  • Day 3 of the New Zealand Four Wheel Drive Association pre-AGM 4WD tour of the braided rivers west of Methven. Today we are heading up the next river to the north - the Rakaia River and boulder bashing our way towards Reischek Hut.

Another great video. Haven’t had the pleasure of doing that track, but seen another video of another party doing it. They had the same experience as you did with the rocks.

Mate - it was brutal. 😬 It was the size of the boulders that was an issue. As stated at the driver briefing - they had had significant rain which washed the 'fines' away from the heavier boulders - which is what we experienced up the Macaulay above Lake Tekapo on our way to the LR75th. Suspect it would have been an easier ride if there had been some reconnaissance done. We headed up the Harper River the next day - so in preparation I hit Google Maps and placed pins on all the visible track entry and exit point to the river to try and prevent a repeat of the Rakaia. 🤞

My brother and I nearly died as a 3 and 5 year olds in '77 or 78 on a 20 vehicle mid canterbury four wheel drive club trip that foolishly decided to re-cross this river to get home after a night of heavy rain camping on the west side. (Our vehicle was being washed backwards into a major confluence when someone managed to leap in with a rope to tether us). Was near bank to bank by time we got to final crossing, and final fording saw a toyota landcruiser miraculously get across a 20m wide river with water going over the roof which let us then pull rest of vehicles through one by one.

Good grief! One tip I got was to have a 'river-rope' - which is a very long appropriately rated poly-prop rope that is long enough to span the crossing. This is attached to the back of the lead vehicle - and to two recovery vehicles facing the opposite way ready to drag the vehicle back out if it all turns bad. You can see a couple of 'hose-reels' on the back of some of the 'locals' vehicles - but I did not see any deployed. I think the Suzuki was lucky to not float away. Are you still 4WDing? Thanks for the comment.

Great watch ! Jeepers, some of those river crossings you'll almost need scuba gear

ALMOST? The issue is the speed at which some of the chaps hit the water. If you watch some of the "All For Adventure" videos - they wind the vehicle up to hit the water at speed - which looks great on video - but can fold the fan forward thru the radiator - smash the radiator in - punch out head lights - power blast the cabin air intakes and wonder why the raised air intake is full of water..... Slow and steady is the way to do water crossings - and travel with the current.

I hear you , I was one of them during military training, hit the water with reasonable speed nearly went through the windscreen. Can’t learn faster than that 😂

Kev, I have a question. Being a club why don’t they recommend to your members to cross rivers with windows down especially electric ones?. I’ve got 20 years experience in rivers around Canterbury and got complacent on a trip which ended up with the truck rolling down the river. The only reason Im still here today was my windows were down in the truck . Great video, keep up the good work.

Yes - quite right! Also remember to remove your seat belt, travel with the current behind you and hang a tow rope off the back of your vehicle.... but I saw most locals didn't!
As mentioned in the video - I did ask, as it was an ideal opportunity to do a '101' of river crossings for us Northerners. The group I was with were listed as 'Experienced' - so again, the assumption is that we know what we are doing - but it would be a hard lesson to learn if we got it wrong. I was not comfortable about just plowing in, as the rivers are opaque due to the Glacial mineral content of the water - hence why they sent a 'Crash-Test' modified vehicles in first to blaze a trail - but even a metre either side can find yourself in a deep hole. Thanks very much for the comment.

The vehicles need to be properly set up to attend a trip with a title of "Boulder Bash". Brett's black Land-Rover Discovery 4 had significant bash plates added - which paid for themselves - but they too were damaged. My Discovery has a 6mm bash plate welded across the front of the Diff - solid steel steering rods (not hollow tubing) a 25mm lift and raised air intakes for the engine, Gearbox, Diffs and Transfer box - so with no spoiler alert - wait till you see the damage the Discover still endured. I will be adding a 'Damage Report' to the last video of the trip. Thanks for the comment.

1 minute in, already cant keep to the road. Sadly when all our tracks get shut down, you will wake up thats its people like you who cant stay on them who are ruining it for everyone.

Are you referring to when I shifted off Double Runs Road onto the truck by-pass to avoid the Ute coming the other way towing a trailer by Kowhai Camp?
