The idea that Ahti is the physical representation of The Oldest House makes so much sense, especially since Finnish word for janitor is 'talonmies', which literally means 'man of the house'
As native Finnish speaker, I had to comment here. Janitor translates to 'siivooja' in Finnish (the person who swipes floors and takes out trash etc.). 'Talonmies' would translate to caretaker (someone who takes care of a building).
@@ilkka9385 that's debatable and depends on the responsibilities and size of the property. Scale. The main thing that moved me about this game is scale. The game just makes you feel small in a way most games don't. That really serves to solidify the atmosphere of facing something vast, eldritch and unknowable. I wish more games explored this with their level design.
Exactly! Going to the Astral Plane for the first time & seeing The Board’s Pyramid looming in the endless white landscape & finding Ahti’s Sauna area (DLC mission I think) are some of the moments I won’t forget just because they really show you how tiny you are in the game’s cosmos & simultaneously moved a bit by the fact that these immensities have still managed to take an interest in you & your ragtag coworkers
This is a great video. I feel like the best games are ones that you think about long after you've finished them, and Control was incredibly gripping in that regard. Your perspective on its storytelling was fascinating to listen to. Control scared me, but I had a hard time figuring out why that was. It was fun to think about, but some of the connections you made here were beyond me, so I loved hearing you out. I really hope your channel takes off!
Thank you so much!!! It means so much to me that you think that as I’ve always looked up to you and your content! It feels amazing to hear that from creators like yourself 😊
You talked about Polaris a bit here, but one really interesting thing about Polaris is that I think you, the player, are Polaris. You live in Jesse's head, which is why you can hear her thoughts, and you guide her movements, but you aren't Jesse. Not directly, anyway. It adds another layer to the game when you see Jesse talking, not to herself, but to you, the player, by proxy of Polaris.
After finishing the game i also thought about the genre itself. The game uses the word "paranatural" a lot. I researched it, got a look into paranormal stuff, twin peaks, x-files and etc. The cool in this, is that this game basically is the most unique i've played in a while, from it's themes, atmosphere, characters, writing... Just like Death Stranding, it makes me wonder if games are actually limited on creativity nowadays. Fumito Ueda-san works are also on that category. Maybe we're in a verge of a different era for video-games were more weirder and more experimental stuff are in the making...? I dunno, but it sure takes a lot of confidence to make something like that on a industry so stale maybe. (i'm brazilian, so if some words don't make sense being together, i'm sorry)
And I think we should also give credit to the weird world of SCPs for being the game's main inspiration. It's so heavily inspired by SCP that some might even call it a rip-off (but it's not hehe).
They intentionally use words with double meanings. They know how to communicate well, they are very methodical about about it. Feigning ignorance or withholding information/knowledge. I love the whole "power of the word" theme throughout the game.
I know you uploaded this a couple of years ago but I just want to say you put into words exactly why I love this game so much. I got this game early on in the pandemic, and since then it has burrowed itself into my brain and hasn't left. I still find myself thinking through the halls of the Oldest House, hearing the Hiss incantation echoing endlessly. Thank you for this video!
This was such a well done take on Control and really touched on the vibe of the game so precisely. You are without a doubt one of the most underrated gaming essay creators I’ve seen in a long time. Inspiring content!
I came over here after I saw that Razbuten mentioned you as a channel to watch. Very glad I came over - this video is great. I finished playing Control a few weeks ago
As it's something like the 18th time I watch this video I feel like the least I can do is say thank you. This is one of the most stimulating video I've watched on Control and more generally on the experience of the unknown. I even used it as teaching material with an undergrad class in social theory. So thank you and thanks for your other videos as well !
Your analysis on video games is something. I completed the game but never asked myself what is happing. reminds me how simple minded I was. Take my sub👍
Control is one of not my all time favorite games I'm in love with the game ever since I first played it and found poets of the fall on there a great band that I'm into that and control is so sick and I will never get tired of control
A great video to watch during spooky month. This definitely one I'll be coming back to whenever I feel haunted by the Weird or stuck with the Eerie. Beautiful work!
I finally got around to checking out some of the videos that you've created on games I've actually played. I'm really impressed and I hope you're as proud of making this as you should be. It's really well written, well thought out and the accompanying footage works well. Also, I appreciate you using pre-created philosophy and ideas of Fisher's book since a big shortfall of the normal video essay is that everything gets approached on a surface level, meaning they'd never even look into the first, easier layer to comprehend, leaving people with a set of generally surface level ponderings, rather than actually trying to share your journey of not just comprehending what you've seen but also why you even comprehend it that way. This is high effort and a step above the rest. Proud of ya! Good job :)
Thank you, TH-cam algorithm, for blessing my recommendations with this channel. The first vid I saw from you was The Evil Within and your words captivated me. Now this. Control! My favourite game 🙂 You are a gem. I hope your channel gets more viewership. 🙏
Perfect video to talk about what is Control...^^ A World that can have multiple realities and about that, there is one thing I would like to see in the "possible follow-up"... Our Reality is a part of this World O.O . No walls between us (players) and the world of Control... even if in a way, it's already the case ;-). The Board does a reference to us as players^^
The Lovecraftian aspect caught me off-guard on my first playthrough, packed with Sam Lake's love for David Lynch and its prevailing influence on all of his games, it makes for an odd combination that does, indeed, work and does so wonderfully in its eerie unease in Control. This video is very good at detailing and explaining Control's weird side and is one of the reasons why I loved the game so much. Remedy's passion is all over it and I am very excited for Alan Wake 2 and can't wait to see what they're going to do with it, and even though Control has its flaws and not all of their experimentation worked in it, it's still an admirable game and I'm glad that Remedy still has it in them to make a game like this and that they've shown how open to taking risks they were with it since it's so much more than another generic third-person shooting game and the combination of camp with Lovecraftian cosmic horror and surrealistic Twin Peaks vibes in a The X Files dressing was a perfect match, as puzzling as that may appear at first.
Great video, its a great explanation og the eerie and helpful for shaping an eerie space. I haven't played the game. But im also suprised that i haven't heard Control being compared to the SCP universe before. It shares a lot of simmilarities. Im positive the fridge is an SCP referance. Control may have a stronger red tread in its paranormal(?) or as they are called in the SCP universe anomalies. There are a lot of SCP's that probably are more facinating, though it is shaped by the tonnes of writers as it essentially is a public writing project/experiment. The interactive and visual elements of control probbably gives it more immersion etc. tho
This is some high-Quality analysis and i'm glad it exists.Your writing, delivery, and vido formatting are excellent and enjoyable and markedle improved. You deserve a great deal of channel growth. Keep up the good work; I'm eagerly awaiting your next piece of content.
I know this is an old video and you probably won't see this but... I wanted to first say that I recently started watching and your videos are amazing. Though I do have a question regarding Control's DLC THE Foundation I seems that the Board may not be the only thing/entity that can give Jesse powers. Whatdo you think about that?
Wow. I recently finished Control and now I understand why I still felt confused on the lack of understanding of basically everything. I pushed through the game hoping I would get answers but I was just left with more questions...

Being the Director is a great job, but the Board takes firing you a little too literally. Seriously though, I saw Control on your list I had to watch it immediately. One of my favorite games and great dissection. And no, I never thought the board fully understood people. They get them in a functional sense, in the same way we understand animals. Without knowing the significance of the few spoiling images and some locations you hardly spoiled anything, in focusing on the game's themes and World rather than its plot and characters.
