I've lived here for 10 years. Fell in love with the place. You actually got a bit of my apartment on camera in your walk downtown here. :) The town is a nice quiet place, and I recognized a friend of mine in that video of yours! The parking deck has been removed though since this video though, and they're finishing work on it now. There are a lot of neat ruins nearby to explore as well as some awesome waterfalls.
Me and my girlfriend will be moving to houghton this spring and this video was not only interesting and informative but it took a load off my shoulders to see the beautiful sights and scenes makes me feel better about moving thanks a ton!!!
Let me know how your first winter goes! I'm in the EUP and have always wondered if everybody has some kind of special trick for going uphill in winter.
This is so beautiful. I live in Houghton, in a handicapped apt, so I've not been lucky enough to see the waterfront and how it's changed. This is beautiful....as a younger kid, none of this was done...it was "wild"...this is so cool. Thank you!
Great video, brought back memories. i delivered news print there in the 80's & 90's. loved going there in the summer. Get there earlier and go for walk along the river and downtown. People were very friendly as well . would love to do that drive 1 more time.
Michigan *Technological* University 😄 2:49 The Library isn't the original - the original bar/pub at that location burned down in Fall, 1995. Came close to burning down the whole block. The fire caused the second floor of the original structure to collapse down onto the first floor. The original Library was two floors, but was rebuilt as one floor - rumor was that there wasn't an elevator previously, so that wasn't covered by insurance. So they rebuilt on one floor with a microbrewery. 9:46 the way the bridge is configured here is so cars cross on the former railroad deck, to allow pleasure craft to go under without having to stop traffic. The bridge still has to go up for sailboats. By the time I left ~ 1999, you had only a handful of freighters go through a year.
I heard MTU is bringing too many students in, which is making the city overcrowded and unbearable. This small city can't hold all the students MTU wants to bring in, and the college can't expand like it wants to because there's no room, especially since the college is against the canal. If you do want to visit make sure you do it in the summer when the college students are gone.
I have lived in Houghton for 25 years. This is one of the worse places to live. It seems safe, but isn't as safe as yhey make it out to be. Meth is running rampant here. Vehicles are constantly broken into. Snowmobiles are constantly stolen. They lie about crime stats online. There has been over 50 murders here and in the surrounding area in the last couple decades. The police stations close at 5pm. They harass the locals. Never do any improvements until the tourists are about to get here. The local government employees are corrupt. We have the highest utilities in the country. The people here are not very nice. If you go to tech, the police will over look any crime you do in fear people will stop coming here. We never have nice weather. In fact the local weather reports will always be wrong if something is coming up. It almost always is bad weather during events, but they will say the weather will be fine. It never is. We hardly get Temps above 75°, mostly cold and wet out. Might be OK for a short visit, but terrible to live here. There are no resources.

@ lol the trick is to keep your feet as flat to the ground as you can from my experience
Great place! MTU is amazing! As is winter festival.
Couldn't agree more!

Houghton is a very lovely place 💜 to visit
I agree. It is a beautiful city!
Hancock is the suburb of Houghton?
Gosh that's up there
Nice city 😊
It really is!
Beautiful. We're all thankful it's not San Francisco.
Looks like you are trying to stop people from moving there..😅
It's a beautiful area and safe...much better than big city life.
