New to this-bought 2 jolly heaters for 2 different 5 gallon betta tanks. I thought the heaters would automatically cut off and they obviously did not. Woke up to one tank over 90 degrees and the other almost 90 degrees.

I've been in the hobby for decades and watched a lot of aquarium video's but this is the only one I've seen that describes this type of heater setup. It's such a great idea I don't know why other aquarium channels haven't mentioned it. I was using the Inkbird temperature controller with 2 three hundred watt heaters on my 240. As soon as I saw this, I got a two hundred watt and set it up as described. Let's hope I never have to find out if all three fail safes work. Thanks for the info.

Hi Kev, Your channel has been more than helpful to me in setting up my next tank. I need a setup as you show in this video because a heater failure caused me to lose all my fish in a 55-gallon community tank. It was sad. I'm now going to try my hand at African Cichlids and your guidance makes it very clear how to have a successful setup. I'm starting a 65-gallon tank with the equipment suggestions you've made in your videos. I bought an Oase Thermo 850 with a 400W heater in the canister filter. Do you recommend a 200W secondary heater?

Found this video after looking for 'Aquarium Temperature Controller', I have always used 2 small heaters, but one recently broke (in the off position) so I am using a larger spare heater on its own and wanted an extra level of safety if that failed, this goes beyond that. I didn't think of putting the big one on the controller and leaving the small one as a back up on its own. I was going to buy another small heater and controller and run them both off the controller, now I just need to buy a controller. Great video thank you very much.

@@KaveManAquatics Hey can I ask you - some say don't get an overpowered heater because it could fry your tank badly if it stays on. Some say get an overpowered heater so that it doesn't have to come on and off as much and wears out slower. Do you think heater one should be rated for the tank size, or can it be rated up? Thanks!!!

Great video. Heater failure happend to my tank just 2 days ago. When feeding my African Cichlids early morning, I found the water temperature in my 800 liter tank (211 gallon) was 34.5c (94F). The heater was stuck on full blast. I am so glad I noticed it on time. Fish were still fine, actually they seemed as playful as ever...
I installed now an Aqua Medic temperature controller with alarm, and a Aqua Medic titanium 300W heater. This should keep them safe!

Hi Kev, I like the information you've provided here as I am new to the hobby and in the process of setting up my first large tank 150 gal. With most heaters just having a knob you turn until the light comes on how do you get them to the slightly higher and slightly lower settings that needed in this set up? Also with a 150 gal tank would it be okay to use two 300 watt heaters?

Thank you so much for this video. Sharing your knowledge has really helped me understand. After almost 30 years, I am just getting back into having a fish tank.
I have a 66 gallon tank that was given to me. The heater (Aqueon, that has a dial on top) i just purchased is not keeping consistent temperatures. I have two seperate digital thermometers (battery operated so i wanted a back up). When i noticed the temp drop, I used my digital meat thermometer to test the water temp, incase the other thermometers were defective.
I am now looking at changing the heating set up to digital with a backup scenario that you just described.
    What I am considering is:
Main heater: hygger submersible double quartz 300 watt
    Controller: inkbird ITC 306T
I am not sure what wattage or brand of digital heater back up heater to get for the second. I do travel, so i want a solid back up for this tank. Would it be best to get the same heater, just set the temps differently? What would you recommend?
Thank you in advance for your time to help me out.

Hi sir kaveman i find your videos very useful but i have a question i have 8 gallon and 50 watts heater and we use a/c 24/7 @ 20 degrees my heater is turning on and off frequently is it normal? But it is maintaining the temperature of 80 degree fahrenheit for my betta.

Just came across your channel and am a fan already! Question for you: I am a new fish tank owner and have a 55 gallon and tropical fish. What brand and wattage of heaters do I buy to set up what you have described in this video? My top fin heater that came with the tank doesn't seem to be heating the tank as much as the setting says it should.

Great addition!! Have you ever used the temp controller as the final kill safe?? Say setting the 200w at 76 the 300w at 78 and the temp controller at 82. This keeps the heaters working as designed up until the failure point and you still have master shut off control with your controller. I recently purchased a smart heater that allows remote monitoring, so I would want the heater powered on unless an issue raises.

Tank temps will take a very long time to change drastically enough to effect your fish negatively. The main concern is the oxygen.

Wanted to double check in the description the link for the inkbird temp controller is for the standard 308 model which says is for greenhouse and terrariums but there is a 308S model that is for aquariums I was just unaware if it would be ok in the water?

    Hi kev,
I started a new 4x2x2 tank a few weeks ago. Have driftwood, 30kg of white gravel and a few rocks. The tank still has a excessive amount of white gravel dust in it. Can i remove and wash the gravel without starting the cycle again, or should i just gravel vac and wait it out?

As an aviation junkie, I love the idea of redundancy. Great setup and I will implement this soon.
Do you have any videos on lighting? (heard you mention in a video about the light switching to night mode) Also does it need to be full spectrum for plants?

Plants should have full spectrum yes. I have a quick short video with the specific lights I use, check it out here - th-cam.com/video/2niyaPc9tNA/w-d-xo.html

I currently have it set to .5c

G’day Kev how you going mate?
    Noticing your:
    300w of heating for 75g tank =
    4w of heating per 1gallon
My tank will be around 420 gallons so I’m guessing I’ll be needing around 1600w of heating.
I’ve got a 1000w heater, would you suggest I buy a 600w heater to use as my stand alone heater please mate?
Also just wondering what you think of the inkbird itc-308 wifi model please Kev?

My gourami and tetras have been used to 68 degrees for about 2 months now, I haven't turned on my heater for my 50 gallon tank yet, I have a big heater and 3 tetras 1 gourami, I was reading that they both like the temp at 75-80 degrees, I would like to turn on the heater for them, but not sure if I should bump it up at a cpl degree at a time or just go ahead and set it at the 75 or 80 degrees n let them warm up?

Thanks for the info! Your content is SOO helpful and accessible! One quick question, what should we set the continuous heater timer for? At first we thought it should be at 24 hrs thinking that it meant that it would continue to monitor the temp 24 hours a day which is what we wanted. We got woken up to a 2am alarm saying “E5:Continuous Heating Alarm”
Starting to wonder if the timer is more for how long the heater is on at a time? If so, what happens after that time frame. Does it just cut off and then turn back on when the temp hits the bottom target? Thanks again for everything you do!!

Another question for ya man…so my tank is in a room in my house where the room temp fluctuates. Winter it gets freezing, summer it gets very hot. Right now we’re in a bit of a heat wave so it’s a little unusual…but the tank has been in this room forever. Anyways, I noticed the tank temp is going up slightly. I have 2 heaters on each side of this 75ish gallon tank. Both thermometers are reading slightly above the green zone hovering around that mid 80 temp. Should I unplug the heaters? At what temp could these fish be in serious trouble. Mostly mollies, some tricolor sharks and gourami’a…

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

It could be the heaters you have connected to them. Make sure the temperature set on the heater itself is correct. Just because controller turns them on if sensor on heater is set to low heater itself wont turn on.

iv had a handfull of regular heaters like eheim. They last a year or some time longer. Then it starts to rust and malfunction on the inside
messing up the temp. its annoying to keep replacing those.

Can you use any type of heater with a dual controller.. does the controller override the type of heaters witch you can select a temperature manually?? Cant really find any info anywhere ..would really appreciate the help 🙏

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes the controller overrides any setting on the heater itself. The heaters are plugged into the controller. Just make sure the heaters set temp is always higher than the controller.
