Chasing Deforestation is a series that explores the world’s most threatened forests through satellite data and reporters on the ground.
The third episode focuses on the Leuser Ecosystem on Indonesia’s main western island of Sumatra, a world biodiversity hotspot that has been fighting palm oil-driven illegal logging for decades.
Rudi Putra, an Indonesian biologist and conservationist, and Wagini, a villager in Indonesia’s Aceh province, share their experiences of how illegal deforestation has impacted their lives and what they are doing to help recover the areas destroyed.

Thanks for sharing this highly insightful report, it saddens me this channel has not been seen by more people. The forests and wildlife of Sumatra has been a big interest of mine lately and I’m glad there’s resources in this that can help me fight to save it even from across the ocean

Indonesia is for sale. Despite what they tell us the huge amount of forest destruction here is entrenched and globalized and resource extraction is encouraged. These big companies are here because they were invited to come here and the Indonesian govt profited handsomely off the exploitation.
Despite all the terrible news the situation is for the most part still NOT improving. Plenty of species are going extinct and the forests disappear although there are a number of reasons for it. Look at the size of Indonesia's population in 2023.
Decades ago the Suharto govt leased 90% of Indonesia's lowland forests to conglomerates. It appears this is still in effect. Corporations are in control of Indonesian forests. They are not including conservation in their plans, despite their efforts at greenwashing, and their predatory practices remain in place. Economics is partly dictating their policies.
All that has to change. Tropical rain forests should never be reduced to being corporate assets like this.
However much of the damage is already done. Most primary lowland forest in Sumatra and Borneo is already gone.
