I literally *just* started CONSIDERING getting a small dog as my first pet since being married, since we live in an apartment, so I am soooo happy to see this type of content from Stonnie Dennis of all people!!! 😂❤ It must be a sign!!!!
My suggestion is to get a dog that is from a working breed but not bred for hard work, stuff like terriers, that way it has the intelligence and desire to work with you, but if it’s from a serious working breeder they may be too energetic and driven
I love your gentle training and the genuine love and guidance you give them! You seem to treat them like they are your four legged children and I am here for it! Thank you for such practical advice ❤
Currently without a dog. I've always had large breeds that can easily accompany me on hikes. This video opened my eyes to the practicality of small breeds, especially in my senior years. Thank you! 👍 I chuckled at how Baker turned to check on the cameraman a couple times when you were walking up the hill. 🐾 Tractor footage? Absolutely yes. One of my favorite TH-cam channels involves heavy equipment rescues. Us gals can like it just as much as guys! 😅
I’m a small dog person for sure. Dogs are extremely adaptable, my small dog for example was raised to be a “dog”. He’ll hike, swim in lakes, chase small animals, and play hours. I know owners with big dogs who treat them like little babies and they act as such. There is nothing inherently less “dog” about a little dog.
How wonderful to find your channel Stonnie. Such a refreshing delight to see you out walking with your little dog who’s obviously having a ball in such an amazing playground. You are such a calming and caring influencer/guide and relate so naturally to your dog, no matter what size. Your farm could be forgiven for being one of ours here in New Zealand, minus the coyotes, snakes and bears! We are so fortunate when walking in nature. Your daughter out reading in her ‘side by side’ pretty much says it all about the great parenting she’s had/has. Thank you for sharing your dog knowledge in your beautiful natural environment. Baker is one lucky wee dog!
Best dog ever, in a lifetime of dog ownership, was a Westie. He was always ready for an adventure, great with kids, moved to Europe with us ( his own seat on a Swissair trans-Atlantic flight, thanks to a kind flight attendant who suggested a blanket on the empty seat next to me, so he could get out of his carrier), perfectly behaved in restaurants, and just fine spending time alone in our apartment while we were at work. All that would have been impossible with a large dog. Still tear up after 30+ years when I see a Westie.
Having lived rural 49 of my 66 years i find the eagle & coyote terror a bit amusing. I'd love to see some tractor adventures! I so appreciate the time and effort you put into your channel. For me in my life season i watch because we're like minded and due to health circumstances i am down to one very small dog...im afraid raising dogs is all in my rearview at this time...your channel is helping me cope with my present life challenges. I really can't thank you..and your camera man enough. You help make the world a better place.
Ringo started his outdoor adventures as soon as i got him. He grew up climbing anything he could, now he's my little mountain goat!! Hid behind a LOT of trees....great for reminding him to be aware of where I am!! 🐾🇨🇦 Your property is absolutely amazing!!!
My brother and sister recently bought a homestead in Texas and they started a TH-cam channel and they show everything they're doing with the property. Like having someone come out and get all the rattle snakes to my brother using his tractor and so on. People love their channel. So yes, show us what you are doing!
I grew up with large dogs and loved them to no end. As an adult living in condos and only under 20 lbs dogs I have a special place in my heart for little dogs. You are much closer to dogs when you have to carry and protect them. It’s a special bond.
Love this post Stonie, my big dog passed away at the end of the pandemic. Due to three serious accidents back to back, a large dog is no longer an option for me. I'm also 65 yrs old. I've ALWAYS had one to thee dalmatians as an adult. I adore the breed. Now I'm recovering and I can't give dals the life they deserve. I discovered chihuahuas. I'm shocked at the discrimination that we have experience. Way, way more that me and my dals ever have. My dogs are trained, they are vocal 🎵 and they are NOT ankle biters.😂
I worked in an animal hospital for a while. Most Chihuahuas were considered piranha dogs. Not because of the breed but because of the owners. Tiny dogs are cute when they bite right?. At least that was the attitude most had. It's the owners fault. I met some that were wonderful dogs.
Love the content Stonnie! Just got a field lab and your training has been very helpful. Even though he’s a chocolate! Nice to see small dogs getting some adventure!
My cousin used to train German shepherds. she changed one day to corgis. She said that gsd were fear biters and cortis were actually ferocious when they needed to be. She ran the show circuit thing. My first dog was a dachshund he was wonderful. Smart and loyal. I still miss him . I was 9 I'm 66 now.
You’ve got a great way of teaching people about what you’re into, you’d probably make tractor fans out of all of us dog lovers. Post the tractor videos Uncle Stonnie!
❤ this. I have a 5 lb chihuahua and we’re doing scentwork, agility, and trick dog training. She goes to classes with big dogs and does really well. We’ve had to work through some fears, but she started going everywhere with me at an early age. She went on her first road trip vacation at 12 weeks. I have so much fun with her. She’s really good at staying quiet and hidden in her little bag when I have to take her in a business with me b/c I can’t leave her in the car in 100 degree TX heat. I love big dogs too, but with my lifestyle in an apartment and going places both city and out in nature, she’s just perfect. And I can get away with taking her a lot of places I couldn’t with a big dog b/c she’s well behaved and quiet. I’ve worked with her similar to this video, but on a long line b/c we’re on public trails and parks (and I’m just a little more protective. 😂)
I’d never had a small dog before but a mini poodle/Chinese crested puppy threw herself at me and that was it, home she came lol. Fluffy not hairless 😂 I have a standard golden doodle and she learned from her. Fearless, runs like the wind, swims, climbs. Amazing little dog, does exactly what the big one does, a massive personality in a 7kg body 😊
I'm in Toronto, Ontario and the number of coyotes is high, surprisingly. Along the ravines, creeks and even straying into public parks and biting people, not a lie. I suspect they are drawn to the trash left behind, lost their fear of humans or the increase in dog ownership since the pandemic started. I have 2 havanese, my go to alarm system but mostly a family pet, small house=small dog. My 12lb female was a huge joy for my late father, 94yrs old, she was like a 2yr child with him, the smile she brought to his face, the conversations he had with her, she still remembers his name.
Our Westie did the same for my retired father-in-law. He'd walk him around town in Geneva, Switzerland, and interact with people who would come say hello to the adorable dog.
You made me chuckle with the plea for tractor interest. I bet I've seen just about everything you should and shouldn't do with a smallish tractor here at our place with my husband and our tractor. You haven't lived til you get it buried in deep mud at the farm! For many years I was not a fan of small dogs. After working for a couple decades around dogs in the veterinary setting I began to have a change of heart. Most of the problem is the way they are treated/trained by the people. I've met some small dogs with real personalities. I have begun to pursue the adoption of a medium or small dog to be our adventure dog. I love big dogs but with my age, abilities, and how we travel a small companion just works better. Really enjoyed this video.
Oh Stonnie, You are open minded and the best advocate for all breeds. Was raised with English Springer Spaniels. My current girl is an Australian Shepherd. WOW Talk about adventure dog. But I gotta say... Mini Goldendoodle/ hummmm need to do some homework.
I don't worry about coyotes getting my little Rat Terrier, because her best buddy is an Anatolian Shepherd. (The Anatolian lives in our goat pasture.) But I do know of dogs getting snatched right out of fenced yards by coyotes (mostly in semi-arid Eastern Oregon, where we lived for a while). And my step-father had a little mixed-breed dog named Taco that he took hiking with him all the time. One time, near Mt. Hood in Oregon, my step-father heard a slight sound behind him and looked around to see a cougar with Taco's head in it's mouth. My step-father gave his best Marine drill-sergeant roar, and kicked the cougar in the jaw, then kicked it again when it didn't let go after the first one. At that point, it released Taco and ran off shaking it's head (step-father, rather regretfully, thought he might have broken it's jaw; I thought, if so, he might have saved the life of some future hiker). Taco survived, but had a few vet visits. I think the concerns for little dogs are legitimate, if perhaps a bit overblown in most cases.
Id love some videos of small dogs riding big tractors! Keep up the great work uncle Stoney. Im so excited I got my pup out mountain biking and camping this summer and she loves it. All your great advice on adventure training really helped us have a great time. Thanks so much. I joke that Kara would be a two bite Blondie for a coyote. There are a bunch of them in our city that like to hang out in the river valley.
Stonnie, I am learning a ton and enjoying your videos. I will be buying a dog to be my companion. Yes, show you working on your tractor, felling trees, target shooting, hunting, going to town, traveling, and (slaying coyotes 😂). You are a practical and wise man.
LOVE my lil Feist mix. 12 FABULOUS pounds. Raised up on Stonnie video’s and whole food. She goes everywhere with me. I absolutely raised her by the motto “the more manners you teach them the more likely you will take them with you, the more you take them with you the better their manners will be!” I tell this to people all the time and refer them to this channel. Yeah small dogs!
I live in northern MN and I live in the woods on a lake. My next door neighbors had a litter of foxes born under her porch. Plus,we have a large, mostly dead tree on the shore next to the lake that the bald eagle loves to sit in and watch for fish. I have a 16 pound Pekingse who was a rescue. I am always aware of my surroundings and what's lurking around. Not to mention the coyotes, osprey, owls, wolves, and bears ( who have gotten into my garbage cans next to the house 3x's in the last 2 weeks) Just be viligiant
In Arizona we have birds of prey and coyotes. I've spoken to people who've had their small dogs snatched. The rattlesnakes, well you can hire a rattlensake aversion trainer. But the giant birds, coyotes, bobcats, and scorpions...
Mr. Dennis, you are an outstanding human being! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your beautiful family and your adventures with us. My husband and I enjoy your videos very much!
We have a Standard Poodle 65 pounds and a small Maltese around 10 pounds. Both are equally awesome and get along great. Funny to see them play together.
My Anatolian Shepherd weighs about 120 lbs, and my Rat Terrier weighs about 13 lbs, and they've been best friends since they were puppies (the Anatolian is about three months older than the Rat Terrier -- she weighed 45 lbs, and the Rattie weighed 4 1/2 lbs, when we got the little Rattie -- so fun to watch them play together. The Anatolian has always been so tolerant and gentle with the little dog.).
I brought home Lassie 8 wks old. Applying your methods & fun to watch him learn with confidence. A coyote did run behind my fence dog jumped in my arms. I got big & loud coyote ran off. In MN coyotes & eagles here. Just be aware of your surroundings & be ready.
reminds me of when my stepdad took my 30lb mutt to play in the woods 4 miles away from home and my dog at 1 year old decided to just leave him there and walk 4 miles home. he even knows what "charlie go home" means.
My little boy and I love watching your videos ! secretly I hope he picks up on your lessons haha. We’d love tractor footage! Also, just realized at the end of the video you had a hard hat on the whole time lol. Safety first!!
You are so right. The french poodles are awesome. I didn't know until I had one. They Are so smart, joyful and cute. Sometimes people make them be annoying and all of them pay for the miseducated. They became my favourite dog ever equal to the st. Bernards. But the these don't come in a small size so now I couldn't have one. They have to be really amazing to reach st. Bernards cleverness and loveliness. And french poodles are. Thank you, your videos are great.
I love all dogs. Labs, Chesapeakes, Wired Hair Pointers, Collies etc etc you get it big happy dogs. Then, I realized I would never own another dog that I cannot easily pick up, carry if injured, need to transfer etc etc. Now I am totally on board with Power to the little dogs. You are correct you’ve got to spend time with them doing normal things, challenge them to be dogs. Consider your life style. I have Cairns now and love them to death. Inherited a very senior Shih Tzu and she just morphed into the best happy active dog.
My shih Tzu was great. She was so easy to tire out with a short walk, but she could keep up on 3-4 mile hikes and would even swim with me. She did everything my field bred lab and german shepherd can do with me. The only difference was she would be really tired after lol. But it's nice having a tired dog, and small dogs are easy to tire out. Right now I'm sticking to labs but when I get older I will probably switch over to smaller dogs
I love your content, Stonnie, and I have learned so much from watching you. You have such a big heart and gentle soul . . . 😊❤ Personally, I am a medium/big dog person. I grew up with Goldens and am drawn to those size and types of dogs. As an adult, I've had Pembroke corgis on two different occasions - they're as small as I would get. Sadly, both are gone and my family of non-dog lovers will not allow me another dog. Some day . . . when kids are gone, I will try again with another Golden or Lab. Maybe I'll throw in a corgi, too, just for the fun of it!❤
Another great video from Uncle Stonnie! Personally I'd love to hear about what small breeds do you like the most. Me personally, despite being born and raised around working line Malinois and currently having one, I'm pretty convinced that my next dog will be a small breed. Ideally, something like a Border Terrier, but if I had to put limits, I'd say whatever's shorter than an Airedale Terrier, taller than a Norfolk Terrier, and lighter than a Staffordshire Bull Terrier would be ok. If I had to name like three breeds, I'd say Border Terrier, Cairn Terrier, or Volpino Italiano. But what about you Stonnie? What are the smaller breeds that you enjoy the most?
Tractor clearing yes! How about how to set up obsticles in your yard ( meaning) viewers to set up and help their dogs be more comfortable with the outside world.
What whistle are you using? My old dog lying next to me just popped up when she heard it. I had a problem recently when she disappeared for 30 minutes. First time she has wandered off in 12 years. We have hiked together since I adopted her at 10 weeks. So I am wondering if I had a whistle she would have heard it and come back.
Stonnie... I was planning on getting a doberman for my retirement dog... Have realized that I could not match their energy level. I have now decided to get a small dog. Have you ever trained a dog called a Brussels Griffon? I enjoy your channel :)
If you like dobermans, but can't match their physicality, you might wanna check the Miniature Pinscher out, they're basically travel sized dobermans. Or if you don't want something THAT small, there's also the Standard Pinscher and the Manchester Terrier that still have that Doberman-esque style, but without the larger size.
I have fox, coyotes, black bear, hawks and owls in my yard. I stay with my small dogs and make noise during the day. At night I have a small, fenced area where I can potty them when it's dark. I have been hiking and camping with my little adventure buddies for years and haven't had any problems. You just need to stay alert and be careful. My current adventure buddies are papillons less than 10 pounds each.
I have 2 Yorkies, 1 silver and tan and a partie Yorkie black n white. I live near a really nice park by the beach in the PNW. I take them off leash almost everyday. These 2 small dogs can go for a pretty long hikes, over a lot of obstacles, and I only have to give an assist now and then They both have big personalities, and I'm often complimented on how well they listen and behave. Small dogs are like any other dog, the more you put into them, time effort they will give back.
In my area coyotes can be seen during the day. When my dachshund was young, he was attacked by a coyote while my wife was walking him. They’ve even tried to lure my GSD down the driveway. She has great recall and won’t go to far without checking in with me.
Yup, teach 'em early to keep watch of where you are so they're near that protection of their leader. What a good little pup. And yes, folks need to see how to teach their dogs how to behave around equipment. Channels that are about "other things", I believe their viewership increases when the channel's co-host is their dog. People love dogs and will watch the channel just to see what the dog they love is up to on that video.
Love this, thankyou. I have a super dooper mini poodle who is my little best mate and loves an adventure. Not a guard dog but definitely an alarm dog 😀❤️
You’ve put into words something I’ve done naturally. I’ve owned five dogs over my lifetime and none of them grew up to be the run away kind. I guess you’ve explained why.
My medium/small mutt fits in my small travel trailer much better than a lab. No more need to move the dog so the fridge door can open, and dog and bed can be lifted up and moved when access to other places is needed. Poop is smaller also, when it has to be picked up and bagged. Less food is inhaled. But I do miss the demeanor of my old lab. Can't somebody work to breed smaller labs? The quest seems to be for larger labs and not for more compact sized retrievers.
A medium sized spaniel, ranging from the larger Springer to the smaller Cocker is a good compromise between big and small. Furthermore, if you get one from a working line, it will always be up for adventures on land or water from dawn to dusk. They have also been bread to work with people, so keep checking in when they do their side missions.
Great video! Our neighbors have issues with coyotes at dusk at our country property. Part of the issue is that we aren’t at the property regularly enough. Likely, that property smells more like coyote than it does people. During the day there are no issues and we enjoy working the land and adventuring the dogs there - even my little 13 pound terrier mix loved it when he was alive. Lots of wildlife smells for them and lots of rabbit poo! Stonnie, what is your B channel’s name?
Ok, so you might not want this question, but here goes: what would you get to clear a field without a tractor? We have an overgrown field (brush and small trees) that needs some clearing. There's no tractor and there isn't going to be one, so I'd love your take on good tools or techniques that don't include a car payment (like a tractor).
What about a control burn. In my small town someone wants to build a church on a property that had an old barn. They pulled it apart and burned it piece by piece. Was actually sad. Smelled bad too.
The outdoor problem we had with our Chihuahua/JRT mix when she was younger was that she would sometimes follow her nose instead of following/listening us. Now that she's 13y, she's put her hunting days behind her.
l have more trouble with coyotes in the city than the country. l live in Seattle and we now have coyotes in all the big city parks- Arboretum, Discovery, Volunteer, Seward- we even have deer in them too. My chihuahua and l were followed by a coyote after l yelled at him and put my dog on a leash, even after l picked her up. I finally threw rocks at him and he left. I know Dachsunds can fight off a coyote. Maybe there’s more food for coyotes out in the country?
That ain't a black lab. L'il ankle biter, lol. Hey, it's just jest. Fun to poke at the little yappers. Amusing, Baker is being stealthy quiet out there. Of course, Baker is under training by Stonnie. I'd love to see some hounds. If you can train a hound, you've got some finesse. I def wanna see the tractor footage. Land cleaning/clearing is essential!

My dad would agree! He restores Farmalls and his 1948 Cub is his pride and joy.

Make it 2 small dogs and you and the dogs will have a much better time. Good luck

That little guy gets around quite well!
thank you Stonnie D!Just the info I was looking for!
Next video Stonie will have a Gucci haversack
Stonnie -we 100% want to see more of your tractor and how you are clearing the area! Love it and super informative - yes to tractor footage!

But I do know of dogs getting snatched right out of fenced yards by coyotes (mostly in semi-arid Eastern Oregon, where we lived for a while).
Your daughter gave a nice smile after your compliment. That dog is stinkin' cute and a go getter!
Love this I have 5 rescue pugs and they shadow me everywhere on my farm … little dogs can adventure too !!
One advantage to smaller dogs that you didn’t mention: Small poops. I had a Chesapeake Bay retriever and a Doberman. I picked up some poop in my day…
Also cheaper to feed, so you can feed them the really high quality food without breaking the bank.
Your best intro by far!!! Uncle Stonnie with a sack pup
Great video, love the little adventure dog. And yes, would enjoy videos of your equipment in action!!!
Amazing video
Thank you and your family for the time, energy, and effort you put into the community you have created
Hi Stonnie, great video. My next dog should be small due to my age. BTW flip that little ear back in the first part 😅
My son adores keeper of the lost cities!!!
You have such a big heart and gentle soul . . . 😊❤
Personally, I am a medium/big dog person.
Yes Stonnie, I love tractor/dirt work. Please include some.
That dog is the cutest little thing, she knows we’re she’s best off.
My terriers go everywhere with me. They are very sturdy and adventuresome. And they like to hunt
Ha! She remembered that first log she walked along at your request. She wasn't too enamored about doing it with that 2nd log. 😅
Stonnie... I was planning on getting a doberman for my retirement dog... Have realized that I could not match their energy level. I have now decided to get a small dog. Have you ever trained a dog called a Brussels Griffon?
I enjoy your channel :)
They are really great little dogs, but their nose is too short for my liking. They have more trouble in the heat
Great video Stonnie! Could you please make a video about your tractors? Also I'd love to see more of this adventure area.
I have 2 Yorkies, 1 silver and tan and a partie Yorkie black n white. I live near a really nice park by the beach in the PNW. I take them off leash almost everyday.
These 2 small dogs can go for a pretty long hikes, over a lot of obstacles, and I only have to give an assist now and then
They both have big personalities, and I'm often complimented on how well they listen and behave.
Oh heck yeah‼️ Show me some tractor path clearing footage…I dare ya🤓
Sure Tractor content is fun, lets see some. Making your day... :)
Every time you whistle, my Lagotto Romagnolo hops up on my chair to figure out who is whistling at her. 😂
Cute little dog.
Ok, so when are you starting the tractor channel?
here for the dogs and the tractors!
If Stonnie is carrying a dog in a purse then anything is possible 😂
I've got plenty of books I am glad to donate, and I need the space. Amusement from this channel is legal consideration.
Actually it happens more in neighborhoods in busy towns, they have been seen in downtown Chicago. Coyotes are a big Nuisance in the Burbs.
Love the name ❤
Lovely fam!!!! ❤
I have a Bichon I’ve trained to be free range off the leash. It’s amazing. 🤩 I want a micro doodle 😊
The outdoor problem we had with our Chihuahua/JRT mix when she was younger was that she would sometimes follow her nose instead of following/listening us. Now that she's 13y, she's put her hunting days behind her.
That sure is a cute little dog😊
l have more trouble with coyotes in the city than the country. l live in Seattle and we now have coyotes in all the big city parks- Arboretum, Discovery, Volunteer, Seward- we even have deer in them too. My chihuahua and l were followed by a coyote after l yelled at him and put my dog on a leash, even after l picked her up. I finally threw rocks at him and he left.
I know Dachsunds can fight off a coyote. Maybe there’s more food for coyotes out in the country?
The wife and I are on our last German shepherds and maybe a small dog would be in our future. Tractors are cool too.
Hi Stonnie😊 what kind of whistle do you use?
That dog is hilarious! We are getting a Fox red puppy soon she's 3 week now.
