Sci-fi books tier list for 2020 please! We, this community, are fantasy freaks, but we're so lost in the Sci-fi genre. Tell us what to read please 😭
I want to read Sci-fi but I literally don't know what to read. I will start with Red Rising (5-6 books) this month, but I'm totally lost. I've heard good things about Ender's Game, Hyperion, Expanse (from you and the tv show) and Dune, but other than that I'm lost. And I have no idea if most of the books I mentioned are worth reading.

      -A mainly werewolf-themed series(no vampires)

-a monster mythology that focuses generally on werewolves, and maybe some ghosts, witches, and warlocks

People tend to make stupid decisions under pressure (compare quiz shows... How easy it is from the couch)
And we actually prove that stuff in our last dnd session. We basically did all the stuff. We left treasures in boxes and barrels (and forgot it for other adventurers to find it), left cursed items in treasure boxes and basically every time we went down a dungeon filled with dangerous monsters we made plans and reminded us to not split up... We did split up every time, no matter what.

Its the protagonist going into an abandoned orphanage and asylum. Yes it was both at the same time. It has just about everything going for it.

I love that you cite the Friday the 13th for bad acting and then specifically say 4, 5, 6 when those probably had the best acting in the Friday franchise.
I am fascinated by the themes in some "torture porn." Early Saw movies ask us how far we are willing to go to survive or to help others (who don't always deserve help). The Hostel movies (1&2 at least) show us the huge divide between the onscenely rich and the poor, to the point where the rich treat the poor worse than livestock. Among Friends showed us how lies and betrayals can subtlely undermine a years-long friendship, to the point where some would call for the castration of one of their friends while everyone watches and waits.

a horror movie. Known as. The Coming Of T.
The first half: pure terror, as a strange alien silhouette slaughters the characters
they find some footage of the creature, and it just so happens to be...
Mr T, in a Hawaiian shirt and heart boxers, who flies out of the footage through the computer to greet the person watching the footage, then kill them with an army of living water bottles. the second half of the movie takes an absurd turn, becoming a coming-of-age movie about a caterpillar who is also the chosen one and ends up wearing cyborg butterfly armor.

  • @imptv
    @imptv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You weren't joking about preferring sci-fi/alien horror! Your almost total avoidance of supernatural/fantastical horror is surprising given your love of fantasy. These stories can be dense with meaning and visually stunning to boot. Just take ghost stories for a start: They can deal with fear of death, loss, grief, fear of the unknown, our relationships with places and events from the past, and more broadly how we process the passage of time and our own mortality. I hope you find some more stuff in this area that speaks to you, but if not, keep enjoying what you love!
The video was a lot of fun, regardless. I came up with a few more horror tropes I'd love to see you rank or discuss at some point during this or some future October:
Body Horror - The Fly, The Thing
Cosmic Horror - The Endless, Lovecraft
    Cults - Wicker Man, Midsommar
Curses/Transgressions - Candyman, Drag Me to Hell, The Mummy
Cursed Objects - The Ring, Hellraiser
Faustian Bargains - Hellraiser, Devil's Advocate
    Hauntings - Poltergeist, The Babadook
Imposters - The Bodysnatchers, The Thing
Living Toys - Child's Play, Annabelle
    Mindfuck Endings - May, Splice
Nightmares - Nightmare on Elm Street, Dreamscape
    Playing God - Frankenstein, Splice
    Possessions - Exorcist, Child's Play
Vengeance - Pumkpkinhead, Nightmare on Elm Street
Villain Returning to Life after Defeat - SO MANY!!!
Also, if you're ever interested in a different take on analyzing the horror genre, I'd really recommend checking out:
    Acolytes of Horror: th-cam.com/channels/gTX2M68DdRvR5Jd2YHEH7A.html
    Screened: th-cam.com/users/Screenedsearch?query=horror
    Nyx Fears: th-cam.com/users/BrutalMovieReview
    The Jimmy Cage: th-cam.com/users/TheJimmyCagesearch?query=horror
P.S. I really hope you're confusing Pumpkinhead with something else. It's a great southern gothic movie about a man that sells his soul to summon a demon - not a human killer in a jack-o-lantern mask - to take vengeance on people that accidentally killed his son. Lance Henrickson turns in a truly great performance and the titular creature is hands down one of the best movie monsters of all time, brought to life by Stan Winston Studios (which also worked on Aliens, Predator 1 & 2, Terminator 1 & 2, Jurassic Park 1-3, and The Thing).

I'm always stoked to see people put twists on old tropes, to the point where I will actually stop reading books or watching movies if they see some of these 'done to death' tropes being used in the EXACT SAME WAY
But one way I could imagine would a 'realistic' reason to go into an obvious 'murder house' (spooky, run down house) are: urban explorers. The amount of videos I've watched of just people walking into really creepy places at night (or even in the daytime), it makes me realize a horror movie could be done so well using this take. It could even create a legendary 'daylight horror movie'.
And you can even throw in found footage. IF it's done right and starts out slow--just normal people walking around and exploring different parts of an abandoned property in the daylight. Slow. No janky, sudden jerking of the camera. The urbexers have probably done this before--or maybe have a youtube channel and understand the need to keep the camera steady, etc)
There's just so much potential for good movies or stories, and I always get my hopes up for new sh!t.
And I'm usually ALWAYS disappointed XD

I'm in two minds about dumb decisions in horror films. When people are in panic, they can make really bad decisions. The running up the stairs, for example.
Have you ever run through a dark wood? The tripping ain't so unrealistic. In some woods, you have to be careful during the day.

“I’m just gonna go in not even call for backup...” This reminds me of something I once heard a retired police officer say: he once showed up to a house where someone had been stabbed through the neck with a screwdriver. They were still alive, but he went and checked the house before helping them because “the person who did that could still be here, and I can’t help the victim if I’m dead.” Seems like sound logic to me. If only more movie cops thought that way , maybe we wouldn’t roll our eyes when they show up on screen.

Scream, Halloween, Psycho; are the only horror franchises I care about. I'm happy they're making more, but I would like to see other types of stories. With Halloween, it's in the contact that Myers can't die and the studio forces filmmakers to do the same stories. Even I can come with with 20 different premises to make these franchises different, but the studio answer will be always be "no."

2:02 Hey Daniel, Not unrealistic in every place. There are some really terrible places, that you can't afford to jump out, when someone screams for help at night. You might just be the one screaming for help if you do. And yes I am talking from experience. In those places, it's safer to wait out the night, hope that trouble doesn't come knocking, and come out the next morning.
Cowardice, I know. But bravery doesn't grant you an extra life either... Lol.

Had to come share a story about tripping while being chased:
Used to hate this one the way you did. In high school I had a girlfriend who was tough, intelligent, rational and athletic. We went as a group to a corn maze for Halloween and I discovered she was deathly afraid of masked men with chainsaws. As one of these came out of the corn field and stepped towards her, she screamed and started running through the maze away from and almost immediately.... tripped and fell flat on her face. Not only did we all die laughing, it reminded me that even the best and smartest fall flat on their face when running while afraid.
