It's very common among old-time fiddlers to choke up on the bow that way. Another common grip is to put the thumb under the frog, which was suggested to me by a very good fiddler in Galax when I mentioned I was getting hand cramps. I've played that way since.
I have two or three YT Clips that have changed my playing and this is #! .. Thanks for filming Rayna and Rayna thanks for the inspiration .. I remember the first time I heard Ry Cooder do Billy the KId in the early 1970's and what that did to everything afterwards playing and production work both .. This has that same power of celebrating self ..
I usually dislike "Fine Times at our House" but the precision and bounciness with which she plays it makes me want to play it all day. I love the slow lopey tempo too.
Great fiddle player..but my teacher would nail me if I ever held the bow like this! But then again, maybe I should try that position if I could play as well as she does!
RIGHTEOUS
Wow. Just wow. Lovely to hear the a cappella fiddle voice... and in such fine fettle.
So little bow movement, so much beautiful music. Amazing!
Just thinking that! Beauty is simplicity and simplicity is economy (of energy)
It’s sounds like Raynas playing two instruments at once. Beautiful
Both Dan and Reyna were at Clifftop this year. What a joy to see/hear them both again!
She is one of the best fiddler's around ..for sure ...thanks Rayna !
AMEN
this is awesome!!!! awesome tunes, awsome playing, awesome everything!!!
Haunting, beautiful and excellently played!
Indeed agreed

Love the relaxed vibe...
There's an old saying: "If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid."
I love her she's a very good fiddler
Actually I got the cd after listening to this video about 30 times. Its great. Thanks for telling me the tuning. I still have yet to try that one.
Wow. Effortless. Beautiful.
O like that so much. Thanks for posting.

It was more common in Baroque times, too, to hold the bow at a higher position like Rayna does. Back when bows arched outwards...
Anyone know how she's tuned?
ADAE - raise lowest string one step to A.
What did she get?
that's an odd way to hold the bow, seems to work though, great playing.
Very common way for fiddlers to hold the bow.
