Man, am I one of the lucky generation to have grown up on Gerry Anderson's shows. RIP Gerry Anderson, and you too Sylvia. Thanks for an imaginative and adventure-filled childhood.
Priceless!!!!!! A perfect send up to a classic theme song from one of my favorite shows as a young lad. I'm thinking Craig is underappreciated as a dancer. Smooth moves! All the space chicks will flock to Craig.
I Love It ! This actually IS a ringtone on my phone( Yes I'm a geek don't judge ). Gerry Anderson was so far ahead of others in the Sci-fi genre. And he had so much fun doing it .It is automatically passed to the fans of his shows. Alot of Sci-fi shows forget that and try to be dark, broody and boringly serious. Not Anderson's shows just listen to this end theme of Fireball XL-5 and try not to smile. You can't do it .The song just makes you feel good.
Very cool opening. Super retro. I watched Fireball XL5 as a kid. Loved the ending song especially. They should have dressed Paris Hilton up as Venus from the show though.
I've been wondering for years about the 2 guys who always perform with Craig. At first I thought "one's probably his manager or assistant and the other is probably a stage hand or something..' That would make it even funnier for me. I've been a fan of Craig's since 2005. So glad he recently did a standup. Saw it on Netflix. He looked so happy that the audience still liked him. If you see it, check out the sweet look on his face as the audience clapped.
So cool, Craig ! Every sunday morning in Denver from 1970-71 after doing my Denver Post paper route - about 8:00 am. Hah! So fun to go back there. I was 14.
Back in the early-'60s my mother had to really persuade us to give up Mighty Mouse and give Fireball XL5 a look see. We kiddies had a real death-grip on Mighty Mouse but upon watching the first episode it was as scales falling from our eyes. I wrote an impassioned letter, being all of nine years-old back in '65, to NBC in New York City urging them to bring back Fireball XL5 after it had run for one season. I did get a response which stated that there were no plans, unfortunately, to bring the show back to the network. I was crushed. Not a year later, Fireball XL5 did begin a run on a local UHF TV station which was like a gift to we youngsters.
Year it is, and it's the extended version, with one verse that wasn't used in the closing credits version. My wife and I danced to this as our first dance as a married couple back in 2006.
XL5 was not in color, but they colorized an episode in 2005 and released it on DVD. (The episode was "A Day in the Life of a Space General.") Stingray was Gerry Anderson's first color series.
This was lost in my memories. My grandfather made us watch all of his prime tv shows. What triggered of recovering this memory was watching hoarders. (A man had a whole collection worth of action figures). I my be 1/2 of 40 but I’m grateful to my grandfather showing me all of his collections before passing on.
I'm 36 and love XL5 when cable foxtel first came to Australia, I think it was back in 1994. It was on late at night on TV1 hits, then it was Bob Newheart and Mary Tyler Moore. When XL5 season finished it was replaced with Captain Scarlet then Stingray. Now foxtel is shit with the same repeats
Does anybody know where I can find the version of "Fireball" that was used here? I'm talking about the version with the backup vocals. Every version of this song I can find just has Don Spencer's lead vocals, but not the backup chorus. Were those added by The Late Late Show for this specific performance? Because they seem to fit too well with the original recording for that.
Great! I love all the fun song openings. This and "Istanbul" are my favorites. You gotta admit though, there's a lot of aluminum foil in that production!!
@Iluveryanstiles I was @ friends house once and the TV was on and craig came on. The Monster Mash opening this part Halloween. I just sat rapt...the people with me were like, "why on earth is she so facinated?"
Blees ya! You have to love the Gerry Anderson shows. Sad to say that Gerry has just announced he has Alzheimers...hope we manage to get the CGI Tunderbirds before it's too late.
Boy you could tell that that was an American audience because they did not know when to come in and go out on that song That was like the Thunderbirds and all those old TV shows from the sixties and seventies
This was great! And the last time I watched any late night yak show was when Craig was helming that show. Once he left I lost all interest in late night talk shows, which have devolved into radical far left propaganda. Craig was a true gem during his time on late night TV.

Craig Ferguson knows how to entertain people....just brings a smile every time I watch this! Really miss Craig doing late-night!!
I just ran across this and it took me right back to my childhood in the 1960's. Wonderful tribute to a simpler time.
I am a big fan of Craig's and watched Fireball XL-5 as a kid. I can't believe I missed this when it was first on

When we got married in 2006, this was the very first song that my wife and I danced to. Yes, we're both huge SF fans. :-)
Beautiful just beautiful ❤
Kill me now, That is one of the funniest skits I've seen in a long time!!!
I never get tired of this.
This was the first episode I ever saw of TLLS. Let's say Craig Ferguson left quite the first impression on me lol been a fan ever since.
Brilliant version of an old fave.

This song is ultra cute and the reason behind this lipsync is even cuter. Craigy forever.
They look like they are really enjoying dancing to this great, campy song.
Very cool opening. Super retro. I watched Fireball XL5 as a kid. Loved the ending song especially.
They should have dressed Paris Hilton up as Venus from the show though.
As Comic Book Guy would say: "Best... Opening... Ever..."

yep, and vocals by Don Spencer
I think that's Don Spencer's vocals from the original.

Not being funny, but there can't be that many Americans who actually know what Fireball XL5 is unless they are over 45 years old!
matelot95

It helps that like Stephen Colbert and Steve Martin, he LOOKS so so normal.
Taking the mickey out of a classic Gerry Andersom classic..tuttut.
Great! I love all the fun song openings. This and "Istanbul" are my favorites. You gotta admit though, there's a lot of aluminum foil in that production!!
This great! I sure miss Craig. What is the name of the girl performing with them? She's cute!
LOL too funny!
LOVE IT!!! But why no suit for you,Craig?

It's the Fireball XL5 theme, by Barry Gray (I think).

Lol that was funny, Craig is a laugh.

Boy you could tell that that was an American audience because they did not know when to come in and go out on that song That was like the Thunderbirds and all those old TV shows from the sixties and seventies

Craig Ferguson wasn't funny 14 years ago and probably still isn't.
