Important distinction: comparing your game to Critical Role or Dimension 20 isn’t just bad because they’re professionals, they also have a DIFFERENT GOAL than you do. You’re playing to have fun, they’re playing to put on a good show. It’s not that they’re unreasonably good at this, it’s that they’re doing something FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT than you are. It’s less like comparing your friends’ football game to the NFL, and more like comparing your family photos to TIME Magazine covers. It’s just a completely different endeavor.
Well said. An example is the time spent in Critical Role when just one or two players are taking part in a scene. In a regular game, the other players get bored after a while, but in the show, if it's still interesting for the audience, the scene goes on for as long as it needs.
yeah. It also really shows in their terrain set ups and minis. Those leds, smoke engines, elaborate minis and buildings are almost pieces of art at times and they are spectacular for a show, but they just would not work well for us setting up a game on the living room table after having eating pizza in the dinning room next door.
@@sleepinggiant4062like I imagine actors have fun filming, or comics enjoy doing their sets. They’re making a product, they’re having fun, imo they’re just better at the game than most
I don’t even know if I should’ve made this video! I have no doubt it will be misunderstood in all kinds of exciting ways I couldn’t even predict. But I, like many of you, am having a weird week. SO HERE WE GO
I think it was well worth making. Even when you think you're quite self aware of algorithms and doomscrolling it can get you. P.s. I liked the mimic video.
Yes! (In most channels) the stuff that "gets the clicks" is loud, energetic, explosive, rage-inducing, anxiety-causing, and is often bright, with "hot" colours, and all that combined tends to cause my photosensitivity and noise-sensitivity to spike.
In the SCA, we had a recurring saying "We do this because it is fun." It was a constant reminder that if it stopped being fun - for whatever reason - to do it less, or do it with less intensity, or stop doing it entirely for a bit.
@@homeiswonderland it can be a blast. It can also be expensive and sometimes a bit cliquish. My major advice is to play at the level you want to - if that's super-researched super-authentic, that's great. If it's way more casual, that's great, too. Take care!
Your line about your coworker who worked in a hospital hit me so hard. As a nurse, I feel like my perspective is a bit warped when it comes to things like stress since stuff that makes my family and friends say "my god, this is awful, how are you possibly dealing/putting up with this?!" usually makes me go "Well, no one's dying and I'm not in immediate danger so life could be worse." Knowing when to walk away from something that's not making you happy and is bad for you is super important, and I think a lot of people trick themselves into thinking they can't leave a bad situation even though there's a lot more options available to them than they realize.
I watched and enjoyed the heck out of it! One of these days I might even try and replicate it when I am not feeling lazy or involved in other things. So, maybe, some day, probably, for sure!
Literally came into the comments to just gush over how much I loved these earrings. There's so cute and very appropriate when casually mentioning how we have enough to be stressed out about in real life to be stressing over DnD too.
Still undecied wether or not the Guillotine or the Longsword earrings are better. That being sad, I totally own a BG 3 char rocking sword earrings. They would look rediculous on me, but if I were a girl I´d want some in real life... Okay, I have a sword pendant, that will do too, I guess.
@15:24 "Bored of your character? Change it. Tired of the campaign you're running? End it. Unhappy with your group? Leave it. This is one of the few places in our lives where we have absolute power." That last line there especially hits hard for me, not because I'm unhappy with my current group, but because like a lot of people right now I'm feeling a lot of weight on my shoulders from things that I have absolutely no control over and this way of spending my precious free time with my friends is all I have left to dictate for the benefit of my own wellbeing. Also, this is really valuable advice for anyone who feels stuck in a gaming-related situation they aren't happy with. Thank you Ginny for being a consistently positive and entertaining role-model for TTRPG online scene. Love your videos! (Also I promise to watch your mimic video if it makes you feel better!)
It's honestly very nice to hear someone else talk about how stressful D&D can be sometimes. When I'd bring it up to my friends and family, they would dismiss my feelings because "it's just a game," but it's definitely a social thing too! It's nice to spend time with friends in a shared activity, and it's difficult when that activity feels stressful as well. Your thoughts were very well-spoken in this video, and I liked the 4-step plan you had at the end- it's always nice to have a way to put the video's lessons into action!
I’m so glad to hear my videos bring you some joy! And thank you for appreciating the mimic-I had way too much fun making that thing, even if it was a wild 3 days 😂
Thank you Ginny for doing the sponsorship video! It's always incredibly exciting for me to see my stuff on other creators channels!! ❤ Your ad last time helped me get steel tools for injection moulded dungeon tiles, now we're already into stretch goals and about to get loads more magnetic scenery! 😄 I am so excited to see my labour of love come to life like this! 😁 You're further along in your journey than I am (with this Kickstarter I'll be paying my mum for the first time!), and it's so great to see the example you set. It's something to aspire to! 😁 Thank you again! - Annabelle
It's a genuine pleasure! 🥰 Huge congrats getting funded so quickly and being able to pay your mom this time around-that’s AMAZING! Can’t wait to see you power through the stretch goals!
I've been playing D&D since the late 70's, and when I first saw your commentaries, I thought, "Great, just what I need- some kid half my age who's been playing for less time than some of my campaigns have run, giving me advice." And I still think that. Without any sarcasm or irony. It's so easy to get so set in one's ways after literal decades of play, that it's refreshing and inspiring to see someone with all the excitement I have for the game, but from a fresh point of view. It doesn't hurt that you're creative, funny and have a lot of good things to say about the hobby, either. I even liked the mimic video (double-checks to make sure the Like button was actually hit- OK, it is now). Keep up the good work!
I'm also a "since the late 1970's" player. Well, I was the forever DM for the first decade and a half... Anyhow, our gaming has pretty much died with one player dying, two moving to another state, one drifting away from the group... Leaving two of us still in the state and still interested. I may have to try out that "playing in PUGs in a gaming store" thing. Now to find a gaming store that still exists...
@@MonkeyJedi99 You might be surprised how many independent game shops there still are. Depending on your region YMMV but they're still out there. A lot of them advertise themselves around games like MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh but they probably will do TTRPG stuff too.
@@MonkeyJedi99 If you cant find one, i know that sometimes you can do a hybrid online/in person campaign. Atleast there are a few groups in nsw that do it.
im so glad you mentioned the spell prep thing! My dm at my current table just removed it because none of us find it fun. To some people it might break the game but for us it works cause we trust each other not to abuse the fact we have access to all of our spells all the time. Not to mention it feels awesome to be able to cast whatever you want whenever you want!! (assuming you have the spell slots ofc lol)
Ah, that’s so awesome to hear! 🥳 Yep, that’s exactly the kind of thing I was talking about-if ditching spell prep makes the game more fun for you and your group, then that’s all that matters! If everyone’s on board and it enhances the experience, who cares what the internet says?
Couldn't agree more as a DM, personally I think if you're character "knows" that spell, they should *know* that spell. Preparring spells and stuff is something we save for really big fights, if one has a ritual or incantation, something that takes time, I'll give a moment before the Boss for potions, buffs, spells, swapping gear, whatever they wanna do. The only thing I really restrict is changing class, I allow it once per campaign and we can't be more than 75% done. Which I do, not spoil the story, but tell them how full their adventure feels. The more full their stories are the closer they are to the end
That's an interesting idea I might insert into future games, and I have a question, for classes that use known spells (bard, sorcerer, ranger, warlock and wizard to an extent) do you give them all the spells or are still limited to learning level by level?
@martastic3359 we keep it level by level for classes with a known spells list! For example my character is a profane soul blood hunter and i do follow the known spells list for that!
I always run it like that. I just let my players write down everything they think their character would use most of the time and if they want they can switch them out between games. 🤷♂️
“I can’t stand complaining about a problem and at least not making an effort toward solving it.” Same, Ginny. And that’s why a lot of us love your videos. Here for positivity. Also, am I the weirdo for feeling like a module is immensely harder than a collaborative, player-driven homebrew? 13:54
Ok, posting on your videos for the first time because I only found them recently. A few things: - I haven't seen the mimic one yet, but now I'll have to for sure :D - That was, by far, some of the best advice I've seen someone provide; not just about playing a TTRPG of any kind, or being a DM, but of separating yourself from social media in general and realizing there's a difference between that and real life. Seriously, very well done! I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if I've only had the opportunity to DM one game at this point.
@ they really do! I was also inspired by your video of when you played D&D with them and I am now running a game with my MIL after we played a one shot and she really enjoyed it!
For me, a big part of keeping DND low stress is keeping the game low tech. The second most important thing is having a regular date/time to play rather than scheduling each session individually.
Genuinely appreciate this video. I'm not new to DND, but I never had the chance to play it as a kid and am excited to get into it with dnd2024 as an adult. Unfortunately, the people that are popularly followed on TH-cam for DND content really turned my excitement for a new version of something I've always wanted to experience into a stressful experience to dive into with their negativity and hypocrisy when I commented on their channels about how they were affecting the culture. Thanks for not telling me to "go touch some grass" for calling out toxic content creator behavior and keeping something like DND...fun and exciting.
This channel is pure gold. Thank you Ginny for this work, competency and dedication. I've been knowing d&d for 30 years now, and all you say in your videos are so right and pinpoint precisely things. This community is lucky to have you!
YES OMG! This is what I need. 😭❤️ I am often on the verge of anxiety attacks before sessions-heart palpitations, intense nausea, shaking- I do feel better an hour in or so, and I think I enjoy the game! ...but damn am I a blob of anxiety beforehand.
Oh gosh, I feel this so hard. 😭💛 It’s wild how something we genuinely enjoy can also make us so anxious, right? I’m really glad to hear you’re able to settle in once the game gets going, though. Just remember-you’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s okay to take it slow. You got this! 💪
This sounds a lot like the stage jitters I'd get just before showtime for ANY AND EVERY play I was in. Terrified that I'd flub a line, or forget my stage directions and accidently knock over a fake wall or something. But behind my stage fright, I always knew that after my first scene all (or at least, most) of my fears would be eclipsed by the pure joy of performing with my friends. Sure lines might get skipped, or the sound guy might jump the gun on a music cue, but at the end of the day, everyone is just there to have a good time.
I really appreciated this video. I think these sort of "let's just talk" videos are something I'd love to consume more of. Algorithm or no, I want to find a way to locate calming content. I will also say that I oddly felt a sort of despair about my game this week, "with all there is to worry about in the world, should I be playing my silly little game of elves and wizards", but I think joy is a close cousin to courage. It's why the existence of the shire is so important in lord of the rings. So I'm going to keep playing and not dismiss it as trivial. To play heroes is a sort of act of hope, and hope is always welcome.
Don't hate me. I just saw the DnD film on netflix and I loved it. I cried with joy so many times. When they said, "we need a druid." When the fighter had an amazing throwing weapon skill, and when a mimic showed up! Loved your mimic so much! ❤
Pointing out several things here: The guillotine earrings are awesome, that mimic looked absolutely amazing, and I don't know how many games I've also DM'd with "3 bullet points and a prayer". Alot of your videos have helped me run better games, so keep up the great videos, Ginny!
I am so glad my group has started playing again after a year of being on hold. The joy definitely overrides the anxiety once we get going. I tend to forget to comment on things but I'll try to make more of an effort to engage with and boost more positive things and let the negative ones disappear into the ether. (There are many channels I just won't watch due to the always negative feel of their titles and thumbnails.)
That’s awesome to hear that you guys are back and that the joy is outweighing the stress. It’s definitely a reminder that the good stuff is worth the effort!
I'm so happy that all my youtubers are putting out cozy content and mental-health healthy videos right now. I can see that it's on purpose and I'm so grateful. Also, stardew :) Also also, how is your mimic video not doing amazing in the algorithm?! It's so cool!
Ugh, yeah, I get that! Sometimes the tech that’s supposed to make things easier can actually end up making it feel more like a chore. It’s like adding another layer of prep, right? Hope you’ve found a balance that works better for you now! 😊
That's a really good point and something I've felt as well - adding possible tech issues to the anxiety of running a game can be a lot! I'm thankful for my super chill group that a) helps me with said tech issues and b) simply doesn't make them a big deal at all.
How come? I find running the game on a VTT a lot easier than doing it at a table, because it immensly reduces the amount of note taking I have to do as a GM (monster hp, initiative, who has which condition etc.)
I love VTTs to make it easier to find and play games when nobody in your area either plays or the few gaming stores have fixed-crowd games that aren't inviting. Nobody in my gaming group lives within a 90min of me and a couple in different times zones - VTT allows this to be done easiiy. But it adds a HUGE amount of additional work to DMs and some work to players if you want things to be TT-like. even basic map creation can be a nightmare. as noted, sometimes it's better to remember it's better to be good and just have fun than try to be "perfect".
Ginny, thank you so much for making this video. I think its a great reminder for creators, and a really important look behind the scenes for viewers. Our mental health is so important, and awareness of how our playforms work is equally so.
We had a player turned DM that seemed to enjoy making us have a bad time. Not giving clear directions, having to give super specific directions (ie “I grab the knob, twist, and pull” as opposed to “I open the door”), killing us willy nilly, etc. were all his forte. We brought up concerns and he subsided a bit but we ended up having to fire him as a DM (not just for these reasons) and now he’s out of the group and we’re having a good time again. Side note, I LOVE that shirt in the beginning!
Reminds me of a DM I once had who killed my character because I walked into a room and fell down a 10ft wide deep hole. I had asked for a description of the room before hand and there was no mention of a hole or even that it was dark. The dm's response was "well you didn't explicitly ask about the floor".
@@Catalyst767 something just like that happened to us. My character was charmed and taken away for a whole session. The party came looking for me and were actually at the prison I was in but didn’t see the sign and skipped going in because there was a big guard inside. But they didn’t know that there was a sign that said prison above it. Why? Because they didn’t look up.
@@TeamofLouie Yeah, it's really annoying when a DM doesn't tell you an obvious fact about something that your character should see or know. Then they punish you for not asking about it even though in your case it's a clearly signposted public building and in mine an obvious lack of a floor in a room.
I've also witnessed a DM stall a party for almost an hour trying to get through a single door they thought was locked because the player said "I want to push open the door". The DM said "it won't open, you think it's locked". He thought it was hilarious that we wasted an hour thinking the door was locked when really it was a pull forward door. Our characters obviously would have tried to open the door both ways and saying "push it open" was just a poor choice of wording which the DM got super pedantic on.. why? To make the game less fun I guess.
This video is a massive W in terms of meta-commentary on the games we play right now. Huge, huge gratitude here. I've struggled with this and so has my group. Big thanks, and we will have to be strong and organize to get through these next 4 years. You have my support. -Random Viewer.
Thank you very much. This is extremely topical and I hope many creators are talking about this in their respective contexts. You're the first person I've seen trying to explain how we got here.
Great video. As one of my DM friends once said, if you are anxious before a game, it's because you care. You care about your friends, having fun, and being creative. Caring is a good thing. ^^ Be kind to yourself and do what's best for your group.
I'm a D&D player in my late 40's, who got back into D&D after leaving it in my early 20's because I needed to focus on my studies. Your videos have always been fun and helpful, and it breaks my heart a little that comments on-line have left you feeling rubbish and dwelling on them, and detracted from the vast number of positivity in your comments. But I also get it - I tend to focus on my negative reviews for my business too. I hardly ever comment on TH-cam videos, but to add some weight to the positive ones - love your work, and your mission to make the TTRPG space more enjoyable, positive and safe for everyone. And I'm going to go watch the mimic video now. 😀
I watch very few D&D creators on youtube. Because as you mentioned, a lot are created just to fuel rage. There was one that would pop up on my feed every once and a while (and without naming them) I would click on a few just to see, but almost every title was "Wizards scandal just got words" and "New WOTC scandal worse than last" and every time I would click on their video, it made me angry, not at WOTC or anything else but at the creator. The thing they were talking about, I never saw as serious as they, and their comments did. It just felt like they were blowing things out of proportion. That entire story to say, thank you for being a good force in the D&D youtube community, because even if your titles are more negative sounding than others, at least your videos help people with any issues they may be having and not just throwing fuel on the fire. I can't think of any of your videos that are wholly negative.
Just wanted to say that both I and my partner found your mimic video independently, and we both laughed like drains; and the baby mimic is absolutely adorable, so I'm glad you shared it. And everything else. I'm always enjoying your skits and frequently find your videos thought-provoking.
Taking a moment at the beginning of this video to note that your life-size mimic is FANTASTIC, the video was fun and cool (I love watching things get made!), and it ABSOLUTELY does not deserve to have flopped in the slightest! I'd offer the mimic a big hug, but I'm pretty sure it'd swallow me whole.
That ending at 13:44 is all such amazing advice and not just for D&D but life in general. I always run / advertise games as "homebrew" even if nothing is homebrewed just because it means everything is in play and nothing can be "wrong". After trying to be the prefect DM for years, this change made this 130 pound ball of anxiety in human skin far less stressed. Now if a player wants to do something technically not in 5e but it wont break the game, sure go for it. Oh you played a new video game with a cool country / character you want to base yours on, go for it. Whatever adds fun, just do it (as long as everyone is ok with it).
Truly a refreshing take on our hobby. I'm going to go back to the "Mi-Maw the Mimic" video to make sure that I gave it a thumbs-up the first time I watched it.
Thanks for this, Ginny! This is something the whole fandom must address now: playing is supposed to be fun, not making our lives more stressful. Greeting from Mexico!
Long time listener, first time caller here… THANK YOU for doing this, your timing is perfect. I’m struggling a bit and your perspective was very helpful. Thank you for your care and for sharing your experiences!
Why make rage bait content when you can make Barbarian Rage Content? I'm glad I found your channel. It's a breath of fresh air in the community. D&D is, has always been, and will always be a game. Games are for fun. D&D/TTRPGs allow us to take what we want and ignore what we don't and make the best of it. People need to chill out.
Honestly, your channel and your videos always feel like a calm, warm and safe space, even though (or maybe because) you often talk about the stressful sides of DnD. As I read in another comment here, it almost feels like your videos actively calm anxiety.
This is why you’re my favorite D&D content creator. This kind of genuine, kind advice is something I really needed to hear. I am planning on DMing my first game in March and I have been so worried and stressed and watching the “wow this DM was absolute shit don’t be like them” videos. I really need to step back, focus on me and my players and what works for us. Also I loved your Mimic video. The people who didn’t watch really missed out!!
The mimic video is the one I shared with my free labor source (parents) as well. We love it! And your videos are top tier content. You make my day and my games better.
Thank you, Ginny. I think this is a video that was definitely worth making. It's like mental health awareness. GM's check on your players. Players check on your GM's. See what you can do to help each other out. I ran a campaign as a GM. I enjoyed it, but it took so much out of me that I haven't been able to bring myself to run another campaign. Don't be afraid to take a break, either. I ran one campaign and played as a character in 2 others consecutively for around 5 years. It will exhaust you. Don't be afraid to leave a group.
Love the messages here! Videos like this are really important, and it's so nice to see it come from someone involved in the hobby, speaking from a place of concern and stress instead of snotty judgment. Very well done, with the perfect amount of snark in the mix imo. Also, just want to say... I know it doesn't do anything for numbers, but my spouse - who adores mimics more than any D&D monster - and I loved the mimic video, and it got us brainstorming plans to do our own take, on the smaller end of the scale. So I hope it gets more views over time!
I've been loving all your videos lately!! you are really in your stride and it's excellent! Also, I am shocked more people werent into the mimic video, I thought it was so cool!!!
At first I wondered why I was feeling stressed watching this video, and then I remembered that I had my YT app set for 1.2x. Once I slowed it down so I could actually listen to what you were saying (maybe there’s a lesson there somewhere? 🤷♂️), I found you made some really good points in a very digestible way. Thanks for the reality (and well-being) check!
@@GinnyDi Indeed! I humbly request apologies for I did indeed send my wife a screengrab of the kitten instead of making her watch the entiere video... Please forgive me? Everyone involved in that video was adorable to watch, the kitten is more up her alley though. :)
Hey Ginny, just saying thank you for making a video about this. It feels especially important with what we’re all going through now in the world to have more people lend their voices to talk about the massive impact of ragebait. You handled the subject with a lot of grace keeping it mostly about TTRPGS and I respect that even if I would have gladly listened to your full opinions. Thanks for the day improvement and the extra inspiration to finally banish Twitter from my phone too.
I love this video it’s a great message and a much needed bit of constructive positivity. Also the mimic video is so good. The algorithm really sucks sometimes. Y’all better watch it!
Ahhh, thank you so much! 🥹💛 I’m really glad the message resonated. And yes, the mimic video deserves more love! The algorithm may be tough, but it’s comments like this that keep me going. 🫶
Your an amazing content creator and you inspire me daily to keep a happy attitude, I'm currently running my first d&d campaign as dm for 5 players....it can get nerve breaking, and its legit my first d&d game ever. 6 sessions in, we are all having a laugh still and going with the flow. I usually end up watching a video of yours before a session it brings my mood up reminds me its all for fun streaming it or not. The only peoples views that matter are yours and the players at the end the day, after each session i ask if everyone's ok and enjoying it still. Keep up the fantastic work and remeber the 96% that still love your content. Plus that mimic was bad ass and i want one so dam bad its unreal never stop being you.
I'm just about to start my first campaign as a DM TOMORROW! I have gotten so worked up about failing that I haven't been able to look at my plans to prep this week at all. My group is so supportive i just have unrealistic standards for myself. Your videos are always so kind and helpful. This one was exactly what I needed to hear and couldn't have come at a better time! Well I'm off to watch you make a mimic!
You made a life-size mimic?! That sounds like a delightful time for all, I'll have to watch that video immediately!! I'm glad you were able to get your thoughts out here. We've been poisoned by cynicism, irony and negative feedback loops online, and people talking about and providing actionable steps toward taking a broader view is very psychologically healthy.
I took a huge step back from TTRPGs for a few years because of stress and I wasn't getting to play or run the games I wanted. Your videos have helped me get back into this hobby again, accept what I can and can't do, and clarify how to overlap what I want with the player group that I have. Thank you for your help.
Thank you for making this video, and for being so honest about where you fit into the ecosystem! You're my go-to creator for D&D content, and who I point new players to, largely because of your positivity
I enjoyed the life sized mimic video. It was hilarious. Many is the time I have contemplated weird and wonderful projects like that and it is great to build the critter vicariously through someone else. On that note similarly enjoyed the funny centaur costume video.
Ahh, thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed both the mimic and the centaur shenanigans! 😂 Honestly, sometimes it’s just fun to dive into weird projects
@@GinnyDi One reason I like videos like that one is discovering new techniques and materials. Did not know that air drying Foam Clay existed. What a find.
this is a message we all need to hear. even if we're not having troubles in our games currently, dnd will always cause drama, as it's a social activity. in good games with good groups it may be on the micro scale of "man, that one boss' ability/attack felt really unfair this session", but at its worst, its friend group breaking or complete mediocrity for sessions on end. I think a lot of dnd trouble I've had though was more just in my youth or "dnd infancy", when i was still an amateur. bad decisions like not putting your foot down on the player who wants to make a busted, joke, or just bad character. playing with a total group of strangers because you're that desperate but getting too attached to making it work when it doesn't because you're still desperate for dnd. being scared of giving up the player or gm position for whatever reason. Most of these issues I've just learned are rookie mistakes of not only dnd, but basic social activities in general. like with any board game, party, or outing, it's always best to do it with a group of friends you're comfortable with and get along with who also want to do it just as much as you do. trimming the fat really simplifies a lot of things that previously bogged down my dnd games before. as of right now, i'm in a pretty good game with good players and haven't had any drama in years, but lord knows it didn't start out that way, and it's been a long time to get to this point.
Thank you for making your content! Honestly your sponsor segments are some of the only ones I watch all the way through because you make them entertaining in and of themselves instead of just a brand pitch.
2:35 as someone who is gonna have the session 0 for their first ever game in a few days and is bringing an elf wizard to the table, i'm feeling extremely called out rn
@@ianhackworth8826 thank you so much for asking, that's so nice! it went really well, i was one of two new people to the group but they made me feel so welcomed and comfortable, and luckily the barbarian of the group has been assigned official tank duty for a while so my 9hp wizard doesn't die at level 1
I'm glad you brought to our attention some of these habits/issues which are appearing from the online TTRPG space. As a player and DM (who has joined several online groups of strangers over the years) I know that fear of not making the right choice or feeling like I didn't 'perform' like I'd seen in actual play videos. In fact I'm currently making a character to join a CoS campaign with people I've only spoken to for 90 minutes in a Discord VC and creating the character (who is a class which I've never got round to playing) has caused me some anxiety, especially as I want to make a good impression on the group both to become friends with them but also because I for some reason feel like I need to prove or earn my place at the table because I'm the newcomer to their group. A very good, well timed and important discussion video to remind me that, even if the first few sessions feel like my character is struggling to fit into the story, they will mould and bend as time goes on to slot in better. And if they don't I can change them or get them killed off so I can try a different approach with more knowledge of the party, the setting and the play style 😅
Remember that being a lazy perfectionist is a real thing, and putting incoherent ideas down as prep to update it 30 minutes before the session is better than twiddling your thumbs.
I am not an anxious person whatsoever in general, but as a DM, DND def does stress me out :D It is all self induced due to putting too much expectation on myself. I feel like I cannot be qualified to DM unless I know absolutely everything about forgotten realms lore.
Thanks a lot for this! This video resonated so hard with me because once I started running my own campaign I had to stop watching "how to" DnD videos completely, or I would never stop second guessing myself. With so much to plan and do the worst thing you can allow yourself to happen is to let your insecurities take the wheel. Until you find your (and your players) own style don't force yourself to try new things unless you feel absolutely comfortable doing so, and remember that the goal is for everyone to have fun, including the guy/gal behind the DM screen. Did you catch 4-Sided dive last night? They name-dropped you. You c(sh)ould be Jester as an influencer! This video speaks to that as well. I would watch the heck outta some Ginny Jester content for contents sake.
Honestly, youre the only D&D content creator I watch but I love DM'ing. Your videos helped me become a better DM and I avoid most other D&D content due to some of the reasons you listed here. So thanks for the great videos, as always!
Hi, Ginny. Another well made and helpful video, as usual! Regarding the life-sized Mimic video: I'm just one viewer among many, so my opinion won't count for much. But it's possible it reflects other viewers' feelings as well. I respect your creativity and the effort you put into costuming and prop craft, but that is *not what I come to this channel for.* I have absolutely zero interest in props, figures, and other physical set dressing when it comes to nerdy fantasy hobbies such as D&D. One of my favorite things about playing D&D online is how accessible (to me) visual aids are. Instead of having to worry about whiteboards, graph paper, miniatures, etc., I can just whip up a few quick png files and throw them on Roll20. Again, what you do is very cool. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying. But I couldn't care less about any of that. I just enjoy hearing your opinions and advice on gaming. So I skipped the Mimic video because it simply doesn't interest me.
Yes, exactly! 🙌 That’s such an important distinction.
They are most certainly playing to having fun, but they are also making a product to be enjoyed.

The Mimic video was truly Amazing. You are a treasure, and a breath of fresh air in these trying times. Thank You for what you do.
Thank you for being a “vaguely teal” light in the gaming TH-cam space. Watching your videos actively reduces my overall anxiety levels.
I second this.
Yes! (In most channels) the stuff that "gets the clicks" is loud, energetic, explosive, rage-inducing, anxiety-causing, and is often bright, with "hot" colours, and all that combined tends to cause my photosensitivity and noise-sensitivity to spike.
In the SCA, we had a recurring saying "We do this because it is fun."
It was a constant reminder that if it stopped being fun - for whatever reason - to do it less, or do it with less intensity, or stop doing it entirely for a bit.
yes! SCA!
I'm really thinking about getting involved in the SCA, it sounds so interesting.
@@homeiswonderland it can be a blast. It can also be expensive and sometimes a bit cliquish. My major advice is to play at the level you want to - if that's super-researched super-authentic, that's great. If it's way more casual, that's great, too. Take care!
love seeing this a week before war of the rams
TRUTH!
Hey I watched that Mimic video like 4 times while working on a big LEGO build. Just incidentally kept clicking it. I'm doing my part!
I honestly don't understand why that flopped. It was such a fun video. Cat-mimic alliance alone was worth the watch
There's a cute kitten in it for goodness sakes!!😻

I loved that video! How could it be a flop? I don’t understand people anymore…
I watched and enjoyed the heck out of it! One of these days I might even try and replicate it when I am not feeling lazy or involved in other things. So, maybe, some day, probably, for sure!
Those earrings are so sharp, they're regime-changing!
Literally came into the comments to just gush over how much I loved these earrings. There's so cute and very appropriate when casually mentioning how we have enough to be stressed out about in real life to be stressing over DnD too.
You could say that they are cutting edge fashion...
went into the comments to find if we were talking about the earrings lol
Still undecied wether or not the Guillotine or the Longsword earrings are better. That being sad, I totally own a BG 3 char rocking sword earrings.
They would look rediculous on me, but if I were a girl I´d want some in real life... Okay, I have a sword pendant, that will do too, I guess.
They're amazing.
"Comparison tends to roll high on Sleight of Hand and sneak off with your Joy." Ginny-fucious saying of Deep Wisdom, phrased so cutely
oh my gosh, I love this! “Ginny-fucious” might be my new favorite title 😂
This made me smile so big! Perfect D&D rewrite of a classic phrase
@15:24 "Bored of your character? Change it. Tired of the campaign you're running? End it. Unhappy with your group? Leave it. This is one of the few places in our lives where we have absolute power."
That last line there especially hits hard for me, not because I'm unhappy with my current group, but because like a lot of people right now I'm feeling a lot of weight on my shoulders from things that I have absolutely no control over and this way of spending my precious free time with my friends is all I have left to dictate for the benefit of my own wellbeing.
Good news! Your videos always make me feel better, and that life sized mimic was totally worth the 3 days you spent on it!

There's always room for learning as long as we're breathing.
I can't believe the mimic video flopped! How could that possibly be!? It's so good! You're a fantastic storyteller AND artist!
im so glad you mentioned the spell prep thing!

Ok, posting on your videos for the first time because I only found them recently. A few things:
- I haven't seen the mimic one yet, but now I'll have to for sure :D
- That was, by far, some of the best advice I've seen someone provide; not just about playing a TTRPG of any kind, or being a DM, but of separating yourself from social media in general and realizing there's a difference between that and real life. Seriously, very well done! I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if I've only had the opportunity to DM one game at this point.

They worked so hard they deserve tons of views!!
@ they really do! I was also inspired by your video of when you played D&D with them and I am now running a game with my MIL after we played a one shot and she really enjoyed it!
Same I've loved all the videos your parents get a feature in. Super wholesome 😌
Having a "checking in" video from time to time is great. Sometimes, people need to breathe, or touch grass, or find a different way to relax.

UGH SAME. It's hard but the goblin hoard must mob onward.
Pointing out several things here:
The guillotine earrings are awesome, that mimic looked absolutely amazing, and I don't know how many games I've also DM'd with "3 bullet points and a prayer".
I started feeling this a couple years ago. Especially when I brought in virtual tabletop software and other computer based assistance.
@ I run a lot more on the fly games and sketching, maps and such out on wet erase surfaces is easier, and quicker I guess.
The lifesized mimic and the baby mimic WERE SO COOL!
Damn, that mimic looks good.

@GinnyDi indeed she is.
A lurker? I thought it was a mimic!😅@@GinnyDi
Sounds like he had every reason to be stressed. You guys not so much?

We need more positivity in the TTRPG space.
Those guillotine earrings are a mood
Same. I think I know who you’re talking about too. Had to unfollow them.
You know it! Mama Mimic deserves all the love!

Don't be afraid to take a break, either. I ran one campaign and played as a character in 2 others consecutively for around 5 years. It will exhaust you.

Loading up the Mimic video now, hope you have a pleasant day!
EDIT: There's a kitten in the mimic video! 10/10, no notes.
I shouldn't have buried the lede, huh! 🥰
Ginny, you are a treasure. I regularly ask my players to watch your videos, including my kids. Thank you.
your sponsorship clips are amazing, one of the few that I don’t skip over.
Thank you for not skipping over it! ❤
Always the right video at the right time!
Your content has been transcendently good lately. Thank you, and stay effervescent ✨
How did it go? :)
@@Lightcaster123 That's what I like to hear!
I am shocked that life-sized mimic didn't perform well. In my books it is one of the highlights! Something dnd-esqe, that is not a piece of advice
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it 🥰
0:27 When 69k views is a flop you did something right! I watched it and really enjoyed it.
Thank you for being thoughtful and KIND. Every time a see a video by you it cheers me up and relaxes me.
Remember that being a lazy perfectionist is a real thing, and putting incoherent ideas down as prep to update it 30 minutes before the session is better than twiddling your thumbs.
I am not an anxious person whatsoever in general, but as a DM, DND def does stress me out :D
It is all self induced due to putting too much expectation on myself. I feel like I cannot be qualified to DM unless I know absolutely everything about forgotten realms lore.
I feel that 😅 I think even the most well-adjusted person would get stressed with something as massive as Forgotten Realms lore.
9:36 I disagree actually. I would love a video of just like, compiled GM affirmations.
Once I feel confident enough (or when I take a break) I'll be back, promise :D
I loved the mimic video! I watched it a couple times while working in my woodworking shop! Keep up the amazing vids!
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH GINNY
You inspired me to finally get my family to play dnd
I hope they enjoy it!! 🥰
@@GinnyDi me too I've made my own miniatures out of cardboard some are tokens some are kinda 3d I will film tomorrow of my minis and I also made a dm screen
Wow this is awesome! Have a wonderful time
Did you catch 4-Sided dive last night? They name-dropped you. You c(sh)ould be Jester as an influencer! This video speaks to that as well. I would watch the heck outta some Ginny Jester content for contents sake.
Yes! A couple of people mentioned it to me! 🥰 I'll have to go and watch it asap.
Man, those are some sharp earrings!
Regarding the life-sized Mimic video:
I'm just one viewer among many, so my opinion won't count for much.
0:22 So, is this really Ginny, or did she get eaten by the mimic?😮
