Hi I am a production designer in the film industry and I do a lot of mask designs and am constantly looking for cool eye making techniques. I have to say this was by far the best video I have seen on the topic. The length put me off at first, since I thought it would be pretty repetitive with someone just jabbering on, but all the information you past along in a fresh and insightful way. I am glad I said what the hell I have time to kill and clicked on it anyway. I also want to agree with you for other artists out there that give up cause they think there work is not good, well it isn't and that's OK cause even practiced artists work stinks most of the time. It takes years sometimes to produce something that is grand and even then you will find fault with it. Just don't give up you will create a masterpiece one day. And all the struggle is worth it. It doesn't mean anything if it is easy, art is about the power of emotion and the struggle to bring it out! Stanley Kubrick once said, "In the end, the test of a work of art, is our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good." Thank you so much for your awesome video and keep making costumes!
Peter Spawn wow, thanks Peter! I'm really glad my video was worth the watch :) thanks for watching, and have an excellent day!
I agree with Peter about the length. Yvonne, you have a wonderfully descriptive manner of speaking as you are crafting your masterpieces. We will keep watching.
Peter Spawn I to was put off by the length of this video but got to agree it was well worth watching.
I confess kept skipping forwards after she'd explained each new technique...
You should hire her!
I have been using this exact method for about 7 years now and it really works well, It's nice to see someone else doing this using nail varnish too and doing the whole scratching/scraping technique, it produces such a great dimensional finish and you explain it really well, it's funny that I own more nail varnish than any woman I know (I'm male) and people laugh when I tell them that, but are really surprised when I show them what can be achieved. I make mine in pairs as I make them for puppets, but I mark off the very center with an adhesive plastic disk and finish with the pupil, sometimes I will add a few layers of clear nail varnish to the center before the black just to give it a little more depth!! great tutorial!!
Ben allforGod right on! excellent tips, too!
Do you ever bake your dragon eyes in polymer clay ?.. on some of mine the colors completely changed ( from red to yellow) and some the colors disappeared all together have you ever had this happen?
Hi! Really enjoyed the tutorial. If, and when, I would like to ask you where to find Small, flat back, clear, oval carbachons. What I found on line doesn’t seem to match those criteria. Thx
Very wonderful tutorial Yvonne!! Nice that you took the time to do the entire eye step by step, instead of others who jump steps & fast forward through steps. I love the finished product & will definitely make one/some. Thanks Yvonne.
That was so cool. I wasn't sure if wanted to watch a 42min video about something I wasn't particularly interested in, but it's fantastic. The end piece is beautiful - truly stunning effect, yet it seems quite doable for someone who is reasonably artistic.
Saying that, Yvonne is very talented and making something look easy doesn't mean it is easy.
Oh, and the 42 minutes flies by.
Great video.
lol, thank you so much Ian!!
+Yvonne Williams Yvonne, no problem - thank you for sharing your talents with the World. Have you ever tried to do a circular pupil? Not a dragon eye then, (because we've all seen a dragon's eye before 😄) but like a human or a cat, (although cats do transition between the two).
Ian. You took the words right out of my mouth.Very nice work Yvonne.
I'm not very artistic, but this still looks doable. I'm going to give it a shot over the summer, anyway! And yes, the 42 minutes really didn't seem that long.
I didn't realize how long the video was until it was almost done. The time flies by, and with each colour reveal, the desire to see the finished piece gets stronger. Great work!!
I once a year go to a children's institution in the north of Peru to craft with the kids, and each time struggle to find something that the older teen boys will enjoy doing. This was MAGIC, it fitted all ages from 9 up. It is always a joy to see how with the same materials the results are so unique. They were so happy and proud with their shimmering creations that I decided to write in the name of each one of them that now has a beautiful pendant to show off to REALLY thank you for sharing your know-how with this tutorial. Bless you.
wow, this is so cool!!!
You know in Peru they buy those eyes to put atound their house an doors to keep the evil out. They are called evil eyes. I saw a documentary on it. Its widely used an the gift store have lots. Its a known fact that voo doo is practiced byt the eyes wart off the evil. evil eyes
@@backtoearthcreations
You have inspired someone across the world...
Yvonne, now you will be know as "World Renowned"
Very exciting...
@@rhondaroberts373 Voodoo is practiced more in the Caribbean. Almost nobody in Peru or other parts of Latinamerica practice Voodoo besides around the Caribbean.
Yvonne is not only a fabulous artist but an excellent instructor. The
Is video was an exquisite experience in all facets of artistic education. A real joy!
Thanks for the lesson now I have to figure out how to swipe my wife's nail polish 😎
hehehe :p good luck!!
I love this project and your video! I wanted a big eye so I went to Dollar Tree and bought some magnifying glasses. I took the rim off and just did my first dragon eye. It is not as beautiful as the one in the video, but it came out spectacular! I also picked up an eyeglass repair kit and use the tiny screwdrivers for scratching. They are easier for children to use too. Thank you for an amazing, fun and awesome craft!!!
These are great ideas, thank you!!
Thx for the tip.
One of the best and most detailed tutorials i have ever watched! What i like most, is your selfless sharing of the tecnique. Sadly, Most artists do not like sharing.
May you be blessed with abundance and prosperity beyond your wildest dreams!
Love the tutorial! They look amazing! If you have nail polish that doesnt have balls in it buy a box of BBs like for a BB gun. A little milk carton size is roughly 5 bucks. I would put a BB in all my nail polish. I also took baby food or mason jars and put about a half inch of BBs in the bottom. Fill it up with some water and they are wonderful for cleaning off paint brushes.
omg, this has changed my life :-O
Awesome! I am so glad to help. Ill tell ya what, Ive been watching your videos for the past couple hours. Back when I did chain mail I hand wrapped coils and tried snipping them off with wire cutters. I ended up getting discouraged because all my jump rings had V shaped cuts in them. Your videos has really gotten me wanting to resupply myself with leather and metal.
The v shaped cuts are kind of unavoidable, but if you are willing to take a little extra time, and sacrifice a little more material, you can mitigate the V. The side of the cutters that is ground will give you the deep V, and the flat side a shallow, nearly flat, V.
Start by nipping off the end of the wire with the flat side of the cutters toward the ring you are about to cut., Flip the cutters over and nip the ring off the coil. (again with the flat toward the ring) Then you flip the cutters again and nip the open end off again, and repeat for each ring. You will end up losing a bb sized nib of wire for each ring you cut off, but instead of one shallow and one deep V, you will get two shallow V's.
If you want to put in a touch more effort you can rub the edges smoother on a file. There are also bits for drills with a cup shaped end to round, or smooth, the ends. (at least there use to be. I'm out of practice)
Great tips. Thanks!
What a great tutorial!! Thanks for taking the time to film it and post it here for all of us!
You're very welcome! :)
Yvonne Williams how much money do you get fore selling these eyes? and how much would they cost?
Hey, Jessica! The eye in the tutorial sold for $40, unset, and my smaller eyes sell for a lot less. Set eyes sell for much more, depending on how ornate the setting it :)
yes it is very good video
Amazing!!!!! I was planning on skipping through and getting the basics and try to just wart hog it in five minutes, but I ended up watching the entire video and listening to every word!!! Well done!!!
Why the fuck did I watch this whole video. I don't even like arts and crafts. I just feel hypnotized, but here I am at 3 in the morning watching a video on dragon eyes.
muahahaha, its an evil conspiracy :p
Thanks for watching! :)
Me too!! And I normally watch chainsaws!
...oh
Chainsaws?!
+ChrisTNT It's the Russians.
I've watched my share of tutorials on many "How To's" and was NEVER compelled to comment..But you were Fabulous!
Your articulate, easy way of speaking made me..well..sorta happy!
I Thank You kindly, for sharing your knowledge of this particular craft. The video flows seamlessly
and easily.Thank You for the visual guide and your imagination.

I agree! I kept thinking to myself, "she has a vibe that I like. She is so chill!" ❤️ I was sent this link from FB group where I asked about "where to buy glass eyes". I am SOLD on making my own now! Thank you Yvonne!
As a fellow creative, I've watched Yvonne grow and expand her abilities. Master is the word that comes to mind. To be blunt, Yvonne, you just keep getting better at kicking ass, and taking names. Also, you have the kind of voice that's easy on my ears and your willingness to share your gifts shows a generous Spirit. You have a seasoned discerned eye for how things should be, that I love about your work Thanks for sharing.
Oh damn it... Apparently I'm making Dragon Eyes this weekend!!! Who knew?
LOL!!
Lol I was actually looking for this vid after coming across one of her others.
Hi Yvonne. I was blown away by your video for so many various reasons ranging all over the board: your honesty about why you started the dragon eyes, you sound so young yet so mature, you seem as if you are an old soul, your trials and errors that perfected your craft, the mistakes during the video, the easy no stress fixes, the comfort of your voice, you are a perfect teacher, your artistry is fantastic, the process with the rationalization was so easy to comprehend. I'm so happy that this was the first dragon diy video that I watched. Your video was perfect from start to finish. You seem to be the top of the class on dragon eyes. Thank you so very much for posting your video. Jodie (new subscriber)
You Are Just Straight Up Crafty!!!!I Love These Videos. You have helped an old disabled grandma get her muze back!!! Her name is Yvonne!!!!
Right on!!
I cannot believe that ANYONE who does crafts, would not like your tutorial - Thank you for sharing - this was AWESOME. I would like to see what you do with these Dragon Eyes.
Or dont even do crafts
Nark R
Thanks to your exquisite teaching I was able to impress my husband and his friends! Lol They couldn't believe I was able to make these dragon eyes.😋
Yay!!
Your laugh and Tiny giggles are infectious.
Very breath-taking! I love this technique and the way you explained it as you went. I work with polymer clay a lot, and I spend an hour one day trying to shop for realistic doll eyes only to find them too expensive and not what I wanted. Even though I'm looking for more of a human eye, I got so many ideas and so much inspiration from your video. This is amazing work!
Yvonne, I think your video was wonderful! As an artist myself, I was delighted by the amount of detail you explained and how easy it was to follow your technique. I'm not personally into making dragon eyes, but your technique mimics making ANY kind of eye because it looks so realistic. Even though I never thought I'd make a dragon eye, I must admit that I'd love to make one now because your video was so motivating! It would make a very cool piece of jewelry. Thank you for sharing the detail; you are an amazing artist. Your video is one of the best I have ever watched on any subject (and I have a lot of hobbies); you really have a talent for explaining well as you work. Good luck in your future!
Wow! Thank you, Joyce! This means a lot to me; thank you!
I'm just now loving you on youtube.. seeing your dragon eye earrings first. Have you tried temporarily putting eyes on double faced tape to a small
board, or work bench top while painting. That way you can maneuver your eyes without fingers in the way....love your work. I'm celebrating 20+ years of wire wrapping and sculpting.
Awesome. It this something to eventually do with my daughter to encourage her to be crafty/creative. Yeah, she's only 3, but that is the best time I think to plant the seeds.
Kerry O'Connor that's an excellent idea!
thanks for sharing this wonderful art I will use your technic to create eyes for paper weights and for embellishments on my next book making project.....
oooo, thats a brilliant idea! I would love to see how they come out :)

I previously purchased glass eyes from the taxidermy shop but I needed an "authentic" dragon eye for a piece I am currently working on. Yvonne, you are incredible. I love when an artist is able to articulate their process while creating. You personify the excellence of TH-cam medium. Thank you.
We made our first dragon eyes and are super stoked! Your tutorials are amazing. Thanks for putting your knowledge out there for everyone.
😍 Wow what a magical and gorgeous eye !! 😍
Thank you for this comprehensive, clear and friendly tutorial.
Super nice that you want to share the process with us.
Kind regards,
Katie (from Holland) 🌻🌻
One of the best tutorials I've watched. Great job both on the peice and on delivery. Very natural teacher.
This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your craft with me, I am definitely going to try making some.
I've looked at quite a few different videos and your dragon eyes and explanations are the best I have seen. So beautiful, keep up the amazing work!
Yvonne, you are a true artisan. The techniques you teach are priceless. The way you walk through this stuff is so thorough, and you seem like a genuinely nice person, too! Thank you so much for sharing!
That was amazing girl! I just stumbled onto this video an crafting isnt my thing but i watched every single one of those 42 mins! I love your passion about it too!
OOh darliN! Your a lifesaver!! I have just dived into polymer clay to make cute lil baby dragons .. just learning, be gentle :) But my goodness! I have been trying to figure out this eye thing for months! I've actually been buying other artists printed eyes .. it's driving me crazy cuz like you said if you print them off and another artist prints the same one off, aw man. I too have tried the fish tank glass cuz that's what I had .. ironically, I ordered some clear glass cabochons, had no idea how I was gonna make eyes and then, stumbled on your tutorial .. duh! who would'a thought! Nail Polish!! I have millions of bottles of nail polish! OOhmigosh! I'm sO damn excited that I found you!! I can't thank you enough for sharing this! Thank you thank you thank you!! I'm'a dingdOng! Honestly I know NOTHING about the medium! (polymer clay) You have sOO saved me like a million dollars and gave me back my own creativity with these dang eyes! I lOve you ~haha Ooh and the glass frame with the graphing paper underneath to use for polymer clay! I swear sometimes my brain just goes blank and seriously I just dived into this medium and ya know I'm very dyslexic and learning anything (following directions) can be very challenging, your a very good teacher, you explained everything in a way I completely understood not just watching you but the words you used .. I really appreciate people who can actually teach, you have no idea how frustrating learning can be for me .. I'm sOrry I went completely off on this comment but I just had to express how you have helped someone .. me :)
Amber, I am so glad you found my tutorial! I am VERY dyslexic and learn best with a repetitive exposure to visual, audible, and tactile mediums. It goes without saying I had a hard time in public school, lol! The best advice I can give is to be patient with yourself and to keep trying as long as it brings you joy; frustration is natural, but totally worth pushing through. If you ever have any questions or ideas that you want help bouncing back and forth, send me a message and we'll chat :)
Ooh your sO sweet! sOrry it's taken me sO long to respond. But I sO appreciate you! VERY dyslexic really sucks sOmetimes. I'd lOve to chat! I found your fb page .. Where's the best place to message you darliN?
Amber lynn on Facebook is good :)
Perfect! cuz I'm really struggling with a section on my polymer clay dragons that I can't seem to figure out the best way to 'attach' it .. I think that's the right word .. usually it just happens after countless hours and a bunch of luck .. I'm getting better tho .. I just don't know the medium very well sO tricks & tips would be awesome too .. Honey, thanks for reaching out to me .. means a lot that someone would do that, specially with art .. Your an Angel! Talk sOOn :)
Amber lynn I'd love to see pics of your dragons!
Don't thank me, Thank You!!!This is 100 times better than dirty cup paint pours. This has talent. That's something to be proud of.Thanks,O'dan
Finally finished an eye. Found that nail polish remover is my friend. I had a nice big glass dome. Now I am going to do some different colors. I got some polish at the dollar tree. I would post it on Facebook but I deactivated it last year. Just too much drama. I think I'll somehow make this a paper weight for my daughter. She likes sci-fi and fantasy and they have a small apt and it won't take up too much space.
Thank you so very much for making these videos. I like the long ones. I do a lot of pausing and going back to watch again.
I love listening to you and the music.
I saw on one of her other videos that she put the Dragon's Eye on a Pop Socket
on the back of her phone... That is so cool.
Freaking awesome! Love it! By far, the most informative and entertaining tutorial I've watched in quite a while! ❤️🙏
Graph paper inside of a picture frame.......absolutely brilliant!!!! Seriously, this blew my mind! Such a simple, elegant idea. I love it! I am making one tomorrow. That idea alone made watching this video worth it, lol. Plus, the project is very cool.
Thank you, Yvonne. You have opened up a whole new craft to me. I have been practicing on those little ones you get at craft stores and have had moderate success. I just received some cabochons in the mail, much like the ones you show. I am looking forward to making my own creations.
Yay!!! I am so glad to get you snagged into a new craft!
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing your talent!
I saw this video when I was a kid and this video stuck with me enough that when I came across a need to make dragon eyes a couple days ago I was able to remember enough of this video and made some really good looking eyes!!!! Incredible video and thank you for helping me achieve a childhood dream!
Right on! I'm so glad to be helpful to you, thank you for sharing!
Adam Savage shared your video!
O.O ermahgherd, I am freaking out a bit! hehe, thanks for subscribing! :)
Hey cool, good for you!
Really enjoyed your video, my wife and I enjoy doing different kinds of art like this and will definitely be trying to do the glass eyes so thanks for posting your video and giving us some inspiration much appreciated.
Also, yes words are hard lol.
It would be awesome to see him attempt to paint one in a one day build or something!
In the past I have used bamboo skewers to achieve the scraping technique it works well I have found and if the skewer point starts to degrade a bit I just go with it because the nature of bamboo lends itself well being its a bunch of fibers. I can scrape, wipe down and scrape some more and it's disposable after use but since I get the long ones I can sharpen it with a pencil sharpener and use the same one until its a nub! still very economical. I do like the addition of the wood tool though! Thanks Yvonne. Very nice work!
ooo, right on! Very clever use of the pencil sharpener!
Yvonne Williams Thanks! I love your work and all you do has inspired me to stop waiting and collecting craft stuff and, well....CRAFT! Cheers!
Wow! My son and I were glued to this from start to finish!. Our eyes could not leave the screen! 😉 Very beautiful work of art. You have inspired us to create these eyes for our D&D games. Dragons wilĺ never be the same for our games. Thank you for sharing your artistic wisdom.
This was amazing!!!! I'm having back spasms tonight & needed to mentally focus on something else. Your art totally drew me in & let the pain subside. I'm not that artistic, but I feel like I could try this and end up with something pretty. You're an excellent teacher! Thank you!!!
Thanks, Sheila! I am glad to be helpful to you, and I would love to see what you make!!
I stumbled across your channel by chance. Your work is truly amazing. Your tutorial is excellent. Thanks, and keep up your amazing work.☺
You are a fantastic artist. I loved watching your art emerge into the piece you designed. What an honor to be a part of this moment. I'm truly envious. Thank you for teaching and inspiring.
My sister and I worked along with the video and made fantastic eyes. Thank you so much for such great videos.
yay!! I'd love to see what yall made!!
I don't know how to post a pic on here. Do you have an email I can send to?
Can you please show us how you wire wrap your eyes that looked amazing and This eye turned out gorgeous I am so inspired
Sure, Kayla!! :)
You make it look so easy, bless your heart.thank you for sharing.I’m 61 and still learning everyday.💕
Thank you for sharing your amazing ideas. It looks wonderful!!!!!
I AM GOONA DO THIS AND MAKE MAGNETS FOR MAH FRIDGE, AND FOR MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY, THIS IS SO COOL!
Love, love, love, LOVE this! I usually come across arts and crafts stuff that catch my eye, but when i go into the video, i get over whelmed, because i know for a fact, i don't have the skills to produce what they're doing. But with THIS, i honestly feel like this is within my range of skill, and with stuff that i like, but never really have a use for (the nail polish), so THANK YOU for sharing your art here! This eyes is so grand and beautiful! Keep up the good work!
oooo, excellent ideas!!
Hi Yvonne. Love this video!! Spent many years in costume and sculpture - you are wonderfully methodical and natural teacher - well done. So glad you shared where you find your calibrated cabuchons. Please share where you purchase your tools- i need some more!!
The calibrated cabuchons been one of the biggest bug bears for me over the years , so I resorted to creating silicone molds and casting clear glass resin cabuchons, the beauty of that was i could tint transparently using pure pigment powders and tolulene as a suspension agent. For clear nail polish OR the Clear Casting resin (cold set in 6 mins) I would add Merck eyeshadow powders, (being safe to handle) and most have already mixed in colour changing pearlescent pigment ie Yellow over Green or Red over Blue etc - so when you turn the eye - the colour changes. = fantastical. Finally another thing you should try is going to car spray painting suppliers and getting some glitter/pearl powders as are extremely fine and look stunning mixed in clear polish, magic or the resin.
That was 42 minutes well spent. Absolutely fascinating video, such a dramatic and beautiful result from such simple techniques. Wonderful, makes me want to get some nail polish in and have a go or maybe I could just borrow my wifes ;) Well done Yvonne.
Right on! thank you Del :-D
Well, I have to admit, ...... ya had me trapped right around 6 minutes of your video when you hauled out the leather awl and chip carving chisel, YES!, tools I recognize! I hit the start button with the intent of seeing what it was that you were so proud of and, as you progressed into the actual application of the various tones, it was like watching the Northern Lights in a constant progression of color and hue! (If you ever laid out in the North Country late on a crystal clear night mesmerized by the constantly changing hues and intensities of the Aurora, you will understand my feelings.)
This is something that I, a manly man, an outdoorsman who loves to tough it in the outback taking along only the bare essentials of life, would never EVER watch!! It is like a huge gorilla shaped, knuckles dragging on the ground, WWF wrestler sitting at home in the evening watching the cooking channel!! ........ or Bugs Bunny cartoons!!!!
I want to give you a cyber-hug for filling a small hole in my life that I never imagined was even there! I have done all sorts of crafts but more like braiding [making headstalls for horses and other gear and tack], leather work of all sorts [knife sheaths and holsters, pouches, bags, leather grips on walking staffs, etc.], cooking [using cast iron over an open fire for all sorts of cooking an baking needs], and wood carving [oakleaf carving and checkering on gun stocks and pistol and knife scales], but I wish I had the steady hands at 74, that I had a 34, I would love to try this out just for my own satisfaction.
....... And maybe I will. Who's gonna know and who would care anyway. I want to experience the journey of what you have shown me, not necessarily the destination of the finished product.
Thank you so much for giving of your time and talent. You have made my day, I can assure you and that, my dear, is the truest compliment you may get from anyone.
Wow, thank you so much for your kindness! I am so glad that you enjoyed my video and my work! I'm returning the cyber hug right back to you!
What a lovely compliment to this bubbly young artist and her beautiful creations 😊
And may I also say , that for a few moments , a rare smile played across my face whilst I shared in your own life experiences.
I could hear the crackling fire , smell the woodsmoke , and in grateful silence watch , as the waning light of day surrendered to the embrace of night, wrapped in her starry blanket.
I thankyou , kind Sir 😊
Framer Guy ... Jeez , did you have to write a book
Framer Guy
I love your comment! And as for 'writing a book' it's just nice to read such lovely feedback that is well deserved.
I have so many things on the go that I was about to bookmark this video for a later date. However after reading your comment I've decided to go get me a coffee and sit to watch it. Thank you. :)
Framer Guy If you decide to try this out, please upload a video of your progress! I think it’s AMAZING! I have always wanted to learn how to draw or make any kinds of art, but a lot of the works look really hard. And I know this piece, is anything but easy, but it looks a little less intimidating then other things. I may try it. Why not?! Good luck to you, kind sir!!!! ⚜️⚜️
I enjoy your videos, not only for your talent and laugh but you are literate and that is refreshing.
I am drinking my morning coffee obsessed with how damn creative this is!! You are totally awesome!!
lol, thanks William!
very beautiful tutorial. I can not freaking wait to try this. I love how detailed you are with instructions. It helps alot! do you have a few of the sellers you brought the oval and larger circle glass cabochons from? especially the huge 50mm size. sadly whenever i try to look it up on ebay or etsy they are the pre-made eyes and not jus the plain glass
i know beadaholique sells 40x30
What I find only slightly less amazing than these dragon eyes, is that you share your secrets on how to make them!! I've seen others, your are hands down - the best!
I love this tutorial! It's great! Your personality is really fun so it was easy to follow along with you. Great work. : )
Hey, Lyndsay! I'm glad you like it :)
As an idea to give it even more zing as part of a costume, you could add a thick layer of clear acrylic to the back (before adding the final layer of black and protectant) and while the clear is still wet, add in 1 or more model LED lights (like for model trains or something) to give it that same effect as when the light was shining through the back. Just imagine what it would look like when you had it turned on in a dark room!
ooooo!!!! So cool!!!!
Not gonna lie, every time you started scratching and adding more polish I was rolling my eyes like "that's enough... please STOP". Once it was done it was completely worth the extra time. My best friend/cousin loves dragons. I am totally making him one of these. Great tutorial!
Superb. Now I watched this I will have to think of something I can make that needs eyes...
hehe, right on! I would love to see what you decide to make :) You can share pictures to my facebook page, if you would like: facebook.com/Back-to-Earth-Creations-232879571674/
I can only do that if I have a Facebook page myself and I will avoid that until I really must have one. Facebook is a great time eater and at the moment my time is very full. Still, I will find a way to share the images if I find something to make. At the moment it's unlikely I'll have time for making anything but furniture until September or thereabouts.
FireAngel Londoner me too 😂😂😂
so made a few from the glass fishtank buttons jafter watching this just to see if I could do it. so now I want to to find some better glass like you use
hehe, right on! I get my glass cabochons from www.aliexpress.com :)
thank you for the info. I ordered some 1 inch cobochons and plan to get some of the 2inch or 50mm ones next. I hope they get here soon so I can make a couple. I think I am going to make a couple walking sticks with 2 eyes at the top one on each side. maybe one looking like fire and the other looking like ice. and also want to fix some to the knives I want to make like on the handle or something like that.
ps I also want to get the oval ones I think they look way cool
I'm so glad to see someone using nail polish to paint! I've been doing that for many years. ❤
This is just beautiful! I have a quick question, well, two. Where can I get the tools? And if I wasn't going to wire wrap (I don't know how) them, how could I "finish" them off without having a back with all the polish there? Just use the Mod Podge that you suggest or do you have another idea? Like if they were going to be carried in a pocket?
Barbara Greer hey! I believe the modge podge would work well. though you could also adhere a layer of felt, suede, or leather to the back to give it a finished look :) and the tools I used I got at hobby lobby and tandy leather, but it's more about the concept than the specific tool, the same thing can be done with any needle tipped tool and blade
Thanks for the suggestions! I can't wait to try this.
At your local art store you could get "Gloss Medium & Varnish", it is more durable than the Mod Podge Dimensional. I use both for different things. Depending on the size, you could create a container for it. An altoid tin, or a small braces wax container. Also small pill containers, there are all kinds and designs for people who want to carry pills without a medicine bottle.
dental tools would make great tools, i am thinking..
When your nail polish bottles are empty salvage your little "ball" & put it into the bottles that don't have them. Beautiful job
ooo, thats a good idea! I will have to start doing that :)
I love that you made the point that even though you are giving out the 'how to' and could lead to competition, we are artists and our interpretation of the art will make differences. What a wonderful attitude of sharing!
I did this on the bottom of some wine glasses, they turned out really cool! I wish I could post a pic.
Oh wow, that sounds like it would be awesome!!
Love your videos! This video is such a wonderful detailed video, and THANKYOU so much for sharing!! I do have a question for you. What size is the cabochon your using when making the dragon eyeball in this video? I do have a bunch of 25mm transparent flat back cabochons, which I know can be used for this. I didn't know cabochons came bigger than 25mm. Exactly what size is it? Thanks! 😀
Hey, Jen! Thanks for watching; I am really glad you like it :) In this video I used a 50mm cabochon, but the most common size I use is 30x22mm oval or 25mm-30mm round. A lot of what size cab I use is determined by what project I am making; I use bigger pieces for necklace; than I do for bracelets; than I do for earrings.
I started on 50 mm and they are still my best sellers. Size wows them!
It's sooooo amazing what you can do with the simplest of tools. A little bit of nail polish, annnnd scraping. Who would have figured.😊
The music in the background is so relaxing!
I'm glad you like it, Courtney! I started playing the guitar so I could do my own background music :)
Phenomenal tutorial...beautiful work, and very inspiring!!
I was NOT put off by the length of the video. In fact, I hung on every word enjoying watching the process of you creating something so stunning! THANK YOU for sharing. I now want to learn more. I've needed inspiration today and I found it with "back to earth creations" Amen, Sista!!

You were a joy to watch, and the eye turned out so well!
Thank you, Katrina!!!
Katrina Lee oo
I use nail polish on a lot of my paper drawings or sketches of fashion and it really truly makes a beautiful shine and design, and you can put sharpie on top of it and do cool textures and animal prints
This is full on to the max awesome! Wow!
Thanks, Carl!
That accidental orange glob actually worked out in the end imo. I think it gave the eye more depth
lol, I think most of what I do is just a happy accident :p
I have to say it is the best looking handmade eye I have seen, I'm very glad you recorded it along with your comments on the process. Congratulations, I would be very proud if I had done that masterpiece myself!
Could you get more of a three dimensional effect using clear coats?
ooo, maybe! I'm gonna have to experiment with that!!
Please let us know how it goes!
pls make a video of it :D
I was just thinking about that!!! Right now you are painting the background first, scratching, and painting the next, and the next, etc... I think if you waited till the last scratch coat before you clear coat it, then add the final color it would be pretty cool. I wouldn't take the clear coat up to the pupil though as the pupil is a hole you wouldn't want it to appear raised lol.
If you were careful you could even paint in reverse, but you would need a clear coat that wouldn't scratch easily. Then each layer would be more 3d. You would probably have to skip using the hard scratching tools, and scratch everything while wet.
I do find a clearcoat before I start ANY other painting gives me better results. And 8-10 coats is pushing it. Sometimes having to dry a full day between coats/layers. I am also compounding my own glitter based polish colors now, and use a) polyester glitter so it doesn't lose color b) stick to silver or gold for your glitter, and c) go very fine on your mix in glitters. Always backcoat/seal and beware of bleed (I have issues with a black/silver I just did, used too coarse a spangle on the glitter mixin. Plus though this one looks gorgeous, it turned midnight blue in background and bleeds horribly 'blue' into the clearcoat brush when I seal it.
Von,I'm still waiting for the "Round Glass Cab, & Shinny Fingernail Polish" boat to come in.I bought some Black2.0 for the pupil to see if it will be darker.I going to put some layers of real clear epoxy between the layers of scratching's and polish to see if it'll go 3D. Also have gold leaf to see if it could be helpfulI've gotten interested in this because of my youngest son has damaged an eye in 5th grade 2 cornea transplant failures and he's pretty stuck with a clouded cornea that makes his eye the most beautiful lite teal. He collects everything that has an eye on it. Bic lighters, and glass pipes.
Woah, right on!
I agree with everyone below that this is an awesome tutorial! It takes something that looks so complicated and breaks it down to a simple, inexpensive, non-frustrating technique!
I made a red one just differ
then what you used I used flat marbles and sanded it I also painted a ocean theme and I did an bald egile
oh, that is super cool!!!
I love that dragon eye It’s super cool! and so pretty it catches the light so perfectly ! 😃 You did an amazing job with it!
You're amazing. Thank you.
wow, thank you Anthony!
You are most welcome! Seriously talented. I wish you total success, I
really mean it.
OH!! And those dislike's, i will ride my welsh dragon and defeat them all! lol
My sister is sooooooo inspired by your beautiful creations. Now she makes wonderful pieces. Thank you for sharing your art, you are amazing... ❤❤❤
Adam of Mythbusters just linked to your video via facebook - its how I got here. Be prepared to see an increase in views and comments. Great tutorial by the way.
Lol, thanks Christian! and omg, is there ever: my phone started blowing up with email notifications and I have been a hot mess! Thanks for watching, and have an awesome day :)
I didn't see this on Mythbusters. Just happened upon it but I LOVE it! We just built a castle for our school auction and the 7th grade painted it in Art class. These dragon eyes would go great with the project! Thanks for the great tutorial.
Speaking of Dragon's Eyes...
Have you made a video on "Game of Thrones"
White Walker Dragon ... That would make a Beautiful
Dragon's Eye.
OK woman. I've watched this 3 times now. I have really small glass cabochons to work with until I find bigger ones. I had fun buying polish today. Guess what I'm doing tomorrow. You are a very generous young lady sharing your craft with us all. I am constantly inspired by you ☺
I think I could actually do this. I'm going to give it a try. :)
yay! I would love to see what you make, if you would like to share :) You can send me a message or post pictures here facebook.com/Back-to-Earth-Creations-232879571674/
The Crazies good luck
This is gorgeous
Thank you, Adelle!
My husband and I own Eberly's Emporium on FB and I am always looking for new craft items to add to our inventory. This can be used in sooooo many ways. Can't wait to master this. Thanks for your expertise. I'm a subscriber for life.
The most amazing things are usually the most simple things.
This would be the only reason that I will use nail polish. :P
hehe, I like nail polish for hiding when I have dirty nails from the garden or painting and it wont scrub out :p a tomboy hack for looking like a "proper" lady hehehe
HAHA, you are just as "lady- like" as me. ;) :P
Sijtske van Lambalgen I was like.....I've never shopped for nail Polish how the Hell do I know what's good or not. When she said "not all nail Polish is created equally, I died.....and whaaat there's gel Polish, yeah I'm screwed.....I think I've owned 2 bottles my entire life..one was for Halloween and the other was clear.....lol...so not a girly girl lol
I went to the local Dollar General (discount type store) and buy a lot of $1 and $2 bottles of their polish. Walmart has some lovely colors for under $5-there is a reddish copper that I will pay that much for. Just stay away from stuff marketed at littler kids and you should be fine. Just remember a good solid backing paintoff (I hoard black polish and LA nails in the eeny teeny bottles is too transparent for this) then seal it. I give a day after final paint to let it dry, then do the backing paintoff and let it dry a day then seal it and let that dry a day. I don't wear polish there is nothing that will stick properly to my nails-about half will be off in less than 24 hours...
Sijtske van Lambalgen me too, except it's awkward telling them i need colored nail polish because im a dude
I started off drawing, painting and also creative writing, I love your style of teaching and instructing and have decided to expend my interests into working with other mediums which now include jewelry making, resin and clay. You are effortlessly talented and the reason you're so good at what you do is because it's something that you absolutely love to do. I hope to one day be remotely as good as you are, but lets face it...not everyone is born with this much talent but thank you for making us feel like we are. I make art because I cannot live without creating
25:21 ''That's fine, it doesn't have to be perfectly symetrical'' **keeps scratching** x)
lol, the struggle though. I'm a free spirit but also kindof obsessive. *doh*
Haha don't worry I'm kind of a perfectionist as well ^^
I use an awl AND a flathead 2" pin for scratching out. The latter gives me a finer line which is good for smaller diameter cabochons.
How absolutely _beautiful_ to watch :O
Fantastic end results! Sharing this with some professional cosplay builder friends :)
hehe, thanks!
totally awesome my boyfriend and I want to make an eye you are an artist. thanks for sharing.lucille & Leroy from Albuquerque new Mexico .
This was brilliant to watch…you explain each step so well…the finished piece is breathtaking!
Hey!
Hum I know this video is super old but I made some and I have a question :"0
Can I put those in the oven? I'd like to make them pendants by circling them with polymer clay but I'm scared the nail polish would crack if I baked them...
I couldn't find anything about that online soo yeh
Thanks anyways!
Hey, Korayla! Your English is great! So long as you are using glass (not resin or plastic) for the cabochon and let your nail polish dry for a few days, you should be fine :) The worst I have experienced is some bubbling if the polish is still wet, and sometimes the neon yellows can tend to darken during baking. Happy Crafting!
Yvonne Williams Oh thanks!
Yeah they're dry for at least 10 days it should be okay :"D
I'm glad it's not gonna ruin them I spent so much time on those little things! I think I'm still going to test it first with a test cabochon so I'm really safe
Thanks for answering so fast
