver video game series as well as Nicolas Winding's Drive, which some consider as a spiritual successor.

      And had people known that when the game was released in 1999, 90% of them wouldn't have returned it to the store! Lmao. People always got hung up on the slalom, but my buddy knew what to do because he was very familiar with this movie and remembered this scene.

    • @WhiteJarrah
      @WhiteJarrah ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@revokdaryl1 I doubt that many people returned it. _Driver_ was a commercial success. But the confusion factor for what you're supposed to do is legendary. The sad part is on the main menu under training, there is a practice demo with a replay showing you EXACTLY what you are supposed to do in order to pass. I think had many people seen that or at least got the demo replay in the mission itself a lot of headaches would have been spared.

      @77PacerStudios 7 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Correct! You know, that crashing sound was used in NUMEROUS car chases of the 70s and 80s! It's usually described as the "Wilhelm scream for cars". However, these are ALL the titles I've actually found it in:
      1. Vanishing Point (1971)
      2. M*A*S*H (1972-1983)
      3. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
      4. The Last American Hero (1973)
      5. The Seven-Ups (1973)
      6. 99 and 44/100% Dead (1974)(heard in trailer at least)
      7. The Towering Inferno (1974)
      8. Race With The Devil (1975)
      9. The French Connection II (1975)
      10. The Kansas City Massacre (1975)
      11. Cannonball (1976)
      12. Gator (1976)
      13. Silver Streak (1976)
      14. Smokey & the Bandit (1977)(heard in trailer but NOT the final film)
      15. The Driver (1978)
      16. Hooper (1978)
      17. The Hunter (1980)(heard in trailer at least)
      18. Eyewitness (1981)(heard in trailer but NOT the final film)
      19. The Terminator (1984)(ONLY in the original mono mix)
      20. Commando (1985)
      21. Mischief (1985)
      22. Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986)(heard in trailer at least)
      23. Maximum Overdrive (1986)(heard in trailer at least)
      24. Return on the Black Thrasher: The Movie (2009)(made by me)
      Of these, only 15 are 20th Century Fox productions, so it's a good bet that those guys are responsible for creating it. Again, there's bound to be more titles, but these are ALL I've found it in.

    Bro this is literally the Game Driver
    Update: According to Driver series wiki (the game driver) "it featured a storyline inspired by 1970's car chase movies such as Bullitt (1968) and The Driver (1978) and based in four real-life cities; Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City.
    So this was the original one John Tanner or at least portraying him

      I drove a first generation escape with one. What is wrong with the market? Can't believe such an awesome shifter had to fall out of market. The only car with a front bench seat I ever was in was a late 90's Ford Taurus. The knee room was awesome! I can go on and on about column shifters and front bench seats!

      Not too sure about that since pickup trucks still have it. I like them for the ergonomics and room it makes.

    This is one of my favorite scenes involving stunt driving, and be sure to also see The China Syndrome, where Jack Lemmon outruns some power authority goons while driving a BMW 2002, which was my ride of choice in the late 70s. A friend of mine had a Mercedes with this body style, a 240D with no A/C as he was very frugal. Still loved riding in it, built like a tank.
