Adoption doesn’t refer to taking a child home from an orphanage. Adoption has to do with giving your inheritance to a child, that is, we have received the spirit of adoption. Abba is the same thing as father. The writer repeats it for emphasis. Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: What does the law of the spirit of life tell us? That we are children of God. We are heirs of God. I am a son of God today. The bible doesn’t use daughters for inheritance. That is why he calls us (male and female) sons of God. I am an heir of God. Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, Vs 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. Vs 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Vs 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. There is a teaching out there that speaks about a dichotomy of the use of sons and children referring to a believer at different stages of growth. That teaching stems from a lack of understanding. You can check our material on ‘Now are we the sons of God’ for a clear understanding. There are different words used for different things. As touching our inheritance, we are called sons. Sons refers to a mature son who can take over from the Father. As touching the new birth, we are called children. Children means seed. It was translated from a word that means seed. When we are not growing spiritually, we are called NEPIOS; a babe in Christ. And that has nothing to do with our inheritance. We are his sons and at the same time his child. Galatians 4: 5b … that we might receive the adoption of sons. The operative word there is receive. You do not become an adopted son. You receive it. Receive means that you were given. The adoption of sons is a gift in Christ. You don’t become it. It is not a stage in Christ. Galatians 4: 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. I have the holy spirit; the spirit of God because the new covenant is the ministration of the spirit. Not of death. I have and I walk in the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus. Under the old covenant I see man’s work. In the new covenant, I see God’s work. Glory to God!*
