Let's just keep one bloody thing secret for a change please? Leica M cameras and M lenses were not that ridiculously expensive five years ago until You Tubers started to buy up all the decent examples of them on the 2nd hand market, and the price just kept going up and up and up. The same is true of film. Please, enjoy the camera but leave the bloody price out of it.
I got an R8 two years ago and its my baby I love it, and yes the lens CAMS are an hassle and changing the battery is the one most irritating experiences of my life. But shooting with it is just a joy in of its self and just advancing the film makes me smile
I can't figure out how to take off the battery door, my goodness. The R8/R9 weight disparity is actually pretty significant. Might have to upgrade to the R9 soon
There is a little film rewind window on the back door to the right. You will see a zebra pattern move as you rewind the film - this is to show when the film is actually released from the ‘sprocket’ so you can stop rewinding if you want to leave the film leader out. Also if you use ROM lenses (the ones which are chipped) the interaction with a dedicated flash is crazy good - fill in is effortless as it balances back light w your subject. The 60mm macro is an insanely good lens and better for street photog than a 90 as it is more versatile.
These are definitely more than 400usd overhere, more like 800usd (body only). Still want to try one out, such a cool camera, doesn't seem to be overly large.
Ii struggle with the rangefinder/slr question every time I travel and I have to choose which system to bring along. I love rangefinders and making images with my M6 has become an intuitive process. But I also often crave the range of lenses that I have for my Nikons. Different tools for different situations, but especially when flying and I have to limit my load, I usually have to leave one behind. I usually default to the M6, almost every bring a 90mm. BTW, nice homage to Bill Cunningham.
Interesting to see you use a Leica SLR. I somehow always shy away from that line up, but honestly don't know why. So very curious to see upcoming videos how you compliment your M6 with the R8 :) For me I combine the Leica MP with a Nikon FM2 and do love the 1/4000 shutter speed on the FM2 just for the simple fact of cutting light to shoot wide open, so I can relate what you mean. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you Chris! Thank you very much for your awesome videos in 2024 which inspires me to shoot more film and looking forward for 2025 :)
The main reason is lack of repair options. Also...if the electronics in the R8 die...you have a Leica paperweight. Course, this is a good reason to stick to the R6.2 since its a fully mechanical camera that in the right hands can be repaired. I just had my R7 get a full new shutter from DAG.....but it isn't cheap.
1:36 That is technically not true. The lenses are different because they sit at different distances from the film plane. That makes them render different images by design. Yes, they're close. But the rangefinder lens will always have an advantage because its rear element sits MUCH closer to the film plane than the R mount lens.
@@whoschrischu correct, that‘s why you make clueless - false statement videos for the people to learn nothing relevant - but the poser to get the clicks.
I’ll admit after having a Leica for a couple years. It’s a blessing to shoot with these gorgeous machines. But it’s really just buying into the name and what the brand represents. While there are some things I wish my film M have like shutter speed past 1k or the viewfinder to be bigger for glass wearers. I’m fine with it and it fits the way I shoot.
You're doing a fantastic job! I have a quick question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
1/8000s shutter speed is nothing new. Nikon’s N8008 (F801) that came out in the mid 80’s had a 1/8000s shutter speed. Most prosumer models did after that. In 1999, Nikon released the D1 with a 1/16000s shutter speed.
great video. it’s really true a leica m is more like a wide angle reportage camera in my opinion and rhe keica r8 is much more versatile. also the leica r7 is very nice (or the mechanical r6) and much smaller than the r8.
Medium tele on rangefinders (like 85mm or 90mm) is still doable. One of the fine examples, I think, is Ralph Gibson. Macro work is practically the domain of SLR. Put a 55 macro and you get a short minimum focusing distance (30-cm ish). Good luck doing that with rangefinder. It's reasonable to have those 2 systems because they work better on different use cases. .. .. Yeah, Leica R system is kinda underrated. Most folks go crazy for the M system. Perhaps I need to buy one, say the R3.
I find ignorance irritating and being ignorant because it's your "style" much more irritating. Shutter speeds reference a specific Time Period, the SECOND. When you say 1/8000 Shutter the actual definition of that ridiculous statement is 1 part of an shutter divided into 8000 pieces. So wake up and smell the coffee, it is 1/8000 second.
changing one word in a video just to trigger people to post educational comments as well as boost engagement. I’d say it’s a net positive, 🎉. Great video per usual Chris
The issue ius that the R mount glass is no good compared to Nikkors, for example :-). Much worse contrast, worse anti-reflex... I have dozens of Nikkor manual lenses, and owned five different R Summiluxes and Summicrons (kept only 50/2 and 28/2.8). There's no legendary Leica glass look. It's just in the brain. So many times I've manipulated people by pretending Nikon-shot pics are from the Leica M and got all those "aaaahs" and "ooohs" and comments about the legendary bokeh etc. (Note: Apart from R-mount I also own quite a bit of M-mount gear...) I admit I like the R8 looks. And I like the heritage of the brand. But that's all :-).
@@MichaelCortese1 you don't think the R Summilux's are worth it? I do agree that some of the lenses are overhyped by the cine mod filmmaking community as I see no "defining characteristics" for filmmaking; however, you can't deny the consistency in high performance with Leica glass. But obviously, to each their own. I've seen the 35-70mm around the block before, but never saw much or heard much about it until now. Maybe I'll try it out. Nikkor F lenses are indeed legendary though
a video on the Hunchback of Solms! Huge, fat, too late, too expensive! The R series Minolta! The R4 worst Leica ever. Minolta version only less expensive! No better.. go to Canon, Nikon, Pentax...
BS, many talk about and always have. The best SLR is a great tool, but once it‘s not a great tool anymore, not even Leica will repair it - expensive paperweight. So have fun with promoting waste of money to others.
I'd never buy a Leica. It's only a status, show off, look at me I have a Leica, camera. There are plenty of camera brands out there that are just as good or maybe better.
I have talkeed about it. Quite a lot.
The Hunchback of Solms!
I bought mine after watched your video of R8 ! really a gem with the summicron 50 and the 100 APO macro lens

This is quickly becoming my favorite photography channel 😂
This camera just went up to $1000 after this video. In 3 months Leica M6’s have increased in price by $600
Love my R9, have the 50, 90, and 180mm lenses. All fantastic lenses. The camera itself is a joy to use.

@@whoschrischu Unfortunately the only advice I have for the battery door is persistence.
I’ve got two R9’s and an MP and to me the R is a way more useable camera than the M, no contest.
Thanks, Chris! I enjoyed your review of the R6.

I love the colour quality you have created. Very "Kodachromy" and that also applies to you video! How did you do it?
Loads a Leica rangefinder without a problem. Struggles to load an SLR. lol. Make it make sense, Chris.
I'm built poorly, what can I say
Love your work.
That blue jacket looks really good on you
Wait color film???? 😝 it’s been a sec
Also…. Jacket is lit
You should also try the Leicaflex🙂 SL2

Are the electronics on the R8/9 reliable? I've read that is the reason why they are cheap. Unfixable.
Only one way to find out
The R line definitely has a reputation for poor quality.
lol I was looking at this camera on eBay last week and there were good copies for $240. I went to look now and they're all $400
might be because of the black friday thingy
nice watch

fabulous
lmao for some reason I can't switch audio in this video from German to US English
some youtube bug I guess?
will Leica still repair the R8?
Good luck getting crons and luxes for the R series at that 400 dollar price tag LOL. Just saying.

If you’re in NYC I’m selling an R8 body, an R8 DMR setup, and some R glass.

The only leica ive given a crap about. I think its the body shape and that shutter speed. I moved on quickly though. Ha.
I was thoroughly surprised with how smooth the operation of this camera was. Aside from the grip, this setup is a steal
My first and preferred Leica. Owned one since 1998. All pale in comparison.
The film equivalent to the Q lineup.
pretty good comparison
