    Alex, never underestimate the value of viewing a property on a rainy day. That's always the best time to find any leaks and other adverse water problems. When you view properties on fine days, often these things aren't detected until after you move in and the first rain hits. Just remember, most of NZ, compared to many places, has high rainfall, (hence, the reason why the country is so green), so water issues are something you need to heed on a constant basis. Good luck with your house hunting.

    I'm a kiwi in San Francisco, my house is in Kaiti I so look forward to getting back. The guy that wrote the tv series Flipper retired to Wainui Beach Gisborne, says it reminded him of Malibu in the 50's. Gisborne has awesome wine, try Vinoptima Gewurtztraminer and Milton Syrah which has a touch of eucalyptus from the trees that grow next to the vines

    Other great coastlines for surf, as well as idyllic calm spots and spectacular scenery include many beaches up northland way (so perfect in summer - much more further up than just maungawhai or tawharanui/omaha/goat island) (smaller towns though except for whangarei), and the coromandel. I hear New Plymouth is good too. Abel tasman has some of the best coastline around too, but less in the way of surf. For the truly primeval, you need to get all along the west coast of the south island - from the perfect sandy beaches with nikau palms and great surf by the heaphy track and the opua arches in kahurangi national forest, all the way down through westland (another national park), punakaiki and through to fiordland (another). It's just filled with giant 1000 plus year old great endemic (native to only NZ) podocarp forest as well as NZ Beech forest, the surf is wild and you need a thicker wetsuit, and the places are far more isolated. The hikes and lakes and mountains through all this giant forest is spectacular (and things like kayaking and lodges about are wonders to stay at). I hope you get there some day. I know you've been to a part of fiordland (lots more there than just milford), but the entire west is just as exciting if sometimes less accessible.

    • @AlexanderAyling
      @AlexanderAyling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Tom!! We’ve got plenty more to explore :)

    • @Tom_McMurtry
      @Tom_McMurtry 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexanderAyling for sure! And much more than mentioned aside from those surf spots! Close to where you are, the te urewera ranges (national park) with it's massive forests, great walk, and lakes is a stunner. Whirinaki forest is probably the most accessible awe inspiring podocarp forest you'll find that lets you know what's out there in the deeper bush. It's fairly well trapped to, so there's a bunch of native birds in abundence that are usually hard to.find and very melodius in their collective calls. The kaka are pretty playful to play with too. Good luck finding those other natural hotsprings and secret spots out there in rotorua and such too.
