I had so much fun watching your video and I am so filled with hope and excitement. I’ve already started my new pants.
I’m glad that I was encouraging! After using TDCO a few times it’s now easier to wrap my head around shape and where fabric needs to be added or subtracted. Fingers crossed that you have good results!
Janine, I am in the same boat. At 71 my body has changed and I have a large belly and wider waist. You convinced me! I’m off to get the magazine. Your pants look good. Well done.
You got this, Claudia! Please let me know how you do! 💐
I love those slimmer fit pants on you as well. Very nice!
Thank you! 😊
Janine both makes are fantastic and really suit you. Your wide legged pair are very flattering and I love the colour. Well done for persevering and getting a good fit. Your excitement and pleasure is so infectious. I can see you filling your wardrobe with lots of colours.
Thank you so much, Linda! I think this was almost the most fun I've had sewing! 😁
I just found your channel. As a way over 50 woman, I appreciate the specificity of your posts. I have only sewn the most basic of pants due to lousy fitting technique. I can't wait to give the TDCO technique a try.
Regarding dyeing fabric. Whenever possible, I order white fabric for dyeing my makes. I think I save on waste that way. I hope so, otherwise I have an awful lot of white fabric!
Welcome, Sandra! Thank you for watching my channel!
What type of fabric do you usually buy for dying? I know that cotton will work and synthetics will not but are there others that are good choices? I haven't dyed fabric since high school art class but it sounds like something different to try.
I have used linen and cotton. Cotton knits and bamboo knits will also work. I recently purchased some tencel blended stretch twill from Fabric Wholesale Direct which states that it is prepared for dyeing. I get powdered dyes for natural fabrics. There are also dyes for synthetics, but I haven't tried them. @@JanineSews
I have just finished my TDCO toile - how I laughed at the shape of my resulting pattern! Yes, at 78 I have a tummy, but not much of a bottom. I never dreamt that a pattern shaped like that would make the best toile I have ever achieved. I can't wait to cut out and sew my trousers!🌷
Janine, thank you for your excellent video explaining and demonstrating this revolutionary method.🌷
Congratulations, Kerstin! Doesn’t matter what the pattern looks like. If it fits, it’s perfect just like you! 👏 👏 👏
Great review, a few people have recommended this method to me as I’ve spent so many hours trying to make pants.
Thanks! It's absolutely worth trying. I'm now on about pair #5 using TDCO and if nothing else, I'm starting to understand why there are creases in different places. For example, the whiskers creases at the front sometimes are diminished when I add more fabric to the top of the pants towards the side seams. I think it's a good tool for your sewing kit.
You look wonderful in your pants!! I have been waffling about TDCO, but your experience has really motivated me. Thank you so much for sharing!
You are so welcome! There are lots of great resources now if you would like more guidance. The Crooked Hem has recorded a series of YT videos that get really positive reviews - th-cam.com/video/0Cgo5s8yC1I/w-d-xo.html
I really do need to try this! Jennifer Stern did a whole month on this method and hearing from other people, has inspired me as well.
my only fitting issue is fat in her knees, and that affects the way that my pants fit so hopefully this will solve that.
I think you'll find that this works well, especially since you add to the outside seam allowance and that would give you ease where you need it. We all need it in different places!
Ruth Collins, the creator of the method has a lot of really good info on Instagram and she also responds to questions so if you need some more guidance, take a look there (Insta handle is @ithacamaven )
Congrats on TWO pairs of pants! The struggle is real…I would suggest when you lose a little weight you remove the waistband and take some of the extra length and put the waistband back on. As you mentioned, we each get to choose where the pants fit. Another experiment if you’re up for it is to add a fly front to the pants that already work…easy peasy to do. All the best on all your endeavors.
BTW_ it wasn’t a mistake at making the waist so high..it was simply a scientific experiment. Celebrate the success with more encouraging words…you deserve them
Thank you for your support! I was thinking that I could definitely remove the waistband and move it down. Maybe I won’t throw out the pattern 😉. It’s great to make some forward progress in fitting. One of the hardest things about fitting is not being able to be ‘perfect’ after a try or two. 💕
Glad to find you again, Janine! Lost all my Utube subs when I moved and changed phones.
Hi Juanita! Apologies for not responding sooner. Good to see you again!
Oh my goodness- I have to try this! Like you, I have spent hours trying to draft a pair of pants that fit me perfectly to no avail, I also cannot understand why I could go to the store and every single pair of pants I bought fit me perfectly, lol! I will definitely give this a try and thank you!
Isn't it crazy?! Pant fitting is just so overly complicated! I'm about to start another project with a bit more involved pattern (pockets, maybe yoke, maybe both) and I'm going to try to take good pictures along the way.
I’m intrigued. This is the first time I’ve heard of this method. Pants are my favorite thing to make and I’m always looking for methods to improve fit. Thanks ☺️
Jan, you might find some tricks that help you to fit pants a bit more quickly! Jen Stern reviewed the method on her TH-cam channel last week using a new-to-her pattern (not her sloper) and she seemed to think that it had some real positives.
Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/3Xuo1yrF5nw/w-d-xo.html
Your pants look great, especially the linen ones! Very elegant. I had good results with this method, too. Just discovered your channel and really like the way you present your material. New subscriber.
Thank you, Robyn and hello! 👋 I appreciate your kind words and look forward to seeing you again!
Yes! We add extra fabric for a large bust ( any bust, for that matter ) as bodices hang from shoulders. Thanks for the insights! Well done!
Excellent observation! I didn't think of that 😁
I’ve been thinking I would like to make the cursor ? Top I’m going to try that pant fitting. You gave me courage💐
Sandra, I know you can do it! Just take your time and don't beat yourself up. The fitting part was as easy as the sewing, and that was just one row of stitches after another. 👏🏻
Sorry you have been ill. 😔 Glad you are better and had encouraging results with the pants.. Thanks for the review. I ordered the magazine from Amazon. I'm on my own fitting journey and have not even tried pants, yet. I look forward to learning more about this method. 🙂
Thank you! I've probably tried fitting pants about five or six times in total so it's definitely out of my comfort zone. I hope that you'll find the magazine article helpful!
Thank you for this idea. I have been struggling with making pants to fit so I will try and get this magazine. It looks great and makes alot of sense.
Oleta, this method sort of turned my brain on its head. It makes sense and is so much easier to do on our own. 💕
Hi from England.I ave been following J. Stern Designs doing this method and I thought, 'that seems logical'. I haven't done it yet. You have given me enthusiasm to make some trousers soon. I have so much trouble with trousers, me made and rtw as, like you, I have a middle aged tummy and I also have a flat bottom! I am going to try to obtain the Trheads magazine. Thanks for doing this video.
Christine, I'm so glad that Jen Stern is doing her video series because it really helps to demonstrate exactly what to do. I hope you will give this method a try because I think you'll find that it is so much easier than what we all have been doing.
The Crooked Hem has apparently put together an extensive series of videos and Ruth Collins (the top down centre out lady) gives them high praise. Here's a link: thecrookedhem.net/videos/
@@JanineSewsThanks, Janine.
Hi Janine, just found your video. I am 70 and just got back into sewing but have been terrified to attempt pants. Through my research of pattern (pant) drafting, I found the TDCO method and will definitely give it a try. My body shape is very similar to yours so I feel quite encouraged now that I have watched your video. I too live in Alberta just outside of Calgary and think your top was really cute.
Hi! Thanks so much for watching my channel, and I apologise for the late response to your comments! TDCO still makes me excited to make pants! It's really been a game changer for me. We have a Calgary sewing Meetup group and you're welcome to join and attend sessions if you feel like driving into the city!
I am so glad you are back and feeling better. I have that issue of Threads. You have encouraged me to give fitting solo a try!
Lori, I hope you'll give it a try! It was so much easier to try to fit when focusing on the waistband. No messing with pins in places that are difficult to pin 😁🤣
I absolutely love watching you as you are so down to earth. By the way, I think both of your pair of pants look fantastic
Diane, that's so kind. Thank you for watching my videos 💐
Wow! It does make sense when you think about it! Glad you're feeling better.
Thanks, Karen!
Feeling better but it sure took a lot of time!
Yahoo! I love your Stampede Rhapsody Blouse. It sure was hot this year, but I bet it was fun to wear!
I've been so curious about this pants-fitting method and I was very happy to see your video.
I also wondered why RTW pants always seem to fit and I don't have the crotch curve issues that I do when I make pants! This makes so much sense!
Megan, it just is inexplicable to me that I can buy RTW pants but always struggle with sewing. This method sure makes sense. I really want to try something more fitted.
We had nice weather for Stampede this year but were glad to have indoor options when we went to the grounds 🥵.
Thank you Janine, from a 70+-year-old! I read Ruth's TDCO article and listened to her too. Finding the comments on Paterrnrview led me to you here on TH-cam. I'm getting the In the Folds Wide Leg Pattern (from Peppermint mag) printed and armed with your success and 2 mirrors will make my first attempt... So far in 3 years of trying to fit my 'so different' body shape I have only managed 1 wearable trouser (UK!) toile! Fingers crossed for a second...
Toni, sorry I'm so late in responding. Have you had a chance to try making your pants?
I have to pick up Peppermint Magazine when I'm over in the U.K. Sounds like they have some good patterns!
JStern Designs has videos doing sewalongs with that pattern and this method. Not Canadian but remembers to address our Canadian supply needs.
So glad I came across your vlog! Please think of the brown as a basic, like khaki-they go with almost everything and are very flattering! You have a nice voice and give clear details. I would appreciate closeups when you're showing fit. Great job, I'm a new fan!❤
Thank you, Patricia! I will definitely work to add more close up pictures. I appreciate you mentioning this!
I really appreciate hearing your experience with this method. Your delivery is clear and engaging. I had tried other fitting methods and left frustrated after using up umpty old sheets as toiles just trying to get a basic pair of straight leg pants. I tried drafting my own basic pants with two different methods, and that was horrifying. It seemed to me that the more I messed with the pattern, the worse things got. Your enthusiasm is encouraging, especially since I'm roughly of an age with you and my body type varies from the mannequin ideal. I will try to go get that magazine issue too so I can get the full deets from the author herself. I had rage quit trying to make pants, but now I feel like I might be able to get something to work if I try once more.
Thank you, Kristina. I completely understand your frustration. And it seems like once we start examining our bodies in our me-made pants, we start noticing the flaws in ready to wear. It's a bit of a vicious circle.
In the video I posted on August 31, I included some links to a couple more sources for information on Top Down Center Out. Ruth is on the Sew Organised Style podcast, and what may be most helpful is the TH-cam video that Jennifer Stern posted in the last few days. Jennifer is a sewing teacher and from what I understand, she does a great job of demonstrating the process and adds a couple of helpful tips. (I've only watched the first few minutes but it's on my playlist for the weekend!).
I hope you'll give this method a try!
I wish I had your method when I was trying to make my pant pattern fit , but with trail and error i have one that fits I have been using it for years . I change the leg size i might put one pocket or two, zipper front or elastic band etc but I never change the body . I have one pattern for woven fabric and one for knit fabric . It saves a lot of time in change rooms .
Phyllis, I'm in awe of all of you who have created patterns that fit. It's really quite the process. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for sharing your pants fitting journey Janine! It is the frustration of so many sewists. Love your “Stampede” Rhapsody 😊
Thank you so much, Donna! I hope this encourages people to give it a try with even an old sheet.
Pants can be such a tangle, and while I’m happy with what I’ve got if I were to need to completely do it over again, I’d try this. Thanks Janine, your Stampede shirt is adorable 😊
Congratulations for having a pants pattern that works for you! It's a true accomplishment 👏🏻. And thanks for the nice words about my Stampede shirt!
Your pants are great!!! It is refreshing to hear about straightforward methods, thank you for sharing! 🌟
Thank you, La Vonda!
Thank you so much for sharing 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 I’m also serious about perfecting pants. I’m a petite type so it’s not easy to find a pattern that fits well on me. So helpful your video! 👏👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! I've just made another pair of pants using the same process and the video is being posted tomorrow (March 24, 2024). There is an excellent series of videos posted by The Crooked Hem. Her videos are a lot better than mine and have much more detail and may be helpful to you.

Thank you so much for your reply. ❤❤
Congrats on your success. I had read the article and Ruth said her method was good for everyone, but not for those of us with asymmetric bodies since fitting one side of the body won't work for the other side. Hope you are feeling better! Keep those pant videos coming.
Thank you, Mary! I suppose this could be more difficult for those with asymmetrical bodies. Could you make a full toile instead of a half toile? Ruth would certainly be the one to know, and I will bet that she's working on something to make it work for every body. 💐
@@JanineSews I had the fortune to live close enough to Sarah Veblen that she fitted the Eureka pants pattern on me. My backside benefited from the back princess seam. I continue to read all pant-fitting articles because I know how difficult it was for me to find a pattern that fit before I found Sarah. I would love to try Ruth's method, but don't have the time (too much fabric, not enough time, and alterations for other women as well!). I know the feeling when a pattern finally fits, so I am happy for you to have found one thanks to Ruth.
I love the top you're wearing with the cowboy boots! I was able to watch some of the Calgary Stampede on RFD TV and enjoyed it very much. Horseback riding is my main passion and sewing is second! Thank you so much for your review of this pants fitting method. One of my sewing goals for this winter is to work on pants fitting but honestly have been afraid to try because I'm thinking it would be too frustrating and time consuming. After seeing your excitement with your pants I'm encouraged to give it a try! The blue pants seem to fit you very well with the slimmer cut. Glad you're better and I always look forward to watching your channel. Can't wait to see another pair of great fitting pants!
Thank you, Connie! Another horse lover! I rode horses when I was younger and always wanted to either barrel race or be an outrider for the Chuckwagon races.
I hope you have good results with this method. Fall and winter sound like the perfect time to give this a try. 💐
Just found your channel. Thanks for this review. Ready to try this method, and I appreciate the encouragement!
Thank you for watching, Janie! You can do it!!!!
RickRack is one of my favvvvourite shops! I'm coming out to Alberta in a couple of weeks!
They have some nice stuff right now ... they're collecting coats over the next couple of weeks so I guess that means I have to go down there to drop off a coat, and maybe take a look at the fabric - hahahaha
Thank you so much for this video. I have hesitated doing this because of the nightmare other methods have been for me. After watching Jen Stern and you, I am so inspired to try this now.
Lorraine, I've just watched Jen's video and she gives such excellent instructions. I hope you give it a try!
I love the denim pants!
Wow your enthusiasm for this method to fit pants is awesome. I live in a small town and the grocery store doesn't carry Threads. My daughter is in Winnipeg for the week so I immediately sent her a message to look for it out there. I like both pairs of pants you made but I think the blue ones are more flattering. Do you think this method would work for jeans?I have grumbled to my husband for the past 2 years that most of my clothes are too small. Yesterday I decided to start eating better, no sugar, and to do form of exercise everyday. I'm glad you are feeling better. I am one of four people out of 18 that I work with who haven't caught covid. I look forward to seeing more pants that you have made. Stay healthy and happy sewing.
Jennett, I almost felt a bit silly because I'm so enthusiastic but YOU KNOW how it is trying to fit pants! I hope your daughter can find an issue for you in Winnipeg.
Are you on Instagram? Ruth Collins posted info on jeans today. It sounded like she doesn't often recommend jeans because of the yoke but there are plenty of people who are making them with this method. It just takes an additional step.
💐
I cant wait to use this method the next time I make a pair of pants. This has been the most difficult item for me to get right when sewing pants.
Helen, I hope this method works for you! There are more resources available now - seems to have been a huge burst of interest in the last month! Jen Stern, a designer and sewing instructor, posted a video this past week with lots of good detail: th-cam.com/video/3Xuo1yrF5nw/w-d-xo.html
What a great review of the fitting method Janine, thank you! Your enthusiasm is inspiring! So glad you had good results. It is on my to do list.💕
Thank you, Donna!
i love both pairs of pants..........i m gonna give this a try
Both pair of pants look great but I like the fit of the second pair the best. They are very slimming.
Thank you, Gloria! I like those, too. Thinking I’ll wear them to work tomorrow. 💕
OMG I have been so frustrated as well trying to make pants to fit. The funny thing is the local fabric store owner is friends with Ruth, and I live in the Ithaca area. I just don't have much to do with Instragram where everyone is talking about the TDCO method, so wasn't aware of the method. Thanks for your input!
Wow - what a lucky thing for you! Ruth is very generous with her guidance so maybe you can connect with her? If you want to check out TH-cam videos, The Crooked Hem has an excellent series that Ruth has referred to.

Your pants look amazing!
Thank you!
I would love to try this method on the pants in the "Ahead of the curve" book. I haven't sew or wear pants in more than 12 years and my body changed a lot. But I do want to give it a go, because pants is so much more comfortable since we moved to Ireland. Thanks for the review.
Ilna, I hope you will try! The pants in Ahead of the Curve were on my list, too. Please let me know how you do!
I know Cashmerrette patterns are known to be well drafted.
@@CovidIsVascular My experience has been that they are well drafted. All the marks are there and everything lines up 🙂
Thank you. I need to try this.
You’re welcome 😊
Really enjoyed this vlog Janine, but then I enjoy all your vlogs. You have such a relaxing style that is really calming in these crazy times.
Sorry you have been poorly', hope by now you are fully recovered.
Your Rhapsody Blouse is great, the embroidery is a nice feature. Ive made 6 or 7 Rhapsody's now. Lol.
I'm intrigued with the Top Down method, I've struggled with trousers so I will try to find that magazine. Not sure its available in the Uk. But I would love to have a go.
Take care and Happy Sewing x
Linda, thank you so much for watching my videos! I sometimes hear myself talk and think that I'm so sllloooww but that's just how I am 😁 I'm looking for some cream coloured gauze to make another Rhapsody. I'll be in the UK in September so maybe I'll get lucky there. Let me know if you can't find the magazine and I'll see if I can buy one here and pop it in the post when I'm over.
Thank so much.. I have a body of à 63 year old... stomach... no but wide wanted so think ill try this method ive been quilting and making aorons and oven mitts. But ilk try this out and attempt to make your tank top and maybe pants thanks uou so much. And I have subscribed to your channel. . Hugs.
Thank you, Ginette! I totally understand the challenges of a 'mature' body. This method seems to be made for people like us! I wish you great success in making something for YOU!
Your pants look amazing! Thank you for doing such a thorough review of the method. I'm just about to start fitting a pair of pants using this method and now I'm even keener than ever to get stuck in! 🙂
Thank you, Kelley! Have you tried TDCO? The Crooked Hem here on TH-cam has a bunch of videos walking through the method and I've heard they are just excellent!
I am going to try this! Thank you for sharing! They both look so nice on you. Happy you are feeling better!
Thank you so much for this excellent video. I have watched yours and Stacey's on The crooked Hem on TH-cam, Instagram and blog of the same title.
I can't wait to try it and see how it deals with my wonky hip.
Thank you again and and I hope you'll be back in full health very soon.🌷
Kerstin, please let me know how you do with your pants!!
I just bought that Thread magazine at Joann Fabrics just the other day. I will have to try her method as I have problems with the back crotch length being too short. I always have to extend the crotch point out a lot.
Yay!!! I am so happy that you tried Ruth's process. I was in the middle of fitting the old-fashioned way when she first hit the 'Gram with this method, so I wasn't able to use it from inception, but I had documented all of the changes I had made to my series of 6(SIX!) toiles. I went back to toile #2, tweaked two bits, turned the legs into each other and saw where I needed a tiny bit of back length, and voila! Amazing Fit pants! You expressed so well that feeling of utter relief and confidence that comes with success, and you're right, it IS logical engineering at its core. BTW, I think she's dabbling in sleeves and armsceyes next! I used Simplicity 2860, another Amazing Fit pattern, that may be out of print. It has a fly zipper, a contoured waistband, and sits 1 1/2" below the waist. I raised mine so that the upper edge hit where I wanted it to, and I was able to complete the fitting that way. I hate straight waistbands unless they're elastic in the back. And thanks for honestly reviewing S8744; I'll avoid that one!
Tina, thank you so much for sharing your process Six (!) toiles sounds like a LOT of work and frustration but I'm so glad you wound up with something that you really love. That's a huge accomplishment!
I just took a look at Simplicity 2860. That really looks like exactly what I want. It's so similar to my RTW pants from Talbots. Will see if I can find a copy online somewhere.
I really appreciate you watching and sharing your process. It's good to know that it's all worthwhile and it's possible to sew something with an amazing fit! 🌷
Omg Janine I can’t thank you enough for this review. I just read that same article a few days ago( when I too was unwell)!! I sew a lot but quit making clothes for myself years ago due to things not fitting properly. Especially PANTS!! I’ll be sixty-five in a couple weeks. I’m gonna try this method too. Thanks again and God Bless you!!!!🤗
Kathy, I hope you're feeling better! 💐
Have you had a chance to try making some pants? I've just made my third pair and am still happy with the method and relieved to have found something that works!!
This was informative, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed its Aribella!
Thank you for this video of a new method to me for fitting pants. I will make just about anything else (pouf, doggy rain jacket) before pants. I’m going to try it!! Thanks 😊
Thanks, Jean! Doggy rain jackets are fun but it's way more fun to make stuff for ourselves!!! I think it's a great method and every day there seems to be more information out there to guide us. 😊
This is so helpful Janine... I've been seeing this method on IG and thinking it might work for me and get me over my pants anxiety!
Lori, HI - and thanks so much!
Thank you Janine, super helpful. 👌💕
Wonderful! So glad I found your channel.
The way I have been fitting in the past was to fit the front maintaining the straight-of-grain and any darts, etc. then for the back I basically did the same but left the back seam with extra fabric for any main fitting. My waist band was two pieces in the back to allow for any of those back seam fitting issues. This method was...okay...but I really want to try this 'new' method. You see, my aging body too doesn't fit the ready-to-wear as I have issues including a spinal scoliosis that makes one pant leg longer at the side seam than the other.
I am so tired of having to 'reef-up' my pants at the back after I sit down. I like pants that fit at the waist because they hang better (from my point of view) so I am anxious to try this method for sewing pants.
I absolutely hate trying on pants in the store and really want to have a sloper I can use that I don't have to 'mess' with for fitting...cut and sew and go.
(I used to live in Calgary and went to the Stampede every year.)
It sounds like your method is very similar to the one Ruth describes. Someone on Instagram asked her about the challenges of fitting when your body is not symmetrical (although none of us are perfectly symmetrical) and I believe she said that you would have to work with a full toile. It adds a bit more time to the process but I think we would all agree that a well fitting pair of pants is worth the extra time! Gosh, well fitting pants seems like a dream sometimes, doesn't it?
Fellow Calgarian, I send you a big old Yahoo! 🤠
I can't wait to try this method! Love your pants and that Kersoe tank! I have the "Ahead of the Curve" book and am definitely going to make that tank!😊❤️👍
Thanks! The tank is a fast make. Don’t you love quick sews?
Blue pants look great on you!
Thank you!
Wow! Thank you, Janine! This review is so encouraging! I will need new pants in the fall and was not looking forward to the fitting experiment. I have that issue of Threads and glanced over the article and flagged it for an in depth read. I am focusing on bras/ foundation (International Bra Sewing Bee starts Thursday! Online) so this will be the follow up focus. Also- you sound great. I’m glad you recovered quickly. :).
Thanks, Debbie! I was truly so thrilled when I got some pants to fit reasonably well.
I’m not ready to fit bras yet. Next year 😁
The recovery has been slow. On Day 17 now but improved by leaps and bounds this weekend. 💕
Thank you for a great video! I'm very encouraged by your enthusiasm to try out the TDCO method 😀
Thank you! I hope you give it a try and have good results.
Wow that sounds so good. I love the idea that you decide where the waistband will go.
It's great to have that option, isn't it? We don't have that in RTW so we will make our own perfect pants! 😊
Janine, I could not agree with you more. Ruth has nailed it with this method! I just sewed the hook & eye on the waistband of a pair I completed today using her method. I was actually moved to happy tears when I tried them on because it’s been forever since I made pants that fit, really fit, with so little drama!
Thanks for sharing this method on your video, you explained it so well! Hopefully this will inspire more people to give it a try.
Stephanie, I'm so glad you had the same happy result! Isn't it a relief to know that you can DO this and not have to rely on the depressing fitting room experience? Do you want to start another pair RIGHT NOW? 😁
Yes! I now see more pants-making in my future. I’ve been plotting & planning all day while doing chores. Ideas are swirling! ☺️
I am so happy I found your channel. Your journey with creating a wardrobe for where you are in your life now really resonates with me. I am on the same journey and excited I've found a channel that sews for a figure like mine. Thank you and I look forward to more of your content!
Thank you, Sharon! I’m happy to meet you! 🌸
Your enthusiasm has made me want to jump into this. I've sewed only looooose elastic waist in the past two years or more. Onto the linen closet to recycle some sheets!
Julie, I want to hear all about your pants! 😃
So happy I've found your channel thanks to Jennifer Stern of J Stern Designs for the recommendation to view your channel. You have encouraged me to try the TDCO method of pants fitting and I love your cowboy boots shirt.
Awesome! Thank you, Diane!
Those pants looks fab! Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome, Marion! Thank you for watching!
Janine this was SO interesting. I would say my figure is very similar to yours and I've had some disasters! I have found the Ames Jeans and the pants from the Ahead of the Curve book (Cashmerette) have been the best. Not sure I can get Threads magazine here but I shall take a look. Thanks!
Love Cashmerette for my curvy figure.
Thank you so much! Someone told me that the pants in the Cashmerette book didn't work out well so I really appreciate you sharing your good experience. I would like to try them because they're simple and I think that they would be stylish in a fun fabric for autumn or winter - maybe in a small check.
If you can't find Threads in a magazine shop you should be able to get the article on line.
Thanks so much for watching! 💐
65 and I am shaped like a pregnant brick...I would love to sew pants that fit! Gotta try this.
Oh never heard of this method of pant fitting before - it makes so much sense! I will definitely give that a go. 🤩
I have some I want to make for this Autumn/Winter.
Wonderful! I hope you will let us know how it goes!
Great review. I've seen that article and will go back and review. I hate making pants. Glad you feel better.
Thanks, Donna! I didn't really pay attention until I started seeing it mentioned on Instagram and then it hit me - I HAVE that edition of Threads! 🤣
I struggle to get pants to fit. I've drafted my own pants but I am going to give this a try .
Good for you! It takes tremendous skill to draft anything so well done!!
I’m a new subscriber here today on Friday. Also somewhat new to sewing. I finally got a pair of pants to fit from crotch up after so so much work. I’m 68 and have all those problems you talk about & no one to help. My biggest problem is wide hips, tummy, and legs slim down. Store bought pants and pants I sew from crotch down looks like sails from a sailboat. I’m going to rush out & get that magazine. Making pants by yourself is a real booger so I’m hoping this is the answer. I made my first shift type of dress and being first time it’s not perfect either but with sweater or jacket it will be fine. It’s a learning process and I know what to fix on pattern.
Hi Victoria! Thanks so much for watching my channel!
I have not been sewing that long (about 6 years) and I wear the shift dress that was the first garment I had sewn in over 30 years. It's not perfect either, but it is fine and it is so rewarding to wear something you have made for yourself. I know your sewing will improve! It truly just takes a bit of practice so you gain some confidence and then sewing one row at a time. Hope to see you again soon!
I am going to have to figure out where to get that magazine! Glad you are feeling better and super happy with how you used your alone time 😁. Your Rhapsody is perfect for Stampede. I can totally picture it with jeans and western boots.
Thanks, Nancy! Yup - that’s definitely a jeans and boots top! 🤠 Maybe you can order the magazine from Threads?
You can read it online when you become an ‘Insider’ member of the Threads website.
The Ontario online library system offers this magazine free. See if your library system does too!
@@cvan1075 thanks I will definitely check that out 😉
Thanks, Janine. I just have gotten out my Threads issue that I got this summer and hadn’t gotten around to reading yet. I am now making some McCalls cropped pants with an elastic waist out of a linen blend that I got awhile ago and made the first ones a little too big. They are wearable now, but if I lose a little weight they might just fall right down. I have started another pair and I’m making them a little smaller and keeping my fingers crossed. When I’m finished with them I will try making some pants for fall using this new method. I have high hopes that this will work well.
Lynn, hope your second pair of pants fits the way you want!
I've just made my third pair of pants using this method and am still very happy with it. Please let me know how you make out!
Great review! Thanks! 🎉
Super! Love the review. Thanks for showing results.
Thank you, Rachel!
Thanks for sharing!! I’m looking forward to giving “top down center out” a try!! 😊
Thank you for watching, Ruth! I hope you will try and also that you have a great experience.
Good insights especially when i love wearing pants myself and only stick to elasticized either partially or full. Going to try to get hold of magazine. Thanks and pants look great 👍
Thank you, Cindy! I hope you can find the magazine. If not, you might be able to get the instructions online at Threads Magazine. They seem to have every article there, although some might be behind a paywall.
The Crooked Hem on TH-cam has an excellent detailed explanation of this method if you learn better by watching.
Thank you! I’ve heard really good things about that series.
Excited for that Magazine issue to arrive in New Zealand- a few weeks away still!
Gillian, I hope it arrives on time so you can start making some things for Spring!
This was great information. Thanks!
Thank you!
Love love your video - so helpful and entertaining ♥️
Thanks so much!
That fit is amazing! and the 'hang' looks so good. Great video Thanks :)
Thank you! 😊 That is really the thing I noticed right away. It will be interesting to see how it goes with something more close fitting but for now, I'm not embarrassed to wear these - 😆
I really want to try this method. Great review
Thanks! There is a lot of good information in Jen Stern's TH-cam video. You might find that helpful!
Thankyou Janine for sharing...so inspiring...am definitely going to do this
You are so welcome, Christine!
Do you think this method will work with jeans? Since retirement, I love wearing them at home & grocery store. Enjoyed your video. Thank you for bringing this to our attention...Books A Millon tomorrow, hope they still this issue of threads.
Joy, I have seen some really nice jeans made using this method. In reading the comments from the folks who made jeans, it's a bit more complex because of the yoke and closer fit but certainly nothing that can't be worked through with a bit of patience! If I ever try jeans, I'll probably start with a relatively simple pattern and work my way up from there.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for this video. It makes me much more confident that I can have successful pants too. I bought Jenny Rushmore's book also, and I'm glad to see you made one of the patterns so far. I'm looking forward to putting more dresses in my wardrobe.
Thank you, Linda! If I can make pants that fit, anyone can 🙌.
Janine, you explained the method very well. I think I get it and am definitely going to look into trying that method. Both pair you made look great. Isn't it great to find a solution to the fit issue?? I watch all kinds of pattern adjustments but they make me wonder if it's worth the struggle to make my clothes at all. I hope I achieve the success you have. Love the top too. Happy sewing.
Thank you, Kathy! I think that many of us were a bit unbelieving when we heard that there was a "simple" way to fit pants. I hope you give this method a try!
Those linen pants look GREAT on you! Do you think the top down center out method would work for me? I have an extreme hourglass figure: 33-inch waist and 45.5-inch hips. I can never find pants that fit my waist if they fit my hips and big ol' thighs, so I always feel like I am sitting in a barrel. Please advise me. Thank you for this awesome video. I can't wait to watch the second part of your video with the narrower fitting slacks.
Thank you for your nice words 😊 Because I'm not at all an hourglass, I can't give you a definitive answer however, Stacy from the Crooked Hem has done a very good series on Top Down Center Out and a lot of people say it is incredibly helpful. In particular, she talks about selecting a size and the waistband. Perhaps her videos will help you? th-cam.com/channels/sJ4xDmOeVrVwXg69r8Fs6Q.htmlvideos
@@JanineSews Thank you!
Thank you! But how do you determine what marks are made on the sample? That is confusing. I'll look for the other woman's youtube. Love your enthusiasm. 😊
On my muslin pieces, I mark the cutting line for the size (or sizes) that I think will work. For example, if I think that an 18 and a 20 are the best size choices, I mark those sizes using a sharpie. And I'll make a note beside each line because sometimes I forget what sizes I chose (lol). Then I cut the fabric larger on the top and the outside. On the top, I add two inches, and on the side, I make the seam allowance an inch. I also mark the lengthen/shorten lines on every piece, and I mark the grainline (although that's not necessary).
I construct the waistband and run a line of stitches along the seam line where the pants are to be attached to the waistband. This gives me a good guideline for when I'm pinning the pants to the waistband.
The Crooked Hem has a really good series and she does a much better job of explaining than I do!
@JanineSews thank you! The part that is missing is the steps AFTER the leg is hung on the waist band. What is the technique to mark the actions taken on the toile to manipulate it into fitting one's body? (So that THE ADJUSTMENT ACTIONS can be remembered later when transferring them on to a real pattern?
@@GailDulay Here's what I do (although others likely do it differently). Hope this helps!
• Once I'm happy with the pinned adjustments, I stitch those seam lines using a long stitch and again try on the garment to ensure that everything is correct. Sometimes I make more tweaks at this time.
• Then I take my Sharpie and mark the stitching lines on the muslin fabric. It helps to have a different coloured Sharpie or pen for this step.
• After the stitching lines are drawn, I use a ruler to add the seam allowances using whatever seam allowance the pattern calls for (to ensure consistency). I have a couple of seam allowance rulers, a 5/8" one from StitchBuzz.com, and one in metric from JennHogg.co.uk. They make it much faster to mark the seam allowances but you could also use your seam gauge.
• Then I cut the muslin pieces along the seam allowance lines and use those muslin pieces as my new pattern pieces for the waistband, front, and back.
Loved your presentation. I’m very inspired to try the top down method. I always learn from your reviews on Pattern Review. Wonder if you could use this method the next time you make an outfit for your cat? Crabtree
HAHAHAHA. There might be a cottage industry there 😁🤣
Great review of this method! I’ve been thinking of trying this for a couple months. My question is about the mirrors. Can they be at 90-degree angles? And do they have to be full-length? How were yours situated? Thanks in advance!
Thank you, Linda! I used the mirrors in my bathroom. They are not full-length, just counter height but I just stood far enough away to get a good view down my leg. I do have a single mirror on the other wall although it's a bit angled so if I stood in the right place I could see the back without having to turn my body. When I wanted to check the length I went to the one full-length mirror in the house and I used a handheld mirror to check the back. Where there's a will! 😁
@@JanineSews You can also use your camera in selfie mode as your "second mirror."
Hi. New viewer here. I’ve been wondering if I could use quilting cotton for the Rhapsody, so I’m glad to know that you managed it.
Thank you for watching! Quilting cotton worked! And I liked using the pre-made bias tape because it had such a lovely crisp press.
I can't find a suitable pants pattern to use with TDCO pants. I want straight waistband, straight/wide legs, and front zip.
Hmmmm. Have you looked at Vogue 9181? I used that pattern a couple of years ago and made 2 pairs of pants (stretch bottom weight and narrow corduroy). I wouldn't say that the legs are super wide but they are bootcut and not at all narrow through the thighs.
Here's a link to the video with the cords: th-cam.com/video/XRl6cUL00CE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dMNmIDNlvOMpO6Cz
Let me know if you need other ideas and I'll see what I can find.
Janine, what a stampede? I’m in the UK!!
Mary, that's the Calgary Stampede. It's our annual rodeo, agricultural show and fair with funfair and rides. It's pretty big - 10 days and over 1.2 million visitors. The whole city pretty much stops for the entire 10-days. Businesses have lunches or evening parties for their staff, there are free pancake breakfasts all over the city, and it's just a very fun time. We had a lot of visitors from the U.K. this year!
Hello Janine. I was wondering if, when you made the Kersoe, you trimmed the armhole seam allowance? The instructions say to trim the neckline SA but not the armhole SA. I got the pattern after seeing your video. Thanks.
Hi! In my version of the book it says to trim 1/16” on both neck edge and armscyes on the lining. I probably trimmed a smidge more. I wonder if it would possibly pull a bit if just the neck opening was trimmed?
