Nah, who let bro cook😂 I get that this is subjective, but holy cow man. To start off nicely, DB’s art style is generally agreeable. It’s not exactly peak, but it’s cute and it evolves just enough to capture the tension of the piccolo fights. Saiyan Saga’s art is so easy on the eyes that it’s hard to really hate. Even the “rough around the edges” aspects tie nicely into the visual language of Vegeta (for instance) in relation to his more refined proportions by the end of Z. That twitter meme saying “Vegeta’s chin got the most development” is 100% accurate in the best way possible. He LOOKS like an arrogant prince with a lot to learn, something that modern Yamamuro’s art can’t quite capture. In short, its unrefined look is its greatest strength and should be an easy A tier. Namek looks good when Ebisawa isn’t animating😂, this arc can look fugly at times! Though Frieza’s softer eyebrows in his final form look great and I’m disappointed that it took Shintani to bring them back in the Broly movie. The Android/Cell Saga develops a LOT of differences from the Namek Saga as it gets closer to the Cell games. Around the time that Cell arrives and transforms is where Tadayoshi Yamamoro comes in and gives us his signature strong proportions with Kamiccalo, Super Vegeta, and SSJ2 Gohan to name a few. I do believe that researching exactly who drew these arcs does highlight quite a lot of differences and gives more depth to the opinions presented. Buu’s art is peak Z, agreeably, but it’s not without its jarringly ugly spots. There’s one instance that comes to mind where Goku and Majin Vegeta “agree” to refocus on Buu and it’s drawn twice by two different teams as a cliffhanger and a post credits opener. Seeing the B team’s version in comparison to the cliffhanger is wack AF, And once you notice it, you see that the B team have been around since the Android Saga at least and most of Z looks way worse in my mind for it😂. There is no universe in which GT’s art is worse than Super’s. I’m sorry but I’d prefer David Yate’s GT with its occasionally mucky color palette than having my retinas burned by Super’s art style. Even the TOP’s bright colors look BLOWN OUT, just look at SSBE Vegeta and MUI Goku’s auras when they transform. They look dangerously bright on the eyes! Shintani’s Broly art is peak DBS, but there are times where the composition between characters and the backgrounds don’t quite jive well together. These are few and far between, but one notable example is the POV sequence when Broly is zoning in on Goku, firing ki blasts at him, and punching him through mountains. The hands firing the ki blasts in that sequence look like Gumball putting his “how to basic-esque” sandwich together with the flat motion and lack of foreshortening. Still a great fight and art style, but a bit too experimental and hit or miss with some scenes. DBS Super Hero is certainly the best that CG Dragon ball has looked, but dear God do the scenes with Goku and Vegeta on Beerus’s planet look unfinished! Still strange how the prettiest scene in the film is the 2d drawn series recap at the beginning😂. We simply do not know enough about Daima to give it a verdict, but this is probably the most faithful art style in adapting modern Toriyama’s illustrations. The bubbly proportions are explicitly meant to transcribe his modern chibi look and it looks great so far! Overall, I guess my main issue with this tier list is that, without extensive research on who drew the series at what point and what went wrong or right, a lot of the rankings seem more aggravating. No crucifixion was intended with this comment, and I do understand not turning this video into a thirty minute rehash of what Totally Not Mark, Anime Ajay, etc. have educated us on.
I was about to say almost exactly this. This tier list is all kinds of wrong. The shift from Namek to Cell was one of the first art style changes I ever actively noticed as a kid, same thing with the output of Studio Last House later on. And don’t even get me started on Yukio Ebisawa. I have a lot of respect for his animation style, and I don’t hate his art either. That said, when it’s ugly, it’s really really ugly The point is there’s too many things to factor in terms of Dragon Ball’s art. The sheer amount of people who have their own take on Toriyama’s style is too many to count, so it’s difficult to make a definitive tier list of any kind.
For me personally, the Buu saga artstyle and the Broly style are the best, followed by the Yuya Takahashi Tournament of Power artstyle. The 2D Superhero artstyle was also really great, I didn't care much for the 3D art but it wasn't overly terrible. I enjoy the Frieza saga artstyle as well.
2D art was done entirely by Chikashi Kubota as he said he didn't want the entire movie to be CG. He decided to perfectly emulate the style that each era the anime has, and did it better than anyone else before hand
The Buu saga art is great, it's true. The only problem I see there is that they sometimes abused on the muscles. But the real problem is not dedicated to the art style but to the Toei. I know Goku was not an idiot-looking back then, but they made him too serious. It added to his portrayal as a hero whereas he's not a hero.
Also I love Goku's smaller pupils in the OG Dragon Ball and Early DBZ, it looked more fierce and serious. Now Android/Cell saga onwards, his pupils look big making him look like a kid.
@@Heat7208I agree. His staredown against Nappa and Vegeta in the saiyan saga is in my opinion, one of the best looking shot in the series. It's so stylistic and just so good. I was surprised and happy when i saw the daima trailer as it had good looking art style so that kinda confirmed for me that whenever the moro and granolah arcs are finally animated they may have a similar or even better art style
“lacking in flair” is a crazy way to describe GT. you can take a screenshot of a random gt frame, and everyone will instantly know it’s gt. if that isn’t flair idk what is
@kidthekiddo8996 Well, I would assume most dragon ball fans would recognize GTs style. But what i meant by that was compared to the other series, the show doesn't pop like the others
@@KeyReviewsOfficial pop ≠ good. dbs “pops” but it looks cheep and cartoony, they later fixed it in TOP. og db is way less saturated, but the warmer tone fits the narrative. i think you just personally don’t like gt which is fine, but you shouldn’t use objective criticisms to back up your personal opinions
@@Leoa268he wasnt. Rating Gt lower than super. You people must be smoking something. GT had better character designs and was far more consistent in execution than super. The muted color palette was probably the only critique that can be levied against GT.
I'm sorry but even in the clips you showed, you can see the inconsistencies in DBS's animation both in the early stages and during the ToP arc. They only used really good animation in VERY short bursts during the climax/end of important fights and the action still seemed far from what we got in Z and GT most of the time. I still cant believe you put BOTH iterations of DBS over GT lmao I wish we could do a global poll of animation styles I'm curious if this is a widely held opinion.
@Scoundr3ll I made this video a bit ago, and my opinion has changed. I would definitely put GT over super from the start up until the tournament of power, but I perfer the tournament of power style more than GT. Growing up watching GT, I never really liked the style tbh
Cell saga artstyle shouldve been separated from the Frieza saga style tbh, especially the artstyle during the Cell games. Its honestly my favorite in Z
Not gonna lie I kinda vibe with this list. I think simplicity and colors work with the dynamic fighting better than a shiny stiff one. It just let the animators make the fights smoother. For GT......its like they turned up the shiny highlights and turned down the contrast. GT's designs are sick (other than the Frieza and Cell ones) and just needed vibrant colors. Go back and look at Goku's gi on Namek in 1080p it's magnificent 👌
Db super broly animation is so good like more simpler and smoothness with good colour selection. I hope they will use this animation style in db super season 2.
The Shintani x Takahashi combination IMO it's the best combination for the art style of Dragon Ball, when it is a calm scene, it should be mostly Shintani's work, but a little bit of Takahashi, and then in fight scenes Takahashi could take over the art style and animation.
I love everything from classic DB to Z, but my favorite style is the Freeza/Cell one. Even if Boo was the most refined, I think the less refined but still sleek look of Freeza/Cell is my favorite style, even if Boo is a close second. Oh, and the Tournament of Power and Broly styles are great.
Really good video dude you not misinformation the artstyles like some normie fans do in some stupid social media posts my favorite is chikashi kubota in the tournament of power.👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍.
The anatomy in Buu saga single handedly ruined alot of artists' understanding of musculature. Saiyan and Namek saga are top tier for me. Cell saga comes second. Everything else can settle in B tier except for Super. Super is ass.
Dragonball Super characters look rather look like they were made by Ichiro Ooda (creator of One Piece). Goku sometimes looks low key like luffy in Super
While I do agree with the rest of the video, I gotta join the group saying “Early Super isn’t above GT.” Personal thing, I liked the GT artstyle. Though it does feel washed out and weird looking (especially the Shenron scene you showed), the backdrops for the Baby fight, the Dragon Fist against Eis, and Super 17’s fight look super nice. BoG’s Super arc just looks…so bad. The shading there is even more flat than GT’s, imo. Coming in as a recent DB fan, take that as you will.
6:51 That's the point. It's melancholy and sad for an end of the era story. Even the music reflect this. The artstyle was consistent with Toriyama's artstyle at that time: rounder face, wider jaw line and large neck. The artstyle is actually suppose to resemble more closely to Toriyama's artstyle at that time, and he did exhibit those mentioned trait, color pallete and white highlight.
You really criticized gt Goku not having that chubby young look and that would be a fair criticism if Goku was an actual kid instead of an adult who was at his peak physical form with fully developed muscles I think giving GT Goku the chubby look like OG Dragonball wouldn’t make sense to me since he is at a completely different physical status then when he was a child
My personal favorites are the 23rd tenkaichi and Shintani's art style. Both of these I absolutely love. Just to be clear Dragon Ball has always been hand drawn outside of Super Hero. Daima is also supposed to be more like current Akira Toriyama's art style as his style hasn't been consistent. You can often see how his style has changed with the Dragon Quest Series as he's the main artist for that series as well. I also saw a ton of Naotoshi Shida showcases which is nice because he's been on the series since early Dragon Ball, with his most famous scene from early dragon ball being one of the fights between Goku and Krillin in the 21st tenkaichi. Also the hand drawn sequences in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero were all done exclusively by Chikashi Kubota. He did the opening and all of those 2D flash backs himself. Much of the 2D effects were handled by various artists at toei.
Am I the only one who notices the qualitative difference in the drawings at minute 5:10 or 5:28 with that of minutes 5:07 or 5:36? Pause if necessary. The definition of the muscles or the face changed from episode to episode. I remember that usually, in all of Dragon Ball Z, there was one episode that was very well drawn, one that was mediocre, and one that was drawn and animated very badly. Can anyone tell me why?
The artstyles change constantly depending on the lead animator of a particular scene. Even within episodes, you can see the subtle changes in style as the artist changes. Super's earlier arc's having whack artstyles had more to do with the rushed production pace of the show than an intentional stylistic choice.
i think what really makes DBS broly's art style stick out the most is the simple shading/lighting and that hand drawn feel. it gives the characters the life they needed behind those dead, over-saturated eyes 😭 the problem with super was that 2015 kids youtube channel color palette, and the over used 3 tone shading. it just made a lot of characters look so oily in a lot of scenes idk. I really hope we get to see the broly art style again
Putting Saiyan saga in c tier is crazy and shows you haven't fully watched Z. Its got one of the best shots and most esthetically pleasing art in the series, like Goku vs Raditz, and Goku's staredown against Nappa and Vegeta
If i were to redo this video, the rankings would be a lot different but I watched dbz kai several times, and I was mostly making this video based off memory and going back to watch some scenes. Again, this ranking would look different if I were to redo it but I've mostly always thought the saiyan saga looked a lot more rough compared to the other sagas in Z but that's just me 🤷♂️
It's a shame the worst arc had the best animation. I think by the Cell Games though it looks basically the same. Around the time Piccolo is fighting 17 there's a noticeable difference.
Cell Saga / Buu Saga ORIGINAL animation on average had pretty good quality animation. Super Sayins looked knida angelic in away how they did their eyes and almost white/beige/light gold color. Like SERIOUSLY! compare the overall SS 1 transformation from Super to Cell or Buu Saga SS, man. . . its sad to see Super suffered from animators being given such little time to work on the show
This is just my thoughts on the different styles from looking at the series. LMK what your favorite style was!

Fight me all you want, Shintani is my favourite art style
The reason I like Shintani the best is because it looks alot like Early Z (my second favourite) but more polished and has more fluid movement
In one saga can be different styles, no just one per saga
fr like how buu saga had the most majestic shots followed by some random yee yee ass namek saga ass artstyle. probs would be more accurate if based on movies, imo Fusion Reborn had the best artstyle
Guys can anyone tell me what is this version of release used for dragon ball z it looks so sharp and good.... Is it blueray version available still?
I suppose it's dbz kai?
@@Ashley_Prides kai are u sure?
Does kai have 16:9 ratio?
Putting GT in F but Super higher is just wrong.
"art is subjective"
Never make a tier list again
He was correct with GT in my opinion
@@Leoa268he wasnt. Rating Gt lower than super. You people must be smoking something. GT had better character designs and was far more consistent in execution than super. The muted color palette was probably the only critique that can be levied against GT.
@@meina0614Factss
No, I’m only saying that cuz of the writing. And no, I don’t smoke
@@meina0614 GT did understand dragon ball but super didn’t so you might have a point
Growing up watching GT, I never really liked the style tbh
the 90's and dbs broly art are my two favorite art styles
DBS Broly is number 1, theirs no arguing
In animation, not art
@@Drumicallcompletely disagree.
Not art? You are joking right?@Drumicall
@@Drumicall It's number 1 in both animation and art
You can't rank DBS broly over the OG DBZ the design is just better 👌
I love the cartoony look of the very early DB episodes. Goku is just adorable in that era
5:38 Yamamoto....?
Buu, cell, and broly animation is peak
Putting SUPER above GT? I hate GT as much as the next guy, but… No. Just no.
You know you’re doing great when I’m getting dragon ball ads before seeing these videos. 😂
seeing super in A and gt in F is hilarious
Not really.
@@Sydney-wi1ymit is
@@Say_King77 it isn't.
The Shintani x Takahashi combination IMO it's the best combination for the art style of Dragon Ball, when it is a calm scene, it should be mostly Shintani's work, but a little bit of Takahashi, and then in fight scenes Takahashi could take over the art style and animation.
7:02 Lol Goku’s head looks MASSIVE here
i disagree with almost every single thing you said, but all in all this is your opinion on the matter and still valid points, great video man
Lmao, this is an older video, and a lot of my opinions have changed
I love everything from classic DB to Z, but my favorite style is the Freeza/Cell one. Even if Boo was the most refined, I think the less refined but still sleek look of Freeza/Cell is my favorite style, even if Boo is a close second. Oh, and the Tournament of Power and Broly styles are great.
I thought you were going to talk about the artists styles
8:15 "black goku arc''

Huh?
@@KeyReviewsOfficialmaybe it was just me, but i heard black goku instead of goku black and it sounded really funny to me
@@Sybry605 Ohh yea I did say black Goku lol
Really good video dude you not misinformation the artstyles like some normie fans do in some stupid social media posts my favorite is chikashi kubota in the tournament of power.👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍.
The anatomy in Buu saga single handedly ruined alot of artists' understanding of musculature. Saiyan and Namek saga are top tier for me. Cell saga comes second. Everything else can settle in B tier except for Super. Super is ass.
Dragon ball "guys we need a way to keep the characters from ageing/die" *turns them in to kids*
💀💀
How did we skip cell.l saga? There's a big difference from Friezq to cell especially near it's ending
TH-cam, I wouldn’t allow 0:31
Is it weird i truly don't have a favorite art style? i like them all tbh
Dragonball Super characters look rather look like they were made by Ichiro Ooda (creator of One Piece). Goku sometimes looks low key like luffy in Super
Gt’s “lighting issue” comes from the fact that by the time they released it the film had already started to age.
No fucking way Masaki Sato DBZ is C FUCKING TIER
God I want Buu saga art style back
9:49 i absolutely love the colors and the big fluffier hair in the broly movie art style lol
Nah, you were smoking crack for putting GT in F
Rip akira toriyama
You really criticized gt Goku not having that chubby young look and that would be a fair criticism if Goku was an actual kid instead of an adult who was at his peak physical form with fully developed muscles I think giving GT Goku the chubby look like OG Dragonball wouldn’t make sense to me since he is at a completely different physical status then when he was a child
I didnt criticism gt for not having chubby goku. I pointed the differences between GT and the original series
Never cook again lil bro
Best art style: Goku VS Vegeta( Buu Saga) Goku VS Kid Buu

Daima’s look is actually amazing and makes me excited to get back into Dragonball since Super is a bit messy and off the rails for my taste.
Wow. I agree with everything here. That's really rare. Nice video.
Is that the girl from scientific railgun on your pfp?
This doesn’t count as a full style like the ones in this video, but Masaki Sato is easily the best
Underrated channel
Am I the only one who notices the qualitative difference in the drawings at minute 5:10 or 5:28 with that of minutes 5:07 or 5:36? Pause if necessary. The definition of the muscles or the face changed from episode to episode. I remember that usually, in all of Dragon Ball Z, there was one episode that was very well drawn, one that was mediocre, and one that was drawn and animated very badly. Can anyone tell me why?
Some opinions are so bad they need to not be shared online.
Thanks for the huge cap but stay away from the kitchen next time 😂💀
What didn't you agree with
The artstyles change constantly depending on the lead animator of a particular scene. Even within episodes, you can see the subtle changes in style as the artist changes.
Super's earlier arc's having whack artstyles had more to do with the rushed production pace of the show than an intentional stylistic choice.
Buu Arc Animation is the peak animation Dragon Ball for me 🔥🔥
No way saiyan sagas that low, especially in comparison to some episodes from the android arc
Super is fugly and all the characters look like someone drew them from memory
i think what really makes DBS broly's art style stick out the most is the simple shading/lighting and that hand drawn feel. it gives the characters the life they needed behind those dead, over-saturated eyes 😭
the problem with super was that 2015 kids youtube channel color palette, and the over used 3 tone shading. it just made a lot of characters look so oily in a lot of scenes idk.
The red ribbon army doesn’t want to be left out of the series lol 💀
did you know that goku's gi:
in db is red
in dbz is orange
in dbs orange clearly
in dbs movies is between orange/yellow
in dbd is yellow
You missed GT which goku's gi is light blue
also the teal-like color in the end of Z
Oh how this aged its orange in daima

putting DBSSH in B is absolutely Psychotic to me. But i understand your reasons.
The highlights in the skin started in the Androids saga. You can see it on Future Trunks when he debuts.
Cell Saga / Buu Saga ORIGINAL animation on average had pretty good quality animation.
Super Sayins looked knida angelic in away how they did their eyes and almost white/beige/light gold color. Like SERIOUSLY!
compare the overall SS 1 transformation from Super to Cell or Buu Saga SS, man. . . its sad to see Super suffered from animators being given such little time to work on the show
I didnt even know daima was out wtf is wrong with me💀
