San Rafael de Guatuso, Costa Rica - We had an honor to visit and learn from the Maleku Tribe in Costa Rica, and they invited us to try their local cuisine. It was an incredible experience and I’m very excited to share it with you here!
Indigenous tribes in Costa Rica are the only people allowed to hunt in Costa Rica, just as they’ve done for thousands of years. They are very much in tune with nature and they never hunt or damage nature in any unsustainable way. They use everything they get. Today they had an iguana, a common part of the Maleku people diet. The preparation was very simple - just boiled with cassava.
Additionally they also cooked fish wrapped in leaves and a banana leaf packet, then roasted in fire. And a whole chicken cooked with vegetables, and finally a roasted plantain mashed in water as a beverage - this is something they mentioned that every Maleku person drinks from kids to adults - part of their traditional nutrition.
It was an educational meal and really memorable to learn about the Maleku Tribe, original Costa Ricans and their traditional, often unseen, foods.

You are respectful to the locals and enjoy the food they prepare. You never insult their choices. Unlike a lot of bad tourists who think everything is about them and what their Mommy cooked for them.

Hi Mark, I've been a huge fan of your videos for many years, and I always watch your videos again whenever I travel to any country you've shown on your videos. As a Costa Rican myself, I never thought you would go to Costa Rica for your videos. And I have to say that this video in particular is perhaps my favorite. Your level of respect, willingness to learn, friendliness, and dedication is beyond anything we get to see on the Internet these days. Kudos to you and your team, and a huge thank you for showing the greatness of the small native Maleku people of Costa Rica. I learned more about the Malekus by watching this video than in my whole life as a Costa Rican!!!
Ah Mark, thank you for respecting cultural diversity. Amazing to see similarities across cultures. I was raised in Durban, South Africa. My mum, being the daughter of an Indian immigrant, grew up eating iguana and I was raised to slaughter chickens, all being a normal way of life for us. I truly admire the respect you show to people and what each culture considers food. The humility that both you and Ying demonstrate is so authentic. Long-time supporter, forever supporter! Thanks for showing my country and maleku culture to the world, I loved these three Costa Rica episodes, I hope you come back soon so you can experience the gastronomy of Limón province in the caribbean, it is absolutely delicious, and very different from the rest of the country.
Thanks to you Mark and the Maleku people for sharing their food and culture with us. I had never heard of them before today and now we have had one glimpse into their unique way of life. I hope all of the Maleku people are successful and can continue to live the traditional lifestyle they cherish.

Much respect you Mark for always showing love, care, compassion for cultures aroudn the world, especially the Indigenous cultures, particularly in the Americas, they have been historically marginalized. Me being of partial Indigenous descent, this warms my heart. You deserve all the success you get in life!!

Mark is right. If you eat meat, you should know where it comes from and how is obtained. I lived on a farm in Puerto Rico until I was 15. My grandmother tought me how to kill the animals and prepare them for cooking. That's just part of farming animals for consumption. Fresh meat is the best tasting. I love Mark, he is willing to taste anything and he is very respectful. ❤❤❤

I loved this video, it is truly stellar. Thanks for portraying this culinary tradition from our country, from one of our 8 indigenous peoples. I fondly remember eating at the Baja Talamanca Bribri territory and the Rey Curré territoru from the Borucas for their amazing Baile de los Diablitos festival... I have visited other reserves, but unfortunately haven't eaten there. El mayor aprecio para la gente maleku y de nuestras otras culturas indígenas, mis mayores respetos por difundir y no dejar desaparecer sus culturas.

the taste of Iguanas meat is almost taste like a chicken, so nice to see their culture..specially their native dishes, the way they prepare their healthy and delicious food..

Maleku Tribe! Much respect To them for keeping the 'tradition' that dates way back. Cooking food without any kinds of spices and only a 'little' salt, had to be the purest and freshest of food. Thanks, @Mark Wiens for showcasing the Maleku Tribe.

The Native people of Canada smoke salmon in half keeping a head area connection to hang on the fence facing the fire in a round shape. The fish slowly cooked with the heat and smoke came from the fire and slowly dried up the moisture of the fish. They left there for days to be ready to eat and preserve them in the future.

An indigenous family lives just three miles from me on land they have owned for centuries. Nice people speaking great Spanish and even a little English. They make mortars and pestils an other things out of solid rock.

Some of us costarricans value the Maleku people and the other seven indigenous groups as a living treasure. They have suffered and fought over the ages so they could survive in the cultural concert of this diverse country. Thankfully they are being recognize as the original peoples but the job is not finished yet and the fight for justice and acceptance continues...Will you go to the Caribbean coast? The food there is from another world!!!

In ecuador that fish dish wrapped in leaves is called "maito"
one of the delicacies found in the jungle
We have also like that dish in philippines,that fish called tilapia wrapped with banana leaves. And we dip with soy sauce,onion and chilli.
