      If not overdone, percussive maintanance can be very effective for fault finding.
      About 10 years ago I gave my father a broomstick as a had no time to fix his TV. He used it for weeks like that. It was a second "remote control". When the vertical deflection went out, he slammed the TV on its side with the broomstick, and it was good for a few hours. Fortunatelly the connection never failed while he was in the bathroom or smoking outside, otherwise a nasty black line could have burnt into the CRT. Finally I fixed the TV, and we still have it in storage.

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sony sorta did it, but they did it differently. On their receivers from at least the early 90s They cut the panel out, then flipped it over, and it screwed in. They did not do the cut the tabs thing. I also found an older 80s Sony str vx1 where literally The whole bottom panel was screwed in. (have not figured that one out yet, the right channel on both speakers A and B sound like it is farting, I switched the speakers around and ruled those out. It uses a Sanyo stk460 amplifier IC.) This is one of the reasons why I don’t really like more modern surround sound receivers without those service panels. (Onkyo, Yamaha, ETC.)

    No a brilliant design for a bottom plate is to put an access plate pre-screwed onto the chassis. Which meant it could be removed via screws and put back with screws that already exist on the unit. Not have to find screws to fix a plate back onto the unit. Now that’s a brilliant design.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those 4 screws cost money. They take an extra step to attach. This adds to cost especially if it meant having 1 extra worker on assembly line who's only existence on earth was putting that bottom cover on. Since the majority of these probably never needed service and they were made at a time when there were service techs everywhere this cost cutting measure saves the company a stack of cash and since they were generally being serviced by an engineer who doesn't mind cutting the tabs and finding spare screws. It also keeps the curious out of the bottom. With screws anyone can open it. This also provides proof for warranty that nobody has been in the bottom.

    • @23chilled
      @23chilled 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      12voltvids I agree with that. If it’s a warranty item and does give you indication if it’s had work done on it. Just as a personal thing. I like to get a screwdriver. Undeposited screws and have the plate off quicker than the kettle boils. Haha

    Hi 12volt !! Cool name 😎 So I bought a used Pioneer sxv90 in great shape cosmetically for 25 $ plus shipping. It turns on and lights up and the relay clicks. The guy sold it cuz it didn't make sound. It didn't have its preamp jumpers plugged in so I bought some but it didn't rectify then situation. The vents get warm and actually feels a bit hot to the touch. I had this same stereo as a 14 year old kid in the 80s. It was my 1st stereo. I'm popping the tip on it today to check the fuses. When I press the speaker select A & B I can hear a slight audio pop so it's wanting to play sound just not doing it yet. I thought I'd ask u where I should start

      Plug an open cord into the main in and turn it on. Touch the top of the connector. Do you hear it hum? If so the power amp is working. The problem is in preamp. If no him then the power amp has a problem. You can plug the preamp our into another amp to see if it is outputting a signal.

      There. Plug an open rca audio cord into the input and touch the tip. You should hear a hum out the speaker if the power amp is working. This is called isolating the fault so you know where to start looking.
