  • What are the symptoms of dyslexia in spelling? Find more information on dyslexia and dyslexia treatment at www.dyslexiaconnect.com . Subscribe to our channel for more videos about dyslexia.
There are a number of main dyslexia symptoms to look for in spelling. Many students with dyslexia have a difficult time with phonics, and this causes them to be unsure when they are spelling. A student with dyslexia may not know what letter or letter combination to use when spelling a word, because they are unsure of what many letters and letters combinations say.
Another symptom of dyslexia in spelling is difficulty with vowel sounds. Many dyslexics have a heard time learning short vowel sounds and applying them when they spell. Even dyslexic students who are fairly advanced may still forget short vowel sounds from time to time.
Many students with dyslexia memorize spelling words. Dyslexics memorize spelling words as a coping mechanism, because they do not have a good sense of phonics and how to use letters and letter combinations. As a result, they may memorize a spelling list and do decently on it, but afterwards, they will forget how to spell many of those words.
Dyslexics tend to misspell common sight words. A "sight word" is a word that does not follow the normal rules of phonics. Students with dyslexia may see these words continually, but they still forget how to spell them.
Copying words is very difficult for kids with dyslexia. A dyslexic child may copy words from a board or book, and still have trouble spelling the words correctly. Also, copying is slow and laborious for them.
Children with dyslexia tend to be inconsistent with spelling. If you ask them to spell the same word five days in a row, you may get a different spelling from them every day.
Spelling tends to be frustrating and laborious for children with dyslexia. They may avoid spelling, feel it is exhausting, and get frustrated every time they try to spell. If a child is of average, or above average intelligence, and has trouble with spelling, they may be dyslexic.

I was put in slow classes because of my dyslexia. But as an adult I’ve excelled in life because of my comprehension of critical problem solving that most people without this disease can’t grasp because of the way they look at life itself. Its hard to develop reading comprehension skills but once we do we are unstoppable

“Disease” is such an awful word to use in that context. Makes you sound like a victim when quite clearly you are putting yourself above others. Drop the narcissism.

This explains so much for me! I was never told I had dyslexia as a kid, parents and teachers just thought it was a lack in attention to detail. I'm an adult now and most words I know how to spell is because I memorized them. Common things I heard when I was a kid "just look it up in the dictionary" "sound it out!" "why does it take you so long to copy notes?" (little did they know is that i was copying notes letter by letter)

I was the kid who memorized spellings yet still to this day struggle with daily sight words. Spell check has been a life saver.
I also memorized words based on someone speaking them to me and recognizing what they looked like but struggled with words that I couldn’t remember how they sounded.
I mixed up orders of words when speaking or reading and was constantly made fun of because of it.
My teachers would tell my parents that all I needed to do was to just slow down. When in reality I couldn’t spell a word out loud even when looking at it and didn’t really understand most words even though I loved to read (really I just loved stories and had a wild imagination.) I would even vastly misunderstand the whole point of some stories!
I discovered in college when taking a educational psychology class that I wasn’t stupid, just dyslexic and have really begun to understand myself and have more sympathy with other dyslexics out there. (I just spelled dyslexic wrong and autocorrect saved my butt again.) Thank you to this channel and others like it spreading the word about how dyslexia works and the degrees of verity. I wish I had more dyslexic training when I was younger.

I've always struggled with spelling and grammar, I was homeschooled throughout, in my teens my mom gave up teaching grammar to me. I remember her saying you're just never gonna get it in frustration. You're just like your Dad. I felt like an idiot and I've been hiding my writing since, I've struggled so bad on spellings feeling embarrassed that I get my there's, mixed up still. I remember struggling to correctly spell sugar for a good decade mixing up the vowels. But I read fine. So I just didn't realize these are dyslexia symptoms. Pronunciation and copying are hard for me. I've always been a visual learner. Man I wish I'd known sooner 30 years struggling.

I have a question, ater watching all the videos I found that I showed all the symptoms for spelling but almost none for reading so could this mean I have dyslexia or just have problems with spelling

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for your question, Jason. Individuals with dyslexia often compensate for reading difficulties by memorizing the shape and appearance of a large amounts of words. This is how they read, rather than through application of phonics and syllable rules. However, they often run into difficulties when they see unfamiliar or complex words, since they are not comfortable sounding words out. For an adult with dyslexia, this can give the appearance that they are mostly fine in reading, but have difficulty with spelling. However, when they are evaluated for dyslexia, the doctor or psychologist is able to discover that there are actually issues with both. So, we do sometimes see individuals who show symptoms of dyslexia is spelling, but not in reading. I hope that information helps. You might find the IDA to be a good resource. Here is their website. • @anaisabelpais7389

    I'm 20 and in college for pre-med.
For Years I've had people randomly ask if I'm dyslexic. In my Junior year of high school I finally got the courage to go to my guidance counselor about it, and he said it can't be true because I was in honors classes. Then he wrote a b and a d on two sticky notes and told me to tell him which was which and when I was right, he sent me on my way (as though testing in a little stress situation with individual letters is real testing).
I know I have dyslexia since I've always had symptoms of it. In second grade my teacher would keep me in at lunch time copying down letters again and again because I wouldn't finish in class, but she was always very nice about it and I didn't mind.
In third grade my teacher would be annoyed because I would be the last one done copying down vocabulary definitions. And then get annoyed because I was bored waiting for everyone else to finish the math that was super easy for me (I couldn't have done my vocab in that time?). We were also learning cursive writing which was a pain; I couldn't even get the o right because I wrote it from the bottom to the left instead of at the top to the right, and couldn't figure out where the loop went.
In fourth grade I moved to the town over and we started switched classes. In math, we were memorizing multiplication and doing the timed tests that were not fun. In writing whenever we had an essay, there would be people finished by the end of the week and I would still be drafting; I would finish the draft and then copy it over in pen for my published essay without proofreading for homework. In science and social studies we would do popcorn reading, where the current reader would pick the next reader, and I was very rarely picked because I was so slow.
I remember in fifth grade, during a reading exam, my teacher asked who wanted a little strip of color overlay to help with reading, and she didn't think I needed one, but still gave it to me. It made reading the test so much easier!
For years I just learned how to deal with it. I made stupid writing mistakes, my reading was slow and difficult, and I can't memorize useless information at all. On a US history exam once I wrote the word religion three different ways and she circled them all and took off points, but I just laughed. Because it had never happened before no matter how often I do it.
Now that I'm in college it's actually gotten more difficult to deal with. Because there is so much reading for every class. My notes don't really matter because I can figure out what I meant when I write words like Examble instead of Example, but writing the notes is still slow.
Testing at my college costs $500, so I doubt I will ever do it, but it'd be nice to know that it's not all in my head.
Dyslexia is actually nice sometimes. I can imagine molecules and minipulate them in my head, turning them around in all directions as though I am using a model. So that's good for organic chemistry, even if my inability to memorize 100+ reactions isn't great.
I may have dyslexia, but I will use it to my advantage.

For me, the difficulty is about knowing if it's an E or an A, when the I is pronounced like an eye or an E and if its than or then, where or were. when the G sounds like an F in a word like enough and why determine is pronounced with a min when it has mine at the end. And it doesn't help that there is American and UK spelling. So much more, I can go on forever. I basically crammed my spelling, taking me very long to learn it and still working on it in my 20s.

Dear Sir, we are a Chinese family living in a French-speaking country. I doubt my 6 year-old son has dyslexia. During his study on Chinese language, he showed some key symtoms that you highlighted in the previous videos. But as he just started to speak French, I have problem to understand how the local doctor here could diagnose him as a kid who speaks mainly Chinese and very little French. What is your opinion? Do we have to travel back to China for his diagnosis and treatment?

    • @DyslexiaConnect
      @DyslexiaConnect  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for your question. If an individual has dyslexia, the dyslexia is present in any language. So, you could technically have your son tested for dyslexia in French. Since you mention that he just started to speak French, you may want to give him a little more time with the language before having him tested. This will probably allow the doctor or psychologist to provide a more thorough assessment. However, you could contact a provider in your area and ask whether this is necessary, or if he could be tested now. Have a great day.

My English teacher is dyslexic and she says that I may be even though I'm in top set. think I may have mild dyslexia but I'm not sure, most of the points in this video I have, I am 12 years old and still use little poems to spell words eg. Big elephants can always understand small elephants - because. Some words I spell rong like says, only recently have I realised it was not spelt sais. And sometimes I will spell one word 3 different ways in a peice of writing or exam. When I was younger ( about 7) my teacher sent me to the options because I was reading books really close to my face (about 10 cm away) however my eyes were fine. but now I have no issues with reading. Also I used to write c's, b's, d's and 3's the opposite way round unintentionally. My long term memory is really bad and find it easier to get something in my short term. I have watched the other videos and none of them match up, but this video is exactly like me. But I am not sure because I am top class in English. Do you think I have some symptoms of dyslexia?

Thanks for your question. If you have dyslexia, one of the best ways to improve your reading and spelling is by instruction from a teacher trained in the Orton-Gillingham Method, or one of the methods in the Orton-Gillingham family. Have you worked with a dyslexia teacher or tutor before?

Iam 19years old now I think I may have dyslexia , as a kid iam good at maths science but when is comes to languages I get fear , we 3 languages in my school telugu, hindi, english, I get spelling mistakes in all of them like every next word and it's not like that I don't remember answer .I know answer but I can't spell it in fact I still remember my 3rd class lesson , when iam writing I get words in my mind but I don't get there spellings so I go to next word which can fit in that place, at one time I know it's spelling and next movement I forgot it . I still feel in the same way . I get confused between common words like which and watch, so many words , as a kid I used to count number of letters in the word to check I got correct spelling or not, I got tied of this, even by typing this I got so much trouble to spell , I tried so hard fix my self but it not happened

I'm 17, currently doing my olevels. I've noticed that reading and spelling have always been difficult for me. Now that I'm in year 11, I can read well but spelling correctly is still a problem. I usually get good grades in all my subjects including english but i make very very stupid spelling mistakes. Once in my exams i spelled rocks as rokes, throw as through, and many more of such mistakes. In one of my recent tests i spelled market as markit and then my friend was shocked and she asked me to spell it again and I spelled it as marckit and when she told me the spelling I felt like I already knew the spelling. Should I be concerned ?
btw your video was very informative

+success lover Thanks for your question. Those issues you mention are very common symptoms of dyslexia. Many individuals with dyslexia are highly intelligent, but struggle with spelling words like the ones you mentioned. Sometimes, they spell the word different every time they make an attempt. Where are you located? I may be able to recommend some resources that would be useful. Thanks!

I have difficulty spelling few time to time and it can be frustrating and agitating and cause of forgetting words or my alphabetical words or the words that are lined are and how they are pronounced and then I have to repronounce the words again it always happen but honestly say that I'm Usually used to it now but can be a nuisances in different pieces and different ways and being forgetful with things can be annoying when you have to forget a simple word or the most easiest words with having dyslexia but I have mild dyslexia it's not severe I'm grateful for that but I do forget to remember things that's a problem with me though that can be rough and be irritating and be a annoyance but what else can I say if anyone read this much! appreciative and if anyone else has dyslexia or any other symptoms don't let frustrate like it does it to me it can be a shemozzle but I would say it's normal to me normality to me pretty much but that's all for now.

Hi, Carmina. This video is intended to raise awareness about how dyslexia affects spelling. That is the reason why it doesn't include advice about how to improve spelling. To improve spelling, I would recommend tutoring with a teacher who is trained in the Orton-Gillingham Method. Have a great day.
