When I patch my front porch steps this spring, I will use this method. Their concrete is 30 or 40 years old, and I put it off in the fall, because I knew it would stick out like a sore thumb and I wasn't wanting to paint the whole thing with Portland either. Thank you so much Mike for taking the time to make these videos. I know it's a lot of work, but guys like us really appreciate it. God bless you and yours.
I have being doing concrete for 20-30 years and I LOVE running across innovative ways to make a project work. You have just added another 'way' to my list. Thank you so much for sharing with the world your knowledge and skill set.
Hi Mike. Greetings from Ilfracombe, North Devon, UK. I have 40 concrete steps at the back of my property leading up to the back gate. They need some attention and you have inspired me to make a start. Thanks for the great videos ! Ken.
Thanks Mike. Im gonna try this out at my house. The mud trick is what i really needed to know! I got a big new cement patch that is brighter then the sunlight. Please keeping making these great videos.
Thank you - have learned so much. Sidewalk 'resurfaced' last year, still looks good. Mild winter here in N VA. Next is a set of steps wirh minor issues. If all goes well - pool deck. Thank you for helping old me build my confidence n saving a bit of money for now. Former Puttsburgh person those steps looked 'like home'.
Freaking amazing! Thanks Mike. I'm going to practice a bit before I tackle this step repair I have coming up. I know how to repair but I never liked the white look that resulted. Great information man, Thank you.
Mike, you are the best. No nonsense. Taught me a lot. But I have a suggestion for you - give your knees a break. Once I started using knee pad my 56 your old knees feel so much better. Just cheap $10 velcro knee pad. Give 'em a try.
@@MikeHaduck Hi Mike, Filled in the cracks and holes on my concrete stairs with rapid set mortar mix used the mud trick too! Looks good. Some higher and lower areas left. Now I want to go over the whole thing and make it look nice and uniform. Should I use Cement All for that or something else?

Old Painters trick when you spill paint on concrete, wash paint off with water or thinner then find some dirt and rub in to concrete, blend it all in. Or find some paint about same color as the concrete, but that's a bit trickier... Had to laugh when I saw you get the dirt from the back yard! I came here because my old slab from 1945 blew out on the edges from rotting sill plates, and water damage. I'll get my mason's hammer and pound it out, get some rebar, etc, but probably using concrete and a form on this deal. I just need to get it halfway level for a new PT sill plate (2x4) and some new j-bolts, etc, build it out a bit and call it Macaroni! And Bob's your Uncle... Leondardo DaVinci painted the Mona Lisa, Mike-E-Langelo painted the Cistene Chapel... I like your videos, I guess I'll keep looking for the right one for my project...
Mike, I love that you make each job you do feel like even I can fix cement issues on my home. You really take away the intimidation. Thank you so much! Of all the videos I watch for cement work, yours are the best.
Hi Mike, Another great video - love watching these as its nice to see a master at work. Who'd have thought 'Mud' would come in handy - thanks for passing on all your knowledge. Hopefully many more years of videos to come, keep up the good work. Have a great Christmas and prosperous New Year Mike - all the best and thanks again. Mark
1st time viewer mike going to be patching my steps that mud trick is awesome Great to see a real craftsman doing it right will b watching more of ur vids take care all the best to u and ur family
Excellent videos on the steps. I noticed on some you use Mortar Mix and other steps you used Cement All (white/blue bag). Is there a reason you choose one vs the other?
Hi Luis, they are basically the same product, the mortar mix has sand in it and forms better and in my opinion is a strong as concrete, so I use that in most situations but the other has no sand and is better is some situations, thanks Mike
Is morter the same as cement. I always thought morter was only to use between brick? But I see you use this morter for stair repair often. How long would a repair like this last. I have been fighting using different products, to repair my front steps. I will give this a try.
Hi Mike, I have a set of cement stairs where they have settled so they are low in two directions.... they are one big solid piece and cannot be jacked up... can rapid mix be used to level the treads and top landing.... or will it chip off...?
I am doing my concrete steps. Very old and big holes. Any tips? Do I use Concrete Mortar mix to fill in the holes? I got finishing mix. I thing I have to take that back.
What’s the life expectancy of these repairs , I’m only asking because I had a very experienced concrete contractor who I worked with on a lot of job sites and he owed me a favor so he did some patch work on my old house’s front porch ,my backyard’s concrete pad , and my basement floor which was a joke the floor was only 1/4 thick concrete. But he did a really good job , used a bunch of expensive bonding agents, quick drying waterproof cement in the basement, and on the front of my porch’s edge a crack developed and was only 1/2 thick for maybe 10 inches long but he cut out a big section like a 3” high x 3’ long area that was 4 inches deep . Then he drilled a bunch of tapcons into the area he just neatly cut with some wet saw so the cement would have something to grab onto then painted a thick layer of bonding agent onto the whole are , and filled it with some special cement designed not to crack. He told me I would get 8 to 10 years out of that patch but some others he informed me since he was only patching a damaged area and didn’t cut out a bigger area it may only last 1 to 2 years .
Hi Mr big, all I can say is a patch is a patch, and even new jobs sometimes don't last, I guess my answer is you got to take it as it comes, thanks Mike
Raff yes I believe that’s the intention. Fresh patches look bright, white, and stick out like a sore thumb! But a little mud stain will make the new patches blend in with the old weathered dirty concrete.
I use Rapid Set Mortar outside under crazy conditions with no cracking. Did my first inside the house work with it to close up cement board joints and got cracking. I did not use mesh and the humidity is about 40%. Should I just slap another coat on?
My experience with that product Mark is that the drier the conditions or surfaces, or the more porous the surfaces, the more this fast cure mix cracks for me. When I have a particularly stubborn crack, that is cosmetically an issue, a high quality construction adhesive pressed in the cracks helps secure another coat of the Mortar Mix. Loctite has a really interesting 8X fast grab. Mike has videos where he shows using these type of solutions on floors.
Great video, very helpful. Thanks Mike! In your other videos you use Cement All as well. What is the difference between Mortar Mix and Cement All? For what kind of job you would use Mortar Mix and for what you would use Cement All?
