      Done the same, nothing quite like having the wind in your hair looking out over the wings. It’s rather romantic really

    Amazing how he walked that a/c around in a half circle to line up w/ the runway with the wings level. I needed to watch it twice over. Smooth.

    The mark of a good pilot is to do a good three pointer landing. I realise that in order for these old aircraft to keep flying, they need to be careful and that means wheeler landings. I learned to fly in 1957 at Melbourne Australia.

    Most elegant biplane. Wonder what the swept wings do aerodynamically? Less drag? Thanks for the air show been long time I seen Tiger Moth flow so deftly.

    • @HistAvFilmUnit
      @HistAvFilmUnit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Part o the reason for the swept wings i the Tiger Moth is to retain the centre of gravity. IN the earlier Gypsy Moth (DH.60), the wings were NOT swept back, and due to the design it was actually relatively tricky to get in and out of the front cockpit, underneath the top wing. Thus in the Tiger Moth the top going was moved forward slightly to make entry and exit easier, but in order to retain the correct centre of gravity the wings needs tone swept back slightly. See here:

    • @jimetchells
      @jimetchells 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you don't know what sweep or cog means ? And also stagger

    • @justincase1575
      @justincase1575 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I owned a Tiger and still have the book on its history. Wings were swept to make it easier to get in and out of front cockpit in case of a bail out. Sweeping meant it could have center section moved foreward but still maintain correct c/g.

    ZK BLI was once owned by Andy Padgett who had a small private flying school at Momona Airport in Dunedin in the 1970's A close friend of mine was in BLI taking off from a grass strip when she hit a deeper than expected puddle of water and flipped over on her back. Andy as calm as ever and still hanging upside down was heard to say. "Well Blackie, I guess we weren't supposed to be going anywhere today"..True story.

    at 1:58-2:02 is it a trick of the camera, or did that airplane fly actual sideways? he kicks the rudder hard to port and it looks like he moved in the direction of the wingtip.

    • @HistAvFilmUnit
      @HistAvFilmUnit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably more of an optical illusion as the plane wouldn't fly sideways, but at that point it's certainly skidding to the right quite substantially...
