It doesn't :| The only thing it does somewhat well is if you secondary-build it for Co-Op or Ops so you can somewhat mitigate the absolutely horrendous dispersion. In general, you throw HE at people and wait for a broad-side to show up where you pray RNG helps you hit a few shells. There are instances where the dice pull through and you'll delete something at 20kms, but they are VERY rare. What is most fun is doing drive-bys where you can make use of the shell volume to wreck other ships. But that's only if you don't eat a Citadel right away and go off to Port :)))
Smolensk, Jinan, Colbert, etc work best in a division. You just don’t get team spotting anymore, so they’re incredibly difficult ships to use. They’re much better in mode shuffle where people actually push in and get spotted.
The heavy Italian SAP from the battleship line really put a damper on Smolensk because that stuff can and will citadel you if you are flat broad side and it does an absurd amount of damage. In that vein, I would like to put forward my request for a Marco Polo.
As a Smolensk main, my friend and me use this ship with his minotaur for some rage inducing times. Our only goal is to make the red team uninstall. Just doing our part since WG wants to kill this game so bad. :)
Keep in mind that Colbert's max dpm isn't attainable 99% of the time because there's only a very narrow angle and range combo where all turrets can be brought to bear in a target. Smolensk doesn't have that issue with its mythical Soviet quad guns.
It's kind of funny how people complain about over-penning the cit of very lightly armoured ships... but that legit happened IRL. We have the ship in game that experienced it. Lets not forget Johnston took 3 AP shells from Yamato and basically only lost one turret, and a bit of engine power. So to translate to in game, engine knocked out and turret destroyed. If Yamato had known she was shooting at a Destroyer, she would have likely loaded HE or possibly even her San-shiki-dan round. It may have been an AA round, but it was also an incendiary shrapnel round, and likely would have made paste out of the Johnston's bridge and deck, but as Yamato thought she was firing at a cruiser she had AP loaded, betting the target would have enough armour to arm the shells. When the shells hit Johnston they over-penetrated the ship leaving her mostly unharmed. At least relatively speaking.
The overpen mechanic in game would be fine if you also got the off-set; Yama could easily have hit an engine room or magazine on Johnston and that would have been that. Give me an insta-kill option if I hit the right spot (and I don't mean the lame detonation mechanic) and I'll live with overpens.
That ship is so OP it isn't funny at times. BBs relied a lot more on RNG than skill compared to higher tier ships so the cesare guns rewarded players who knew how to aim (more so that other ships at the tier) hence with it was the "seal clubber" of the time.

Smolensk....The Soviet Firestarter which was sliightly nerfed by the captain skills changes which either you could have 19.2 of orbital shells for 4.5 sec reload...or 16.6 with sub 4 sec reload
Been here since closed beta and Smolensk is by far the best day to day cruiser....and the most consistent for damage. Love that thing. I play it way more than the super ship cruisers, and it consistently brings the pain. In a platoon with another light cruiser with smoke and you will piss off the whole world of bb and dd drivers......It's a fun ship to play and makes great credits.....glad I got it.
Surprisingly honest review, i really did not expect this👍 The first 3 games are pretty common examples of Smolensk games. Indeed everything will run over 20 km or there is no vision at all. Thx for showing all the shit aswell, that people may have no idea about
In the 2nd game, if he doesnt abandon Shima at cap C, but help him kill Hayate, they would hve got that cap. He also choose not to cap B at 12:30, that contributed to the loss.
my personal most played ship by far (around 1000 battles). I love how funny it is (when you play it, otherwise is infuriating). It can be one shotted (and i get it often, first one to die). Try and play it with Kutsnetzov, when you ambush the enemy's dd at the start, you'll get an additional consumable charge, and youl'll get that often Go only for range, 13.6km won't do it, you gotta rush at the start to island spots really quick and always avoid getting crossfired. when targeted by bb over 14km, you gotta maneuver a lot, even with speed changes. Otherwise you'll get nuked. Always use hydrophone, and never trust smoke. Use AP as often as you can, when you get a broadside bb with huge superstructure, set a couple of fires and get the ap ready. I've done around 6-7k salvos on GK, on montana you can get easily 5k, same with maine and vermont. This cruiser should be called "dd's bane"
Try out hagostaeldmann, he only runs lighthouse Salem, looks totally insane. He also goes into a lot of theory about how to make each ship relevant to getting wins. Note he does not care about damage numbers at all, only battle impact and how to get wins. Learnt a lot in the month or so I have watched him. Extremely educational.
His lighthouse Goliath was ridiculous as well. Especially leading the charge into caps to wipe out enemy dds in the first few minutes. Insane how differently a 65% plus player thinks to the rest of us.
As you point out, this ship is absolutely dependent on spotting. Which means that you have to rely on your teammates. Which is a death sentence in WoWs. Unless you have a div mate who you can chat with, it almost isn't worth the gamble on this ship.
@@professormoriarthus I think its very legit if you are a experienced shima player, I would not try to play that style and build without rocking shima for a while first and having a 21 point captain in it. But its a hilarious DD brawler with full gun build and 8km torps, it surprises a lot of other dd's and because of you detect you usually get to dictate the engagement which is a pretty big advantage.

Eh, US 127s mean you can't really hit anything past like 12km because of the ballistics, max range build on flint and Atlanta is like orbital bombardment level ballistics

A thing I remember from the time that both Thunderer and Smolensk where available. People where complaining so much about the Smolensk when thunderer was worse to face. But hey Russian bias amirite
Smolensk then Thunderer a month later was the beginning of the end for WOWS for good players, who cared about game balance and not wanting a camp/kite meta. Smolensk was brutally overpowered and would sit in smoke the entire game obliterating anyone who dared go toward the enemy (and had a hydro and torps if by some miracle you got close to them) and players would sit broadside on because of it's troll armour that meant you always over penned. Then Thunderer came out and did what Smolensk did but could do it sitting in spawn.
I am missing communication on your side. Press these keys; focus fire, need help, support ship, need spotting, need smoke (combined with ping on map). Some people listen to that. Sometimes that is the edge you need to win.
The thing about the Smol is that the moment you open up the red team abandons that flank and decides to try their luck pushing elsewhere. I find it better to let them push to about 13 kms before revealing myself.

Well, sitting in your smoke (torp magnet) ain't the smartest move, but sadly, DDs really aren't rewarded that well for spotting. If you've got a Halland or something like that, it doesn't matter, but otherwise many are just thinking "survive."
Yeah - DD's aren't in a great place right now.. Radar too common, Too many planes with all the hybrids around, Subs that spot, which you can do NOTHING about.. Support soo far behind they may as well not be there at all, and some numpty at the back with 0 situational awareness screaming at you to cap.. Currently the best DD players often seem to be the ones who simply manage to survive to have some late-game impact. just yesterday, had someone complaining about me being 'useless'.. I was our only surviving DD, successfully defending our only cap (which was under threat by 3 ships, including radar+sub) - which I had initially captured, after spotting/destroying their Shima.. Weird thing was, it was another(sunk) DD player complaining.. Wasn't MY flank that collapsed... sigh.. Thankless job - completely thankless...
It's good you show the "detonation" games as well as the slow death. I have a Smoly & its really good against cl's & dd's but needs range mod for anything else & cover or you're gone.. not many cv's like you either.
you just proved us that no ship is OP without a proper team. in the end it's a team game and it needs the combined effort of all players using their ships strengths to help win the game
I´m happy to have it in my port with Musashi and Kronshtadtoh the Kutuzow not to forget Sap is a defently weakness, also Elbings like to chunk light cruisers, whish for a Super Elbing maybe 4 guns like Kitakaze or with alternate hull turning it inot a german Harugumo with 150mm guns.
I remember when this ship was new and everyone was running it. Always the first target for me as a BB if I could get a good shot. Lots of ovepens on these damn things.

I got Smolensk years ago. Back then, it was OP. It's still good, but situational & often low impact. Today's tier ten meta is very hard on concealment & it is made of paper. Which, as you point out, has been made worse by the addition of SAP.

There's a VERY good reason you never see Hizen. It's a complete turd of a ship. Easy top 10 worst ships in game, maybe even top 5.

I got Smolensk years ago. Back then, it was OP. It's still good, but situational & often low impact. Today's tier ten meta is very hard on concealment & it is made of paper. Which, as you point out, has been made worse by the addition of SAP.
Man, I remember back when the Smolenster was a coal ship, and it out ranging my FdG... I developed a special hate for this ship back then.
