How much faster is a zero turn?

  • People ask us all the time how much faster they will be able to mow using a zero turn instead of a riding mower. So, we decided to test it out for ourselves! We took a riding mower and zero turn with the same size engine and same size deck and mowed the same piece of land to see just how much more efficient a zero turn can be.

44" rider -vs- a 60" Kubota zero turn. Rider was 3.5 hours, 60" zero = 1.5 hours on a large yard with several trees and other things to mow around. Interesting enough the Kubota Zero Gas was 30% more productive than a ZD-diesel. My thoughts on this difference was due to accel and decel along with less machine weight.

I mowed primarily with a 72" LP finish mower behind a B2601 this season. Great combination! My Wright Sentar (52") spent the summer in the shop - long story. The Wright is way faster and less weed eating is required. But I find riding the tractor to be more comfortable and you can back into places in 4wd you can't get on with a zero. Great to have choices. My dream mower is a 6 foot Wright ZK on duals right now.

The stability and 4WD capability of a tractor sure is nice. We sell the Wright ZKs, and I have used a dual wheel 72" model, they are about as nice as you can get! SCAG is also now coming out with a 72" Dual wheel stand on, some good options out there for cutting grass fast and comfortable.

I've never seen someone reverse a lawn tractor at the end of every row. Is this normal to some of you? Usually you just keep driving the perimeter, so you are essentially mowing all the time. Toward the end you can do turns that have you use overlapping loops to finish the last five passes or so. At that point you are not mowing during turns, but mowing the entire rest of the time. I can't see stopping atthe end of each line and doing a three-point turn.

My personal experience with a 48" ZT vs. 60" rear finish mower...the ZT ~ 15 minutes faster per acre, with a few but not many obstacles. What I have found with a rear discharge mower is I am not going back over the windrows like I did with the ZT. That may have been my ZT...it was a nice simplicity homeowner model...not a high $ commercial mower. Overall, I find the tractor mowing is more enjoyable...to each their own. Good video!
