  • Fresh off of a reorganization (March 2020), I thought I'd show you around my "Fortress of Synthetude" - also known as the "Temple of Boom." Whatever. This is the room I wanted when I was a teenager - it only took 35 years to achieve. Hang in there, kids.

    Great video Jim. Love the tour. I subscribed right away. I understand the "This is the room I wanted when I was a teenager," comment as my set up is that for me. I think I'm a bit more earlier 80's late 70's where as you're more mid 80's with your choices. I love your set up though. Kudos.

      @JimDaneker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JimDaneker it's amazing how 5 years can make slight differences in the sounds that attract a person. I was born in 68 so my preferences in sonics actually reflects in the equipment that I choose and the equipment that you choose by 5 years (CS10, SK30 instead of the DX range) although there is also overlap (having a Hammond organ is a must).

    Loved the tour. My studio (if one can call it that) is a far more humble setup. I would love to know what kind of music you make, and which equipment do you see as absolutely essential to doing your job. Do you find yourself gravitating towards certain items more than others?

    • @JimDaneker
      @JimDaneker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks my friend! I do all kinds of stuff, but it tends to be very cinematic, synth-heavy pop overall. I did an epic instrumental album called AD ALTA you can check out on iTunes - and also recently a new epic pop single called '32' - you can find videos on my channel or music on iTunes.
      As for gear, the hardware synths are great to have but you could do tons of great stuff with just a laptop and some great plugins like Omnisphere or Nexus. It's a never ending wish list, but that doesn't mean it's necessary! ;-)

  • @olivierjalet

    Hi, Jim ! Thanks a lot for the studio tour. What are the little keyboard under the montage and the keyboard right above the Prophet ? Thanks for your answer. Olivier from France.

    • @JimDaneker
      @JimDaneker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, thanks for asking! The little one under the Montage was my first synth - a Yamaha PSR-460 from 1986. It's essentially a baby DX7 with a handful of presets, and a really cool feature - 6 sliders that let you edit sounds in realtime. I keep meaning to sample it! The one above the Prophet is an Arturia Keylab 49 controller - I use it on the road for programming. Cheers!

    You might want to check out Gig Performer. It walks all over Mains Stage.
    We've been touring with it for over a year and it's never failed. VERY powerful.
    Nice to see some of the old favourites, D50, TX816 etc, plus modern versions of JP8, MiniMoog, Prophet etc.
    What Leslie FX do you use for your Hammond?

    • @JimDaneker
      @JimDaneker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tryptychUK Thanks! Gig Performer has some great features and is lighter on CPU with some 3rd party instruments, but sadly it can’t use the Logic/MS EXS sampler or plugins, which are more efficient than anything I’ve ever seen or tested. Plus I‘ve created a MASSIVE amount of custom content for it, and it allows a degree of custom control you can’t find anywhere else. Both great for different things, for sure! As for Leslie, when I can’t use my real 147, I have a custom MainStage channel strip that uses their Leslie plugin and a custom impulse response to put it in a virtual room... best virtual Leslie I’ve ever heard. There’s a demo of it on my channel if you’d like to hear it ;-)

    • @TryptychUK
      @TryptychUK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JimDaneker Hi Jim, thanks for the response. I can understand why you would not wish to switch when you have invested so much into a operational system. As for samplers, I use NI Kontakt which works perfectly, even with massive libraries. GP's biggest problem is slow load times, but this is outweighed by the fact it will not glitch or hang MIDI notes between patches. It also demands BIG slabs of RAM if you use a lot of patches. As for Hammond, I use the Arturia B3 alongside the IK Amplitube Leslie emulation as I find it superior, and it also allows me to add other distortion effects into the chain, such as a Big Muff. The JP-X looks interesting as I used to own a Jupiter-8 - Is this just a hardware version of Roland's VST's, or is it closer to the original? I found their virtual emulations to be somewhat lacking that "balls" against the originals, notably the D50, (I have a D550).

    • @JimDaneker
      @JimDaneker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TryptychUK Yes indeed - if I were using all my 3rd party stuff (especially Kontakt libraries), then Gig Performer would be ideal. When I'm at home in the studio, I don't have any need for MainStage - it's a whole different deal. When I'm working on bigger scoring projects, then it's almost exclusively big Kontakt libraries, some East West Play, Omnisphere, etc.
      As for the Jupiter X, it's really like an anthology of their big hits - Jupiter 8, Juno 106, SH101, XV5080, vintage drum machines, etc. And they all sound utterly stunning. There are several youtube videos of it being A/B'd against the originals, and it's ridiculous how close they sound. My "itch" for those pieces has been scratched! If you just wanted a Jupiter 8/Juno 106, then their System 8 is a killer option too - the models in that one might even be a hair closer to the originals as the modeling tech goes even deeper!

      @TryptychUK 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JimDaneker I was referring to using Gig Performer in a live situation. I find using virtual synths far easier than having to lug a bunch of keyboards and racks on stage like I did for many years, (particularly things like Hammonds, Mellotrons and Fairlights!) As for orchestral samples, you should check out Spitfire Audio, truly the best around, particularly Albion.
      The thought was the JP-X might have the same but more, and frankly I don't really need yet another TR808, I have a million.
      I guess if I was that desperate for the sound, I would buy another original JP8, but there would be many others I would probably buy first (Oberheim OBX for instance.)

    • @JimDaneker
      @JimDaneker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      kruzin100 They’re pretty decent, but I’m not sure I’d use them as main monitors. I actually do like the low end on the Eris 8’s, and they’re pretty “warm” sounding - but they’re very dark monitors overall, and the sweet spot is really small. That said, I have a pair at each of my side synth stations and I like them for that!

    What are your thoughts on the Yamaha Montage, is it comparable in sounds to the new Fantom? Thanks!

    • @JimDaneker
      @JimDaneker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are very comparable. Both are absolutely top-notch, and cover a ridiculously wide range of sounds. The Fantom is more of a workstation though, where the Montage is more of a live performance synth. The Montage is a bit more complicated to program, but the rewards are worth it... it can do some types of sounds that the Fantom can’t: motion-oriented sequences patches with multiple layers, etc. It also has a legit DX engine in it. They’re both killer machines!

      Thanks Steven. I've used Logic since 1993 (27 years?!?) and definitely have done my share of scoring projects with it. And while no DAW is perfect, it is perfect for the way I like to work. It's also the most efficient I've seen when it comes to virtual instruments! At the end of the day though, most of it comes down to personal preference and what you're used to ;-)

    Just as I ended up never getting a Roland JX series synth as I couldn't choose between JX3P, MKS30 or MKS70 for different reasons, I'm now struggling to choose between the Integra 7 rack & the system 8, or the JDXA or even the mono but semi modular system 1. Money plus both rack and keyboard real estate in my small but crowded studio are all considerations. Have you any thought of recommendations on this multi dimensional dilemma?
